The Hyundai Accent (Korean: 현대 엑센트), or Hyundai Verna (현대 베르나) is a subcompact car produced by Hyundai. In Australia, the first generation models carried over the Hyundai Excel name used by the Accent's predecessor. The Accent was replaced in 2000 by the Hyundai Verna in South Korea, although most international markets, including the US, retained the "Accent" name. The "Accent" name is an abbreviation of Advanced Compact Car of Epoch-making New Technology.

The Accent is produced for the Chinese market by Beijing Hyundai Co., a joint venture with Beijing Automotive Industry Corp. For the Russian market it was assembled by the TagAZ plant in Taganrog until 2011, and since 2011 it was assembled by the HMMR plant in Saint Petersburg and sold under the new name Hyundai Solaris. In Mexico, the Accent was marketed until 2014 by Chrysler as the Dodge Attitude, previously known as the Verna by Dodge. In Venezuela, Chrysler marketed these models as the Dodge Brisa until 2006. The Brisa was assembled by Mitsubishi Motors at its plant in Barcelona, Venezuela. Since 2002, the Accent had been the longest-running small family car sold in North America. In Puerto Rico, the second and third generations were sold as the Hyundai Brio.

In 2008, Hyundai Accent was named the most dependable subcompact car by J.D. Power and Associates.

  • Summary: THE PASSENGER SEATBELT AIRBAG SENSOR WIRE WAS CAUGHT AND CUT IN NORMAL USE OF THE CAR, WHILE IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY. WHEN I BROUGHT IT IN, THEY SAID THAT IT WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY, AND SO WE HAVE TAKEN IT TO A 3RD PARTY MECHANIC TO FIX IT. WHEN HE ORDERED THE REPLACEMENT PART THROUGH HYUNDAI, THE REPLACEMENT PART HAS ALTERATIONS WHICH FIX THE PROBLEM THAT CAUSED THE ISSUE. SO THEY KNOW ABOUT THE PROBLEM BUT WON'T FIX IT. WHEN IT IS BROKEN THE CAR DOESN'T KNOW THAT THERE IS A PASSENGER IN THE CAR AND SO THE AIRBAG WOULD NEVER GO OFF.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-03-23
  • VIN: KMHCG45C63U
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: MY CAR WAS DRIVEN UNDER 70,000 MILES WHEN MY TRANSMISSION STARTED GOING OUT. I WAS IN THE CAR WITH MY ONE YEAR OLD NIECE AT THE TIME LEAVING TO GO HOME. MY CAR STARTED VIOLENTLY THRUSTING FORWARD WITH ALL OF US IN THE CAR AND WAS JERKING VIOLENTLY. I THOUGHT WE WERE GOING TO GET IN AN ACCIDENT WITH THE CHILD IN THE CAR IN MARCH 2006. AS WE PULLED ON THE FREEWAY THE CAR DID THE SAME THING FOR THE FIRST 10 MILES AND WE WERE SURE WE WERE GOING TO DIE. BUT I PULLED OFF THE ROAD AND LET IT COOL DOWN. WHEN WE ARRIVED AT MY PARENTS WE SERVICED THE VEHICLE WHICH I THINK HAD TO BE TOWED AND I WAS GIVEN A REFURBISHED TRANSMISSION IN MARCH 2006. DURING THE FALL OF 2007 THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED AND THE GEARS WERE ACTING UP AS THEY WERE BEFORE AND THE CAR WAS VIOLENTLY THRUSTING FORWARD AND JERKING. I ALMOST GOT INTO AN ACCIDENT WHILE GOING TO WORK WITH MY STUDENTS. I REPORTED IT TO HYUNDAI MOTOR OF AMERICA AND TOOK IT IN FOR REPAIRS IN SEPTEMBER 2007. THEY INSTALLED A REFURBISHED TRANSMISSION AND TOOK CARE OF ANOTHER POWERTRAIN ISSUE AND INSTALLED A NEW ALTERNATOR. HOWEVER IN THE FALL OF 2008 THE BATTERY AND ALTERNATOR WENT OUT AND I HAD TO PAY OUT OF POCKET TO GET IT FIXED ALTHOUGH THE ALTERNATOR WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. AFTER I TOOK MY HYUNDAI TO THE DEALER TO GET AN OIL CHANGE IN THE FALL OF 2010 I NOTICED THAT IT WAS ACTING STRANGE. NEEDLESS TO SAY MY TRANSMISSION WAS ACTING UP AGAIN AND I ALMOST GOT INTO AN ACCIDENT WITH 3 OTHER CARS DUE TO IT'S VIOLENT THRUSTING AND STALLING IN NOVEMBER 2010, DECEMBER 2010, JANUARY 2011 AND FEBRUARY 2011. IN APRIL 2011 IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT YET AGAIN I HAD TRANSMISSION FAILURE. I CONTACTED HYUNDAI SINCE MY TRANSMISSION FAILS EVERY 10,000 TO 70,000 MILES AND THE TRANSMISSION GOES OUT EVERY 1-4YEARS WITH MY CAR SO IT IS CONSISTENT. *TR

