The Hyundai Accent (Korean: 현대 엑센트), or Hyundai Verna (현대 베르나) is a subcompact car produced by Hyundai. In Australia, the first generation models carried over the Hyundai Excel name used by the Accent's predecessor. The Accent was replaced in 2000 by the Hyundai Verna in South Korea, although most international markets, including the US, retained the "Accent" name. The "Accent" name is an abbreviation of Advanced Compact Car of Epoch-making New Technology.

The Accent is produced for the Chinese market by Beijing Hyundai Co., a joint venture with Beijing Automotive Industry Corp. For the Russian market it was assembled by the TagAZ plant in Taganrog until 2011, and since 2011 it was assembled by the HMMR plant in Saint Petersburg and sold under the new name Hyundai Solaris. In Mexico, the Accent was marketed until 2014 by Chrysler as the Dodge Attitude, previously known as the Verna by Dodge. In Venezuela, Chrysler marketed these models as the Dodge Brisa until 2006. The Brisa was assembled by Mitsubishi Motors at its plant in Barcelona, Venezuela. Since 2002, the Accent had been the longest-running small family car sold in North America. In Puerto Rico, the second and third generations were sold as the Hyundai Brio.

In 2008, Hyundai Accent was named the most dependable subcompact car by J.D. Power and Associates.

Common 2008 Hyundai Accent problems

The Hyundai Accent, a popular subcompact car, has its share of common problems that have been reported by owners over the years. This article will discuss two of the most commonly reported issues: airbag problems and transmission failure.

Airbag problems are a significant concern for the Hyundai Accent, with numerous complaints about airbags failing to deploy during accidents. The most recent complaint in CarProblemZoo involved a 2020 Hyundai Accent that got rear-ended on a freeway near Dallas, Texas. The impact pushed the vehicle towards the guard rail on the right side of the freeway, but the airbag failed to deploy. Another user on the site complained about a 2014 Hyundai Accent on behalf of a contact who sustained near-fatal injuries as a result of airbag failure. There are 119 complaints dating as far back as the 2004 model. Hyundai has issued a recall for 2015 Accents manufactured between September 15, 2014, and February 10, 2015. At extremely low temperatures, the occupant detection system (ODS) may be unable to detect the presence of a child restraint seat in the front passenger seat, resulting in front airbag failure. Affected models will receive an ODS software update, free of charge. If you suspect an issue with your Accent’s airbag system, don’t hesitate to call your trusted mechanic and have him inspect your vehicle.

Transmission failure is another common problem reported by Hyundai Accent owners, particularly in the 2004 model. One user complained about transmission failure in their vehicle. If you experience gear shifting problems, it is essential to have your vehicle inspected by a professional mechanic to determine the cause and prevent further damage.

In addition to these common problems, the Hyundai Accent may also experience issues with its electronics, such as the throttle position sensor (TPS) failing, causing the car to speed up and slow down on its own. If your Hyundai Accent randomly slows down or accelerates, you should ask your mechanic to take a look at your TPS.

The Hyundai Accent is a decent subcompact car in most respects, but it’s far from perfect. It has its share of problems, including airbag issues and transmission failure. If you own a Hyundai Accent, it is essential to stay up-to-date with recalls and have your vehicle inspected regularly to prevent and address any potential issues.

2008 Hyundai Accent recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2008 Hyundai Accent.

2013-04-01
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
  • Summary: Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
  • Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.

