The Hyundai Accent (Korean: 현대 엑센트), or Hyundai Verna (현대 베르나) is a subcompact car produced by Hyundai. In Australia, the first generation models carried over the Hyundai Excel name used by the Accent's predecessor. The Accent was replaced in 2000 by the Hyundai Verna in South Korea, although most international markets, including the US, retained the "Accent" name. The "Accent" name is an abbreviation of Advanced Compact Car of Epoch-making New Technology.

The Accent is produced for the Chinese market by Beijing Hyundai Co., a joint venture with Beijing Automotive Industry Corp. For the Russian market it was assembled by the TagAZ plant in Taganrog until 2011, and since 2011 it was assembled by the HMMR plant in Saint Petersburg and sold under the new name Hyundai Solaris. In Mexico, the Accent was marketed until 2014 by Chrysler as the Dodge Attitude, previously known as the Verna by Dodge. In Venezuela, Chrysler marketed these models as the Dodge Brisa until 2006. The Brisa was assembled by Mitsubishi Motors at its plant in Barcelona, Venezuela. Since 2002, the Accent had been the longest-running small family car sold in North America. In Puerto Rico, the second and third generations were sold as the Hyundai Brio.

In 2008, Hyundai Accent was named the most dependable subcompact car by J.D. Power and Associates.

Common Hyundai Accent problems

The Hyundai Accent has been a popular choice for car buyers due to its affordability and fuel efficiency. However, like any other vehicle, it has its share of problems. Here are some of the most common issues reported by Hyundai Accent owners, based on the search results:

  • Transmission Failure: Transmission failure is another common problem for the Hyundai Accent, particularly for the 2004 model. Owners of this model reported transmission failure, which required replacement and cost around $2,250.
  • Airbag Issues: The Hyundai Accent has had issues with airbags, including failure to deploy in accidents. For instance, a 2020 model failed to deploy the airbag in a rear-end collision, and a 2014 model had airbag failure that resulted in near-fatal injuries.
  • Faulty Throttle Position Sensor: The throttle position sensor (TPS) is a critical component of the Hyundai Accent's fuel management system. A failing TPS can cause the car to randomly slow down or accelerate, which can be dangerous. One user reported this issue with a 2018 Hyundai Accent, and it is recommended to have a mechanic inspect the vehicle if this issue is suspected.
  • Transmission Shifting Problems: Some Hyundai Accent owners have reported issues with transmission shifting, including difficulty shifting gears and rough shifting. This issue has been reported for various model years, including the 2004 and 2013 models.

In summary, the Hyundai Accent has several common problems, including engine issues, transmission failure, airbag problems, faulty throttle position sensors, and transmission shifting problems. It is essential to be aware of these issues and consider them when purchasing a Hyundai Accent. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or address these problems, ensuring the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

Hyundai Accent 2016
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-02
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-23
  • VIN: KMHCT5AE8GU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: My 2016 Hyundai accent engine has all of sudden stop working and i have explained to multiple shops and my insurance that i was deployed for a whole year and the car was driving fine and once I came back it just wouldn’t crank. Two Hyundai shops informed me that the engine is locked up but neither shop provided a thorough investigation as to why this has happened. There were two-three major hurricanes in Texas where it was stored while I was deployed in Kuwait and Iraq from march 2023- march 2024 as well as another hurricane in Georgia where i am currently located now which happened September 2024. The engine is locked with no explanation as to how and a Hyundai representative by the name of don who provided the goodwill repair on July 09 2024 and i had it towed to Hyundai in Marietta and they looked and provided the same explanation that the engine is locked and to get it replaced with no detailed reasoning why. My safety has been at risk due to driving across states and town to get this vehicle serviced properly and causing mental anguish and depression as I am not able to get to where I need to go everyday which is causing friction in relationship and I am missing important events. I emailed the CEO Randy Parker and his executive assistant Amanda has done nothing but further deny the goodwill with no explanation on how, why, what, when. No, the problem was not confirmed as again it was no detail reasoning behind how the engine locked when it was working fine before returning from overseas. The vehicle was inspected by the local Hyundai dealerships in Killeen Texas and another in Marietta, GA and only inspected by one adjuster recently on October 10, 2024. There was no check engine illuminated in the car once I returned from overseas as it has not been driven much. There is still no check engine light illuminated even after all the shops checking. To make this right, I would like for Hyundai (HMUSA) to honor the goodwill REPAIR and or REPLACEMENT of the engine.