Negative 2003 Hyundai Accent car reviews

  1. Augustus Bechtelar 2024-10-08

I love my little car! It's great on gas, very peppy in traffic, and easy to park and maneuver. Although the interior can be a little loud, especially on the highway, it still provides a smooth ride.

  2. Rowland Wilkinson 2024-07-08

It's a cheap little car with zero extras, but with the 5-speed, it is a peppy and nimble little car. It has decent cargo space, but it is poorly made. It has been in the shop twice since I got it.

  3. Janick Leffler 2024-04-13

At 3000 miles, I had parts for the clutch replaced. At 5000 miles, DiFeo just did a little adjustment to the shift and it performed the way it was made to. However, they ignored my complaint about the back brake sound. Before the 7500 service, the shift had been grinding and the brake was squealing. They ordered the necessary parts, but as it was my only means of transportation and I needed it to get to my two jobs, I was worried. I was pleasantly surprised when they offered to provide me with a car. I took the car in early on Friday morning, but was told that the person who was to give me the car was not in. They promised to look into it. I had just spent 4 hours on a Saturday, so I was a bit frustrated. However, I appreciate their efforts and hope to avoid any further issues. Thank you for your help.

  4. Erin Hermann 2024-03-11

This is definitely a 'you get what you pay for' kind of car. While it may cost more than its major competitors, I have found that it lacks the craftsmanship that they offer. If you're in the market for a cheap economy car that isn't that economical, I would recommend a Toyota Echo or Suzuki Forenza any day.

  5. Reyes Borer 2024-02-04

At 18K miles, the car started to ride sluggishly so we had the transmission looked at. Fortunately, the car was still under warranty when it needed a new transmission at 22K miles, even though we bought it used with 12K miles on it.

Positive 2003 Hyundai Accent car reviews

  1. Wilfrid Collier 2024-11-20

The 2003 Accent is a great buy! It gets over 250 miles per fill up with its 1.6 liter engine. While it may not win any races, it's perfect for getting around town. The back seat is a bit small, but it's just right for kids. The trunk is spacious and even has drop-down back seats to allow for more room. With the electric package option, you can easily control all the windows and locks. The estimated maintenance cost (based on the manufacturer's schedule of 3750 miles or 3 months) is only about $20 per fill up. (My plan is to throw $20 into a savings account every fill up.) Plus, the tires are the smallest made, which should cut down on replacement costs too!

  2. Andy Hills 2024-11-02

This is a great car! It gets me from point A to point B without any worries. It's comfortable, affordable, and looks great. I average about 30 miles per gallon. I had a Honda Accord before this, but I would choose the Accent any day of the week.

  3. Korey Christiansen 2024-10-15

My wife and I recently purchased a 2003 Hyundai Accent base 2 dr. We were thrilled to find exactly what we wanted - a 2 door, 5 speed car with a radio and AC that gets excellent fuel economy. Living in rural Iowa, we need a car that can handle the snow and this one does not disappoint. Despite its lack of power at low rpms, it has plenty of pep when you rev it up. We are able to comfortably seat 4 adults thanks to Hyundai's clever use of space. The 5 speed transmission makes driving this car a lot of fun. As someone who has always owned American cars, I am impressed with the build quality and ease of maintenance of this foreign car. It's a great addition to our household, especially since our other car is a full size 89 Dodge RamCharger 4x4.

  4. Emil Tromp 2024-08-12

Congratulations on your new 2003 Accent! It sounds like you made a great choice. The ride is comfortable and the sound system is impressive for a stock car. It's also great to hear that it has some power under the hood. The 4DR sedan GL model seems to be very convenient with power everything. While it may not be a Mercedes, it certainly has a stylish and futuristic appearance. Enjoy your new ride!

  5. Paris Hansen 2024-08-08

This car is a fantastic choice for a first car. It comes with a great warranty and excellent safety features. However, if you plan on buying it and then trading it in after a few years, it may not be the best option.
