The Hyundai Accent (Korean: 현대 엑센트), or Hyundai Verna (현대 베르나) is a subcompact car produced by Hyundai. In Australia, the first generation models carried over the Hyundai Excel name used by the Accent's predecessor. The Accent was replaced in 2000 by the Hyundai Verna in South Korea, although most international markets, including the US, retained the "Accent" name. The "Accent" name is an abbreviation of Advanced Compact Car of Epoch-making New Technology.

The Accent is produced for the Chinese market by Beijing Hyundai Co., a joint venture with Beijing Automotive Industry Corp. For the Russian market it was assembled by the TagAZ plant in Taganrog until 2011, and since 2011 it was assembled by the HMMR plant in Saint Petersburg and sold under the new name Hyundai Solaris. In Mexico, the Accent was marketed until 2014 by Chrysler as the Dodge Attitude, previously known as the Verna by Dodge. In Venezuela, Chrysler marketed these models as the Dodge Brisa until 2006. The Brisa was assembled by Mitsubishi Motors at its plant in Barcelona, Venezuela. Since 2002, the Accent had been the longest-running small family car sold in North America. In Puerto Rico, the second and third generations were sold as the Hyundai Brio.

In 2008, Hyundai Accent was named the most dependable subcompact car by J.D. Power and Associates.

THIS CAUSES FINANCIAL HARDSHIP AS WELL AS A SAFETY RISK AS SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER CAN LEAD TO ACCIDENTS AND UNSAFE LOW SPEEDS. PLEASE ISSUE A RECALL AS THIS MOST OF THE COMPLAINTS TO THE NHTSA ABOUT THIS VEHICLE HAVE TO DO WITH THIS IGNITION COIL ISSUE.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-08-12
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: IT ALL BEGAN IN JANUARY WHEN I HAD TO HAVE ALL FOUR COILS REPLACED. SUDDENLY FOR THE PAST FEW MONTHS MY CAR BEGAN BUMPING IN IDLE, OR NOT ACCELERATING FAST ENOUGH. THOUGHT IT WAS THE AC SINCE IT'S BEEN SO HOT LATELY. TOOK IT TO HYUNDAI DEALER, THEY HAD NO IDEA WHAT WAS GOING ON (DIDN'T STOP THEM FROM TACKING ON 5 DIFF SERVICE RECOMMENDATIONS WHICH HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE PROBLEM). NOW I'M HAVING RANDOM FALSE STARTING ISSUES. SOMETIMES MY CAR STARTS, SOMETIMES IT DOESN'T. HAD AUTOZONE CHECK BATTERY, THEY SUGGESTED I CHANGE BATTERY. BUT I TOOK MY CAR TO A MECHANIC. AS I WAITED FOR AN ORDERED BATTERY, HAD STARTUP ISSUES AGAIN AT WORK. TOOK IT INTO MECHANIC TODAY TO GET MORE IN-DEPTH INSPECTION AND THEY NOTED A ENGINE FALSE-START FLAG FROM HYUNDAI, SAID I SHOULD GO TO DEALER AGAIN. LOOKED ONLINE AND SAW WARNINGS OF RANGE SWITCH/SHIFT INTERLOCK PROBLEMS AND COMPLAINTS FROM LOTS OF 2011-2013 HYUNDAI OWNERS! PLEASE MAKE THIS A RECALL OR AT LEAST SPREAD AWARENESS TO ALL HYUNDAI DEALERS! I LOOK FORWARD TO PAYING MY CAR OFF SO I CAN SELL IT AND GET A CAR THAT WORKS!

