1997 Hyundai Accent problems

hyundai logo

The Hyundai Accent (Korean: 현대 엑센트), or Hyundai Verna (현대 베르나) is a subcompact car produced by Hyundai. In Australia, the first generation models carried over the Hyundai Excel name used by the Accent's predecessor. The Accent was replaced in 2000 by the Hyundai Verna in South Korea, although most international markets, including the US, retained the "Accent" name. The "Accent" name is an abbreviation of Advanced Compact Car of Epoch-making New Technology.

The Accent is produced for the Chinese market by Beijing Hyundai Co., a joint venture with Beijing Automotive Industry Corp. For the Russian market it was assembled by the TagAZ plant in Taganrog until 2011, and since 2011 it was assembled by the HMMR plant in Saint Petersburg and sold under the new name Hyundai Solaris. In Mexico, the Accent was marketed until 2014 by Chrysler as the Dodge Attitude, previously known as the Verna by Dodge. In Venezuela, Chrysler marketed these models as the Dodge Brisa until 2006. The Brisa was assembled by Mitsubishi Motors at its plant in Barcelona, Venezuela. Since 2002, the Accent had been the longest-running small family car sold in North America. In Puerto Rico, the second and third generations were sold as the Hyundai Brio.

In 2008, Hyundai Accent was named the most dependable subcompact car by J.D. Power and Associates.

Common 1997 Hyundai Accent problems

The Hyundai Accent, produced since 1994, is a popular choice for commuters due to its fuel efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and general consistency. However, like any vehicle, the Hyundai Accent has had its share of problems over the years. The 1997 Hyundai Accent, in particular, has had issues that have been reported by owners.

One common problem with the 1997 Hyundai Accent is rust in the lower suspension/coil spring, which can be caused by road salt in areas where roads are heavily salted during the winter.

Another issue reported by 1997 Hyundai Accent owners is the sudden stoppage of sound from all speakers in non-hybrid versions of the vehicle.

These are just a few of the common problems reported by 1997 Hyundai Accent owners. It's important to note that the Accent has a great reliability rating of 4.5/5, putting it in 5th place out of 21 subcompact cars.

When considering the purchase of a used Hyundai Accent, it's important to ask the seller for the vehicle's issues and repair history to help make an informed decision.

1997 Hyundai Accent engine

What is the common problem of Hyundai Accent?

Problem: The ignition coil is known for failing on the Accent. If you have noticed that the engine management warning light has appeared on the dashboard and/or you are having problems with the engine misfiring (poor idling), then the ignition coil will be faulty.

Is Hyundai Accent a reliable car?

Every Accent model year has a well-earned reputation for being a practical and reliable choice when it comes to compact cars because nearly every model year variation has met or exceeded expectations on all the important attributes drivers prioritize in their vehicles.

What is the gas mileage on a 1997 Hyundai Accent?

Based on data from 5 vehicles, 151 fuel-ups and 37,094 miles of driving, the 1997 Hyundai Accent gets a combined Avg MPG of 28.05 with a 1.00 MPG margin of error. Below you can see a distribution of the fuel-ups with 1 outliers (0.66%) removed.

What problems are common in a 1999 Hyundai Accent?

When it does go wrong, electrical faults are the most common, followed by problems with the axles and suspension. Repairs to the brakes come next, followed by cooling and heating system troubles. Engine faults are rare, although gearbox problems plague older models from 2000-2002.

