The Hyundai Accent (Korean: 현대 엑센트), or Hyundai Verna (현대 베르나) is a subcompact car produced by Hyundai. In Australia, the first generation models carried over the Hyundai Excel name used by the Accent's predecessor. The Accent was replaced in 2000 by the Hyundai Verna in South Korea, although most international markets, including the US, retained the "Accent" name. The "Accent" name is an abbreviation of Advanced Compact Car of Epoch-making New Technology.

The Accent is produced for the Chinese market by Beijing Hyundai Co., a joint venture with Beijing Automotive Industry Corp. For the Russian market it was assembled by the TagAZ plant in Taganrog until 2011, and since 2011 it was assembled by the HMMR plant in Saint Petersburg and sold under the new name Hyundai Solaris. In Mexico, the Accent was marketed until 2014 by Chrysler as the Dodge Attitude, previously known as the Verna by Dodge. In Venezuela, Chrysler marketed these models as the Dodge Brisa until 2006. The Brisa was assembled by Mitsubishi Motors at its plant in Barcelona, Venezuela. Since 2002, the Accent had been the longest-running small family car sold in North America. In Puerto Rico, the second and third generations were sold as the Hyundai Brio.

In 2008, Hyundai Accent was named the most dependable subcompact car by J.D. Power and Associates.

Common 2019 Hyundai Accent problems

The 2019 Hyundai Accent is known for some common problems that owners have reported. These issues mainly revolve around the transmission system, airbags, and throttle position sensor.

  • Transmission Failure: Some owners have reported gear slipping and clunking sounds when shifting gears in their 2019 Hyundai Accents. This is a common sign of a failing transmission. Clunking noises could be caused by various components such as the engine, exhaust system, driveshaft, differentials, or a wheel bearing. The inability to shift gears is another symptom of a bad transmission, which can be caused by incompatible transmission fluid, incorrect shift cable positioning, internal mechanic failure, a clogged filter, or a malfunctioning computer system.
  • Airbag Issues: There have been complaints about airbag issues in the 2019 Hyundai Accent. This can be a significant safety concern, and it is essential to address this issue promptly. If you suspect any airbag problems, it is recommended to consult a professional mechanic to diagnose and fix the issue.
  • Faulty Throttle Position Sensor: Some owners have reported issues with the throttle position sensor in their 2019 Hyundai Accents. This component is responsible for controlling the engine's fuel injection and ignition systems. A faulty throttle position sensor can cause various issues, including rough idling, poor acceleration, and stalling. If you suspect any problems with the throttle position sensor, it is recommended to consult a professional mechanic for diagnosis and repair.
  • Soy-Based Wiring Insulation: Some Hyundai Accents have soy-based wiring insulation, which can attract rodents to chew on the wires. This can lead to various electrical issues and is a common problem in areas with high rodent populations.

