2005 Hyundai Accent problems

hyundai logo

The Hyundai Accent (Korean: 현대 엑센트), or Hyundai Verna (현대 베르나) is a subcompact car produced by Hyundai. In Australia, the first generation models carried over the Hyundai Excel name used by the Accent's predecessor. The Accent was replaced in 2000 by the Hyundai Verna in South Korea, although most international markets, including the US, retained the "Accent" name. The "Accent" name is an abbreviation of Advanced Compact Car of Epoch-making New Technology.

The Accent is produced for the Chinese market by Beijing Hyundai Co., a joint venture with Beijing Automotive Industry Corp. For the Russian market it was assembled by the TagAZ plant in Taganrog until 2011, and since 2011 it was assembled by the HMMR plant in Saint Petersburg and sold under the new name Hyundai Solaris. In Mexico, the Accent was marketed until 2014 by Chrysler as the Dodge Attitude, previously known as the Verna by Dodge. In Venezuela, Chrysler marketed these models as the Dodge Brisa until 2006. The Brisa was assembled by Mitsubishi Motors at its plant in Barcelona, Venezuela. Since 2002, the Accent had been the longest-running small family car sold in North America. In Puerto Rico, the second and third generations were sold as the Hyundai Brio.

In 2008, Hyundai Accent was named the most dependable subcompact car by J.D. Power and Associates.

Common 2005 Hyundai Accent problems

The Hyundai Accent, while generally reliable, has had some common problems reported by owners over the years. This article will focus on the 2005 model and its known issues.

  • Transmission Failure: Gear shifting should be a smooth experience, but some 2004 Hyundai Accent owners have complained about transmission failure in their vehicles. This issue may also affect the 2005 model, causing discomfort and inconvenience during driving.
  • Rust on Lower Suspension/Coil Spring: In areas where roads are heavily salted during the winter, rust may affect the lower suspension/coil spring, a recurring problem for the Accent over the years. This issue usually occurs around the 75,000-mile mark, which could affect the 2005 model if it has reached that mileage.
  • Sudden Stop of Sound from Speakers: Non-hybrid versions of the Hyundai Accent may suddenly stop playing sound from all speakers, a system bug that can be fixed with a hard reset by disconnecting the vehicle’s negative battery terminal for 15 minutes and reconnecting it again.
  • Boot Leak: The boot seal is prone to leaking on the Hyundai Accent, causing wet stains and damp carpets. If you notice a leak, you will need to replace the boot seal to stop the leak and dry out the carpets to avoid any dampness setting in.
  • Ignition Coil Failure: The ignition coil is known for failing on the Accent, causing the engine management warning light to appear on the dashboard and/or engine misfiring (poor idling). Replacing the ignition coil is recommended to resolve the issue.
  • Electric Window Problems: If you are having problems with the electric windows being very hesitant, it is usually caused by a faulty window regulator, which will require replacement.
  • Wing Mirrors Rusting: The wing mirrors on the Accent are prone to rusting, with the severity of the rust determining the action needed to resolve the problem.

These common problems with the Hyundai Accent 2005 model are based on complaints from owners of this car. It is important to be aware of these issues and address them promptly to ensure a safe and enjoyable driving experience.

Negative 2005 Hyundai Accent car reviews

  1. Tristin Lindgren 2024-11-14

I recently purchased my first foreign car and I must admit, it has been quite a challenge to learn all of its features. There are many buttons and levers on the steering column that can be overwhelming at first. Unfortunately, I had some warning lights come on and I wasn't sure how to turn them off or even what caused them to come on in the first place. It can be difficult to pull over and read the manual while driving, and there is a lot of information to remember. Additionally, some of the switches and knobs are not labeled, making it hard to know what they are for. For example, there is a warning light that I couldn't even begin to guess what it meant! Lastly, the gas tank is a bit small for my liking. Despite these challenges, I am determined to master all of the features and make the most of my new car. The seat belts can be a bit tricky to lock or unlock when the armrest is down, but I'm sure I'll get the hang of it soon.

