The Hyundai Accent (Korean: 현대 엑센트), or Hyundai Verna (현대 베르나) is a subcompact car produced by Hyundai. In Australia, the first generation models carried over the Hyundai Excel name used by the Accent's predecessor. The Accent was replaced in 2000 by the Hyundai Verna in South Korea, although most international markets, including the US, retained the "Accent" name. The "Accent" name is an abbreviation of Advanced Compact Car of Epoch-making New Technology.
The Accent is produced for the Chinese market by Beijing Hyundai Co., a joint venture with Beijing Automotive Industry Corp. For the Russian market it was assembled by the TagAZ plant in Taganrog until 2011, and since 2011 it was assembled by the HMMR plant in Saint Petersburg and sold under the new name Hyundai Solaris. In Mexico, the Accent was marketed until 2014 by Chrysler as the Dodge Attitude, previously known as the Verna by Dodge. In Venezuela, Chrysler marketed these models as the Dodge Brisa until 2006. The Brisa was assembled by Mitsubishi Motors at its plant in Barcelona, Venezuela. Since 2002, the Accent had been the longest-running small family car sold in North America. In Puerto Rico, the second and third generations were sold as the Hyundai Brio.
In 2008, Hyundai Accent was named the most dependable subcompact car by J.D. Power and Associates.

- Summary: The system that malfunctioned was the brake light(s) and/or electrical components which started a fire in the trunk of my car on 2 separate occasions. On one of the occasions, the top break light in my trunk apparently blew out without my knowledge, it wasn't until my two kids in the backseat started to smell smoke that I pulled over and tried to figure out where the smoke was coming from. When I opened my trunk, I noticed the top break light had burned through the encasement and the wiring was dangling in my trunk which caught a plastic bag on fire. On another occasion, it burned part of a brand-new rug before I caught it in time. I was told by two separate auto mechanics that for some reason the electrical current running through the wiring to the light bulbs is what caused it. When I brought it into Hyundai, they acted like it was no big deal. I recently got my oil changed at Valvoline this past week and they found another one of my brake lights had blown out (this time the right brake light), the auto mechanic at Valvoline told me that she has encountered a lot of blown-out lights in Hyundais versus other vehicle manufacturers and stated she believes it has something to do with the electrical components of the vehicle and an excess amount of electricity going through the electrical wiring to the light bulbs. My vehicle can be made available for inspection but it’s my fault for when I brought it in originally to Hyundai not to ask for the broken/melted pieces that they replaced. I do have the rug which was partially burned but do not have the plastic bag that was burned. Both my kids under 10 and myself were put at risk during these episodes. If I didn’t catch it in time on both occasions, my kids could've been severally injured by fire since they were closest to the trunk. It posed a distraction as well. The problem was confirmed by the Hyundai dealership in Winter Park, FL when I brought it in. There were no warnings, only noticed when we smelled smoke.

- Summary: My 17 yr old son was driving his 2018 Hyundai Accent home from work, and was merging onto the freeway and when he realized the cars in front of him dead stopped he slammed his brakes but was unable to stop in time. Happens all the time right? It should just have a little front end damage, when the vehicle in front of him only had minor bumper damage. But, instead, within just moments, his vehicle burst into flames and he only had seconds to react. He grabbed his phone and wallet and had to exit through the passenger door because he was on the freeway and needed to get to safety. His car was completely engulfed in flames and burnt the entire car. He was very close to being either badly burned or killed, if he hadn’t acted as smart and quick as he did. What if this car was carrying a family with small children, or an elderly person who couldn’t move fast or react like my son did. It could have been a much, much worse situation. I just don’t want this to happen to anyone else. We, along with everyone else at the scene, including CHP and friends who are mechanics, believed this fire should not have happened, and we all feel like something must have been wrong with his vehicle for this fire to have happened. We just purchased this vehicle in Sept of 2021 from Mission Bay Chevrolet, we had only made 2 payments at the time of the accident. We have seen far worse accident and far worse front end damage on other vehicles and these car did not catch on fire. Cars aren’t supposed to catch on fire in an accident if this nature, this should not have happened, and we really want some answers as to why? Thank you for your time!

As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 401, "Internal Trunk Release."
- Consequence: A person inside the trunk compartment may become trapped, increasing their risk of injury.
- Remedy: Dealers will replace the trunk latch base, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 4, 2021. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 208.

This Accent is a reliable and economical car that rides well. The shifter is a plus, as it is easy to up or downshift without looking, and the audio and temperature controls are easy to use. The only downsides are that a few extra inches of height would make access easier and the trunk bigger. Additionally, the cruise control can be a bit annoying as it downshifts when coasting downhill, but this can be easily remedied by manually locking in 6th gear. In combined driving, I'm getting about 45 mpg in the winter and 50 mpg in the summer. It's important to note that the in-dash display reads about 10% higher and cannot be recalibrated. Overall, this is a great car that I would highly recommend!

I purchased my wife's 2018 Accent SE in 2019. Although it was a rental car with 16,000 miles, it looked very clean and was only $12,200 out the door. We have now driven 45,000 miles without any issues and are about to pay it off. This little car handles, accelerates, and brakes better than any other subcompact at this price point. On trips, I have gotten as much as 43 mpg with the Accent. When I was looking for a car for my business, I considered many different vehicles, but the Accent won the decision again. The 2021 Accent SE was only $16,150 out the door, and you cannot find a new car this good for that price anywhere else.

I'm glad to hear that you have had such a positive experience with your 2018 car! It's great to know that you have driven 44,000 miles without any issues and that the original brakes are still working well. Your fuel efficiency of 36 mpg in town and 44 mpg on the highway is impressive. The engineers have done a great job in tweaking the 1.6 naturally aspirated engine to provide low end torque, which results in decent acceleration from a start. The cargo space is surprisingly good, especially with the rear seats down. I'm pleased to hear that the handling is much better than expected. Although the ride can be a bit busy on rough potholed roads, the light color upholstery looks richer than the more monotone black/grey. Overall, this economy car is a great value!

Hello! In 2019, my husband and I bought a 2018 Hyundai Accent with 32,000 miles on it. We've been driving it for almost a year and a half now and it has 77,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, within the first two weeks of getting the car, the front left bumper popped out of place. We've had the clip replaced three times now, but it keeps popping out after a few days. Lately, we've been having some trouble with the A/C flickering off and on while we're driving or even when the car is idling with the air on. We do wish we had been able to get an Elantra because we could use a bit more space, but overall, this car would be perfect for a single parent, a younger driver, or an older person. It's not really a family car, but it does have a little bit of get up and go as long as you don't turn the AC past 2. Thanks for reading!

I was shopping for an Elantra, but I found that the Accent Limited had a catchy new style and lots of equipment. I already have an Elantra SE that is well-equipped, but it doesn't offer everything that the Accent Limited does. I think the sport mode is particularly nice on the highway when you're in manual shift due to stop-and-go heavy traffic. The electric shift 6-speed is actually in a manual mode, so be sure to watch and upshift manually. The Limited came with high-quality, low-profile tires and large rims, which gives it a nice stance and good handling. If you don't have extra funds to purchase wheel locks, see if you can finance them as a dealer add-on. You can feel comfortable inside, as it is larger than the previous Accent models I test drove. If you like gadgets, this is the car for you.