It is important to note that these issues may not affect all 2019 Hyundai Accents, and some cars may not experience any of these problems. However, it is essential to be aware of these common issues and address them promptly if they occur. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent these problems and ensure the longevity and reliability of your vehicle.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-16
  • VIN: 3KPC24A39KE
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I am writing to you as the owner of a 2019 Hyundai Accent, which has recently experienced severe engine issues including low compression in three cylinders, sludge build-up, and eventual engine failure. It has come to my attention that these issues are not isolated incidents but are rather indicative of a systemic problem with Hyundai Accent models of this year. As you are undoubtedly aware, numerous reports and complaints have surfaced regarding similar engine failures and defects in the 2019 Hyundai Accent. These issues have not only caused significant inconvenience and financial burden to individual owners like myself, but they also pose serious safety concerns. Given the widespread nature of these problems, it is evident that they are not mere anomalies but rather result from inherent flaws in the design or manufacturing process of the vehicles. As such, I am firmly of the belief that these issues should be addressed as part of a Hyundai class action lawsuit.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-01
  • VIN: 3KPC24A37KE
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I am writing to bring to your attention a critical safety concern regarding the 2019 Hyundai Accent, specifically regarding the persistent issue of oil burning in the engine. This problem has affected my vehicle, as well as numerous other owners of the same model year. Despite being well within the warranty period, when I brought my 2019 Hyundai Accent with approximately 50,000 miles to the dealership for repairs due to excessive oil consumption, I was met with refusal to address the issue under warranty. Upon further inquiry, it has come to my attention that this problem is widespread among Hyundai engines, with many owners experiencing similar issues. The consequences of this oil burning problem are not only financially burdensome for owners who are forced to continuously add oil between changes, but also pose a significant safety risk. Engine failure due to oil deprivation can result in sudden loss of power, leading to potentially hazardous situations, including accidents and injury. Despite numerous complaints and reports from Hyundai Accent owners, it appears that Hyundai has failed to take appropriate action to rectify this issue and ensure the safety and reliability of their vehicles. Therefore, I urge NHTSA to investigate this matter thoroughly and take necessary actions to hold Hyundai accountable for their failure to address this widespread and potentially dangerous defect in their vehicles. Owners like myself deserve a prompt and effective resolution to this issue to ensure the safety and integrity of our vehicles. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-24
  • VIN: 3KPC24A35KE
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: my vehicle had a fuel injector lock open flooding the car until it damaged the O2 sensor and also contaminating the engine oil. the car went through about two and a half gallons of gas in 3 minutes. during the repair process I mentioned to the dealership that the engine oil smells like gas and was a quart and a half higher than what it was after the last oil change 5 days prior. I'm believing the Quart and a half was most certainly all gas. the dealership informed me they could not repair the oil as it was not covered under warranty. if I wanted to dispute the warranty I had to contact Hyundai customer service. That was April 25th 2023 and as of May 23rd 2023 despite repeated phone calls Hyundai customer service they have never called me back. there are 2 safety issues in regards to this 1. when the fuel injector locked open dumping two and a half gallons of gas vapor in 3 minutes could easily have led to a fire or worse. 2. refusing to replace the contaminated engine oil is a safety issue because gas in the oil will cause the engine to fail. if this happens on the interstate which I drive all the time it could lead to a catastrophic accident involving me and other cars. eventually because I didn't have the money the dealership comped the oil change (I do not have the money for the change because had I changed the oil 5 days prior to the breakdown). the dealership recognized the safety hazard from contaminate engine oil but Hyundai motor company of America refuses to even call me back and if they had it their way would I would have just had me drive in a vehicle that represented a danger. the repair invoice has the oil change listed as warranty but it was not likely to be covered by warranty as the service customer service manager informed me they're going to have to fight with Hyundai and will probably end up competent in the long run. this was after 2 weeks of fighting with Hyundai to get them to pay for it and still they have never called me back.

Mr. Bushey at Hyudai verifed I need a new motor/engine and it will cost from 6k-8k . I now have a case number and the dealer is communicating with Hyundai of America/not sure what department. The car has 84k miles and the motor should not be faulty. I have been renting a car for 2 weeks, have no vehicle as a loaner and very concerned about why this original engine would just stop? The Dealer did verify it is the motor and I am still pending feedback ***** I have provided all service records to Hyundai of Inland Empire ******

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-29
  • VIN: 3KPC24A3XKE
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My 2019 Hyundai Accent engine failed at 65,004 miles. I've taken my car to a local Hyundai dealership from December 2020 up until it failing in December 2021, I've had an appointment at least once a month for my check engine light being on. They scheduled me my first appointment December 2020 and later told me they fixed the issue only for it to come back on a couple days later. I call them again letting them know and the schedule me again, same thing happens and the light comes back on a week later. This was an ongoing issue, the dealership kept telling me they fixed it and to make sure the gas cap was tightened but they could never stop my check engine light from coming back on. They told me back in September of 2021 that I had a large evap leak. When it came to finding this leak they were never successful. Fast forward to December 2021 my car started making these weird noises and I immediately brought it up to the same local Hyundai that I've been taking it to since day one. They tell me there is nothing they can do for me since they are booked up until Feb. 2022 and so were all the other dealerships near me. I understood and left then a week or two after this my car completely stops in the middle of the expressway. I had to get my car towed to Hyundai for them to tell e my engine seized, coincidental right? After an entire year of Hyundai not being able to find the issue and fix it my engine magically seizes, a 2019 Hyundai at that meaning the car is still fairly new. The entire time I was taking it there I was under warranty up until 5,004 miles ago. The powertrain warranty for a used car ends at 60,000 miles and now Hyundai expects me to pay for something I had no fault in. I have emailed, complained and spoke to almost everyone I can about this issue. I just want justice to be rightfully served and for Hyundai to cover all expenses towards my new engine replacement.

