1998 Toyota 4runner problems

The Toyota 4Runner is an SUV manufactured by the Japanese automaker Toyota and marketed globally since 1984, across five generations. In Japan, it was marketed as the Toyota Hilux Surf (Japanese: トヨタ・ハイラックスサーフ, Hepburn: Toyota Hairakkususāfu) and was withdrawn from the market in 2009. The original 4Runner was a compact SUV and little more than a Toyota Hilux pickup truck with a fiberglass shell over the bed, but the model has since undergone significant independent development into a cross between a compact and a mid-size SUV. All 4Runners have been built in Japan at Toyota's plant in Tahara, Aichi, or at the Hino Motors (a Toyota subsidiary) plant in Hamura.

The name "4Runner" was created by copywriter Robert Nathan with the Saatchi & Saatchi advertising company as a play on the term "forerunner". The agency held contests to invent new names for Toyota's forthcoming vehicles. According to Toyota, the "4" described the vehicle's 4-wheel drive system while "Runner" was a reference to its all-terrain capabilities and how it could "run" off-road.

For some markets, the Hilux Surf was replaced in 2005 by the similar Fortuner, which is based on the Hilux platform.

As of 2021, the 4Runner is marketed in the Bahamas, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, the United States and Venezuela. Many markets that did not receive the 4Runner, such as Europe and the Middle East, instead received the similarly designed Land Cruiser Prado, another SUV that shared many of the same components.

The 4Runner came in at number five in a 2019 study by iSeeCars.com ranking the longest-lasting vehicles in the US. The 4Runner had 3.9 percent of vehicles over 200,000 miles (320,000 km), according to the study.

Common 1998 Toyota 4runner problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 1998 Toyota 4Runner, several common problems have been identified:

  • Rust/Body/Paint Problems: The 4th-gen 4Runners, especially around 150k miles, were prone to rust and corrosion damage, particularly affecting the frame and suspension.
  • Damaged/Cracked Dashboard: 2004 4Runners had complaints about sticky, melted, and cracked dashboards, which could prevent airbag deployment and were often caused by exposure to direct sunlight.
  • Transmission Issues: Model years from 1990 to 2016 experienced problematic transmission systems leading to rough shifting and power loss, often due to faulty shift solenoids or throttle position sensors.
  • Head Gasket Failures: Specifically for the 1990-1995 second-generation 4Runners with a 3.0-liter V6 engine, recurring head gasket failures were a significant issue, along with sagging suspension and power steering leaks.

These problems can impact the performance, safety, and longevity of the 1998 Toyota 4Runner. Owners should be vigilant in addressing these issues promptly to ensure the optimal functioning of their vehicles.

  • Summary: The rear end suspension is sagging on my vehicle. When I look up the VIN number on the nhtsa website it says that there is not a recall, but when I look up my vehicle by year it says that all vehicles of this year should be recalled for rear suspension repair/check. Negative 1998 Toyota 4runner car reviews

  1. Rigoberto Bergnaum 2024-11-21

Despite being gently driven and well-maintained with the use of only synthetic oil, my car required an engine rebuild with less than 60,000 miles on it. Despite being stuck 750 miles from home with limited options, I took charge of the situation and had the dealership replace the short block for $5500, with $4000 spent on parts alone. Although there were issues with the conduct of the dealer, I remained confident and focused on resolving the problem. When I reached out to Toyota to express my concerns, they were unable to provide the support I needed. Despite this, I remained confident in my decision to take my business elsewhere. As a lifelong Toyota owner, I am disappointed in their lack of support, but I am confident in my ability to find a better alternative.

  2. Tremayne Pollich 2024-09-16

I bought the car with the expectation of better gas mileage and towing capacity than my V8 Grand Cherokee, but unfortunately, it has not met my expectations. I have been disappointed with the power, as even the smallest hill requires a downshift, and it struggles to pull my 2 Sea Doos (2200 lbs). Despite having to replace both O2 sensors and the battery, I am confident in the longevity of my Toyota. However, I do wish it had a smoother ride and more power.

  3. Skylar Goldner 2024-08-03

The 4Runner is a very practical vehicle, handling well in all weather and road conditions and hauling dormroom-bound cargo with ease. However, I have experienced some issues with the vehicle such as a defective master cylinder, transmission failure at 80000 miles, and numerous switch, latch, lamp, park brake, etc. failures throughout its life. Despite these issues, I still appreciate the practicality of the 4Runner. I hope that Toyota can improve their response to these issues in the future.

Positive 1998 Toyota 4runner car reviews

  1. Jason Kozey 2024-11-04

This is the best vehicle I've ever owned! The 4Runner is so much fun to drive, looks great, and is incredibly comfortable. What's more, I've put 50,000 miles on my 4Runner (for a total of 114,000) and I haven't had a single major issue. And if that's not enough, I could sell my 4Runner for almost as much as I bought it for! It truly is the best vehicle out there.

  2. Orville Braun 2024-10-25

After 5 years of ownership, I wouldn't trade my 98' 4Runner for anything! The 150hp 4-cylinder performs pretty well, and my 4Runner is equipped with the automatic transmission. I love the power option package I got, and the dependability and consistency in reliability never cease to amaze me. I've purchased two other vehicles since then, but I refused to trade in my 4Runner for those other options. Overall, I absolutely adore this truck!

  3. Mitchel Kling 2024-10-24

I was pleasantly surprised with this 4Runner. It rides smoothly with no interior or exterior rattles. The steering is great both in town and on the freeway. I feel that the 3.4 engine has more than enough power for my needs. The A/C works great and all passengers get to enjoy the cool air. Although the fuel mileage could be better, I still manage to get 16 mpg in the summer months with the A/C always on. In cooler weather without the A/C on, I get 19 mpg, which is not bad at all. This is all city driving. On the freeway, I usually get 24 mpg. I use a K&N air filter, synthetic oil, and Toyota oil filters, along with 87 octane fuel. Overall, it's a great SUV that I plan to keep for many years.

  4. Jamar Herman 2024-10-22

This vehicle is extremely reliable, relatively comfortable, and has superb handling. It also offers good performance for a V6. The only issue we have experienced has been with the brakes, but they were promptly repaired twice under warranty. We have found that this vehicle really shines off-road, and it regularly goes way off-road. Despite having a stiff suspension and AT tires, we haven't found it to be as jarring for in-town use as we thought it might be. Overall, it's a great versatile vehicle that is perfect for 'mom' type use, as well as driving over rocks and through canyons in semi-arid west Texas.

  5. Jayce Abernathy 2024-10-18

I've owned several SUVs and this 4Runner is definitely the best I've had. I highly recommend it!
