The Toyota 4Runner is an SUV manufactured by the Japanese automaker Toyota and marketed globally since 1984, across five generations. In Japan, it was marketed as the Toyota Hilux Surf (Japanese: トヨタ・ハイラックスサーフ, Hepburn: Toyota Hairakkususāfu) and was withdrawn from the market in 2009. The agency held contests to invent new names for Toyota's forthcoming vehicles. According to Toyota, the "4" described the vehicle's 4-wheel drive system while "Runner" was a reference to its all-terrain capabilities and how it could "run" off-road.

For some markets, the Hilux Surf was replaced in 2005 by the similar Fortuner, which is based on the Hilux platform.

As of 2021, the 4Runner is marketed in the Bahamas, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, the United States and Venezuela. Many markets that did not receive the 4Runner, such as Europe and the Middle East, instead received the similarly designed Land Cruiser Prado, another SUV that shared many of the same components.

The 4Runner came in at number five in a 2019 study by iSeeCars.com ranking the longest-lasting vehicles in the US. The 4Runner had 3.9 percent of vehicles over 200,000 miles (320,000 km), according to the study.

I recently was getting some work done at a different dealership because a friend works there and I was explaining to him the situation and he said that isn't right and I needed to look more into and see about having Toyota fix the problem. I have sense called them back and they are still giving me the same run around and are still very rude.   • Summary: Car keeps running out of gas while driving, due to faulty readings on the gas gauge and electronic readout. I have been driving this car for 11 years and never ran out of gas until running out 3 times in the past 2 months. Today was the 3rd occurrence, gas gauge showed over 1/4 tank and 85 miles to go until empty. Previous incident was similar with 1/4 tank and showing 65 miles to go. (Pictures attached). The miles to go reading seems to be increasing with each incident (1st incident showed 25 miles, second incident 65 miles, then 85 miles today). No low fuel indicator light or warning has appeared on ANY of these 3 occasions. This is a very dangerous situation potentially causing loss of life as drivers have SECONDS to navigate their vehicle off the highway, while quickly losing speed and loss of steering. No indication that fuel is low, while instead providing incorrect (inflated) dashboard data. Vehicle is going into the shop tomorrow.   • Summary: I own a 2010 Toyota 4Runner VIN # [XXX]. I bought the vehicle late last year and found that the vehicle paint was peeling. I took my 4Runner to the one and only dealer here in Laredo, Texas. They told me to take it to their company body shop. The body shop looked at my 4Runner, took pictures and submitted everything to Toyota. This was late November or early December 2021. I called the body shop back in January. The body shop manager told me it had been approved to paint all the metal panels on the truck, but that I would have to wait until May of 2022. In May of 2022 I physically went back to ask the body shop manager about the truck getting painted. He said that it would not be painted until August, but that if I did not want to wait I could “take it somewhere else”. After waiting all of this time I did not want to start all over again somewhere else, so I told him that I would leave it there. Sometime in late June or early July 2022 I physically went to check with the to see if my truck could be painted, and the body shop manager told me that he did not know when but I was the "fourth one in line". I did not want to lose all my “wait time” and have to start all over again. I am very concerned that my 2010 4Runner will not get the paint job that Toyota already knows it needs before the expiration date of December 11, 2022. I have reached out to Toyota Brand Engagement Center and have spoken to them to exhaustion about the fact that it appears that my truck will not get painted (case# [XXX]). Toyota refuses to provide me with documentation that the claim for paint was submitted and approved (documentation I can use to protect myself should the expiration date come and go without getting painted). Toyota also refuses to extend the expiration date of the paint program to allow for paint job approvals that have not been completed. I have tried to make a claim on my own insurance which was subsequently denied. They said to contact Toyota. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 45,000. **TR CONSUMER STATED: FOR THE LAST FOUR YEARS THE STATIONARY AND MOVABLE WINDOWS AROUND MY FORERUNNER THE RUBBER SEALING AROUND THE BOTTOM OF THEM, THAT PREVENTS WATER FROM GOING INSIDE THE BODY AND THE DOORS, HAVE BEEN CURLING UP THE FALLING OFF. SINCE THERE IS A LOT OF ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS IN THE DOORS THIS CAN CAUSE AN EXTREME ELECTRICAL FIRE, AND POSSIBLY INTERFERING WITH THE COMPUTER OPERATING SYSTEM THAT COULD EFFECT THE VEHICLE DRIVING ABILITY. NOW THE MASSIVE SKID PLATE BRACKET RUSTED OFF. TOYOTA SERVICE JUST REMOVED THE ENTIRE UNREPAIRABLE SKID PLATE DUE TO THE LEVEL OF RUST. THERE IS NOTHING LEFT TO ATTACH TO. THE MECHANICS SAID THEY WERE AFRAID TO SCRAPE OR CHIP ANY MORE RUST BECAUSE THEY WERE AFRAID THAT OTHER STUFF WOULD FALL OFF AND MAKE THE VEHICLE EVEN MORE UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THEY INDICATED THAT THIS IS ABSOLUTELY EXCESSIVE RUST ON THE FRAME THAT SHOULD NOT HAPPEN. THIS IS REPRODUCIBLE DEMONSTRATING THAT THIS IS THE WAY THAT IT IS DESIGNED AND NOT AN UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE. CHANGING TIRES HELPS SOMEWHAT BUT DOES NOT MITIGATE IT ENTIRELY. I HAVE BROUGHT THE VEHICLE IN MANY TIMES TO TOYOTA UNDER WARRANTY AND NOTHING IS FOUND AND NOTHING IS DONE TO IMPROVE IT. ONLINE HELP DIRECTLY WITH TOYOTA LIKEWISE HAS NOT LEAD TO ANY IMPROVEMENT. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE FOR MANY REASONS INCLUDING DIRECTING THE VEHICLE INTO TRAFFIC AND IT IS VERY DISCONCERTING TO SUDDENLY HAVE THE VEHICLE TAKE CONTROL OF THE STEERING WHEN NEGOTIATING A TURN, PARTICULARLY ON NARROW ROADS OR SHARP TURNS.   • Summary: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 Prius and Corolla, 2009-2011 Venza, 2006-2010 Avalon, 2007-2010 FJ Cruiser, 2005-2011 Sienna and Sequoia, 2006-2011 Tacoma 4x2 and 4x4, Camry, Highlander, Tundra 4x2 and 4x4, and 2007-2011 Rav4 and 4Runner. The affected vehicles may experience compression of the seat cushion which may damage the seat heater wiring.
  • Consequence: Damage to the seat heater wiring could cause the wires to short, increasing the risk of the seat burning and causing personal injury to the occupant.
  • Remedy: SET will notify owners, and dealers will disconnect the heaters with copper strand heating elements and refund the purchase price of the seat heater accessory, free of charge. The recall is expected to began in January 2015. Owners may contact SET customer service at 1-866-405-4226.