Negative 2008 Hyundai Accent car reviews

  1. Preston Maggio 2024-11-11

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the 2008 Hyundai Accent that was purchased from Palmer's Airport Hyundai. The car has had multiple issues, including a faulty seat belt, brake failure, and transmission problems. Despite repairs and replacements, the issues persisted and caused significant inconvenience and even job loss. I believe that the dealership should take responsibility for these issues and provide appropriate compensation. As a loyal customer, I expect Hyundai to uphold its reputation for quality and reliability. Thank you for your attention to this matter. In 2010, I experienced multiple issues with my car, including transmission failure and brake troubles. Despite taking it to Palmer's Airport Hyundai, the dealership that had previously replaced my transmission, they reported that nothing was wrong with the car. However, I knew something was off when I found a food receipt that did not belong to me or anyone I knew, and my gas tank was nearly empty. I later discovered that the mechanics had rewired my AC unit, causing hot and cold air to be reversed. Even after replacing the brakes and tires at Firestone, the car still did not stop properly. I also noticed that the emergency brake no longer required the release button. When I took the car back to Palmer's, they finally discovered a cylinder misfire and a busted gasket that took nearly four weeks to repair, despite initially promising a one-week turnaround. Despite these challenges, I remained persistent in seeking a resolution for my car troubles. In November 2011, my stepfather signed the car over to me. Since then, I have taken the car for several check-ups at Palmer's Airport Hyundai due to various issues, including a fluid leak. Despite their assurances that there were no problems with the car, I have experienced rattling and high-pitched noises that are not normal for my vehicle. I am extremely dissatisfied with the service provided by the dealership and the failure of their certified technicians. I would appreciate some form of compensation or alternative solution from Hyundai. Thank you. They will not charge me $100 for junk they will mess up again.

  2. Arnoldo Pagac 2024-05-06

I have owned my Hyundai for two years now and unfortunately, I have experienced several issues. The starter, both windows, and the hatch have malfunctioned, the throw out bearing and clutch have failed, the weather stripping has deteriorated, the paint has blistered in multiple areas, and the fabric on both front seats has torn. Despite these challenges, I have taken it upon myself to fix and replace these components as Hyundai's warranties have not been helpful. It is disappointing that Hyundai does not stand by their products, but I have learned from this experience and will not be purchasing another Hyundai in the future.

  3. Bernardo Howe 2024-02-24

I have owned my Hyundai Accent SE for less than two months and it has already been at the dealer twice for rattles from either the rear suspension of the hatch. Despite taking it to a body shop, the issue remains unresolved. As a daily driver covering 80 miles, the noise is extremely bothersome. I expect the dealer to resolve this issue promptly and to my satisfaction.

Positive 2008 Hyundai Accent car reviews

  1. Neil Sawayn 2024-10-12

I rated this car first of all after being very frustrated. The rattle is not fixed yet, but after having to take a 2600 mile trip, thank goodness for XM. The gas mileage was awesome, I, at one point, got over 400 miles on one tank, of course, filled to the brim. Comfort was awesome, even without cruise, but it hung with the big boys on the highway and in the mountains. I retract my first review.

  2. Hudson Kohler 2024-10-11

I'm glad to hear that you did your research and found the Accent to be the best value for your money. It sounds like you got a great deal on the SE model with all the options you wanted, including a sunroof and body kit. While you would have preferred a 5M to save some money, it's great to hear that the Accent still met your needs for an economy car with great looks and options. With DC traffic, it's impressive that you're averaging 30mpg, with a low of 27 and high of 35. Keep up the good work!

  3. Philip Bailey 2024-10-02

I drive about 70 miles per day to work and back, and my 90 Montero had over 200K, so I went for it. I am so happy with it, no complaints whatsoever! I am averaging 37-38 MPG on every tank. I am a consistent, conservative driver who has kept a record of every drop of gasoline since 1959 that I have bought. Nothing has ever compared to this car mileage wise, and it is surprisingly fun to drive as well. With a price of $10,000 including A/C, I highly recommend it to anyone who needs fuel economy combined with a high quality vehicle (10 yr/100K warranty thrown in) that is fun to drive. I normally keep them until they die, and hope to have this one at least 10 years. Go see your Hyundai dealer now!

  4. Antwan Abshire 2024-09-21

I love this car! I was just window shopping, but I couldn't resist. It's a small silver car with a sunroof and all the features I was looking for. Everyone says it's fun to drive, and I can't wait to take it for a spin. I didn't even bother looking at other small cars, this was the one for me!