AIR BAGS,EQUIPMENT PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-12-16
  • VIN: KMHVD34N1VU
  • Components: AIR BAGS,EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: DEAR SIR I WOULD LIKE TO BRING THE SURPRISING ISSUE IN FRONT OF YOU RELATED TO HYUNDAI ACCENT I HAVE BEEN DRIVING FOR MORE THAN A YEAR NOW. I WAS DRIVING THIS CAR ON THE 401 EAST HIGHWAY, ONTARIO, CANADA ON 16TH DECEMBER 2007 AT 2.35 P.M. MY WIFE AND MY LITTLE ONE AND A HALF YEAR DAUGHTER WERE ALSO ACCOMPANYING ME. I WAS COMING FROM WINDSOR AND HEADING TOWARDS TORONTO. SUDDENLY THE AIR BAG OF THE DRIVER SEAT BLEW UP WITHOUT ANY COLLISION OF MY CAR WITH ANY THING. I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH THAT I WAS DRIVING IN THE RIGHT LANE AND MANAGED TO BRING MY CAR OUT OF THE DRIVING LANE. DUE TO ALMIGHTY'S GRACE NO CAR WAS FOLLOWING ME OTHERWISE THAT WOULD HAVE LEAD TO A DISASTER. I WAS AMAZED TO SEE THIS IN FRONT OF MY EYES THAT HOW COULD AIRBAG OF THE CAR BLEW UP WITHOUT ANY COLLISION. I AM CONFIDENT THAT THIS WOULD HAVE SURPRISED YOU TOO THAT HOW COULD YOU MANUFACTURE SUCH A DREADFUL VEHICLE IN WHICH THE PARTS ACTIVATE AT THE WRONG TIME AND COULD LEAD TO ACCIDENTS INSTEAD OF ACTIVATING FOR THE SAFETY OF PASSENGERS. I AM THANKFUL TO 911 EMERGENCY THAT THEY CAME ON TIME AND TOOK US OUT OF THE SITUATION AND WE MANAGED TO REACH BACK HOME SAFELY. I IMPRESS UPON YOU TO LOOK INTO THIS SERIOUS ISSUE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. I AM ALSO INTERESTED TO BRING THIS ISSUE TO OTHER CAR MANUFACTURERS AND LEGAL DEPARTMENTS WHICH HAVE AUTHORIZED YOU TO MANUFACTURE CARS WITHOUT TAKING THESE THINGS INTO CONSIDERATION AND THE PASSENGERS HAVE TO PUT THERE LIVES ON RISK DUE TO YOUR SHEER NEGLIGENCE. I WOULD LIKE YOU TO COMPENSATE ME FOR ALL THE HASSLES AND RISK OF LIFE MY FAMILY AND I HAVE BEEN THROUGH AND PROVIDE ME WITH OTHER CAR WHICH IS FULLY CHECKED. I SPOKE WITH THE REPRESENTATIVE MS. MITCHEL AT THE HYUNDAI AMERICA NO. SHE HAS REGISTERED THIS SERIOUS ISSUE AND ASSIGNED CLAIM NO. 3182613. I WOULD LIKE THIS MAIL TO BE FORWARDED TO THE CONCERNED PERSON AS SOON AS POSSIBLE SO THAT THEY CAN LOOK INTO THIS MATTER SERIOUSLY. THANKS AND REGARDS RAJAN MALHOTRA *TR

