The Hyundai Accent (Korean: 현대 엑센트), or Hyundai Verna (현대 베르나) is a subcompact car produced by Hyundai. In Australia, the first generation models carried over the Hyundai Excel name used by the Accent's predecessor. The Accent was replaced in 2000 by the Hyundai Verna in South Korea, although most international markets, including the US, retained the "Accent" name. The "Accent" name is an abbreviation of Advanced Compact Car of Epoch-making New Technology.

The Accent is produced for the Chinese market by Beijing Hyundai Co., a joint venture with Beijing Automotive Industry Corp. For the Russian market it was assembled by the TagAZ plant in Taganrog until 2011, and since 2011 it was assembled by the HMMR plant in Saint Petersburg and sold under the new name Hyundai Solaris. In Mexico, the Accent was marketed until 2014 by Chrysler as the Dodge Attitude, previously known as the Verna by Dodge. In Venezuela, Chrysler marketed these models as the Dodge Brisa until 2006. The Brisa was assembled by Mitsubishi Motors at its plant in Barcelona, Venezuela. Since 2002, the Accent had been the longest-running small family car sold in North America. In Puerto Rico, the second and third generations were sold as the Hyundai Brio.

In 2008, Hyundai Accent was named the most dependable subcompact car by J.D. Power and Associates.

WIFE WAS BADLY BRUISED ON ARMS AND FACE AND WINDSHIELD WAS SHATTERED BY PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG COVER WHEN BAGS DEPLOYED. WE WERE FORTUNATE THAT SHE WAS NOT ON BUSY STREET OR ON INTERSTATE AS THIS WOULD HAVE CERTAINLY RESULTED IN A WRECK WITH SEVERE BODILY INJURY OR POSSIBLE DEATH. LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP (PERKINS MOTORS, COLORADO SPRINGS) REFUSED TO DO ANYTHING. HYUNDAI HQ CUSTOMER SERVICE COMMITTED TO "SENDING US A PACKET OF PAPERWORK TO BE FILLED OUT AND RETURNED TO THEM BY US AND THEY WOULD GET BACK TO US IN 6 TO 8 WEEKS ONCE IT WAS RECEIVED TO SEE IF THEY WOULD DO ANYTHING." NO ONE FROM HYUNDAI HAS EXPRESSED ANY INTEREST IN SEEING THE VEHICLE OR RESPONDING TO A POTENTIALLY VERY HAZARDOUS VEHICLE. I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THEIR LACK OF ANY SENSE OF OBLIGATION TO SEE WHAT WENT WRONG AND HOW IT MIGHT BE AVOIDED IN THE FUTURE. THEIR ATTITUDE IS THAT IT'S OUR PROBLEM AND THE FACT THAT IT IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE DOESN'T CONCERN THEM IN THE SLIGHTEST. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-05-01
  • VIN: KMHCG35C14U
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I OWN A 2004 HYUNDAI ACCENT. FOR THE PAST 3 YEARS THE TRANSMISSION HAS HAD SIGNIFICANT ISSUES. THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WILL RANDOMLY SLAM INTO A LOWER GEAR OR WILL GET STUCK IN A GEAR. THIS CAUSES SAFETY ISSUES DURING WINTER DRIVING BECAUSE THE VEHICLE LURCHES FORWARD AT TIMES WHEN SHIFTING. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO ENTER INTO TRAFFIC, THE CAR WILL BE STUCK IN 3 GEAR WHICH ALMOST HAS CAUSED AN ACCIDENT SEVERAL TIMES BY PULLING OUT TOO SLOW. I HAVE HAD IT IN TWICE TO THE TRANSMISSION SHOP AND THEY COULD NOT DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM WITHOUT AN ENGINE CODE. THEY FLUSHED, FILLED AND PUT A NEW FILTER IN THE TRANSMISSION BUT THIS DID NOT HELP. SOMETIMES THE CAR WILL WORK FINE FOR MONTHS OR A YEAR AT A TIME. I HAVE RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET AND THERE SEEMS TO BE MANY OWNERS THAT HAVE VOICED SIMILAR CONCERNS. *TR