Negative 2019 Hyundai Accent car reviews

  1. Odell Carter 2024-07-23

If you love the feeling of wet grass under your feet, or don't mind keeping your windows up due to the interior components, then this car might be for you. However, it's worth noting that some components, such as door handles, cup holders, and interior trimming, may be prone to breaking in colder temperatures.

  2. Abdul Pagac 2024-04-22

I sold my 2013 Toyota Corolla to my son to replace his 1999 Ford Escort and bought a 2018 Hyundai Accent for myself. The Accent seemed like a great car during my test drives, with a six-speed manual transmission and a 1.6-liter engine that was easy to get used to. It shifted smoothly and had sufficient power, and I was pleased to see that the average MPG was 47 for my combination of highway and city driving. Although the ride is fairly firm, it's quieter at highway speeds than the Corolla. Unfortunately, at around 140 miles, the car started running rough and the Check Engine light came on. It felt like the car was running on two cylinders, but the dealer replaced the spark plugs and the car has been running smoothly ever since. I'm happy to report that at 21,000 miles, the car is still running well and I'm getting 43-44 MPG. Overall, I'm pleased with my purchase and hope that the long-term reliability will be good.Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that I haven't been able to add many miles recently, as I'm now working from home 3 days a week.

Positive 2019 Hyundai Accent car reviews

  1. Tod Lebsack 2025-01-05

So glad to hear that you're enjoying your car! It's great to hear that you're getting such good gas mileage, averaging 39mpg on both street and freeway driving. The 7inch infotainment system with Apple car play sounds like a great feature. It's wonderful to hear that even after 22,000 miles, your car is still an awesome commuter!

  2. Wilfred Kuvalis 2024-10-22

Hello! In 2019, my husband and I bought a 2018 Hyundai Accent with 32,000 miles on it. We've been driving it for almost a year and a half now and it has 77,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, within the first two weeks of getting the car, the front left bumper popped out of place. We've had the clip replaced three times now, but it keeps popping out after a few days. Lately, we've been having some trouble with the A/C flickering off and on while we're driving or even when the car is idling with the air on. We do wish we had been able to get an Elantra because we could use a bit more space, but overall, this car would be perfect for a single parent, a younger driver, or an older person. It's not really a family car, but it does have a little get up and go as long as you don't turn the AC past 2. Thanks for reading!

  3. Lavern Durgan 2024-09-18

I'm so glad to hear that you've had this car for 4 years without any problems! It's great to know that it's easy to maneuver and park. I'm also happy to hear that your recent maintenance check went well and everything is good!

  4. Jamil Donnelly 2024-07-03

I'm glad to hear that you have had such a positive experience with your 2018 car! It's great to know that you have driven 44,000 miles without any issues and that the original brakes are still working well. With 36 mpg in town and 44 mpg on the highway, it sounds like you are getting excellent fuel efficiency. The engineers have done a great job tweaking the 1.6 naturally aspirated engine to provide low-end torque, which makes for decent acceleration from a start. Although the engine can run out of steam when pushed, it's important to remember that this is a small engine and can't be expected to do everything. The transmission shifts flawlessly, which is always a plus. I'm also happy to hear that the cargo space is surprisingly good with the rear seats down. While the ride can be a bit busy on rough potholed roads, the handling is much better than expected. Lastly, I agree that the light color upholstery looks richer than the more monotone black/grey. Overall, it sounds like you have found a great value in this economy car!

  5. Shane Thiel 2024-06-27

This certified used Accent Limited has only 38k miles and comes with a variety of features, including LED headlights/tail lights, LED turn signals in side mirrors, a moon roof, heated seats/mirrors, Apple CarPlay, auto start control, auto temperature control, 17-inch alloys with performance tires, emergency auto braking, and a 6-speaker stereo. With all these features, it's a great value for the money, and it also has great gas mileage and warranty. While the back seat may be a bit tight, it's not a concern for me since I won't be sitting back there. Overall, I highly recommend the Limited model.