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-04-15
  • VIN: KMHCM3AC6BU
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: I BROUGHT MY CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP AT 33000 MILES WHEN IT WAS BUCKING AND HESITATING WHEN I ACCELERATED. THE MECHANIC COULD NOT DETECT A CODE AND TOLD ME TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE UNTIL THE PART COMPLETELY BROKE DOWN AND A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THE CAR SOON WOULD NOT ACCELERATE PAST 25 MPH AND WAS BUCKING UP AND DOWN LIKE A PING PONG BALL. I CRAWLED INTO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD I NEEDED AN IGNITION COIL REPLACED. I WAS ALSO TOLD THE OTHER COILS WOULD PROBABLY GO BAD ONE BY ONE, BUT I COULDN'T HAVE THEM ALL REPLACED UNDER THE WARRANTY AT ONE TIME UNTIL THEY MALFUNCTIONED. I WAS VERY NERVOUS DRIVING THE CAR UNTIL IN DECEMBER 2014 ANOTHER COIL STARTED OCCASIONALLY TO ACT UP. ON SOME DAYS THE CAR WILL BUCK AND HESITATE FOR A FEW MINUTES, BUT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WILL NOT COME ON, SO WHEN I BRING THE CAR IN TO THE DEALERSHIP, THEY CANNOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG AND THE PROBLEM CANNOT BE DUPLICATED. ON OTHER DAYS THE PROBLEM IS VERY MILD AND ONLY FOR A FEW SECONDS AND STILL THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DOES NOT COME ON. WHEN I HAD THE PROBLEM SEVERELY ONE DAY, I DROVE TO ANOTHER MECHANIC IN A CHAIN REPAIR FACILITY AND THEY PUT THE CAR ON A MASTER COMPUTER WHICH DETECTED A PROBLEM IN THE #4 IGNITION COIL. THEY SUGGESTED I RACE OVER TO THE DEALERSHIP TO SEE IF THEY COULD CATCH THE PROBLEM ALSO ON THEIR MASTER COMPUTER, BUT THEY COULD NOT DETECT ANYTHING. I WANT THE #4 IGNITION COIL REPLACED UNDER THE WARRANTY BECAUSE I AM A SENIOR CITIZEN AND AM VERY NERVOUS DRIVING MY CAR AROUND IN THIS BROKEN CONDITION. THE MAIN PROBLEM IS THAT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DOES NOT COME ON AND THERE IS NO CODE STORED. MY DAUGHTER HAS THE SAME PROBLEM WITH HER 2011 HYUNDAI ACCENT. I HESITATE DRIVING MY CAR THE HOUR TO VISIT MY SON FOR FEAR I WILL SUDDENLY NEED A TOW IN AN UNFAMILIAR NEIGHBORHOOD. THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS HERE FOR THIS SAME PROBLEM WARRANTS A RECALL. *TR

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-08-07
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I HADN'T HAD THIS CAR FOR SIX MONTHS BEFORE TWO COILS WENT BAD. THE TWO COILS WERE REPLACED BY THE DEALER, AND WITHIN THE NEXT THREE MONTHS THE OTHER TWO WENT. I HAD TO END OF PAYING A MECHANIC SHOP MYSELF TO REPLACE THE REMAINING TWO COILS DUE TO THE WARRANTY EXPIRING. THIS CAR IS ONLY A 2011 AND I DON'T FEEL THOSE PARTS SHOULD HAVE HAD TO BE REPLACED SO SOON. THERE SHOULD DEFINITELY BE A RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE. *TR

2011 Hyundai Accent recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2011 Hyundai Accent.

2015-09-08
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor America
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
  • Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2009-2011 Hyundai Accent vehicles manufactured March 1, 2009, to February 11, 2011. In the affected vehicles, the brake light switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning brake light switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning brake light switch may also prevent the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position.
  • Consequence: Failure to illuminate the brake lights during braking or the inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake switch, free of charge. The recall began on October 21, 2015. Owners may contact Hyundai's customer service at 1-855-671-3059 or by visiting www.HyundaiUSA.com/Campaign131. Hyundai's number for this recall is 131. This recall is an expansion of 13V-113.

Negative 2011 Hyundai Accent car reviews

  1. Grayson Cole 2024-11-25

I've had the pleasure of owning a variety of cars, including F-150's, Hummer H2's, Ford Explorers, Audi's, and currently, two Mercedes Benz. While they are great cars, they can be a bit of a gas guzzler. My first Accent was a company car with 87k miles. It was a comfortable car, great on gas, and fun to drive, but it was severely under-powered. The auto transmission could be a bit sloppy at times and made some hard shifts, and unfortunately, cruise control wasn't available. However, despite these minor flaws, I found it to be the perfect commuter car for both myself and my son. He can drive to school and work, and I can run errands with ease. I must say, I absolutely love this car!

