The Hyundai Accent (Korean: 현대 엑센트), or Hyundai Verna (현대 베르나) is a subcompact car produced by Hyundai. In Australia, the first generation models carried over the Hyundai Excel name used by the Accent's predecessor. The Accent was replaced in 2000 by the Hyundai Verna in South Korea, although most international markets, including the US, retained the "Accent" name. The "Accent" name is an abbreviation of Advanced Compact Car of Epoch-making New Technology.

The Accent is produced for the Chinese market by Beijing Hyundai Co., a joint venture with Beijing Automotive Industry Corp. For the Russian market it was assembled by the TagAZ plant in Taganrog until 2011, and since 2011 it was assembled by the HMMR plant in Saint Petersburg and sold under the new name Hyundai Solaris. In Mexico, the Accent was marketed until 2014 by Chrysler as the Dodge Attitude, previously known as the Verna by Dodge. In Venezuela, Chrysler marketed these models as the Dodge Brisa until 2006. The Brisa was assembled by Mitsubishi Motors at its plant in Barcelona, Venezuela. Since 2002, the Accent had been the longest-running small family car sold in North America. In Puerto Rico, the second and third generations were sold as the Hyundai Brio.

In 2008, Hyundai Accent was named the most dependable subcompact car by J.D. Power and Associates.

In summary, the 2002 Hyundai Accent has several common problems, primarily related to the engine, power train, fuel system, and airbags. These issues can range from minor inconveniences to significant repairs, and the severity of the problem can vary depending on the individual car and its maintenance history.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-08-01
  • VIN: KMHCG35C02U
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Purchased car 2002 in Arizona. About 2009 when the check engine light came on and when filling the car with gas the pump would stop after less than .25 gallons pumped. It takes greater than 20 minutes to fill the tank and many times the auto shut off fails and I end up being sprayed gasoline. This is a personal safety issue as well as an enviromental hazard. There are many similar complaints about this issue, but it is repeatedly ignored. What will get this addressed, some one being seriously injured after being doused with gasoline?

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-05-24
  • VIN: KMHCG45C02U
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: WHEN PUTTING GAS IN THE CAR, THE FUEL PUMP CLICKS OFF EVERY 10 CENTS OR SO AS IF THE TANK IS FULL BUT IT IS NOT. SOMETIMES THE GAS OVEN RUNS BACK OUT OF THE TANK AS IF IT IS OVERFILLED AND RUNNING OVER, BUT IT IS NOT. I LIVE IN NJ, WHICH IS ONE OF THE TWO STATES THAT HAVE FULL SERVICE GAS STATIONS. AND GAS STATION ATTENDANTS CONSTANTLY TELL ME THAT THEY ENCOUNTER THIS PROBLEM SPECIFICALLY WITH HYUNDAI'S ALL THE TIME! THEY HAVE TOLD ME THAT THEY HAVE ALSO SEEN THIS WITH BRAND NEW HYUNDAI MODELS AS WELL, SO IT'S NOT A PROBLEM THAT HAS IMPROVED OVER THE YEARS SINCE MY DATED 2002 MODEL. EVEN THE SERVICE TECH AT MY LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP WAS ALL TOO FAMILIAR WITH THIS DEFECT WIDELY KNOWN WITH HYUNDAI'S WHEN I SPOKE TO HIM. HE ALSO QUOTED ME A PRICE AROUND $600, WHICH HE SAID FROM HIS EXPERIENCE AS A TECHNICIAN DOESN'T GUARANTEE THE PROBLEM TO BE FIXED. THERE ARE CASES OF THE PROBLEM COMING BACK AFTER THE REPAIR IS DONE! I CONTACTED HYUNDAI WITH MY CONCERNS AND TO SPECIFICALLY ASK WHY THIS WIDELY KNOWN DEFECT WAS NOT RECALLED AND I DID NOT GET A REAL ANSWER TO MY QUESTION. I HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH THIS PROBLEM FOR SOME TIME. AND LOOKING AT SOME OF THE OTHER COMPLAINTS FILED, PLUS THE PEOPLE I'VE TALKED TO (INCLUDING HYUNDAI EMPLOYEES), THEY HAVE KNOWN ABOUT THIS COMMON PROBLEM, BUT REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE IT AS A DEFECT AND FIX THE ISSUE. VERY FRUSTRATING.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

IT'S VERY ANNOYING AND IT IS DIFFICULT TO PASS INSPECTION. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY HYUNDAI SHOULD NOT BE REQUIRED TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. IT COMES UP AS A 1401 FOR EMISSIONS TESTING

