2001 Toyota 4runner problems
The Toyota 4Runner is an SUV manufactured by the Japanese automaker Toyota and marketed globally since 1984, across five generations. In Japan, it was marketed as the Toyota Hilux Surf (Japanese: トヨタ・ハイラックスサーフ, Hepburn: Toyota Hairakkususāfu) and was withdrawn from the market in 2009. The original 4Runner was a compact SUV and little more than a Toyota Hilux pickup truck with a fiberglass shell over the bed, but the model has since undergone significant independent development into a cross between a compact and a mid-size SUV. All 4Runners have been built in Japan at Toyota's plant in Tahara, Aichi, or at the Hino Motors (a Toyota subsidiary) plant in Hamura.
The name "4Runner" was created by copywriter Robert Nathan with the Saatchi & Saatchi advertising company as a play on the term "forerunner". The agency held contests to invent new names for Toyota's forthcoming vehicles. According to Toyota, the "4" described the vehicle's 4-wheel drive system while "Runner" was a reference to its all-terrain capabilities and how it could "run" off-road.
For some markets, the Hilux Surf was replaced in 2005 by the similar Fortuner, which is based on the Hilux platform.
As of 2021, the 4Runner is marketed in the Bahamas, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, the United States and Venezuela. Many markets that did not receive the 4Runner, such as Europe and the Middle East, instead received the similarly designed Land Cruiser Prado, another SUV that shared many of the same components.
The 4Runner came in at number five in a 2019 study by iSeeCars.com ranking the longest-lasting vehicles in the US. The 4Runner had 3.9 percent of vehicles over 200,000 miles (320,000 km), according to the study.

Common 2001 Toyota 4runner problems
The Toyota 4Runner is known for its reliability, but like any vehicle, it has some common problems. The 2001-2002 4Runner models, which belong to the third generation, are particularly susceptible to rust and corrosion issues.
Another common issue with the 2001-2002 4Runner models is the lack of a manual transmission and locking rear differential, which significantly decreases the vehicle's off-road capabilities compared to earlier models.
For the 2003-2005 4Runner models, rust buildup on the body and undercarriage is a significant problem, with the 2004 models also experiencing a terrible problem with dashboard cracking.
Head gasket problems are another severe issue affecting the 2003-2005 4Runner models, which can impact how the vehicle runs and are expensive to repair.
In summary, the 2001-2002 4Runner models are particularly susceptible to rust and corrosion issues, while the 2003-2005 models suffer from rust buildup, dashboard cracking, and head gasket problems. It's essential to thoroughly inspect these models for these common issues before purchasing or driving them, especially if they have high mileage or have been driven in areas with harsh winter conditions or salt on the roads.

- Summary: THE FRAME ON MY 2001 ROTTED VERY QUICKLY FROM THE INSIDE OUT. IT IS THE SAME EXACT FRAME USED ON THE TACOMA (WHICH WAS RECALLED) AND ON THE 2002 4RUNNER, WHICH IS CURRENTLY UNDER INVESTIGATION. IF I DIDN'T GET THE NECESSARY FRAME REPAIRS IT EASILY COULD HAVE CRACKED IN HALF WHEN ON THE ROAD. THE MAIN AREAS OF ROT ARE LOCATED AT THE REAR CONTROL ARM (WHICH I HAD PROFESSIONALLY REPAIRED), AND UP FRONT NEAR THE SUSPENSION AND AXLE. MY BROTHERS 1997 4RUNNER AXLE AND SUSPENSION COMPLETELY FELL APART WHEN HE WAS DRIVING ON THE ROAD. HE WAS LUCKY TO NOT BE ON THE HIGHWAY. SOMEONE DEFINITELY NEEDS TO LOOK INTO THIS ISSUE. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM THE SOUTH FOUR YEARS AGO (2014) WITH A SPOTLESS ROCK HARD FRAME. FOUR YEARS LATER THE REAR CONTROL ARM AREAS MENTIONED ABOVE COMPLETELY ROTTED THROUGH. THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN! I LOVE MY 4RUNNER, BUT I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW THESE TRUCK FRAMES WEREN'T RECALLED ALONG WITH THE TACOMA FRAMES. IT IS THE SAME EXACT FRAME...

The cab feels quite limited in space, and I often feel cramped while driving. It would be great if there was more headroom, especially for those with a sunroof. However, the ride is very smooth.

I bought my 3rd generation 4Runner in 2014 as a second vehicle with 200k on the odometer. After weeks of searching Craigslist and inspecting several vehicles, I found the cleanest single-owner vehicle with service records for $5500. It now has just over 210,000 miles on it and has been a joy to own. I've done very little to it, except drive it on weekends, change the oil annually, and keep it clean. I did have to make a minor repair when I first bought it, but with the help of Toyota forums and YouTube videos, I was able to fix it myself and save a lot of money. I also added a transmission oil cooler to prevent any potential issues. The support community of fellow owners is fantastic and I've found the truck to be incredibly reliable and well-made. It's a truck, so it rides like one, but everything works and nothing doesn't. I could even sell it tomorrow for exactly what I paid for it. How many other vehicles can you say that about?
Kevin Mayert 2024-11-08
I bought this car used at 30K miles and it has been a great investment. According to the dealer, it had only one previous owner and showed no signs of wear and tear. Now, at 106K miles, I have had virtually no repairs, except for routine maintenance such as one tune-up and one brake replacement. The front seats are a bit crowded and could use an extra 2 inches on each side. The cloth upholstery on this one is starting to show some wear and tear, but I plan to sew up the seams myself. The car handles great in the snow with its 4WD and excellent traction control. The engine runs smoothly and there is virtually zero vibration at idle. Although it is slightly underpowered with its 5-cylinder engine, it has a tow package that is easy to hook up. It is important to note that this car has a truck frame, so it does not have a soft 'car' ride, but that is to be expected from a true SUV that can off-road with the best of them. I keep it well-maintained with regular oil changes and transmission lubrication. Overall, it is a great product that I highly recommend.

My wife drives the 4Runner 90% of the time and guess what? She has no complaints! Unlike with most other cars, where there's always something to complain about - too big, too small, not comfortable enough, etc. The 4Runner is a hit! I also drive it on weekends and find it quite enjoyable. It has good response and is comfortable. Sometimes, I even use it to tow my quad or commercial mower with a good-sized trailer and it has plenty of torque for a V6. We've had it for about 4 years and it's just like when we got it, just a little older. Unfortunately, my wife did get into an accident about 6 months ago. Some moron decided to come into the wrong lane to avoid my wife carrying 3 children aged 7 to 15. The accident snapped the rear axle in half, spun the car 180 degrees, and caused $7K of damage. Thankfully, everyone was safe.

My husband bought this 4Runner for me used with 100k mi on it. I had no problem with the miles as it was all still as tight as the day it was new. I put another 40k on it before I traded it in 2 weeks ago. I loved it. There is room for 4 large adults comfortably, 5 if one is a smaller child with no car seat. But I have had 5 with one in car seat many times and it wasn't too bad. I never once had any doubts about getting in it and driving where ever I needed to go. I routinely got 18.5 mpg mixed and 21 mpg highway. With the back seats down it can hold a lot of crap. The front seats are ok for short distances but over a long drive the seats can get hard.
