1999 Hyundai Accent problems
The Hyundai Accent (Korean: 현대 엑센트), or Hyundai Verna (현대 베르나) is a subcompact car produced by Hyundai. In Australia, the first generation models carried over the Hyundai Excel name used by the Accent's predecessor. The Accent was replaced in 2000 by the Hyundai Verna in South Korea, although most international markets, including the US, retained the "Accent" name. The "Accent" name is an abbreviation of Advanced Compact Car of Epoch-making New Technology.
The Accent is produced for the Chinese market by Beijing Hyundai Co., a joint venture with Beijing Automotive Industry Corp. For the Russian market it was assembled by the TagAZ plant in Taganrog until 2011, and since 2011 it was assembled by the HMMR plant in Saint Petersburg and sold under the new name Hyundai Solaris. In Mexico, the Accent was marketed until 2014 by Chrysler as the Dodge Attitude, previously known as the Verna by Dodge. In Venezuela, Chrysler marketed these models as the Dodge Brisa until 2006. The Brisa was assembled by Mitsubishi Motors at its plant in Barcelona, Venezuela. Since 2002, the Accent had been the longest-running small family car sold in North America. In Puerto Rico, the second and third generations were sold as the Hyundai Brio.
In 2008, Hyundai Accent was named the most dependable subcompact car by J.D. Power and Associates.

Common 1999 Hyundai Accent problems
The Hyundai Accent, produced between 1999 and 2003, is known for its reliability and fuel efficiency. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some issues that have been reported by owners of the 1999 Hyundai Accent
- Engine problems: Engine-related issues are the most common problem category for the Hyundai Accent. The 1.3-liter and 1.5-liter engines, in particular, have been reported to have issues with the timing belt. The timing belt should be replaced every 50,000 kilometers, but there have been cases where the belt broke closer to 60,000 kilometers. The camshaft drive chain should also be replaced between 100,000 and 120,000 kilometers as it is often stretched by this time. When replacing the timing belt, the pump should also be updated as it can leak or make noise after 80,000 to 110,000 kilometers. The valve clearance is adjusted using hydraulic tappets, which can knock after 200,000 to 250,000 kilometers due to the weakening of the plunger spring of the oil pump.
- Valve cover gasket leaks: The valve cover gasket may leak after 150,000 to 200,000 kilometers. This can cause oil consumption to increase, often due to hardened valve stem seals.
- Brake problems: Brake cylinders of the rear brake drums can sometimes turn sour, often requiring disassembly, cleaning, and lubrication. In cars older than 10 to 12 years, the front brake pipes can rust under the rubber seal at the point of transitions through the wheel arch partition. Problems with the ABS can occur due to oxidation of the motor, which quickly comes to its senses after cleaning. The steering rack may require attention after 150,000 to 200,000 kilometers.
- Body and paint issues: The body iron of the Hyundai Accent is not prone to corrosion, but rust can be a sign of poor repair in the past. Red spots can be found in the area of the rear wheel arches and sills in individual specimens older than 10 years. The paint often peels off the bumpers, and the interior decoration uses cheap plastic that eventually begins to creak.
- Electrical faults: Electrical faults are the most common problem for the Hyundai Accent. Repairs to the brakes come next, followed by cooling and heating system troubles.
It is important to note that these problems are not exclusive to the 1999 Hyundai Accent and may be present in other model years as well. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or mitigate these issues.
What problems are common in a 1999 Hyundai Accent?
When it does go wrong, electrical faults are the most common, followed by problems with the axles and suspension. Repairs to the brakes come next, followed by cooling and heating system troubles. Engine faults are rare, although gearbox problems plague older models from 2000-2002.
What is the common problem of Hyundai Accent?
Problem: The ignition coil is known for failing on the Accent. If you have noticed that the engine management warning light has appeared on the dashboard and/or you are having problems with the engine misfiring (poor idling), then the ignition coil will be faulty.
What is the mileage of Hyundai Accent 1999?
9.4 kmpl
The ARAI mileage of Hyundai Accent [1999-2003] is 9.4 kmpl. The Hyundai Accent [1999-2003] petrol mileage starts from 9.4 kmpl.
Is Hyundai Accent good or not?