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-06-03
  • VIN: KMHVD34NXVU
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT THIS WEEK FOR WHICH THE DEALER WANTS TO CHARGE ME $99 TO INSPECT A CRACKED FUEL TANK PER RECALL IN WHICH POSSIBLY 66,086 VEHICLES OF MY TYPE ARE INVOLVED. I HAVE THE FEELING THAT THE DEALER WILL TRY NOT TO COVER THIS REPAIR. SEE MY DETAILS BELOW. RECALL CAMPAIGN: 00V314001. SHOULD THE DEALER BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS REPAIR? THIS CAR IS IN PERFECT SHAPE DESPITE THE MILEAGE. IT HAS NEVER BEEN HIT, TOWED OR IMPROPERLY JACKED. I HAVE A 1997 ACCENT GT ( MFG 04/16/97). I WAS NOTIFIED BY MAIL SOME MONTHS BACK THAT THE GAS CAP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED TO PREVENT EXCESS PRESSURE BUILDUP IN THE TANK THAT MIGHT LEAD TO THE TANK CRACKING. I WENT TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP, EARNHARDT HYUNDAI IN GILBERT, AZ, AND THEY REPLACED THE CAP AS SPECIFIED AND SUPPOSEDLY PRESSURE TESTED THE TANK. NOT LONG AFTER THAT I BEGAN TO SMELL FUMES WHENEVER I FILLED UP AND THE SMELL CONTINUED FOR 50 TO 75 MILES BEFORE ABATING. I DROPPED THE TANK AND CHECKED EVERYTHING I COULD FIND, REINSTALLED, AND STILL HAD THE PROBLEM. TODAY I DROPPED THE TANK AGAIN AND UPON CLOSE INSPECTION I FOUND A SMALL CRACK (ABOUT 1/2 INCH) IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TOP OF THE TANK. CLEARLY THE TANK NEEDS TO BE REPLACED BUT "IS THERE IS AN IMPROVED TANK?" AND "WILL IT BE COVERED IN CONNECTION WITH THE GAS CAP RECALL?" SINCE CAUSE AND EFFECT HAS BEEN DEMONSTRATED. THE DEALERSHIP IS NOT COOPERATING WITH THIS REPAIR. IT IS MY COMPLAINT AND DEMAND THAT HYUNDAI MUST PROVIDE FULL, PROMPT REMEDY FOR THIS POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS (FLAMMABLE) DEFECT BUT HASN'T DONE SO. THIS CAR HAS 162,640 MILES (BUT RUNS LIKE NEW!). DON'T GET THIS WRONG, IT IS A GREAT CAR BUT HAS A SERIOUS DEFECT AND HYUNDAI IS NOT STEPPING UP TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE REPAIR WHICH THE DEALER ESTIMATES WILL COST APPROXIMATELY $350 TO FIX. OPTIONAL INFORMATION: 1997 HYUNDAI ACCENT 1.5L DOHC. *TR

  • Summary: FOR THE PC SYSTEM PROBLEM, I HAD NOTICED THAT THE PC VALVE WAS LEAKING OIL AROUND IT, SO I REPLACED THE COMPONENT ON MAY 12,2000. BY DECEMBER, I NOTICED THAT THE CAR HAD SOME SORT OF PROBLEM WITH A NOTED DROP IN PERFORMANCE AND FUEL ECONOMY. SO I DECIDED, BEFORE BRINGING THE CAR IN FOR MAINTENANCE, TO VISUALLY CHECK THE FLUIDS, AND WEAR COMPONENTS. I ENDED UP FINDING SLUDGE IN THE ENGINE, CREATED BY WATER IN THE OIL. WHEN DODGE/HYUNDAI OF PARAMUS CHECKED-OUT THE CAR THEY TOLD ME THE PROBLEM WAS A CLOGGED PC SYSTEM AND IT WAS NOT COVERED BY ANY WARRANY, SO I PAID FOR THE WORK. FOR THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEM I NOTICED THAT IT WAS LEAKING, AND WHEN THE DEALER IN PARAMUS CHECKED-OUT THE PROBLEM, THEY TOLD ME THAT SOMEONE HAD OVER-TORQUED THE OIL PAN, BLOWING OUT THE GASKET. THEY TOLD ME THAT THE PROBLEM SHOULD BE WARRANTEED BY ALTMAN IN N.CHARLESTON, SINCE THEY DID THE 30K CHECK-UP. WHEN I INFORMED ALTMAN, THEY TOLD ME THAT PARAMUS SHOULD HAVE DONE THE WORK AS WARRANTEED. SO, MIKE AT ALTMAN TOLD ME I WOULD RECEIVE A REFUND, BUT I NEVER DID, AND MIKE DOEN'T WORK THERE ANYMORE, AND NO ONE ELSE KNOWS ANYTHING. I TALKED TO HYUN. MOTOR AMER. CUST. SERVICE, AND I AM CURRENTLY WAITING FOR A CALL BACK. WHAT I WANT TO KNOW IS IF EITHER OF THESE IS COVERED BY WARRANTY, AND IF SO WHAT THEN?