  2. Luigi Krajcik 2024-10-18

This seems like a great first car, but there are a few things to consider. The backseat is a bit small, and larger people may feel cramped in the front. Additionally, the gas mileage is only good if you stick to the highway. We're still trying to figure out why, but so far we're averaging just under 20mpg. The only other thing to note is that the vehicle doesn't have ABS brakes.

  3. Roel Kris 2024-05-25

I've had my 2005 Accent for just over a year now and put over 20,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, my old Toyota finally gave up on me, and I needed a car as soon as possible for my pizza delivery job. I ended up getting this car because it was the only one I could get financed on. However, it didn't come with an owner's manual, and I've had to take it in for repairs three times already. Now, they're telling me that I have to change the timing belt every six months, which costs $500 each time. It's tough to afford this on a minimum wage job, and I'm feeling a bit of buyer's remorse.

  4. Brad Turner 2024-05-21

Firstly, within the first 12,000 miles, I had to go to the dealership three times because of my spark plugs. Then, after about 10,000 more miles, I had to get them replaced again. Unfortunately, they didn't fix it right the first time. Secondly, I am still having problems. I just had my transmission fixed for 500 bucks, which was only covered in the extended warranty, and it's still not fixed. It tends to accelerate and drop speed between 60-75. I reported this to the dealership, but they have no idea what I am talking about, so I have to bring it back in. On a side note, my friend has the same car, and his driver's door doesn't lock anymore. Her boyfriend has a 2-door Accent (both '05), and his interior lights don't work.

  5. Carmine Franecki 2024-05-08

I was a fairly new driver when I got this car, but unfortunately it just isn't the right fit for me. I had a great experience with my previous car, a Chevy Cavalier, so maybe I'm comparing them unfairly. However, I've noticed that the engine struggles to accelerate and the dashboard is quite plain and boring. Additionally, the Sony Explode system I installed makes the car vibrate excessively. As a tall person, I've found that the limited legroom in the backseat can be a challenge. Overall, I would only recommend this car as a starter vehicle for a young driver. The only positive aspect of this car is its impressive MPG of about 30. I'm eagerly looking forward to upgrading to my 2010 Chevy Silverado! Remember to support American-made cars.

Positive 2005 Hyundai Accent car reviews

  1. Magnus Murray 2024-11-10

You should definitely consider buying this great economy car! It's fun to drive, has good ergonomics inside, and most notably, great passing power on the highway. I've been driving it for a month now and it has performed really well. If you're looking to save some money, the Accent is a great option as it can save you between 2-4k easily +Interest compared to the Honda Civic. The transmission shifts much better than anticipated and doesn't hunt for gears. Hill climbing has been a breeze so far. The trunk is surprisingly large for a car of this size. Hyundai has really stepped up their game and their products are now 80% as good as Honda and Toyota but cost less. Although the interior is a bit bland, it's still nice and comfortable.

This is my 3rd Hyundai. It's always been a reliable choice for me, with excellent fuel economy. It's the perfect vehicle for my daily commute.

I'm so glad to hear that you have no regrets about your purchase of the Accent! While it may not be a luxury car, it's certainly economical, reliable, and enjoyable to drive. It's amazing how much you can pack inside such a small car, and the spacious trunk storage is a definite plus. I can understand your frustration with the lack of an interior armrest and clock on the dash, but it sounds like those are minor inconveniences compared to the overall satisfaction you have with your little car. It's great to hear that it provides you with cheap and reliable transportation, and that you enjoy driving it!

Great mileage! You won't believe it, but I've already put 5,000 miles on this car in just a few months and I'm averaging 32MPG. It's exactly what I need with gas prices expected to hit $2.50/Gal this summer. I'm really happy with the warranty and the low entry price.

Great car! It has more power than I expected.