Hyundai Accent 2015
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-05
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-19
  • VIN: KMHCT5AE2FU
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Around the middle of May 2024 I received a recall notice #23V651000. I made an appointment for approximately 2 weeks on June 5. When I arrived I was told the part was never ordered. Coconut Creek Hyundai said they would order the part and call me in a few days. After not hearing for 2 weeks I went back to Hyundai and was told the part hadn’t come in and to go home and they would call me in a few days. After several more weeks I went back and was told the part still hadn’t arrived. It was about a month and a half and still no part. The service manager told me that Hyundai USA was placing a low priority on my model car and manufacturing that part last after all the other models. It’s now 4 months later and I have never received any call from Coconut Creek Hyundai. When this first happened I contacted both Coconut Creek Hyundai and Hyundai USA. Hyundai USA said they couldn’t interfere with the local dealer even though it’s a Federal Safety Recall! Hyundai Coconut Creek basically blew me off. I think this is deliberate on the part of Hyundai USA to service higher cost vehicles before lower cost. They are playing games with my personal safety and that of my car. They are deliberately defying the recall! I believe whatever compliance procedures you have in place should be enforced to the fullest including fines if necessary. Again they are defying the recall and putting my safety and other Accent owners in jeopardy simply for profits.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-05
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: KMHCT4AE1EU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: I was entering highway on entrance ramp there was a loud pop and I could see plumes of smoke coming from under the car, so I turned the ignition off on the car and pulled over to the shoulder, the brakes failed so I had to let it coast to a stop. Then I waited until I could safely exit the vehicle and did so quickly. I had the vehicle towed to a local shop, and they told me I should report it. There was no warning that it was about to happen and yes its available for inspection still sitting at the shop I had it towed to. They also said I should have it towed to the manufacturer service center but this is my first time dealing with anything like this so Im unsure what to do. I did do a cursory inspection under the hood with a mechanic from the shop and there was a burnt wire and a bunch of what looked like oil down at the bottom of the engine, but the oil was still full so I dont think it was oil.

Hyundai Accent 2014
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-07
  • Date Complaint: 2024-08-27
  • VIN: KMHCT4AE2EU
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: There have been 2 recalls in which this vehicle was serviced for within the past year- 1 for undercoating 2 for leaking brake fluid fuse. Neither time were my brake lines inspected for any damage. One month after the fuse was replaced, my brakes went out with the dealership saying the lines were rusted through. Now, we are stuck without a vehicle because there are no brake lines available for this vehicle, everything is on back order with no eta. Had either time this car was serviced for these band aid recalls been looked at, we would not be in the situation we are now. No vehicle, no parts available, a dealership completely unwilling to work with us. Research was done and every vehicle in the 2014 Hyundai class except for the Accents were recalled in Canada for brake lines rusting out after undercoating in Canada. This needs to be looked into because as it stands, our estimate is $2600 to fix an issue that should had been better addressed with these recalls. We were driving back from an outing with our grandchildren when the brakes went completely out with no warning. The brake light did not come when the brakes failed. By the Grace of God we were able to get this car to a Hyundai dealership where it sits today due to poor communication on their part, no parts, and complete frustration on our end.
Hyundai Accent 2016
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-21
  • Date Complaint: 2024-08-21
  • VIN: KMHCT4AE6GU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The instrumental panel suddenly malfunctioned the abs, airbag, and check engine lights illuminated, and the speedometer dropped to zero. The instrumental panel returned to normal, but the mileage range reset to 0. This was while I was traveling on a highway going 70mph. While it did not cause an accident this time, it was very upsetting. Further it is concerning that there was a recall on the 2014 Hyundai Accent for wiring issues that could cause a fire in the engine also referred to as an intermittent. We had the car inspected and nothing was found to be wrong with the battery/alternator or starter and nothing we could do in regular maintenance to ensure the safety of this vehicle. Note the mileage of this vehicle is 108k which is interesting considering the powertrain warranty was for 100k miles.

The ongoing issue has compromised my safety and that of other road users. Confirmation of the Problem: The problem has been confirmed by [Dealership Name/Independent Service Center]. They have verified the engine issue and noted it in their service records. I can provide documentation from this service center upon request. Inspection by Manufacturer or Others: The vehicle has been inspected by [Dealership Name] and Hyundai Motor America (HMA) corporate. The problem was also discussed with Hyundai representatives, including Amanda, who is aware of the issue and the relevant maintenance records. There has been no inspection by police or insurance representatives related to this specific issue. Warning Lamps, Messages, or Symptoms: Prior to the engine failure, there were several warning lamps and messages indicating engine problems. These symptoms first appeared on [Date of First Warning], giving preliminary notice of the impending failure. Despite these warnings, the necessary repairs or goodwill intervention were not provided. Given the seriousness of the situation and the impact on my daily life, including the necessity to use rental cars, take time off work, and travel extensively, I request the following: Immediate Approval of Goodwill Repair: Reassess and approve the goodwill repair for the engine issue based on the accurate maintenance records provided. Compensation for Inconvenience: Compensation for time off work, rental car costs, travel expenses, and emotional distress caused by this situation.

Point a to point b... That's it. I've owned this car since it first hit the market and I haven't had any problems with maintenance. The interior could be a little softer and the size is a bit of a challenge. I don't think tall people are supposed to drive it, but it does have good mileage. Unfortunately, there's no back seat space and barely any trunk space.