  • Summary: Southeast Toyota is recalling certain model year 2008 and 2010-2013 Toyota Tundra, 2010-2012 Rav4, 2012 Toyota Sequoia, 2010-2011 Toyota Corolla, 2010-2011 Toyota Camry and Camry Hybrid, 2010-2013 Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid, 2010-2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser, 2011 Toyota Land Cruiser, 2010-2013 Toyota Venza, 2010-2011 Toyota 4Runner, 2010-2013 Toyota Tacoma, 2011-2012 Toyota Sienna, 2012 Toyota Prius, 2013 Scion FR-S, 2011 Scion XD, 2011 Scion XB, and 2012 Scion TC vehicles. These vehicles were sold with labels that were outside the allowable one percent of accuracy of actual weight added. Thus, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) Number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
  • Consequence: An inaccurate label could lead to owners overloading their vehicles and tires. An overloaded vehicle can result in a tire failure which may result in a vehicle crash, personal injury, or property damage.
  • Remedy: Southeast Toyota will notify owners and provide a corrected label with instructions concerning its installation. A small group of the affected vehicles will need additonal remedies which are still being developed. The recall began on May 28, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.

  • Summary: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain models interspersed through model years 2009 through 2013 as follows: model year 2009-2012 Tacoma, 4Runner, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Prius, and RAV4; model year 2009-2010 Avalon, FJ Cruiser, and Highlander Hybrid; model year 2010-2013 model year Corolla, Sienna and Tundra; model year 2009-2013 Highlander and Venza; model year 2012 Prius V; and model year 2010-2012 Sequoia. During modification by SET to include accessories such as leather seat covers, seat heaters or headrest DVD systems, these vehicles may not have had the passenger seat occupant sensing system calibration tested. Without passing the calibration test, the occupant sensing system may not operate as designed.
  • Consequence: If the front passenger seat occupant sensing system is out of calibration, the front passenger airbags may not deploy or they may deploy inappropriately for the passenger's size and position. This could increase the risk of personal injury during the event of a vehicle crash necessitating airbag deployment.
  • Remedy: Southeast Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will test the sensitivity of the occupant detection sensors, and recalibrate them as necessary. The recall began on March 21, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.

    I have owned six 4Runners over a period of 25 years and have always been happy with them. However, I recently sold my '10 Limited after only five months of ownership because I was disappointed with it. The gas mileage was only 17mpg and the pickup/acceleration was terrible, making it feel underpowered. I found myself needing to downshift constantly just to get up the slightest incline and felt apprehensive entering a highway. I wouldn't even attempt to pass a scooter. If you're only planning to drive it to the local green market, then it might be okay, but otherwise, I would recommend looking at other options.

