1991 Toyota 4runner problems
The Toyota 4Runner is an SUV manufactured by the Japanese automaker Toyota and marketed globally since 1984, across five generations. In Japan, it was marketed as the Toyota Hilux Surf (Japanese: トヨタ・ハイラックスサーフ, Hepburn: Toyota Hairakkususāfu) and was withdrawn from the market in 2009. The original 4Runner was a compact SUV and little more than a Toyota Hilux pickup truck with a fiberglass shell over the bed, but the model has since undergone significant independent development into a cross between a compact and a mid-size SUV. All 4Runners have been built in Japan at Toyota's plant in Tahara, Aichi, or at the Hino Motors (a Toyota subsidiary) plant in Hamura.
The name "4Runner" was created by copywriter Robert Nathan with the Saatchi & Saatchi advertising company as a play on the term "forerunner". The agency held contests to invent new names for Toyota's forthcoming vehicles. According to Toyota, the "4" described the vehicle's 4-wheel drive system while "Runner" was a reference to its all-terrain capabilities and how it could "run" off-road.
For some markets, the Hilux Surf was replaced in 2005 by the similar Fortuner, which is based on the Hilux platform.
As of 2021, the 4Runner is marketed in the Bahamas, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, the United States and Venezuela. Many markets that did not receive the 4Runner, such as Europe and the Middle East, instead received the similarly designed Land Cruiser Prado, another SUV that shared many of the same components.
The 4Runner came in at number five in a 2019 study by iSeeCars.com ranking the longest-lasting vehicles in the US. The 4Runner had 3.9 percent of vehicles over 200,000 miles (320,000 km), according to the study.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my 4Runner. It started as a second vehicle, but now I use it as my daily driver. Despite being driven regularly, it runs like a top! I do have to make a few minor repairs every year or so, but after that, I'm ready to roll. My biggest complaint is that the light blue paint doesn't hold up well under the Arizona sun. Unfortunately, the roof and hood look like garbage due to oxidized paint, but I'm still driving her!
-
Great fun driving car.

This was my first vehicle and I absolutely loved it! My friends loved it too and I received so many compliments on it. The previous owner had added a brush guard, rear light covers, and a safari rack, which made it look even cooler. The tire was located on the back of the truck, which added to its rugged charm. I took this beauty off-road all the time and it never got stuck, not even once! Even my best friend, who is a Jeep fanatic, had to admit that my 4Runner was pretty impressive after I pulled him out of a sticky situation a few times. Before I went to BUD/s school to become a Navy SEAL, I took it out to the Rocky Mountains and had the time of my life. Admittedly, I did have a few problems with it from beating the crap out of it, but all in all, it's the best truck I've ever had!
-
You're in for a treat with this vehicle! We've been the proud owners since 1995, and we're only the second owners. We've had no unusual repairs throughout the years, and it's been a reliable companion. We're only considering parting ways with it now, at 230,000 miles, because it needs new seals. While it could use a bit more power at higher speeds, it's geared for 4WD, and it still gets better gas mileage than the new models!
-
I purchased my truck in '94 and it now has 201,000 miles with very minimal repairs besides normal upkeep. The motor was replaced at 120,000 miles due to a blown head gasket, but Toyota stepped up and covered all expenses due to a recall. I've considered selling this truck several times, but after shopping around, I couldn't find anything out there that could do the job better than this truck has for the past 15 years. I absolutely love this truck!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with a Toyota dealer. I purchased a vehicle from them when it had just under 100,000 miles. Unfortunately, I found that it didn't have enough power and the 4WD system never worked right. Additionally, there was always a loud banging sound and a lurching when the 4WD was disengaged, even after only 5 minutes of driving. The passenger cab was also a bit cramped. After about a year and 10 to 12 thousand miles, the engine blew a rod. I was a bit disappointed because I thought Toyotas were supposed to last forever, or at least 150,000 miles. However, I've owned Chevy, Acura, VW, and Toyota, and I've learned that it doesn't matter what you buy, you may or may not get lucky. Thanks for listening to my story!

Good car for smaller people, although I would love more leg room. I have had mine for 5 years now, bought used. I have had some major repair bills, mostly with the A/C and fuel injectors. However, it is still a great looking car and built like a tank. I have been rear-ended 3 times with no damage! I feel very safe when I can keep it running....

Regrettably, I have encountered some issues with my 1991 4 Runner SR5 4 door SUV Manual 2.4L 5 speed 4wd. Although I appreciate its appearance and interior, the 2.4L - 4 cylinder motor has been a recurring problem. I have had to replace it three times due to the oil pump filter clogging up and starving the engine of oil, resulting in blown engines. The engine lacks power, making it difficult to drive up hills with the flow of traffic. Additionally, the rear window up and down relay is prone to failure, which renders the back of the vehicle storage unusable. Despite these issues, I appreciate the vehicle's tires and overall design. However, I have decided to explore other options due to the recurring problems with the Toyota 4 Runner. I hope Toyota will address these issues in the future. The Rear Window Relay Switch, located on the rear left 1/4 panel underneath the plastic coverings, was the cause of the issue. Although the part itself is expensive at nearly $700.00 and the labor is intense at nearly $800.00, it was successfully replaced. While there are no youtube videos showing how to change this specific part, the issue has been resolved. However, the vehicle is currently experiencing an electrical issue where it drains a fully charged battery overnight, and the cause is unknown. Despite these challenges, I am confident that a solution can be found. While a new 4 Runner may not be necessary, I believe that Toyota should take responsibility for these issues and provide appropriate support. Let's work together to find a resolution.