I NOTICED THE BRAKES WERE GIVING RESISTANCE WHEN GOING FROM A STOP SO I SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT AT -RICK CASE HYUNDAI_ IN EUCLID, OH. THEY TOLD ME THAT THE BRAKES HAD TO BE "REBUILT" AND "LUBRICATED "EVERY 7500 MILES AND THAT THEY WOULD NOT REPAIR THE DAMAGE UNDER WARRANTY EVEN THOUGH I PROVIDED RECEIPTS SHOWING THAT THE REQUIRED WARRANTY INSPECTION/ADJUSTMENTS HAD BEEN MADE. I SHOULD ADD THAT MY FRIEND (SCOTT RUDGE) HAS A 2003 ACCENT WHICH HAD EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM AS MINE AT THE SAME MILEAGE (ABOUT 40,000). I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS CLEARLY A PROBLEM WITH EITHER THE DESIGN OR MANUFACTURE OF THE RIGHT FRONT CALIPER. *JB

Negative 2004 Hyundai Accent car reviews

  1. Alex Bednar 2025-01-09

Congratulations on considering buying this car! I'm happy to share that I've had a great experience with it so far. With 75,000 miles on the clock, I haven't had a single problem. All I've needed to do is change the oil and perform normal routine maintenance, such as new transmission fluid and timing belt. The highway mileage is fantastic, averaging about 33, although the city mileage is not as good, averaging about 20. While the car's appearance may be a bit bland and the resale value may not be the best, I highly recommend this car if you can find it for under 45,000 miles and under 7 thousand bucks. Thank you for considering my recommendation!

  2. Emanuel Doyle 2024-10-11

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with the Hyundai product I purchased. I've had some trouble with it and I think it might be a safety hazard, so I would recommend taking it off the market. Unfortunately, I've had some difficulty controlling it, especially at higher speeds, and I've had to spend quite a bit of time at the dealership. I don't feel like Hyundai has stood behind their product as much as they could have. Thanks for listening!

  3. Jeromy Dickinson 2024-08-12

This car model has proven to be unreliable and has required significant repairs, including the replacement of many original parts, despite having only 20000 miles on it. Based on my personal experience and that of my family, I strongly recommend against purchasing this car. Multiple issues have arisen, ranging from transmission problems to brake system failures, and even a faulty battery. It is my opinion that this car is not a wise investment.

  4. Santa Cremin 2024-05-12

I had a negative experience with my Accent GT, experiencing transmission troubles and valve issues while driving over the Blue Ridge mountains. As a result, I decided to trade it in after 8 months for a Jeep. While I appreciate the opportunity to try a Hyundai, I have since found a better fit for my needs.

  5. Ray Stanton 2024-04-07

I would definitely recommend this car to anyone looking for affordable transportation. I have not experienced any issues with this car since the day I purchased it. Although, I would suggest that Hyundai add more insulation as the ride can get a little noisy without the radio on.

It's great to hear that you're enjoying your new vehicle! From what you've shared, it sounds like you've had a positive experience so far. It's always exciting to have a car that handles well, has plenty of power, and good fuel economy. I hope that your new car continues to meet your expectations and that it serves you well for many years to come!

  2. Chesley Klocko 2024-11-06

When I got this car, I had my doubts because I have been driving Japanese nameplates all my life. However, this car surprised me. In just one month, I had no problems at all. The car is easy to drive and manoeuvre around tight situations, and the engine, automatic and suspension work beautifully together. It is also roomy for its size, and the quality is excellent inside and out!

  3. Roel Brakus 2024-08-27

I've had my little black accent for 6 years now and it has been the BEST car EVER! However, I'm now looking to upgrade to a Mini Cooper simply because I want a newer car and a change. Although I'm a little worried about letting this baby go, I'm determined to find a buyer who will love it as much as I do. If you're considering buying an accent, I would highly recommend it!

  4. Foster Bergstrom 2024-08-07

I love everything about my new Accent! As a GM buyer for over twenty years, I couldn't find what I was looking for at American car dealers. Someone at GM, Ford, and Chrysler should wake up. I don't want an SUV or giant-sized pickup. My Accent does everything well and I've had zero problems. Mine is the 3-door, and I call it my mini truck. This is actually my third Hyundai!

What a lovely story! It all started when I bought my son a used 2002 2-Door GS Accent for school back in 2008. I had to drive it a few times and was pleasantly surprised by the handling, power, and overall comfort, especially since I'm a big person. It wasn't fancy, but it was functional, so I decided to keep my eyes open for another one for my daughter who will turn 16 this summer. Luckily, I found a 2-door Accent GT, which was in relatively good condition and had only one owner. After checking the Car Fax report and speaking to the dealer who sold and serviced the car, I made an offer to the local used car dealer. We negotiated for a day or two, and I finally bought the vehicle in February. I've put a couple of thousand miles on it, and I must say, it's been a great vehicle for the money spent so far!
