The Toyota 4Runner is an SUV manufactured by the Japanese automaker Toyota and marketed globally since 1984, across five generations. In Japan, it was marketed as the Toyota Hilux Surf (Japanese: トヨタ・ハイラックスサーフ, Hepburn: Toyota Hairakkususāfu) and was withdrawn from the market in 2009. The original 4Runner was a compact SUV and little more than a Toyota Hilux pickup truck with a fiberglass shell over the bed, but the model has since undergone significant independent development into a cross between a compact and a mid-size SUV. All 4Runners have been built in Japan at Toyota's plant in Tahara, Aichi, or at the Hino Motors (a Toyota subsidiary) plant in Hamura.

The name "4Runner" was created by copywriter Robert Nathan with the Saatchi & Saatchi advertising company as a play on the term "forerunner". The agency held contests to invent new names for Toyota's forthcoming vehicles. According to Toyota, the "4" described the vehicle's 4-wheel drive system while "Runner" was a reference to its all-terrain capabilities and how it could "run" off-road.

For some markets, the Hilux Surf was replaced in 2005 by the similar Fortuner, which is based on the Hilux platform.

As of 2021, the 4Runner is marketed in the Bahamas, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, the United States and Venezuela. Many markets that did not receive the 4Runner, such as Europe and the Middle East, instead received the similarly designed Land Cruiser Prado, another SUV that shared many of the same components.

The 4Runner came in at number five in a 2019 study by iSeeCars.com ranking the longest-lasting vehicles in the US. The 4Runner had 3.9 percent of vehicles over 200,000 miles (320,000 km), according to the study.

Common 1992 Toyota 4runner problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Toyota 4Runner 1992, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Head Gasket Issues: The 1992 Toyota 4Runner is known to have significant problems with head gaskets. Owners have expressed concerns about the head gaskets causing the vehicle to run differently each time it is started. This issue can lead to inconsistent performance and potential engine damage.
  2. Injector Problems: Some owners have experienced difficulties with the injectors in the 1992 4Runner. This can result in poor fuel delivery, affecting the engine's performance and fuel efficiency. Addressing injector issues promptly is crucial to maintain the vehicle's optimal operation.
  3. Communication with Diagnostic Scanner: Another reported problem is the vehicle's reluctance to communicate with a diagnostic scanner. This issue can hinder the ability to diagnose and address underlying mechanical or electrical issues effectively. Troubleshooting this communication problem is essential for accurate vehicle diagnostics.
  4. Oil Leaks: Over time, the 3VZ-E engine in the 1992 Toyota 4Runner may develop oil leaks, particularly around the valve covers, oil-pan gaskets, and main crank seals. Regularly checking and topping off the oil is necessary to prevent engine damage and maintain proper lubrication.
  5. Starter Contact Issues: The 3VZ-E engine may also experience starter contact problems. These contacts, also known as starter solenoids, can wear out over time, leading to difficulties starting the vehicle. Replacing these components is recommended to ensure reliable engine starting.
  6. EGR System Concerns: The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system in the 3VZ-E engine can develop issues over time, such as charcoal canister clogging. Symptoms include poor gas mileage, rough idle, and difficulties starting the engine. Regular maintenance and timely replacement of clogged components are essential to prevent performance issues.

By addressing these common problems promptly and performing regular maintenance, owners of the Toyota 4Runner 1992 can ensure the longevity and optimal performance of their vehicles.

Is the 4Runner engine good?