  2. Hazle Runolfsdottir 2024-10-28

Hi there! I noticed that you mentioned your car's gas mileage isn't quite what the sticker promised. From what you've described, it sounds like you're getting around 30 to 32 mpg while driving at the speed limit of 55 to 65 mph on the highway. That's still pretty good, but I understand it can be frustrating when the sticker doesn't match up with reality. Is there anything else you've noticed about your car's performance that you'd like to share?

  3. Floy Lindgren 2024-07-01

I have a GS with 2500 miles on it. I have the ABS/power package. It is a fun little car to drive, peppier than I thought it would be. I avg 31 mi/gal. The only problem is that the passenger air bag intermittently does not recognize the passenger. The dealership does not seem to be able to find the problem.

  4. Felipe Krajcik 2024-06-19

The 2011 Hyundai Accent SE 4-speed automatic with 61,000 KM is a fantastic car. It boasts a sunroof, fog lights, and 16-inch alloy wheels, making it sporty and stylish. The car is comfortable, fuel-efficient, and handles exceptionally well. Although there have been some suspension issues, such as having to replace two struts in the back and a clunking sway bar link kit in the front, these problems are covered under warranty. The only downside is that the plastic interior scratches easily. Overall, I highly recommend this car to buyers.

  5. Emmitt Brown 2024-06-14

The 2010 model year was the last to use a 4-speed automatic transmission, which some drivers found to be clunky and not ideal for highway driving. Additionally, the lack of cruise control was a bit of a nightmare. However, the car itself is quite solid and handles bumps well. It's also proven to be reliable and inexpensive to own. As the first owner, I've put about 65k miles on it and it's still going strong. Even now, at nearly 100k miles, it's still impressively reliable and fuel-efficient. There have been some cosmetic issues, such as the fiberglass body component on the back of the car losing its clear coat, but overall the finish is still good. There have also been some minor mechanical issues, such as a rotted exhaust pipe and worn struts causing some noise in the front suspension. However, despite these issues, I remain impressed with the car's performance and reliability.

Positive 2011 Hyundai Accent car reviews

  1. Terrell Green 2025-01-04

The Accent is a great car that I highly recommend. Despite some minor downsides, it has been a reliable and efficient vehicle for me. I purchased mine in 2012 with 35k miles on it and have had no major issues aside from the power coils going out, which were covered under warranty. The fuel efficiency is impressive and the car feels roomy despite its small size. I have even traveled with three other people who are roughly my same size and they all found it comfortable. While the acceleration could be better, it is still a great car for city driving and parking. Overall, I am confident in recommending the Accent to anyone on a budget who wants a reliable and efficient car.

  2. Demario Carroll 2024-11-27

Bought for work, and it has never let me down. It even handles well in the snow!

  3. Ruben Swaniawski 2024-11-26

I recently purchased this car as my primary commute vehicle and I must say, I am loving it so far! I was able to get an amazing deal on it and it is built to last. The car is much better than my previous 2006 Civic, which felt like a tin can compared to this tank! It is solid, drives well, and is quite peppy, especially since I have the manual and it is a gas-sipper. Even at 6'1 tall, I find it quite comfortable and cute. I am looking forward to driving this car for over 100,000 miles! With gas prices on the rise, this car is a great investment. Hyundai really hit the mark with this one, from the warranty to the cost, mileage, and build quality.

  4. Buck Robel 2024-11-18

This is my first NEW car and I'm 51 years old. I was so excited to finally get it! It cost me $8,900, which is a great price, and it comes with an amazing warranty. Plus, it's so much fun to drive!

The warranty and 'return if you lose your job or too sick to work' (up to 1 year) made this purchase a great deal. We test drove 2 at different dealerships and didn't hesitate on buying this. We got the 5 speed manual after reading many reviews. We drove it in the city and on the freeway, and it handled beautifully.