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • VIN: KMHVD34N2VU
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: WE WERE LEAVING FOR VACATION IN NEW JERSEY, DRIVING WESTBOUND ON I-26, AT THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT, JUST EAST OF THE ST. GEORGE EXIT. WHEN THE SOUND OF AIR RUSHING INTO THE CAR BECAME APPARENT. THE SUN ROOF PREVIOUSLY UNOPENED THAT DAY, STARTED SHAKING, AND FLIPPED BACKWARDS DENTING THE ROOF. THE REAR CATCH BROKE OFF AND THE ENTIRE ASSEMBLY THEN FLEW OFF INTO TRAFFIC. THE VEHICLE WHICH NARROWLY AVOIDED THE ROOF ASSEMBLY PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE AS DID WE. THEY TOLD US THEY WERE ALRIGHT AND WE ALL THANKED GOD THEN THEY WERE ON THEIR WAY. IT WAS RATHER LATE IN THE EVENING BUT WE DECIDED TO GO TO THE DEALER ANYWAY. THE GENERAL MANAGER TOLD US THERE WAS NOTHING HE COULD DO AND TO COME BACK WHEN SERVICE WAS OPEN, THE NEXT MORNING. WE THEN WENT HOME AND CALLED LOCAL POLICE. THEY CALLED THE STATE POLICE, WHO INFORMED US THAT IT WAS A "FREAK-ACCIDENT" AND TO TALK TO THE DEALER AND OUR INSURANCE COMPANY. ON SATURDAY WE WENT TO THE DEALER AND THE ASSISTANT SERVICE MANAGER, JASON, TOLD US THERE WAS NOTHING HE COULD DO UNTIL MONDAY, WHEN THEY WOULD CHECK FOR A DEFECT. IN THE MEANTIME, HE OBTAINED A RENTAL CAR FROM ENTERPRISE TO CONTINUE OUR TRIP, AND FILED THE CLAIM AS A WARRANTY PROBLEM. UPON TAKING THE CAR HOME WE FOUND THAT THE RENTAL CAR WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE DUE TO INOPERABLE SIDE MIRRORS, SO WE TOOK OUR OTHER CAR. WE CALLED FROM NEW JERSEY ON MONDAY, BUT JASON WAS NOT IN AND NO ONE ELSE KNEW ANYTHING ABOUT THE SITUATION AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD HAVE HIM CALL. JASON CALLED THURSDAY TO INFORM US THAT THERE IS NO DEFECT AND THE PROBLEM IS NOT WARRANTEED. HE ALSO SAID THAT WE MUST RETURN THE RENTAL CAR BECAUSE THE COST WOULD NOT BE COVERED BY THE DEALER SINCE IT IS NEITHER A DEFECT NOR UNDER WARRANTY. JASON TOLD US TO REPLACE THE MOON ROOF THE JOB WOULD COST APPROX. $1500+, NOT INCLUDING SUBSEQUENT DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE. WE THEN CALLED HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA CUSTOMER SERVICE, THE REP. TOLD US THAT IT COULD BE COVERED AS GOOD-WILL, WITH RENTAL ASSIST.

1997 Hyundai Accent recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 1997 Hyundai Accent.

1998-10-06
  • Manufacturer: HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA
  • Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:SPRINGS:COIL SPRINGS
  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE FOLLOWING "SALT BELT" STATES: CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WEST VIRGINIA, AND WISCONSIN. DURING WINTER MONTHS, THE ROAD SALT USED TO DE-ICE ROADS CAN RESULT IN CORROSION THAT CAUSES PITS TO FORM ON THE LOWER COIL OF THE FRONT SPRINGS ALLOWING CRACKS TO DEVELOP. THIS CAN RESULT IN BREAKAGE OF THE LOWER SPRING COIL.
  • Consequence: IF THE FRONT COIL SPRING BREAKS, IT CAN BECOME DISPLACED FROM ITS SEATED POSITION, AND CAN CONTACT A TIRE. TIRE DAMAGE CAN RESULT.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A SPRING GUIDE TO PREVENT A BROKEN COIL SPRING FROM CONTACTING AND DAMAGING A TIRE.
1997-02-26
  • Manufacturer: HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA
  • Components: VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER:MOTOR
  • Summary: THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR CIRCUIT BREAKER ELECTRICAL CONTACTS WERE CONTAMINATED DURING ASSEMBLY.
  • Consequence: THIS CONTAMINATION INTERFERES WITH THE ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT CONTINUITY AND PREVENTS THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR FROM OPERATING. INOPERATIVE WINDSHIELD WIPERS CAN CONTRIBUTE TO REDUCED VISIBILITY DURING INCLEMENT WEATHER INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE CONTAMINANTS FROM THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR CIRCUIT BREAKER CONTACTS.