The Toyota's 4.0-liter engine might be reliable, but it also reliably consumes fuel at an alarming rate. The truck's interior has plenty of passenger and cargo space, but its cabin materials are drab. On regular roads, this truck-based SUV drives like, well, a truck: its handling feels loose, and its ride is uncouth.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-02-28
  • VIN: JT3VN39W9N8
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: ON FEBRUARY 28, 2010, MY 1992 TOYOTA 4RUNNER HAD A REPEATED ACCELERATOR ISSUE. MY TRUCK ACCELERATED SEVERAL TIMES WHILE MY FOOT WAS OFF THE ACCELERATOR. I WAS STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT WHEN THE TRUCK SURGED FORWARD. I PRESSED ON THE BRAKE WITH BOTH FEET AND THE ACCELERATOR CONTINUED TO RACE. I WATCHED THE TACHOMETER GO FROM 1.1K RPM TO 4K RPM WITHOUT TOUCHING THE ACCELERATOR. THIS HAPPENED OVER AND OVER AGAIN OVER A 1/2 MILE STRETCH OF CITY BLOCKS (EL CAJON BLVD IN SAN DIEGO, CA). I HAD TO PULL OVER SEVERAL TIMES BECAUSE I COULD NOT CONTROL THE SPEED. IT WAS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. I REMOVED THE PLACEMAT AND THE ISSUE CONTINUED. IN FACT, WHEN I APPLIED PRESSURE ON THE ACCELERATOR, THE TACHOMETER WENT FROM 4K RPM TO 8K RPM IN THE RED ZONE EVEN THOUGH I WAS BARELY TOUCHING THE ACCELERATOR. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THIS HAS OCCURRED BUT IT WAS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AS I HAD TO PLACE THE TRUCK IN NEUTRAL WHEN ACTUALLY RIDING ON THE STREET JUST TO CONTROL MY SPEED. MY TRUCK HAS 143K MILES AND I HAVE NEVER HAD THIS ISSUE BEFORE. I AM WORRIED ABOUT MY NEXT TRIP. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-08-08
  • VIN: JT3VN39W7N0
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: I HAVE A 1992 TOYOTA 4RUNNER WITH V6 3VZE ENGINE WHICH TOYOTA KNOWS HAS A BAD HEAD DESIGN AND HEAD GASKET FAILURE. THEY HAVE A RECALL FOR ONE TIME ONLY REPLACEMENT WHICH WAS DOEN IN 97 AT 51K MI. BY THE PREVIOUS OWNER. LAST DEC. I STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS AND THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP DID NOT ADVISE ME THAT I HAD A BLOWN HEAD GASKET. THEY WANTED TO CHANGE OUT FUEL INJECTORS SINCE IT WAS RUNNING ROUGH. THE ROUGHNESS WAS FROM COOLANT LEAKING INTO THE CYLINDERS. AFTER RESEARCH I FOUND ALL THIS INFO. OUT. AT THE TIME I WAS IGNORANT AS TO THIS PROBLEM. FRED HAS TOYOTA SHOULD HAVE BEEN UP FRONT WITH ME AND ADVISED ME F THE SITUATION INSTEAD OF MAKING ME PAY FOR SOMETHING I DIDN'T NEED. AS THEY HAVE DONE TO ME IN THE PAST. THE EXHAUST GASES ESCAPING INTO THE COOLANT SYSTEM ARE OVER PRESSURIZE MY SYSTEM AND IT GOT TO THE POINT WHERE IT BLEW THE BOTTOM HOSE OFF THE RADIATOR. IF I WOULD HAVE BEEN IN A PARKING LOT OR EVEN MY OWN FAMILY WOULD HAVE BEEN STANDING 15 FEET IN FREON OF THE VEHICLE THEY WOULD HAVE HAD 3RD DEGREE BURNS. THUS, I HAD BEEN DRIVING IT SINCE DEC AND LEARNING OF WHAT MY PROBLEM IS. IT WAS A SLOW LEAK AT FIRST , BUT GOT PROGRESSIVELY WORSE. IT STARTED OVERHEATING ON ME SO I CHANGED THE THERMOSTAT, FAN CLUTCH. RADIATOR, AND RADIATOR CAP. PAID ALL THAT MONEY TO FIND OUT THAT DOES NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM IS THE EXHAUST GASES OVER PRESSURIZE THE COOLANT SYSTEM DUE TO THE BLOWN HEAD GASKET. TOYOTA HAS STOOD THEIR GROUND AND SAID THEY'VE LIVED UP TO THEIR ONE TIME ONLY RECALL. IM SURE YOU ARE ALREADY AWARE OF THIS "MASSIVE" AMOUNT OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THEIR HEAD GASKET PROBLEM. I JUST WISHED TOYOTA VALUED CUSTOMER SERVICE/LOYALTY. *JB

