1996 Hyundai Accent problems
The Hyundai Accent (Korean: 현대 엑센트), or Hyundai Verna (현대 베르나) is a subcompact car produced by Hyundai. In Australia, the first generation models carried over the Hyundai Excel name used by the Accent's predecessor. The Accent was replaced in 2000 by the Hyundai Verna in South Korea, although most international markets, including the US, retained the "Accent" name. The "Accent" name is an abbreviation of Advanced Compact Car of Epoch-making New Technology.
The Accent is produced for the Chinese market by Beijing Hyundai Co., a joint venture with Beijing Automotive Industry Corp. For the Russian market it was assembled by the TagAZ plant in Taganrog until 2011, and since 2011 it was assembled by the HMMR plant in Saint Petersburg and sold under the new name Hyundai Solaris. In Mexico, the Accent was marketed until 2014 by Chrysler as the Dodge Attitude, previously known as the Verna by Dodge. In Venezuela, Chrysler marketed these models as the Dodge Brisa until 2006. The Brisa was assembled by Mitsubishi Motors at its plant in Barcelona, Venezuela. Since 2002, the Accent had been the longest-running small family car sold in North America. In Puerto Rico, the second and third generations were sold as the Hyundai Brio.
In 2008, Hyundai Accent was named the most dependable subcompact car by J.D. Power and Associates.

Common 1996 Hyundai Accent problems
The 1996 Hyundai Accent is a subcompact car that has been known for its reliability and affordability. However, some common problems have been reported by owners of this car, which are worth noting.
One of the most common problems with the 1996 Hyundai Accent is transmission failure. This issue can cause gear slipping, clunking sounds when the gears are engaged, and the inability to shift gears. The potential causes for transmission failure include incompatible transmission fluid, incorrect shift cable positioning, internal mechanic failure, a clogged filter, or a malfunctioning computer system. Transmission replacements for the Hyundai Accent can range from $1,800 to $3,400, which can be a significant expense for owners.
Another common problem with the 1996 Hyundai Accent is minor engine issues. These issues can include engine troubles and transmission failures, which can be costly and time-consuming to repair.
In terms of reliability, the 1996 Hyundai Accent has been rated highly by consumers, with many reporting that the car met their needs and was dependable. However, some owners have reported issues with the transmission, which can be a significant problem.
It is important to note that the 1996 Hyundai Accent is no longer in production, and any repairs or maintenance will need to be done on a car that is at least 24 years old. This can make finding replacement parts more difficult and potentially more expensive.
In conclusion, while the 1996 Hyundai Accent has been known for its reliability and affordability, some common problems have been reported by owners, including transmission failure and minor engine issues. It is important for potential buyers to be aware of these issues and to consider the age and potential maintenance costs of the car before making a purchase.

1996 Hyundai Accent recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 1996 Hyundai Accent.
- Manufacturer: HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER ARM
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN, AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. DURING WINTER MONTHS, LARGE QUANTITIES OF SALT ARE USED TO DE-ICE ROADS. THIS ROAD SALT COULD RESULT IN CORROSION OF THE FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARMS.
- Consequence: SEVERE CORROSION COULD RESULT IN PERFORATION AND POTENTIAL FRACTURE OF THE FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM. IF THIS FRACTURE OCCURS, THE TIRE AND WHEEL ASSEMBLY REMAINS CONNECTED TO THE CHASSIS THROUGH THE FORWARD LOWER CONTROL ARM PIVOT POINT AND THROUGH THE STRUT ATTACHMENT TO THE UPPER WHEELHOUSE. REDUCED CONTROL OF THE FRONT WHEEL LOCATION INCREASES THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARMS AND, IF NECESSARY, WILL REPLACE ONE OR BOTH FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARMS IF STRUCTURAL DAMAGE HAS OCCURRED. OWNER NOTIFICATION WILL BEGIN ON JUNE 10, 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT HYUNDAI AT 1-800-633-5151.
- Manufacturer: HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:SPRINGS:COIL SPRINGS
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE FOLLOWING "SALT BELT" STATES: CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WEST VIRGINIA, AND WISCONSIN. DURING WINTER MONTHS, THE ROAD SALT USED TO DE-ICE ROADS CAN RESULT IN CORROSION THAT CAUSES PITS TO FORM ON THE LOWER COIL OF THE FRONT SPRINGS ALLOWING CRACKS TO DEVELOP. THIS CAN RESULT IN BREAKAGE OF THE LOWER SPRING COIL.
- Consequence: IF THE FRONT COIL SPRING BREAKS, IT CAN BECOME DISPLACED FROM ITS SEATED POSITION, AND CAN CONTACT A TIRE. TIRE DAMAGE CAN RESULT.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A SPRING GUIDE TO PREVENT A BROKEN COIL SPRING FROM CONTACTING AND DAMAGING A TIRE.
- Manufacturer: HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA
- Components: VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER:MOTOR
- Summary: THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR CIRCUIT BREAKER ELECTRICAL CONTACTS WERE CONTAMINATED DURING ASSEMBLY.
- Consequence: THIS CONTAMINATION INTERFERES WITH THE ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT CONTINUITY AND PREVENTS THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR FROM OPERATING. INOPERATIVE WINDSHIELD WIPERS CAN CONTRIBUTE TO REDUCED VISIBILITY DURING INCLEMENT WEATHER INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE CONTAMINANTS FROM THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR CIRCUIT BREAKER CONTACTS.
- Manufacturer: HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER ARM
- Summary: THROUGH CONTACT WITH ROAD HAZARDS AND CURBS, THE LOWER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY CAN SHIFT FROM ITS ORIGINAL POSITION.
- Consequence: THE SHIFTED LOCATION CAN RESULT IN IMPROPER WHEEL ALIGNMENT AND INCREASED STEERING EFFORT INCREASING THE POTENTIAL FOR A VEHICLE ACCIDENT.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REINFORCE THE LOWER CONTROL ARM MEMBER ASSEMBLY ATTACHMENT TO THE UNDERBODY.

