The Hyundai Accent (Korean: 현대 엑센트), or Hyundai Verna (현대 베르나) is a subcompact car produced by Hyundai. In Australia, the first generation models carried over the Hyundai Excel name used by the Accent's predecessor. The Accent was replaced in 2000 by the Hyundai Verna in South Korea, although most international markets, including the US, retained the "Accent" name. The "Accent" name is an abbreviation of Advanced Compact Car of Epoch-making New Technology.

The Accent is produced for the Chinese market by Beijing Hyundai Co., a joint venture with Beijing Automotive Industry Corp. For the Russian market it was assembled by the TagAZ plant in Taganrog until 2011, and since 2011 it was assembled by the HMMR plant in Saint Petersburg and sold under the new name Hyundai Solaris. In Mexico, the Accent was marketed until 2014 by Chrysler as the Dodge Attitude, previously known as the Verna by Dodge. In Venezuela, Chrysler marketed these models as the Dodge Brisa until 2006. The Brisa was assembled by Mitsubishi Motors at its plant in Barcelona, Venezuela. Since 2002, the Accent had been the longest-running small family car sold in North America. In Puerto Rico, the second and third generations were sold as the Hyundai Brio.

In 2008, Hyundai Accent was named the most dependable subcompact car by J.D. Power and Associates.

  • VIN: KMHCN46CX9U
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: "HYUNDAI RECALL" A COUPLE YEARS AGO I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND MY DRIVER SIDE SUN VISOR FELL DOWN AND BLOCKED MY VIEW OF DRIVING. IT WAS AN UNCOMFORTABLE SITUATION BECAUSE I HAD TO HOLD UP THE VISOR WHILE I WAS DRIVING THE REST OF THE WAY HOME, THANKFULLY IT WAS NOT A MUCH MORE DANGEROUS SITUATION. EVENTUALLY WHEN I GOT HOME, I TRIED TO FIX IT MYSELF, AND IT HELD UP FOR A WHILE, BUT EVENTUALLY FELL OFF AGAIN, SO I ENDED UP HAVING TO RIP IT OFF ALTOGETHER SINCE IT WAS SUCH AN IMPAIRMENT WHILST DRIVING. A FEW MONTHS LATER THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO THE LEFT SIDE VISOR AND LUCKILY I WAS AT MY GRANDPAS HOUSE AND HE FIGURED OUT HOW TO TAKE THE VISOR OFF WITHOUT RIPPING IT OFF, SO THE WIRING CLIPS ARE STILL INTACT. NOW THAT I AM MORE KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT CARS I WAS JUST GOING TO BUY NEW VISORS AND TRY TO FIX THE PROBLEM MYSELF, BUT THEY ARE OUT OF MY PRICE RANGE, AND FRANKLY THIS IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE THAT HYUNDAI SHOULD PAY TO FIX. AFTER DOING SOME LOOKING ONLINE, I DISCOVERED THAT THERE ARE MANY OTHER DISSATISFIED HYUNDAI CUSTOMERS THAT HAVE HAD THE SAME SAFETY ISSUE WITH THE SUN VISOR. ALL I WANT IS FOR HYUNDAI TO FIX THE PROBLEM AT THEIR EXPENSE.

2009 Hyundai Accent recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2009 Hyundai Accent.

2015-09-08
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor America
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
  • Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2009-2011 Hyundai Accent vehicles manufactured March 1, 2009, to February 11, 2011. In the affected vehicles, the brake light switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning brake light switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning brake light switch may also prevent the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position.
  • Consequence: Failure to illuminate the brake lights during braking or the inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake switch, free of charge. The recall began on October 21, 2015. Owners may contact Hyundai's customer service at 1-855-671-3059 or by visiting www.HyundaiUSA.com/Campaign131. Hyundai's number for this recall is 131. This recall is an expansion of 13V-113.
2013-04-01
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
  • Summary: Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
  • Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.

Negative 2009 Hyundai Accent car reviews

  1. Reed Schoen 2024-10-15

Hi there! It's great to share that I've been driving my trusty Hyundai Accent since August 2009. I've been taking it for regular checkups at the dealership and it's been performing really well. Before this, I've driven other cars like the Toyota Corolla, Nissan Sentra, and Kia Spectra, which are bigger sedans compared to the Accent. I'm proud to say that I have a clean driving record too! However, I have noticed that the car tends to slip during poor weather conditions, especially when there's a layer of snow on the ground. I think the main concern here is the tires, as I've had three burst tires since I bought this car. Thanks for listening!