Negative 1992 Toyota 4runner car reviews

  1. Mekhi Lockman 2024-02-03

Regrettably, I have encountered some issues with my 1991 4 Runner SR5 4 door SUV Manual 2.4L 5 speed 4wd. Although I appreciate its appearance and interior, the 2.4L - 4 cylinder motor has been a recurring problem. I have had to replace it three times due to the oil pump filter clogging up and starving the engine of oil, resulting in blown engines. The engine lacks power, making it difficult to drive up hills with the flow of traffic. Additionally, the rear window up and down relay is prone to failure, which renders the back of the vehicle storage unusable. Despite these issues, I appreciate the vehicle's tires and overall design. However, I have decided to explore other options due to the recurring problems with the Toyota 4 Runner. I hope Toyota will address these issues in the future. The Rear Window Relay Switch, located on the rear left 1/4 panel underneath the plastic coverings, was the cause of the issue. Although the part itself is expensive at nearly $700.00 and the labor is intense at nearly $800.00, it was successfully replaced. While there are no youtube videos showing how to change this specific part, the issue has been resolved. However, the vehicle is currently experiencing an electrical issue where it drains a fully charged battery overnight, and the cause is unknown. Despite these challenges, I am confident that a solution can be found. While a new 4 Runner may not be necessary, I believe that Toyota should take responsibility for these issues and provide appropriate support. Let's work together to find a resolution.

  2. Humberto Strosin 2024-01-08

Although our experience with this vehicle has been challenging, we have learned a lot from it. We purchased it in Nov, 2001 with 115,000 miles on it and encountered some issues with the engine and transmission. Additionally, the electric motor on the back hatch is not functioning and the a/c requires attention. Despite these setbacks, we remain confident in our ability to address these issues and improve the vehicle's performance. We have owned many used cars in the past, and we are determined to make this one work.

Positive 1992 Toyota 4runner car reviews

I bought a 1991 4runner 4x4 5speed 4 cylinder brand new. It now has 265000. The truck runs great as long as it is maintained and not abused. The transmission and 4x4 setup are flawless and built like a tank. The engine was rebuilt at 220,000, but it probably could have gone much further. I wanted my son to have a very reliable rig, so I had it rebuilt. The driver seat needs recovering and could use a paint refresh, but overall it has been one reliable vehicle. I have never regretted buying this truck and was glad I got the 4 cylinder engine. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles like the 6 cylinder, but it just keeps on running. If you can pick up a well-maintained 4 cylinder, even with high mileage, you have found a machine that can give you years of reliable service. Update 11/02/2023 - The 4runner has about 280,000 on it now and is still running strong. I use it mostly as a camping or overland vehicle since I have other daily drivers. I had the interior seats recovered, added a roof rack, solar panel with inverter and battery backup in the rear, 3 row radiator for superior cooling, and upgraded with Eibach Pro-Truck springs and shocks for about a 2 inch lift. My opinion of this very reliable and sturdy little SUV has not changed. After all this time, there have been no serious maintenance issues, it passes smog every year, and it runs like a champ.

I've only owned this truck for a short time, but it's already proven to be one of the most durable, dependable, and versatile vehicles out there. I've even pulled my buddies out of monster snow drifts with it! Living in Canada, I can attest that starting in cold weather is not an issue, and I've never - let me say that again - never gotten stuck in this truck. I absolutely love it! The only downside is the fuel economy, but that's to be expected when driving a truck. Don't expect to get 400 miles to a tank, but I promise it will get you through damn near anything.

I purchased my truck in '94 and it now has 201,000 miles with very minimal repairs besides normal upkeep. The motor was replaced at 120,000 miles due to a blown head gasket, but Toyota stepped up and covered all expenses due to a recall. I've considered selling this truck several times, but after shopping around, I couldn't find anything out there that could do the job better than this truck has for the past 15 years. I absolutely love this truck!

This is one of the best vehicles ever! It was my first vehicle and I absolutely love it. It's in great shape and a lot of my friends are jealous when they ride with me. I think all Toyotas are great!

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 4Runner. I actually bought it back in 1995 after owning 2 Toyota 1 ton trucks. I was so impressed with their reliability that I knew I wanted another Toyota. And let me tell you, the 4Runner has exceeded all my expectations! It's definitely the best vehicle I've ever owned, even though it's a little underpowered. In the 9 years that I've had it, it's only needed normal maintenance. I'm actually planning on buying a 2003 model this fall because I just can't imagine driving anything else. It's reliable, cost-effective, and gives me peace of mind. I highly recommend it!