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-04-20
  • VIN: KMHCG45C92U
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: I HAD JUST GOTTEN OFF INTERSTATE 76 AT ROUTE 14 AFTER DRIVING THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT OF 70 MPH. I CAME DOWN THE RAMP AND AS I APPLIED THE BRAKES, THE FRONT LEFT WHEEL LOCKED UP. THANK GOD IT DIDN'T HAPPEN ON INTERSTATE 76. THE TRAFFIC WAS VERY HEAVY WITH SEMI'S ALL AROUND ALONG WITH REGULAR TRAFFIC. I COME TO FIND OUT THE FRONT LEFT LOWER CONTROL ARM COLLAPSED ALLOWING THE TIRE TO COME BACK AGAINST THE LEFT FENDER WHEEL WELL. IT PULLED THE CAR TO THE LEFT AND I SLID OFF THE RAMP ONTO THE BERM AFTER TRYING TO STEER HARD TO RIGHT. I HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED. I'VE OWNED THE CAR SINCE JULY 14, 2014. I COME TO FIND OUT THE RIGHT ARM HAS ALREADY BEEN REPLACED. WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR, IT HAD 80,362 MILES. IN TODAYS WORLD, THAT IS LOW MILES. IF THIS HAD HAPPENED WHEN I WAS TRAVELING AT 70 MPH, SOMEONE COULD HAVE GOTTEN KILLED. HOW MANY MORE ARE RUNNING AROUND LIKE THIS. THE BALL JOINTS APPEAR TO BE GOOD BUT THE CONTROL ARM RUSTED OUT TO THE POINT OF WEAKNESS AND COLLAPSED. THE CAR DOESN'T EVEN HAVE 100,000 MILES ON IT. THEY NEED TO RECALL ALL OF THESE CARS AND HAVE THE CONTROL ARMS INSPECTED. YOU CANNOT CONTROL THE CAR EVEN AT 10 MPH. *TR

SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-02-14
  • Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I GOT AN ALIGNMENT AND ALL NEW TIRES. I WAS PULLED IN THE GARAGE TO FIND OUT THERE WAS RUST HOLES IN THE FRONT END OF THE FRAME BELOW THE ENGINE. I LOOKED UP RECALLS AND THERE HAD BEEN OVER 500,000 COUNTS OF DAMAGE TO MULTIPLE DIFFERENT YEARS AND MODELS. NONE OF WHICH INCLUDED MINE. I LIVE IN NY STAGE WHERE ROADS ARE HEAVILY SALTED FOR SAFETY. THE CAR HAS 158,000 MILES ON IT AND SHOULDN'T HAVE 6 INCH HOLES IN THE FRAME. I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO PAY TO GET MY FRAME REBUILT WHEN THIS SHOULD BE TAKEN CARE OF BY HYUNDAI. I WAS TOLD BY MULTIPLE PEOPLE TO CONTACT YOU IF THE DEALERSHIP COULDN'T DO ANYTHING. I RESEARCHED ENOUGH TO ALSO FIND OUT IT WAS REQUIRED BY THE GOVERNMENT TO FIX ANY PROBLEM RELATING TO THE PROBLEM I AM HAVING. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Summary: PULLED INTO THE PARKING LOT. I WENT TO PUT IT IN PARK, BUT THE CAR WOULD ONLY GO IN REVERSE. I WAS GOING FORWARD IN DRIVE AT THE TIME. IT STARTED GOING IN REVERSE. NO MATTER WHAT GEAR I TRIED, IT WOULD ONLY GO IN REVERSE. I COULDN'T TURN OFF THE CAR. I KEPT TRYING TO PUT IT IN PARK AND EVENTUALLY IT WORKED. THIS CAR IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS SAME PROBLEM ON LINE. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THIS HAS NOT BEEN RECALLED. *TR

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-04-10
  • VIN: KMHCG45C72U
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: I WAS ON A SIDE STREET, THANK GOD. ON MY WAY TO THE HIGHWAY WHEN I HEARD A HORRIBLE SCRATCHING, METAL CRUNCHING NOISE. I HAD A HARD TIME STEERING WHEN I PULLED INTO A PARKING LOT MY CAR JUST STOPPED. I LOOKED, AND MY TIRE WAS SIDEWAYS, THE RIGHT LOWER CONTROL ARM ROTTED AND BROKE, THE AXLE CAME OUT OF THE TRANSMISSION. I SPOKE TO HYUNDAI AND THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO. I RECENTLY LOST MY JOB AND WOULD LIKE TO BE REIMBURSED FOR THIS. IF I WOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE HIGHWAY I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED AND CAUSED A HUGE ACCIDENT, DUE TO NOT BEING ABLE TO TURN MY WHEEL. I WANT TO KNOW WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT THIS PLEASE. THERE WAS A RECALL DUE TO THIS SAME EXACT REASON AND IT IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE. *JS