This car is perfect for short distance commutes. It's amazing that you've put 43k miles on it since 1996 and it's still in shiny, new, excellent condition! The longest drive you've taken it on was to Las Vegas, and you even did a single 7-hour drive without turning off the engine. The fuel consumption is excellent, getting about 37-40 on the highway when using the economy gear option.
-
Hey there! Did you know that the car actually uses a Mitsubishi engine? And the best part is, it's super easy to customize! Most people don't realize that it's actually a pretty fast car, especially considering it's a Hyundai. Plus, it's much cheaper to maintain than other cars and if you're interested in speed, it's also cheap to boost. Pretty cool, right?
-
I'm glad to hear that you've had such positive experiences with your 250 and 3500 mile trips! It's great to know that you've found it comfortable and fuel-efficient, and that you haven't encountered any major mechanical issues since purchasing it new.
-
This is a great car! It has surprising performance, is very sure-footed, and has ample power. However, it can be a bit uncomfortable if you plan on taking it out of town.
-
What a great story! You bought your car in 1996 with a salvage title and only 2811 miles on it for 3K. You replaced a few body parts, painted them, and put it to use. You took great care of it by changing fluids religiously and doing regular maintenance. The first set of brakes were replaced at 104K, the alternator at 170K, and after 23 years, you donated it at 183K with the original clutch. Even without AC, you regularly got 44mpg in the summer months. It ran like a go-cart and never dripped a speck of fluid under it. It's no wonder you consider it the best car ever, it never left you stranded!

My little car that could. I've had it for almost 8 years from new and it has been great! It drove like a dream for the first 5 years, and even though it had two major repairs after that (when it rains it pours) - the engine head and computer went out - it never had any small problems at all! I couldn't bring myself to trade it in because no other car could match its versatility or gas mileage. I got 33MPG on mixed driving. I will miss you!
Sven Thompson 2024-09-08
You made a great choice with this car! It was purchased used with only 33K on the odometer and has proven to be reliable and dependable. You've taken good care of it by changing the oil, tires, and brakes, as well as keeping up with regular maintenance.
Tyler Yost 2024-08-27
I strongly advise against purchasing this car. Despite its initial appearance and seemingly good performance, it quickly became apparent that the vehicle was in poor condition. Even after replacing the engine with an identical one, sourced from a junkyard car, the same issues persisted. Fortunately, I was able to sell the car while it was still operational. In my experience, this car was one of the worst I have ever owned.
Junior Okuneva 2024-07-09
Be careful not to have a blowout on the front tire as it can cause damage to your front bumper, fender, and wiring harness. This can be very dangerous, especially since the wiring harness is located so close to the front tire. On the bright side, this car is great on gas mileage, achieving up to 40 mpg on the highway and an average of 28 mpg in the city. However, personally, I would not buy this car again.
Jesus Morar 2024-05-10
Your car is a simple, no-frills model with few options. It has been quite reliable and cheap to drive. Although the transmission began to slip after 11 years, overall it has been a good purchase. The seats are average at best and the transmission has always been a little rough in shifting.
