2019 Toyota 4runner problems
The Toyota 4Runner is an SUV manufactured by the Japanese automaker Toyota and marketed globally since 1984, across five generations. In Japan, it was marketed as the Toyota Hilux Surf (Japanese: トヨタ・ハイラックスサーフ, Hepburn: Toyota Hairakkususāfu) and was withdrawn from the market in 2009. The original 4Runner was a compact SUV and little more than a Toyota Hilux pickup truck with a fiberglass shell over the bed, but the model has since undergone significant independent development into a cross between a compact and a mid-size SUV. All 4Runners have been built in Japan at Toyota's plant in Tahara, Aichi, or at the Hino Motors (a Toyota subsidiary) plant in Hamura.
The name "4Runner" was created by copywriter Robert Nathan with the Saatchi & Saatchi advertising company as a play on the term "forerunner". The agency held contests to invent new names for Toyota's forthcoming vehicles. According to Toyota, the "4" described the vehicle's 4-wheel drive system while "Runner" was a reference to its all-terrain capabilities and how it could "run" off-road.
For some markets, the Hilux Surf was replaced in 2005 by the similar Fortuner, which is based on the Hilux platform.
As of 2021, the 4Runner is marketed in the Bahamas, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, the United States and Venezuela. Many markets that did not receive the 4Runner, such as Europe and the Middle East, instead received the similarly designed Land Cruiser Prado, another SUV that shared many of the same components.
The 4Runner came in at number five in a 2019 study by iSeeCars.com ranking the longest-lasting vehicles in the US. The 4Runner had 3.9 percent of vehicles over 200,000 miles (320,000 km), according to the study.

Common 2019 Toyota 4runner problems
The 2019 Toyota 4Runner has been praised for its generous ground clearance, off-road capabilities, and high towing capacity. However, there are some common problems reported by owners that can be categorized into three main areas: peeling paint, excessive noise from the rear shocks, and damaged wiring.
- Peeling Paint: The most widespread complaint about the 2019 Toyota 4Runner is peeling paint, which has been reported at around 20,000 miles.
- Excessive Noise from Rear Shocks: Some 4Runner owners have reported excessive noise from the rear shocks at around 45,000 miles.
- Damaged Wiring: Some 4Runner owners have experienced damaged wiring, especially those who park their vehicles outside where the engine is susceptible to rodents.
In addition to these common problems, there are four recalls on the 2019 Toyota 4Runner, including a fuel pump recall where Toyota will replace the fuel pump assembly in affected models for free.
When it comes to the lifespan of the 2019 Toyota 4Runner, a well-maintained model can last around 350,000 miles, which is longer than nearly any other SUV on the market, including the popular Subaru Outback.

After inspecting under the hood of the car wires were seen chewed partially and a few completely severed. A rat was seen under the manifold cover. I used an air hose to evict it and had the car towed to dealership. The bill was just under $1000 to repair. I was warned it could have been worse ($6000) if harness needed changing. I was told “I was lucky”. After researching I discovered this is a problem because of soy based wiring. It’s an attractant for rodents.
TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-11-19
- VIN: JTEBU5JR6K5
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: I was driving.a 2019 SUV with about 16,100 miles on it at about 60 MPH in highway traffic on a perfectly smooth road and without any warning and out of nowhere there was a very loud bang in the back driver side of the SUV. The road was smooth, there were no potholes, and I didn’t hit anything. I had to pull over to get off the road and out of traffic. I was only able to pull about eight feet off the road onto the dirt to get out of moving traffic and when I got out to see what had happened. I was shocked to see that my drivers’s rear tire was completely flat and smoking. I was also shocked to see that the outer sidewall of the tire had 14 large bulges / bumps circling the entire 360 degrees of the tire’s outer sidewall surface. Being in a very dangerous situation on the highway in heavy fast moving traffic I had a call to 911 emergency come to assist me and they changed the defective tire. After the tire had been removed it turned out that the only visible condition seen was on the tires outer sidewall. The inner sidewall looks perfectly fine, all the condition seems only concentrated on the outer tire sidewall’s area.