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-08-01
  • VIN: KMHCG45C82U
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: MY 2002 HYUNDAI ACCENT "CLICKS OFF" REPEATEDLY WHEN ATTEMPTING TO REFUEL THE VEHICLE. GASOLINE POOLS IN THE CHAMBER BETWEEN THE FUEL DOOR AND THE GAS TANK CAUSING A SERIOUS HAZARD. FUEL SMELLS ARE FREQUENTLY OBSERVED WITHIN THE CAR AFTER FUELING AND FOR A PERIOD OF DAYS AFTERWARD. THE "CHECK ENGINE" REMAINS ILLUMINATED INDICATING A FUEL LINE SYSTEM. I HAVE HAD THE SYSTEM CHECKED BY A FULL SERVICE AUTOMOTIVE FACILITY AND THEY HAVE REPLACED SEVERAL PARTS WITH NO SUCCESS IN REMEDYING THE PROBLEM. HAVE SUGGESTED POSSIBLY REPLACING THE ENTIRE FULL LINE, GAS TANK, ETC BUT HAVE INDICATED THIS IS LIKELY A MANUFACTURER DEFECT THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED AS SUCH. AT THE CURRENT TIME IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO PUT MORE THAN A FEW OUNCES OF GASOLINE INTO THE CAR AT ANY ONE TIME AND FAILURE TO CLOSELY MONITOR THE CHAMBER WHILE ATTEMPTING TO REFUEL CAN LEAD TO GASOLINE OVERFLOW AND SPILLS. I HAVE SIGNIFICANT CONCERNS AS TO THE SAFETY OF FUELING THIS CAR ON A WEEKLY BASIS AS WELL AS THE RISK OF FIRE HAZARD SHOULD ANY TYPE OF REAR-END COLLISION OCCUR WITH THIS VEHICLE. FROM MY RESEARCH THIS APPEARS TO BE A FAIRLY COMMON OCCURRENCE WITH THIS MODEL/YEAR OF HYUNDAI, INCLUDING AT LOW MILEAGE POINTS. CONCERNED THAT HYUNDAI HAS NOT ADDRESSED WHAT APPEARS TO BE A SERIOUS ISSUE FOR SAFETY. *TR

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-05-05
  • VIN: KMHCF35G02U
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: WHILE I HAVE FELT THAT I HAVE BEEN LEADING UP TO THE PROBLEM THAT I AM ABOUT TO LIST FOR OVER A YEAR WITH WHINING IN THE FRONT LEFT TIRE/BRAKE AREA. I AM GETTING READY FOR MY FOURTH BRAKES ON MY ACCENT IN THE PAST 18 MONTHS. FINALLY IN MAY OF THIS YEAR (2013) I STARTED NOTICING THAT WHEN I WOULD PRESS IN THE CLUTCH THE CAR WOULD SLOW AS IF THE BRAKES WERE BEING PRESSED. WE TOOK THE CAR TO OUR SHOP AND THEY REPLACED THE WHEEL BEARING AND BRAKES, BRAKE LINES, MASTER CYLINDER, OR AS THE MECHANIC SAYS:, "WE HAVE REPLACED EVERYTHING THAT WE KNOW TO REPLACE OR REPAIR FOR THIS PROBLEM". WELL TODAY, 08/15/2013 I MANAGED TO GET MY CAR TO THE MECHANIC FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. THIS CAR HAS NEVER BEEN WRECKED, I AM THE SECOND OWNER, MY SISTER-IN-LAW AND HER HUSBAND WERE THE ORIGINAL OWNERS. THIS CAR WAS PURCHASED IN INDIANAPOLIS OFF OF THE LOT BY THEM. *TR