    This is my third 4Runner 4x4 and I have some concerns about the standard equipment. In my opinion, my 2004 and 2008 SR5 4x4 had better standard features. However, I must say that this vehicle looks great and has that Toyota feel of quality. I was disappointed to find out that it does not come with mud flaps, running boards, cross members on the roof rack, limited slip rear end, and a turn knob to engage the 4-wheel drive. Instead, you need to push a handle to engage it. I understand that this may not be the most convenient feature for everyone, but I still think it's a great vehicle. My wife is not a fan of this feature, but overall, I think it's a good choice.

    I recently sold my 2008 Limited V8,4WD and purchased a 2010 Trail with all the options. Unfortunately, I found the seats to be quite uncomfortable, even my friends complained about them after just a few minutes of riding. I tried using cushions to alleviate the discomfort, but to no avail. I reached out to both the dealership and Toyota HQ to voice my concerns, but unfortunately, after 3 months, customer service informed me that they could not do anything to help. As a long-time Toyota customer, having purchased 5 Toyotas including a Lexus LX470, I was disappointed with this response. Despite this experience, I appreciate the quality of Toyota's previous V8 engine and do not believe the new V6 is a suitable replacement, especially considering there is no MPG advantage. However, I remain hopeful that Toyota will continue to improve their products and customer service in the future.

    Although I have owned five Toyotas, I must say that my experience with this 4Runner has been the worst. Unfortunately, after 110k, the vehicle started to fall apart. The front struts were both leaking, the sunroof stopped working, and rust began to form by the rear Toyota badge and trailer hitch, despite the hitch never being used. Additionally, the radio would stop working at different times for no apparent reason, and the muffler baffle had broken loose inside the muffler. When I first purchased the 4Runner, there was a surfer smell that came into the cab when I accelerated, which may have been a sign of an issue. Lastly, the key fob stopped working. Despite these issues, I still appreciate the vehicle and its potential. I am confident that with proper maintenance and care, it can be restored to its former glory.

    I find the 4runner disappointing due to the hard and cramped seats, the rough ride that transmits every bump on the road, and the abrupt braking. In my opinion, the Pathfinder is a better option and I would recommend it over the 4runner. Additionally, the 3rd row seat is not very spacious and may not be suitable for passengers with long legs.

    I'm a Toyota fan for life! This is my third 4RUNNER, having owned the 2003, 2007, and now the 2010 Limited 4RUNNER. Overall, I'm very satisfied with this one. However, I was surprised to find that some of the basics I expected to be standard are not even available as options. For instance, this is the highest 4Runner I've owned, yet it has no running boards, and there are no wind deflectors available. On the bright side, I absolutely love the adjustable, reclining backs - they're awesome! Additionally, I'm very pleased with all the other perks that come with this model.

    The 4 Runner was delivered the day before the blizzard hit New York. I'm happy to report that all of its features really helped us drive the SUV in the snow. We tested it in various parking lots and found that rear wheel slippage is greatly reduced. My wife loves it, especially how roomy the 1st and 2nd rows are. We've only put 250 miles on it so far and we're averaging 15 MPG, but we're hoping it goes up.

    Out of all the options I considered, the 4Runner was the clear winner. Even though I was initially looking for a Lexus crossover, I stumbled upon this body-on-frame SUV that drives just as smoothly on new roads (no exaggeration) but still feels like a real SUV on bumpy terrain (although I was very impressed that it doesn't bounce like the SR5 - Limited comes with XREAS). With its price and options, the 4Runner was hands down the coolest vehicle in the group and hit a sweet spot. While it's not perfect, it's definitely the best all-around package.

    The new 4Runner looks great with its rugged appearance. The seats and driving position are very comfortable, making for a pleasant ride. It handles very well for an SUV, especially with its tight turning radius. The ride is much smoother than older generations of this vehicle, with minimal wind noise on the highway. The V6 engine is very peppy and responsive, and we're excited to see how fuel-efficient it can be if we don't push it too hard. We can't wait to test out the 4WD system in the Northeastern Ohio snows!

    This truck replaced my '04 Highlander Ltd. I was worried about the gas mileage, but it's almost a tie (19 mpg avg.). The cabin is very well appointed and the seats are incredibly comfortable. The fit and finish are impeccable. My 4Runner LTD Edition is not wallowing excessively at all, as some reviews indicate. While the ride is not as car-like as crossovers, the good old feel of the body on frame is worth the compromise. On the positive side, it glides over New England's potholes with ease without any sign or sound of suspension damage. I hope that this truck will be safe, much more durable than my previous one, and last longer with little maintenance.