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-03-10
- VIN: KMHVF24N8XU
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: IN MARCH OF 2004 THE TRANSMISSION IN MY CAR, A 99 HYUNDAI ACCENT, STARTED SLIPPING. I TOOK IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP, SYCAMORE CHEVROLET IN TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA, WHICH I BOUGHT THE CAR TO BE SERVICED SINCE IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRENTY. THEY CHARGED ME $350 FOR PARTS AND LABOR, AFTER I TOLD THEM THAT IF THE PROBLEM WASNT WARRENTY NOT TO DO ANYTHING SINCE I HAD NO MONEY AT THE TIME. THEY TOLD ME THEY CHANGED THE 2ND GEAR BELT, A CLUTCH SENSOR, AND THE TRANSMISSION FILTER AND FLUID BECAUSE THE SEAL HOLDING IT TOGETHER WAS BAD. 2 WEEKS LATER I TAKE IT BACK. THEY TELL ME THEY CANT FIND THE PROBLEM AND EVEN ACCUSE ME OF MAKING IT UP. AFTER I LEFT THERE WITH MY CAR I TOOK IT TO A SHOP IN PARIS. HE TOOK IT FOR A DRIVE CAME BACK AND CHANGED THE TRANSMISSION FILTER HIMSELF AND SHOWED ME THAT THE FILTER ON MY CAR WAS SO CLOGGED THAT NOTHING WAS GETTING THROUGH. IT RAN FINE UNTIL ABOUT 3 WEEKS AGO. SINCE THEN I HAVE HAD IT IN 2 MORE SHOPS. A SENSOR IN MY TRANSMISSION IS GOING OUT AND THEY HAVE YET TO PINPOINT WHICH ONE IT IS. COME TO FIND OUT AFTER LOOKING THROUGH THIS SITE AND A COUPLE OTHERS, MY TRANSMISSION WAS RECALLED AFTER I BOUGHT IT FOR THE SAME PROBLEMS IM HAVING IN IT NOW. ITS SLIPPING OUT OF GEAR DURING ACCELERATION AND DOWNSHIFTING HARD AND STICKING WHEN COMING TO A STOP. I NEVER RECEIVED NOTICE ABOUT THIS RECALL AND NO ONE HAS MENTIONED IT WHEN IVE BROUGHT IT IN. I HAVE BEEN STRANDED FOR HOURS WHEN MY TRANSMISSION IS STUCK IN 1ST. I HAVE HAD 5 VERY CLOSE CALLS WHEN IM DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND IT SLIPS OUT OF GEAR, 2 OF THEM BEING WHILE SEMIS ARE BEHIND ME. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING MY CAR SO I AM NOW BEING LEFT WITHOUT A VEHICLE AND 2 YEARS LEFT TO PAY ON IT. HYUNDIA USA IN CALIFORNIA HAS BEEN NOTIFIED ABOUT MY COMPLAINT WITH THEIR SERVICE AND ABOUT MY CAR AND ALL I WAS OFFERED WAS A $75 CREDIT TO MY ACCOUNT WITH ANY HYUNDAI REP. THEY DENY THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSION EVEN AFTER I HAVE FOUND PROOF ON HERE OF THE RECALL. *AK
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-09-05
- VIN: KMHVF24N3XU
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I BOUGHT MY CAR IN SEPTEMBER OF 1999 FROM A CAR DEALERSHIP. OVER A YEAR AGO MY TRANSMISSION STARTING SLIPPING I BROUGHT IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP UNDER WARRENTY THEY SAID IT WAS A SENSOR AND REPLACED IT. JUST 2 DAYS AGO MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND I NOW LONGER HAD 4TH GEAR AND 3RD WOULD SLIP IN AND OUT. I LEARNED THERE WAS A RECALL AND THAT THE DEALERSHIP WAS SUPPOSED TO REPLACE THIS SENSOR BEFORE I BOUGHT THE CAR AND AGAIN WHEN I BROUGHT IT IN LAST YEAR. THIS IS A BIG HASSLE NOT TO MENTION MY CHECK AIRBAG LIGHT IS ALSO ON AND MY ALTERNATER WENT ON THE FRITZ A FEW MONTHS AGO. THIS CAR IS TOO NEW FOR THESE PROBLEMS AND I DONT THINK I WILL EVER BUY ANOTHER HYUNDAI AGAIN.*AK
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-07-02
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: THE VEHICLE IS A 1999 HYUNDAI ACCENT AND I PURCHASED IT NEW. ON JULY 2, 2004 I GOT IN MY CAR AND TURNED IT ON. WHEN I TRIED TO PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE IT WOULD NOT MOVE. THE GEAR SHIFT IS STUCK IN 'PARK' AND WILL NOT MOVE UNLESS THE OVERRIDE SWITCH IS DEPRESSED. A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN WAS ISSUED BY HYUNDAI FOR THIS EXACT ISSUE (#99-40-017), SO THEY ALREADY KNOW THAT THE PROBLEM EXISTS. BUT, THE DEALERSHIPS I CONTACTED IN MY AREA WILL NOT FIX THE PROBLEM BECAUSE MY CAR HAS A LITTLE OVER 80,000 MILES AND IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. I CONTACTED HYUNDAI CONSUMER AFFAIRS AND THEY ALSO SAID I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYING FOR THE REPAIRS EVEN THOUGH I NEVER CAUSED THE PROBLEM. *NM