I love my car! As a small woman with a job that requires me to be available in any weather, I need a vehicle that I can rely on. My car gives me the confidence to tackle blizzards and unplowed roads. That's why I'm on my fourth one and wouldn't consider anything else.
-
This SUV is fantastic, especially in the snow. However, it could use some improvement when it comes to going up hills.
-
Awesome vehicle! It's great to hear that you've owned Forerunners for 10 years and have found them to have good resale value.
-
The 5th generation offers an improved ride and spacious interior. While it's not possible to lower the rear window with the key remote like in the 4th generation, all windows are auto/1 touch for user convenience. The glovebox has less storage, but the 2nd row seating reclines for added comfort. It's worth considering upgrades for cargo accessories and security, including upgrades with the key fob. Additionally, I would recommend researching phone mounts, as vent clip/CD player phone mounts can block the radio screen.
-
The last true SUV built on a truck frame. It's super comfortable on the road and has the authority to go into the badlands! In my opinion, this is the best all-around SUV on the market. Even straight off the lot, this is a fun truck.

I really enjoyed my 4runner TRD PRO, but unfortunately, I experienced issues with the rear Fox shock or front strut failing every year. It was a frustrating experience as the dealership was initially reluctant to acknowledge the problem, and I had to escalate the issue to Toyota corporate. Even though the updated part was installed, the front fox struts began to knock and fail internally again at 30k miles. Toyota didn't provide any assistance as it was outside of the warranty period. Eventually, I decided to trade it in for a 2023 4runner with Toyota-made suspension and shocks. If you don't plan to lift it right away with a better suspension set up, I would recommend avoiding the TRD PRO of any year up to 23 equipped with Fox's sub-standard quality. It's a shame that a Japanese Toyota has Chinese-made suspension. I'm not sure what Toyota was thinking.
Kane Okuneva 2024-09-14
The limited 4runner's suspension upgrade did not meet my expectations as it is underpowered and only gets 17 mpg on a good day.
Jamaal Grimes 2024-09-11
Hey there! I wanted to share my experience with non-metallic paint colors from Toyota. Unfortunately, I've noticed that they use a single stage paint with clear coat mixed in, which means that the clear coat is quite thin. As a result, every nick and scratch goes right down to the metal. I've even noticed some rust spots under the clear coat where there are no scratches on my 2019 car. It's definitely been disappointing, but I hope this information helps you make an informed decision!

I've been a proud owner of a 4Runner for 15 years and was considering buying another one. However, I found it challenging to make a decision when comparing it to other options. While the ride may not be as smooth as some other vehicles, it's important to remember that it's a truck. Additionally, the infotainment screen is smaller than some of its competitors and there are fewer safety features than in comparable vehicles. Lastly, the fuel mileage could be improved. Overall, I appreciate the 4Runner for its durability and reliability, but I will continue to explore other options.

We recently traded our 2015 Toyota Highlander, which was spacious, comfortable, and powerful, for a new 2019 Forerunner SR5. Although we test drove the Forerunner twice, we didn't drive it far enough to notice that the front and rear seats weren't as comfortable as we had hoped. The seating position is also a bit odd, making it feel like you're sitting on the floor with your legs straight forward. While the engine is okay, it feels labored the whole time, especially when starting off from scratch or driving up a steeper hill. Unlike the Highlander, the Forerunner doesn't have an electric rear hatch closing button, which we really miss as the rear hatch is heavy and well strutted. Although the Forerunner has a bigger rear storage area, it's just not as comfortable to drive or ride in over longer distances. Additionally, the 4 doors seem to crowd sideways into your seating area, making it feel cramped. Fuel economy isn't great either. While the Forerunner's off-road capabilities are good, its ride is harsh on rough blacktop roads, especially at speed, and the steering takes some getting used to as the vehicle feels twitchy.