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-02-28
  • VIN: KMHCG35C9ZU
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: THE GAS TANK WILL NOT ACCEPT FUEL AT A REASONABLE FLOW FROM A PUMP. IT TRIPS THE SHUT OFF EARLY. SOMETIMES FUEL SPLASHES OUT WHEN THIS HAPPENS. MANY HYUNDAI CARS HAVE THIS PROBLEM. FROM RESEARCH, I FOUND THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS: 1) CHARCOAL BITS IN THE VENT LINES FROM THE CARBON CANISTER- ONE OWNER CUT OPEN THE CANISTER AND FOUND A FOAM FILTER LIKE IN A WINDOW A/C THAT WAS DAMAGED BY GAS ALLOWING CARBON TO GO INTO THE VENT LINES CLOGGING THEM AND NOT ALLOWING THE TANK TO VENT. INCOMPATABLE MATERIAL USED. 2) FAULTY CHECK VALVE AT THE INLET OF THE GAS TANK DOES NOT OPEN FULLY WHEN REFUELING CAUSING GAS TO BACK UP THE FILLER NECK. 3) DEFECTIVE "SAMPLING PUMP". THIS IS IN THE VENT SYSTEM BETWEEN THE FUEL FILLER PIPE AND THE REAR BUMPER. PUMP DOES NOT OPERATE WHEN IT SHOULD. 4) SMALL FILLER TUBE. GAS PUMP NOZZLES IN THE UK HAD TO BE CHANGED TO A SMALLER SIZE SO THAT THERE COULD BE SOME VENTING. THE VENT LINES IN MY CAR SEEM CLEAR. I AM CHANGING THE CHECK VALVE, AND I WILL SEE IF THIS IMPROVES THE SITUATION. IT ALSO SEEMS THAT THE HYUNDAI DEALERS DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM AND WHAT CAUSES IT. *TR

THIS IS NOT ONLY DANGEROUS TO MYSELF BUT ALSO DANGEROUS TO EVERY PERSON IN THE AREA. I FEEL THIS IS A DANGER TO EVERYONE AND NEEDS TO B ADDRESSED. *TR

THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE WHO DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE ALTHOUGH THE VEHICLE WAS UNDER WARRANTY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 69,012 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 69,100.UPDATED 11/01/12 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED THAT THE PUMP WOULD STOP FUELING AFTER 0.5 GALLONS OF GAS. THE CANISTER WAS REPLACED. THE FAILURE CONTINUED. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE DEALER THEN SUGGESTED TO CHANGE THE DMTC PUMP. IF THE RUBBER PIPE CONNECTED TO THE CANISTER IS REMOVED THE VEHICLE CAN THEN BE FUELED AS NORMAL. UPDATED 11/02/2012 *JS

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-11-01
  • VIN: KMHCG45C02U
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: FOR THE PAST 2 YEARS I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE SPEED SENSORS AND OXYGEN SENSORS, SEVERAL TIMES. I WAS TAKING TO MY MECHANIC BECAUSE PARTS WERE OUT OF WARRANTY, BUT MY MECHANIC STATED THAT IT IS A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM BECAUSE EVERY TIME I HAD CHIPS REPLACED MY TRANS FLUID WAS DIRTY AND HAD TO FLUSH AGAIN AND AGAIN. TOOK CAR TO DEALER, SAME CONCLUSION. HYUNDAI REFUSED TO REPLACE. FILED A COMPLAINT WITH HYUNDAI. HYUNDAI STATED THEY WERE NOT CONTACTED BY DEALER, THIS STATEMENT WAS LATER RETRACTED BY THEM. THEY ARE STILL REFUSING TO REPLACE MY TRANSMISSION. DID ALL SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE. MY CAR HAS ABOUT 77000 MILES AND IS ALMOST 10 YEARS. MY FUEL SYSTEM BEGAN ACTING UP EARLY 2011. CAN ONLY FILL TANK 1/4 GALLON EVERY 1MIN. THIS TAKES ME A VERY LONG TIME TO FIL1 TANK. DEALER GAVE ME A $1600 REPAIR ESTIMATE. I AM READING LITERALLY 1000'S OF COMPLAINTS ON BOTH ISSUES AND HYUNDAI REFUSES TO SPEAK ON THEM. THESE ARE DANGEROUS ISSUES: SENSOR CHIPS CAUSES CARS TO STALL, PARTICULARLY AT HIGH SPEEDS, IMAGINE BEING BEHIND SOMEONE GOING 60MPH AND THEN SUDDENLY THEIR CAR STALLS....CRASH WAITING TO HAPPEN AND THE FUELING ISSUE CAN INCREASE THE LIKELIHOOD OF CAR FIRES. IF THE GAS IS LEAKING OR SPILLING OUT DUE TO POOR WORKMANSHIP AND/OR DESIGN AND AN ACCIDENT OCCURS IGNITION OF GAS SPILLING OUTSIDE INCREASES, NOT TO MENTION ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS. THESE CARS COULD NOT PASS EMISSIONS TESTING. THE MAIN ISSUE IS THAT HYUNDAI IS MISSING IN ACTION AND REFUSES TO HONOR THEIR WARRANTIES. SHAME SHAME HYUNDAI. SAYING YOU OFFER A 10 YEAR WARRANTY AND ACTUALLY HONORING IT ARE 2 DIFFERENT THINGS. *TT