1999 Hyundai Accent recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 1999 Hyundai Accent.
- Manufacturer: HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION PRESSURE CONTROL SOLENOID VALVE SEALS DO NOT REMAIN SUFFICIENTLY ELASTIC, RESULTING IN TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAKAGE. THIS LEAKAGE CAN RESULT IN REDUCED PRESSURE APPLICATION TO THE CLUTCHES, BRAKE, AND KICKDOWN SERVO, ALLOWING THEM TO SLIP.
- Consequence: SUCH SLIPPAGE CAN CAUSE PREMATURE DETERIORATION OF THE FRICTION ELEMENT SURFACES AND COULD CAUSE THE VEHICLE NOT TO ACCELERATE, OR NOT ACCELERATE AS EXPECTED, WHEN THE DRIVER PRESSES THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE PRESSURE CONTROL SOLENOID VALVE.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my thoughts on this amazing car. It's a 1999 Hyundai Accent, and let me tell you, it's a reliable little ride! I've seen many of my friends' BMWs and Fords break down, but my car has never let me down. I take regular maintenance seriously, and it shows - even with over 150,000 miles, I still average 35mpg with both highway and city driving. It may not be the most attractive car out there, but it definitely makes up for it in swag points! Plus, there's plenty of room in the interior for hauling basics. Overall, I highly recommend this car for anyone looking for efficiency and reliability.
-
I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my new car. I've only had it for 3 days, so I can't speak to its reliability just yet. However, I'm really impressed with how well it drives despite having only a 92 hp engine. I was able to purchase it for a great price of $2,351, including taxes and tags. It has 75,000 miles on it, but there are no leaks and the oil and transmission both look good. The clutch is nice and firm, and the car still looks shiny on the outside and clean on the inside. As someone who has owned three cars, I have to say that this one is my favorite so far!
-
When I got a new job that required me to commute 100 miles per day, I needed a car that was affordable and reliable. I absolutely love this car! It has plenty of cargo room for a small car, and I've been able to fit more in it than my friends thought was possible. The only issue I had before reaching 100,000 miles was some paint chipping on the front bumper. After that, a few small things started to break, like a plastic holder for the cargo shield, but they were easily replaced. I've had to put a little money into it for things like the timing belt, oxygen sensor, and exhaust pipe, but not much. Overall, it's been a great little car that has proven to be very reliable, even at 116k miles.
-
I'm glad to hear that you haven't had any issues with your car! It sounds like it has served you well for your commute to school. Now that you're in a professional career, it might be time to consider upgrading. While it may not have a lot of power, it seems like it was a good value for the price.
-
You made a great choice buying this car! It started with no problem even in the worst Alberta weather and handles great on snow and ice. It's a simple and reliable car for transportation with good fuel economy. Plus, it's impressively quiet for a car at this price.

This car has great gas mileage and is excellent at plowing through snow. However, we have had some issues with the transmission sensor since 25K. When we lose the high and low gears, I turn the car off to reset the sensor. This usually works, but if not, I start in 2nd gear and upshift to D. Unfortunately, this car is not suitable for highway traveling. The transmission sensor has already been replaced once and is due for another replacement. Additionally, there is very little headroom in this car. If we wear more than a heavy sweatshirt, there is barely enough room for two people in the front.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with the car I bought in Canada. It had 10300 km's on it and I got it for $4400. While I found the car to be small and comfy, I did have some trouble with the hub caps rusting very easily and needing to be replaced almost right away. If you're a tall person, I wouldn't recommend this car. Thanks for listening!
Clark Champlin 2024-06-28
The car had several issues, including a poor suspension and difficulty shifting gears on the highway. Additionally, the air conditioner has been problematic since the day of purchase, with no solution found thus far. However, I am confident in my assessment of the car's flaws and believe that it is important to share my experience with others.

Great job commuting 120 miles per day!
