2007 Toyota 4runner problems

The Toyota 4Runner is an SUV manufactured by the Japanese automaker Toyota and marketed globally since 1984, across five generations. In Japan, it was marketed as the Toyota Hilux Surf (Japanese: トヨタ・ハイラックスサーフ, Hepburn: Toyota Hairakkususāfu) and was withdrawn from the market in 2009. The original 4Runner was a compact SUV and little more than a Toyota Hilux pickup truck with a fiberglass shell over the bed, but the model has since undergone significant independent development into a cross between a compact and a mid-size SUV. All 4Runners have been built in Japan at Toyota's plant in Tahara, Aichi, or at the Hino Motors (a Toyota subsidiary) plant in Hamura.
The name "4Runner" was created by copywriter Robert Nathan with the Saatchi & Saatchi advertising company as a play on the term "forerunner". The agency held contests to invent new names for Toyota's forthcoming vehicles. According to Toyota, the "4" described the vehicle's 4-wheel drive system while "Runner" was a reference to its all-terrain capabilities and how it could "run" off-road.
For some markets, the Hilux Surf was replaced in 2005 by the similar Fortuner, which is based on the Hilux platform.
As of 2021, the 4Runner is marketed in the Bahamas, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, the United States and Venezuela. Many markets that did not receive the 4Runner, such as Europe and the Middle East, instead received the similarly designed Land Cruiser Prado, another SUV that shared many of the same components.
The 4Runner came in at number five in a 2019 study by iSeeCars.com ranking the longest-lasting vehicles in the US. The 4Runner had 3.9 percent of vehicles over 200,000 miles (320,000 km), according to the study.

Common 2007 Toyota 4runner problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 2007 Toyota 4Runner, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:
- Excessive Rust in Frame and Suspension: Many drivers have reported excessive rust in the frame and suspension of the 2007 Toyota 4Runner, making the vehicle unsafe to drive. This corrosion can extend to the point of causing shocks and struts to fail, requiring costly replacements or even a new frame.
- Unintended Acceleration: Some owners have experienced instances where the 4Runner revs up from park, leading to unintended acceleration. While a recall was issued for pedal entrapment in 2011, it is unclear how many of these acceleration complaints are related to the recall.
- Fuel Gauge Cluster Issues: A few owners have noted inaccuracies in the fuel gauge display, with reports of the gauge showing incorrect fuel levels. This issue can lead to confusion and potential inconvenience for drivers.
- Limited Versatility: The lack of a fold-flat third row in the 2007 4Runner limits its versatility, as removing the back seats entirely is necessary to haul larger items. This design aspect may hinder the vehicle's utility for those needing more cargo space.
- High Maintenance Costs: Despite being overpriced for its age, the 2007 Toyota 4Runner comes with low maintenance costs and relatively cheaper refueling compared to other vehicles in its class. However, the initial high sticker price may take a long time to offset with these savings.
These problems highlight some of the key issues that owners of the 2007 Toyota 4Runner have faced. Addressing these concerns promptly and proactively can help maintain the vehicle's performance and safety over time.

Is the 4Runner engine good?

Yes, it is available for inspection, and the local Toyota dealer did have a look and rendered it unsafe for the road. Apparently when the rust finally breaks, I will be hurled into oncoming traffic, endangering myself, my passengers and other drivers and passengers on the road nearby. No lamps, lights or other warnings were noted, yes, this vehicle was inspected by Charlie's Toyota in Augusta, Maine and deemed unsafe for the road due to dangerous frame corrosion, particularly surrounding the steering control arm, and rear axle control arm mounts causing severe safety hazards. There was a label saying the frame was sealed by the manufacturer, so I do not see how this is possible.

- Summary: The Undercarriage of my 2007Toyota 4runner sport has irregular rusting issue. The truck has 128,000 miles on it and has been well maintained and garaged most of its life. I was under it the other day to check the exhaust system and noticed the frame is rusting like no other car I know of. Even cars that sat in junkyards for decades. I know they had a recall for similar issues with other vehicles within the same year. However, when I spoke with Toyota they were uninterested in helping me and told me it was my problem. Other than the frame rust the truck is in perfect condition. Is this something that you can help me with. I see I am not alone having this issue and that it is well reported. Please let me know what my options are for getting this defect corrected by Toyota. Thanks, [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

THE REAR OF THE FRAME BY THE BUMPER, WHERE THE CONTROL ARMS AND RADIATOR ARE ATTACHED TO THE CHASSIS AND FRAME RAILS ARE SO BADLY CORRODED YOU CAN PUSH YOUR FINGER THROUGH THE METAL. LOOK AT THE HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS TO NHTSA AND THOUSANDS OF OWNERS ONLINE POSTING PICTURES AND VIDEOS OF THEIR VEHICLES RUST ISSUES. THERE IS A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH THESE VEHICLES CORRODING JUST LIKE THE OTHER TOYOTA BODY ON FRAME PRODUCTS THAT WERE RECALLED FOR FRAME REPLACEMENTS. WE OWN TRUCKS 30-40 YEARS OLD AND NOT ONE OF THEM HAS EVER HAD A FRAME RUST THROUGH TO THE POINT YOU CAN LITERALLY POKE HOLES IN IT WITH YOUR FINGER. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE ON A VEHICLE 10-15 YEARS OLD. [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