Negative 2002 Hyundai Accent car reviews

  1. Gonzalo Lowe 2024-11-20

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with this car. My mother actually picked it out new in 2002 and owned it for 5 years before generously giving it to me after my divorce left me a single mom without a vehicle. At the time, I thought the warranty was great and the price was right, and it seemed to have some get-up-and-go. However, since I've owned it, I've come to realize that it's not the best car out there. With 96K miles on it, it's going through oil, the engine light is perpetually on, and it won't pass emissions. Even without these obvious problems, in hilly western PA, I've had some scary moments with the handling of this vehicle due to its horrible steering and braking! But, I'm looking forward to the day when I can afford a new car. Thanks for listening!

For the price, this car is very serviceable. The drive is smooth and comfortable with decent acceleration. It may not go very fast - above 65 mph the engine sounds like it's working pretty hard. It's not too stable against strong cross winds. I would highly recommend it as a second car or as a commuter car that you don't care about putting a lot of miles on or getting dinged in parking lots.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Accent. I bought it brand new back in 09/01 and it has been a great investment. Even with 120,000 miles on it, I still get an impressive 38 mi/gal. I've only had a few minor issues, such as a broken door handle, power window cables that broke, and an ignition sensor that was fortunately covered under warranty. Currently, my only concern is a break/leak in the original exhaust due to 8 winters in Wisconsin. However, overall I've been very pleased with the quality of my Accent. I have been considering a replacement car due to our new baby, as putting a toddler into a car seat in the back has become quite tedious. While I wouldn't recommend the Accent for families of four, it is the perfect 1 or 2 person commuter car. Thanks for listening!

This was my first car, and while it has had its challenges, I have learned a lot from the experience. The first year was fine, but I have had some issues since then. The check engine light keeps coming on, even after the car has been worked on, and the back seat is a bit cramped. While a warranty would be helpful, the only dealership near me has not provided the best service. On the bright side, the gas mileage is great when the car is running smoothly, and the handling is decent on dry roads. However, it tends to fishtail on wet roads. The brakes can be a bit noisy, especially in the rain. Additionally, the car's performance is affected when the AC is on. Overall, I have had some challenges with this car, but I have also learned a lot and appreciate the experience.

I didn't actually choose this car, but even though my parents picked it out for me, I've been really happy with it. I've had it for a month now and it's been great - no problems at all. It's definitely a great car for the price and the warranty is a nice bonus.

This is such a fun vehicle to drive and it gets excellent gas mileage. I haven't had any trouble with it and I'm actually considering buying another Hyundai!

Hey there! If you negotiate with the dealer, you can get a brand new one of these for around 11,500 with Auto Trans. Despite being a small car, this little thing can really move when it needs to. The interior is fairly basic and compact, but I'm 6'1

I just bought a car and I'm already convinced it was a great decision. I'm getting almost 40 miles to the gallon and the car is fantastic. It has great acceleration for a small engine and is really fun to drive. I also noticed a little plastic button that was broken on the back hatch, but Hyundai took care of it in minutes without any questions. Their warranty is really reliable.

I've owned three Honda Civics before trying out the Accent. I was pleasantly surprised by how great it is. I can't imagine a better car for the price. It's loaded with more features than I would have ever expected. It's really peppy and runs like a champ (so far!). The Hyundai warranty is what sold me. If they are willing to stand by their products, I was willing to give it a try. I'm glad I did. It's a terrific around town car and even good for longer hauls. It's a great second family car (I have a Hyundai Santa Fe to do the real family hauling).

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just read your message about your daughter's new car and I'm so happy for you! It's great that you found a reliable car for her to drive to college. I noticed that you chose a Hyundai Accent, which is a fantastic choice. Not only is it affordable, but it also comes with a great warranty and roadside assistance. Your daughter's monthly payment of $175 is also very reasonable for a brand new car. It's no wonder you're considering getting a Hyundai for yourself next year! Thanks for sharing your experience with me.