  2. Chris Lind 2024-09-16

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the Accent. Even though I didn't buy one like everyone else, I did get the chance to drive it for a long distance over a summer weekend. I have to say, I was really impressed! The dark blue color made the Accent look really handsome, and even though my renter didn't have many options, the CD player, AC, and automatic transmission were all great. Speaking of the CD player, it was really impressive! For a car that's priced around 13k, I was surprised by how quiet it was, how well it absorbed bumps, and how great the pickup and handling were. The Accent really rivals cars outside of its price class. The only downside was that it didn't have ABS, which made me a bit nervous when I had to do a panic stop in the rain. Overall, though, I had a great time driving the Accent and would definitely recommend it to others!

  3. Barrett Weissnat 2024-09-06

The elimination of the rear wiper and the addition of the rear spoiler have made it difficult to see out the rear window when it is raining or snowing while driving, which is a significant safety issue. Additionally, I was wondering why XM Radio was included when OnStar would make more sense. Furthermore, the rear spoiler can be quite noisy, especially when the wind is blowing. I have also experienced difficulty with tire wear on all of the Hyundai vehicles I have owned, which is a bit disappointing. Lastly, I have noticed that the gas mileage is not as good as I had hoped, as I was getting better mileage with my Elantra. The small size of the gas tank is also a bit of a letdown.

  4. Jesse Hamill 2024-07-04

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Hyundai car that I bought used a little over 2 years ago. Despite the high mileage, I trusted the Hyundai brand and got it for a great price. However, I've been having some trouble with the car's fuel efficiency lately. While I was getting 26 mpg on the street, I was nowhere close to the advertised 35 mpg on the highway. Then in April, my mileage suddenly dropped and now I only average 20 mpg, which is 200 miles per tank. It's been tough to afford driving the car lately. I reached out to Hyundai and they suggested taking it to their service department. I've already spent over $500 trying to figure out the issue, but the only thing left to try is the fuel consumption test, which I'm currently saving up for. Thanks for listening!

  5. Maxwell Tromp 2024-07-03

I needed a second car, so we decided to buy something small and fuel-efficient. The most important factor for me was fuel economy, and I did not prioritize other comforts. After two months, I have to admit that the economy is good, especially when I am not speeding (averaging 50 mph), as the Accent is doing about 37 mpg! I read editor's reviews here on Edmunds and knew that the Accent is not a speed demon, but I am fine with this. Overall, the car is okay and worth the money I paid, but I would suggest a couple of improvements: 1) a smaller engine (1.4l) to beat Toyota in fuel efficiency, and 2) Hyundai should work on the gear stick as it is not smooth and is hard to change gears in manuals.

Positive 2009 Hyundai Accent car reviews

  1. Glennie Mitchell 2025-01-06

This car is a great value for your money! Not only does it look good, but it's also fun and easy to drive. It has everything you need, and the automatic transmission is a nice change from having to shift in traffic. The car corners easily and has good performance all around. There's plenty of room in both the front and back, and the controls are easy to reach and operate. I couldn't find anything that I didn't like about this vehicle! I compared it to two other vehicles in the same class, and in the end, the Accent won out. The GS 2-door hatchback with the auto trans/ac package is a fantastic buy. Compare it, and you'll see! I had a very minor issue with a 'rattle,' and the dealer took care of it quickly.

  2. Myles Erdman 2024-11-29

I purchased my Accent a few months ago and I am really enjoying driving it more and more each day. The car is loaded with features which is great. However, I have noticed a few issues that I would like to address. Firstly, the cruise control hesitates when first set. Secondly, the transmission downshifts at the slightest incline which can be a bit unpredictable. Thirdly, it spits out gas at the end of every fill-up no matter how slowly I fill it. Lastly, I have noticed that I only get 25 MPG in town and 30 MPG at 75 mph on the freeway despite being a very slow driver. As I purchased this car used, I am a bit concerned that it may have been damaged. Although, it did have a clear carfax.

  3. Misael Abbott 2024-10-04

After using the car for 4 months and driving 4,737 miles, I used only 122.75 gallons of gas, achieving an impressive 39mpg (rounded up from 38.59mpg for the JD Powers survey). I am very pleased with this car, which I believe is the least expensive car sold in America. My son thinks that Korea is building the best cars for the price, just like the Japanese companies did when they first started. I have driven other cars in the past, including a sporty Cadillac and a Mercedes that I owned in 1970, but I find this car to be a steal. I did not opt for AC, but I still find it to be a great value for the price.

  4. Sherwood Rowe 2024-10-02

This has been a great car! It runs amazing and drives like the day I bought it. It has never let me down. It's the best car I've ever owned!

  5. Arturo Emard 2024-09-16

I was really happy with my purchase. This little car gets decent gas mileage (I drive 100 miles a day). I would like to get more MPG. I was a bit concerned to find some body rust that wasn't noticed when the car was being detailed for my purchase. The sport suspension is really great here in the mountains.
