The Toyota 4Runner is an SUV manufactured by the Japanese automaker Toyota and marketed globally since 1984, across five generations. In Japan, it was marketed as the Toyota Hilux Surf (Japanese: トヨタ・ハイラックスサーフ, Hepburn: Toyota Hairakkususāfu) and was withdrawn from the market in 2009. The original 4Runner was a compact SUV and little more than a Toyota Hilux pickup truck with a fiberglass shell over the bed, but the model has since undergone significant independent development into a cross between a compact and a mid-size SUV. All 4Runners have been built in Japan at Toyota's plant in Tahara, Aichi, or at the Hino Motors (a Toyota subsidiary) plant in Hamura.
The name "4Runner" was created by copywriter Robert Nathan with the Saatchi & Saatchi advertising company as a play on the term "forerunner". The agency held contests to invent new names for Toyota's forthcoming vehicles. According to Toyota, the "4" described the vehicle's 4-wheel drive system while "Runner" was a reference to its all-terrain capabilities and how it could "run" off-road.
For some markets, the Hilux Surf was replaced in 2005 by the similar Fortuner, which is based on the Hilux platform.
As of 2021, the 4Runner is marketed in the Bahamas, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, the United States and Venezuela. Many markets that did not receive the 4Runner, such as Europe and the Middle East, instead received the similarly designed Land Cruiser Prado, another SUV that shared many of the same components.
The 4Runner came in at number five in a 2019 study by iSeeCars.com ranking the longest-lasting vehicles in the US. The 4Runner had 3.9 percent of vehicles over 200,000 miles (320,000 km), according to the study.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2001 Toyota 4runner.
- Manufacturer: CK MOTORSPORT, INC.
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: CERTAIN CK MOTORSPORTS COMBINATION HEADLIGHTS, CLEAR CORNER, BUMPER, AND SIDE MARKER LIGHTS SOLD AS REPLACEMENT LAMPS FOR USE ON THE PASSENGER VEHICLES LISTED ABOVE. SOME COMBINATION LAMPS THAT ARE NOT EQUIPPED WITH AMBER SIDE REFLECTORS FAIL TO CONFORM TO FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 108, LAMPS, REFLECTIVE DEVICES, AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT.
- Consequence: WITHOUT THE AMBER REFLECTORS, THE VEHICLE WILL BE POORLY ILLUMINATED, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A VEHICLE CRASH WITHOUT WARNING.
- Remedy: CK MOTORSPORT WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPLACE THE NONCOMPLIANT LAMPS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 1, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CK MOTORSPORT AT 1-909-610-7211.

- Summary: CERTAIN PRO-A MOTORS CORNER LAMPS, TURN SIGNALS, AND HEADLIGHTS SOLD AS REPLACEMENT LAMPS FOR USE ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES LISTED ABOVE. SOME COMBINATION LAMPS THAT ARE NOT EQUIPPED WITH AMBER SIDE REFLECTORS FAIL TO CONFORM TO FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 108, LAMPS, REFLECTIVE DEVICES, AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT.

- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER BALL JOINT
- Summary: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, DUE TO A MANUFACTURING ISSUE IN THE FRONT SUSPENSION LOWER BALL JOINT, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE SURFACE OF THE BALL OF THE JOINT MAY HAVE BEEN SCRATCHED. THE BALL JOINT MAY EVENTUALLY EXPERIENCE EXCESSIVE WEAR AND LOOSENESS, RESULTING IN INCREASED STEERING EFFORT.
- Consequence: THE LOWER BALL JOINT MAY SEPARATE FROM THE KNUCKLE CAUSING LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AND A CRASH COULD OCCUR.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FRONT SUSPENSION LOWER BALL JOINTS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 5, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

I drove this thing from Waterloo, IA all the way to PHX, AZ without stopping (besides to get gas). Never overheated, and I was hauling an 8-foot aluminum trailer. The engine is not powerful by any means, but it is reliable. The seats are comfy and the interior design is simple with room for mods. I honestly believe this SUV is the best ever made.

Hi there! I'm excited to share my experience with my 4runner. Even though it had 208,000 miles on it when I purchased it slightly used, it has been the best vehicle I've ever owned! The seats are very well designed and it rides like a truck, but what I love most is how utterly reliable it has been. I've only had to replace the brakes and battery, and it still has the original exhaust. As a hunter living in Michigan, I've taken this thing through deep snow, mud, and two tracks that have stopped larger 4-wheel trucks, and the 4-wheel drive system is perfect. I can even fit 4x8 plywood in the back and haul a lot of gear of various types. The fuel economy has been acceptable for an SUV, and the performance is good enough for everything except heavy hauling. I'm actually looking to get another one, but I may consider a Highlander. I wish I could give this review 6 stars! The writer bought their 2001 car in 2010 with 156k miles on it and now, at 292k miles, it's still running like a top. They've only had to do a couple of water pump/timing belt services, brakes (Tundra brake upgrade), an alternator, and just recently their catalytic converters. Not many vehicles can outlast their catalytic converters, which is pretty incredible! The leather still looks great and the car is practically a part of the writer at this point. If you take care of this car, it will take care of you. The writer will never sell it, even if they get another car (which they will soon due to advances in technology). This beauty will remain their mountain/adventure rig. The Canadian version is also a great option, as it displays temperature in Celsius (cannot be changed) and comes without the rear spoiler. The design is timeless and it's still one of the best-looking SUVs on the road in the writer's opinion. If you can find one in good shape, buy it! The Limited trim is suggested for the leather, power/heated seats, etc. Another great thing about this car is that if you're handy with a wrench, it's super friendly to work on. There's lots of room and minimal plastics covering things. The writer has done valve cover gasket, brakes, alternator, and O2 sensors all themselves.

The cab feels quite limited in space, and I often feel cramped while driving. It would be great if there was more headroom, especially for those with a sunroof. However, the ride is very smooth.

I bought my 3rd generation 4Runner in 2014 as a second vehicle with 200k on the odometer. After weeks of searching Craigslist and inspecting several vehicles, I found the cleanest single-owner vehicle with service records for $5500. It now has just over 210,000 miles on it and has been a joy to own. I've done very little to it, except drive it on weekends, change the oil annually, and keep it clean. I did have to make a minor repair when I first bought it, but with the help of Toyota forums and YouTube videos, I was able to fix it myself and save a lot of money. I also added a transmission oil cooler to prevent any potential issues. The support community of fellow owners is fantastic and I've found the truck to be incredibly reliable and well-made. It's a truck, so it rides like one, but everything works and nothing doesn't. I could even sell it tomorrow for exactly what I paid for it. How many other vehicles can you say that about?