- Summary: VEHICLE HAS PREMATURE EXCESSIVE RUST OF THE FRAME AND ASSOCIATED COMPONENTS AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN THE SAME RECALL MY 05 SEQUOIA (AS WELL AS TACOMAS AND TUNDRAS) OF THE SAME ERA SINCE ALL WERE MANUFACTURED WITH THE SAME PROCESS THAT LACKED ADEQUATE APPLICATION OF RUST PROTECTION/COATING. MANY OTHERS ON HERE AS WELL AS ONLINE ON OTHER SITES ALSO ARE REPORTING THIS GENERATION OF 4RUNNER TO HAVE RUSTING. I HAVE RUSTED MOTOR MOUNTS THAT CAUSE MOTOR VIBRATION, RUSTED BRACKETS HOLDING MY GAS TANK TO THE FRAME, I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE ALL TRANSMISSION LINES DUE TO RUST THAT LEFT ME STRANDED WHILE MOVING ACROSS THE COUNTRY. I HAVE HAD TO DO REPLACE SEVERAL RUSTED PARTS LIKE CV AXELS, WHEEL BARRINGS, AND POSSIBLY RUSTED STEERING BOX LEAK/RACK AND PINION (CONFLICTING INFO FROM2 MECHANICS SO UNDETERMINED). I PURCHASED THIS IN 2014 AND JUST PAID IT OFF AND NEED HELP AS IT SHOULD HAVE LASTED ME MORE THAN 7 YRS AND SHOULD NOT HAVE HAD THIS KIND OF RUST IN YRS 7-11 AFTER BEING MADE! IT HAS LOW MILES AND SHOULD HAVE LASTED MANY YEARS TO COME. EVERYTHING ELSE IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION BUT THIS FRAME ISSUE THEY EXCLUDED THIS MODEL FROM NEEDS TO BE EXTENDED FOR 4RUNNERS IN THE SAME GENERATIONS OF THE RECALL MENTIONED ABOVE. THIS IS LEAVING MANY DRIVERS WHO PAID THE EXTRA PRICETAG TO HAVE A TOYOTA LEFT WITH A FINACIAL LOSS OF PURCHASE AS WELL AS LOSS OF USE OF A VEHICLE. PLEASE LOOK AT ALL THE COMPLAINTS. SOME ARE MISLABELED ON THIS SITE BUT DESCRIPTIONS SHOW IT IS A FRAME ISSUE THAT CAUSES MANY SECONDARY ISSUES/RELATED REPAIRS. I HAVE TAKEN EXCELLENT CARE OF THIS VEHICLE AND JUST OUT A LOT MORE MONEY INTO IT AT THE DEALERSHIP WITH REPAIRS SINCE NO ONE SAID IT WAS RUSTED LIKE THIS. AFTER MOVING, I HAVE HAD 3 NON-DEALERSHIP MECHANICS TELL ME IT IS BAD. PLEASE CONTACT ME WITH AN UPDATE.

After looking and researching vehicles for about a year, I finally narrowed it down to either a 4Runner or a Ford Explorer. I really wanted to buy domestic, but after much research, the Explorer was no match for the 4Runner. The 4Runner has a great ride, bulletproof quality, and dependability. Toyota does it again!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my new car. Originally, I was looking for a Lexus RX 350, but I needed something more practical to transport my teenagers. I'm happy to say that I absolutely love my new car! Even my friends with Mercedes are asking me if I like it. Of course, I do! Unfortunately, someone keyed my car recently, but thankfully I have insurance to cover it. It's such a shame that someone would do that to my beautiful red 4Runner. The only thing I wish it had was a light on the window control panel. Sometimes, when it's dark, I have trouble finding the right button. Additionally, I think it could get better gas mileage and have a panel that shows how much gas I'm using per mileage and how much gas/miles I have left to use. Overall, though, I'm really happy with my purchase!

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your SUV! Even though you were hoping for an 8 cylinder, it sounds like the 6 is still doing a great job. The sunroof and power rear window are definitely nice touches that add to the overall experience. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this midsize SUV!
-
I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a great experience with your SUV! It's amazing that you've been able to drive 75,000 miles without any problems. From the global statistics and data, it's clear that the 4Runner/Prado/Hilux/etc is a reliable and trustworthy vehicle. The build quality is top-notch, with no rattles or squeaks no matter the driving conditions. The 4x4 capabilities are truly impressive, responding exactly how you want them to. While the interior may not be the most exciting, it definitely gets the job done. And the Koito projector head/fog lights and rear LED are both high-performing and long-lasting. It's no wonder you'll never go back to Ford, Chrysler, GM, etc - Toyota truly delivers on its promise of quality.

Bought a used 2007 with 174,000 miles and it looks and feels brand new. I've owned many vehicles, but this is my favorite by far. It has the smoothest ride, and I love the height. It's the only vehicle that has a back window that rolls down, which is great, and I also love that the body is narrow. It's a very solid and well-made car!

Despite the 4Runner being brought to the dealership four times for steering vibration, flutter, and pulsing, the issue has yet to be resolved. The Toyota technical representative has been collaborating with the dealership to identify and address the problem, but repeated tire balancing has not yielded any results. While the dealership has suggested that the vibration is normal for the vehicle, I remain dissatisfied with the quality of the product. As an owner with only 2000 miles on the vehicle, I expect better from Toyota.

This is a good truck that is better on gas than most SUVs. However, there are some downfalls to consider. The truck tends to float on the highway and has a lot of blind spots, especially the 3rd window and the wide panel between the 2nd and 3rd. Additionally, the roof is quite low or the seats are high, which may cause inconvenience if you have a kid in a car seat. The trunk is also quite heavy and may require extra assistance to close it. On the bright side, it would be great to see a dual sunroof in the future.
