2002 Toyota 4runner problems
The Toyota 4Runner is an SUV manufactured by the Japanese automaker Toyota and marketed globally since 1984, across five generations. In Japan, it was marketed as the Toyota Hilux Surf (Japanese: トヨタ・ハイラックスサーフ, Hepburn: Toyota Hairakkususāfu) and was withdrawn from the market in 2009. The original 4Runner was a compact SUV and little more than a Toyota Hilux pickup truck with a fiberglass shell over the bed, but the model has since undergone significant independent development into a cross between a compact and a mid-size SUV. All 4Runners have been built in Japan at Toyota's plant in Tahara, Aichi, or at the Hino Motors (a Toyota subsidiary) plant in Hamura.
The name "4Runner" was created by copywriter Robert Nathan with the Saatchi & Saatchi advertising company as a play on the term "forerunner". The agency held contests to invent new names for Toyota's forthcoming vehicles. According to Toyota, the "4" described the vehicle's 4-wheel drive system while "Runner" was a reference to its all-terrain capabilities and how it could "run" off-road.
For some markets, the Hilux Surf was replaced in 2005 by the similar Fortuner, which is based on the Hilux platform.
As of 2021, the 4Runner is marketed in the Bahamas, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, the United States and Venezuela. Many markets that did not receive the 4Runner, such as Europe and the Middle East, instead received the similarly designed Land Cruiser Prado, another SUV that shared many of the same components.
The 4Runner came in at number five in a 2019 study by iSeeCars.com ranking the longest-lasting vehicles in the US. The 4Runner had 3.9 percent of vehicles over 200,000 miles (320,000 km), according to the study.

Common 2002 Toyota 4runner problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Toyota 4Runner 2002, several common problems have been identified:
- Rust Issues:
- Rust is a prevalent problem in Toyota 4Runners, especially on the body and undercarriage. Minor rust on the body can be relatively easy to fix, but significant rust on the frame or chassis can be a major issue. It is recommended to avoid vehicles with extensive rust as it can be costly and challenging to repair.
- Dashboard Cracking:
- The 2002 Toyota 4Runner is known to have issues with dashboard cracking. This problem, although not affecting the vehicle's performance, can be unsightly and may hinder airbag deployment in case of an accident. The dashboard cracking in the 2002 model is a common complaint among owners.
- Transmission Problems:
- Third-generation Toyota 4Runners, including the 2002 model, are prone to transmission issues. Owners have reported rough shifting and loss of power, which can be attributed to faulty components like the shift solenoid or throttle position sensor. Addressing these transmission problems may require component replacements.
- Ball Joint Issues:
- Some third-generation 4Runners, including the 2002 model, have experienced significant ball joint issues in the past. This problem could lead to severe front suspension system problems, potentially causing the front wheel to detach from the vehicle. While recalls have been made to address this issue, it's essential to check the specific vehicle's records and listen for unusual sounds during a test drive.
- General Wear and Tear:
- As the 2002 Toyota 4Runner is close to 20 years old, general wear and tear can be a concern. Components like the timing belt, water pump, lower ball joints, and steering rack boot may require attention due to age-related deterioration. Regular maintenance and inspections are crucial to address these issues and ensure the vehicle's longevity.
These common problems highlight the importance of thorough inspections and maintenance when considering a used Toyota 4Runner 2002. Addressing these issues promptly can help maintain the vehicle's performance and reliability over time.

- Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Had vehicle inspected on Oct. 1 ,2021 for road trip to North Carolina from Washington, DC. Was informed that my vehicle is unsafe by the automotive shop (name withheld) due to [rusting] frame front suspension components' threads rusted off on bolts that hold suspension, control arms, and shocks on both front and rear areas + body of vehicle located where shocks bolt to the body. I also had two other shops (names withheld) assess the state of the frame and suspension + and was told that the vehicle has maybe 1 year or so until the frame falls apart. Given I am the original owner, have gargage-kept my vehicle, have very low-mileage - 74,000 miles, and have maintained the vehicle immaculately and am aware of rusting problems with other Toyota [truck] frames, etc. this seems to be a defect in the manufacturing process. I know there have been recalls on Toyota's other trucks due to Toyota's failure to add [enough?] rust inhibitor/preventative to the molten steel when forming the frame for many models of their trucks.

I traded in my Acura MDX for this SUV. That should say enough right there. I'm excited to see the new model with a V8!
-
It sounds like you've found a great car that can handle both off-road adventures and city driving!
-
The 2002 4Runner Sport is a great vehicle, although it can be uncomfortable on poor road surfaces which are common in the US. The gas mileage is rather thirsty, but the engine is great. The seat height adjustment is poor and the stereo is cheap, with speakers occasionally shorting. There have been some noises from the front left suspension bushes over bumps since new, and minor brake problems that were not able to be rectified by the dealer in New Orleans, even after 2 attempts (Lakeside Toyota). Despite these issues, I would still recommend this vehicle. However, due to the ugliness of the new 4Runner model, I will be purchasing another Japanese brand next time.

I really love it!
-
Bought new from my local dealer in March 2002. The vehicle is the SE model and has been a real value. This was the last year Toyota built the 4Runner for American sales solely in Japan. That is a real plus! Great in the snow and fun to drive on vacation. Overall, it has been a great value and I would definitely buy it again.

This car is well-built and solid, with no rattles or squeaks even at 165,000 miles. However, I have had some mechanical issues with it. As someone who drives an average of 47,000 highway miles per year and keeps their vehicles for a long time, I have owned several cars in the past, including a 1989 Taurus, 1992 and 1995 T-birds, a 1996 Jeep Cherokee, and a 1999 Grand Cherokee. I never had to replace a transmission in any of those cars, but the Toyota's transmission only lasted 80,000 miles. I also had to replace the radiator fan and water pump at 100,000 miles, and the 4-wheel drive actuator(s) at 165,000 miles, which cost me another $1,900. While the average trip to the dealer costs $1,000, I will be trading this car soon. Just a heads up for potential buyers!