Negative 1997 Hyundai Accent car reviews

  1. Erling Jerde 2024-10-06

This vehicle is not suitable for extreme conditions such as steep slopes or hills, as the brakes may not function properly and the engine may overheat. However, under normal circumstances, the vehicle performs adequately.

  2. Seamus Feil 2024-09-20

This car has not lived up to my expectations since I purchased it almost two years ago. Its features are not exceptional, and it struggles to climb hills with the air conditioning on. However, it may still be suitable for those who prioritize practicality over enjoyment during their daily commute.

  3. Alberto Gaylord 2024-09-07

Although I experienced some issues with this car, I believe they are not representative of the quality of all Hyundai vehicles. I would consider purchasing a different model in the future.

  4. Trent Rohan 2024-08-13

This vehicle has some limitations. It tends to skid and the brakes may not work when starting off down a slope. It may also struggle to climb upslopes or hills, and the engine may start to heat up. However, under normal conditions, the vehicle performs well. It is important to be aware of these limitations and adjust your driving accordingly.

  5. Lonzo Trantow 2024-07-20

I received my Hyundai as a graduation gift from high school. In the almost 7 years I've had this car, it has only needed major work done 3 times, and I purchased it with only 11k miles on it. The gas mileage is great, especially considering this is my second vehicle. Overall, I would definitely buy another one if they didn't depreciate in value so quickly.

Positive 1997 Hyundai Accent car reviews

  1. Willy Stehr 2024-08-13

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with the Accent. This is actually my third one! My first was a 1997 hatch GS with 54,000 miles on it and no issues. Unfortunately, it was involved in an accident and totaled. My second Accent was a Hatch L that I purchased in 1999 with 40,000 miles on it. I have had absolutely no problems with it and I still have it with 96,000 miles on it. Since then, I have purchased a 1997 Accent GT. I have owned a Grand Am in 86 & 92 (when they redesigned it), but both cars had issues starting in the winter. Needless to say, I will never buy one again.

  2. Jarrell Jakubowski 2024-05-13

You're in luck! I have a Hyundai Accent for sale that's been very well taken care of. It's a 1997 model with only 60,000 miles on it, and it's been regularly maintained with oil changes and upkeep. It's a great car that gets excellent mileage and has affordable tires. I'm asking $3000 for it, which I think is a very reasonable price. Let me know if you're interested!

  3. Kelton Brakus 2024-04-04

The 4 dr Accent was the best vehicle you have owned. It sounds like it has been a lot of fun to drive and has never given you any problems beyond routine maintenance. It's understandable that it will be hard to part with it after having it for 4 years.

  4. Miller Hettinger 2024-03-10

My 97 accent manual hatchback L has taken care of me more than my mother ever has. I owned good ole L-Swift Mckay from mile zero to mile 103,000. I reluctantly gave it up after 4 years and 10 months of unadulterated dependability and perseverance.

  5. Darius Hoppe 2024-01-01

Congratulations on your first Hyundai! It's great to hear that the car runs well with no major problems, and that the occasional engine light was an easy fix. With gas prices on the rise, it's good to have a reliable car like yours that gets good mileage. While it may not be the fastest car out there, it certainly provides a smooth and comfortable ride. Best of luck with your growing family!