If you are considering purchasing a vehicle like this from a dealer, it is important to obtain absolute proof of prior maintenance records. Unfortunately, I had a negative experience with a local dealer who claimed that the vehicle had a lifetime power train warranty, which turned out to be untrue. After purchasing the vehicle for around $8,000.00, I had to invest an additional $400.00 to replace the flex pipe not too long after. Three days after purchase, I discovered valve train noise that started when the vehicle was cold and would end when the engine warmed. A week ago, the timing belt went and I cannot afford the repairs. It is important to note that the value of this vehicle has significantly dropped, with KBB valuing the car in running condition at around $3000.00. I have owned this vehicle for eight months and still owe over $7000.00 on it. Currently, the car is sitting in my garage and I am doing the repairs myself. If you are interested in purchasing a vehicle like this, please be aware of the potential risks and make sure that everything is taken care of (maintenance wise) before paying what a dealer is asking. Review Update 5/18/16: As of this date, the vehicle is sitting in my garage with clutch issues. Price estimates for this repair range between $700.00-$900.00 not including flywheel replacement if necessary. I am definitely not a fan of this vehicle! I believe a used car from Craigslist would have been a better deal. At least it would have been paid off. Review Update 11/18/16: This vehicle has developed rust issues on rear quarter panels around wheel openings. Review Update 05/19/2017: The vehicle has developed a front end vibration that appears to be a strut issue. The vehicle also appears to be consuming oil at a quicker rate than before. The rust issue is increasing on the right rear quarter panel.

It's been 5 years since I got this car, although I had to spend two of those years away at college without it. During this time, I've driven it for about 60,000 miles. I must say, I really loved this car. Even when the engine misfired for the first time, I wasn't too worried because it had been such a reliable car until then. Unfortunately, things started to go downhill from there. The engine misfired twice and needed to be fixed, and the brakes had to be replaced four times. There was also an issue with a valve near the transmission that caused oil to leak down into the clutch, which required a full clutch kit replacement and parts of the transmission to be replaced. That was less than four months ago. Last week, the timing belt broke without any warning and bent the entire motor, which means I will have spent over $4,000 on repairs for this car. Despite all of this, I still have fond memories of my time with this car.

The car was initially fine, but when I started commuting 80 miles a day on the highway, I began to experience some trouble. Unfortunately, the car lost control frequently, even at slow speeds. Additionally, parts were expensive and only available through Hyundai. As the miles added up, the car began to run poorly. The final straw was a minor repair that cost $200. The nearest dealership was an hour away, and I was without my car for three days because closer ones were uninterested and normal repair shops wouldn't do the work. It's worth noting that the issue wasn't covered under warranty, and initially, they blamed the place where I had my oil changes done until someone from there called them. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for!

I bought my '04 Accent last November. It's a pretty basic car - manual transmission, no AC, power locks, power windows or cruise - but it gets great gas mileage, around 30-35mpg in mixed driving, and is surprisingly good in the snow. I purchased it for $4k, so for my daily commute, it's a great deal. I do miss the AC, but since I never travel long distances in it, it's not a big deal. I would definitely recommend the Accent to anyone needing reliable transportation.

Hi there! I've been driving my Accent L for over 6 years now and I'm about to hit 39K miles. I'm happy to say that I haven't had to spend any extra money on this car besides regular maintenance. The only mechanical issues I've had were a leaky valve cover gasket and occasionally getting a P0200 code for a misfire on colder mornings, but it always corrects itself quickly. As for the interior, I've had to replace the shifter boot three times and the fresh air/recirculating air level cable has bound up on me twice. But overall, this car has been a champ! It's started up without any issues even in -27 degree weather and has handled near 100 degree heat with ease. On long highway trips, I've even hit 48-50 MPG! Thanks for listening to my story.

Hey there! I noticed that this is your second Hyundai Accent, that's great! I'm glad to hear that you find them to be a cost-effective option that uses less gas than many other cars out there. It's impressive that your first one lasted you 14 years!

Congratulations on your purchase of a 2013 Accent Sedan! It's great to hear that you've had such a positive experience with it, driving 116,000 miles in three years without any problems. Your road trip from Florida to New York with a fully loaded car and still getting 42 mpg on the highway is impressive! Coasting down hills to get up to 51 mpg is a clever trick. It's wonderful to hear that you've just purchased a 2016 model, which comes with stability control and anti-lock braking. While the fabric on the seats may stain easily, it's good to know that the car is comfortable on long rides. Although there is no rearview camera, it's still a great car overall. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

I purchased this car in December 2014 with 157,000 km on the odometer. After owning it for 5 months and driving it for 20,000 km, I decided to sell it because I was leaving the province and the country. During the last 5 months of ownership, I had to replace the wheel bearings and wiper assembly, but given the car's age, it seemed like a reasonable expense. Despite the cold and snowy conditions in Montreal, the car started and drove fine. I did have to spend some money on minor repairs, as one would expect with any used car. The car is nice and light, making it fun to drive, and I found the interior comfortable enough to drive long distances without feeling sore. Additionally, there was no excessive road noise or vibrations.
