The Hyundai Accent (Korean: 현대 엑센트), or Hyundai Verna (현대 베르나) is a subcompact car produced by Hyundai. In Australia, the first generation models carried over the Hyundai Excel name used by the Accent's predecessor. The Accent was replaced in 2000 by the Hyundai Verna in South Korea, although most international markets, including the US, retained the "Accent" name. The "Accent" name is an abbreviation of Advanced Compact Car of Epoch-making New Technology.

The Accent is produced for the Chinese market by Beijing Hyundai Co., a joint venture with Beijing Automotive Industry Corp. For the Russian market it was assembled by the TagAZ plant in Taganrog until 2011, and since 2011 it was assembled by the HMMR plant in Saint Petersburg and sold under the new name Hyundai Solaris. In Mexico, the Accent was marketed until 2014 by Chrysler as the Dodge Attitude, previously known as the Verna by Dodge. In Venezuela, Chrysler marketed these models as the Dodge Brisa until 2006. The Brisa was assembled by Mitsubishi Motors at its plant in Barcelona, Venezuela. Since 2002, the Accent had been the longest-running small family car sold in North America. In Puerto Rico, the second and third generations were sold as the Hyundai Brio.

In 2008, Hyundai Accent was named the most dependable subcompact car by J.D. Power and Associates.

Common 2022 Hyundai Accent problems

The Hyundai Accent, a subcompact car well-loved by drivers, has been in production since 1994 and is known for its ideal mileage and affordability.

  • Lack of Onboard Navigation: The base trim SE Hyundai Accent lacks a built-in navigation system, which can be inconvenient for those who prefer not to rely on their smartphones for navigation.
  • Struggling USB Port: The Accent's USB port may not provide enough current to charge smartphones effectively, particularly when using music or navigation functions.
  • Uncomfortable Seats: The cloth front seats in the Hyundai Accent have been criticized for their lack of support and bolstering, making long trips on hot days less comfortable.
  • Limited Driver Assistance Features: The base SE trim Accent only comes with a rearview camera, while more advanced safety features like automatic emergency braking and forward collision avoidance are only available on the top trim level.

For earlier model years, the Hyundai Accent has faced various issues, primarily related to engine and transmission problems.

In summary, while the 2022 Hyundai Accent has some minor drawbacks, it is generally considered a reliable vehicle. Earlier model years, however, have been associated with more significant issues, particularly related to engine and transmission problems.

  • VIN: 3KPC24A66NE
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: The instrument cluster malfunctioned and turned the dashboard off repeatedly in 2023 and now again in 2024. This part controls the cruise control, as well as the electrics on the dashboard. When it malfunctions, it deaccelerates the cruise control and you don't know what speed you are driving. The component was replaced in 2023 and is scheduled to be replaced, again, in two weeks. There is no warning when this part is going to malfunction and turn off and on.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-10
  • VIN: 3KPC24A66NE
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: On three separate occasions my car has completely shut off WHILE DRIVING! I purchased it brand new in August 2022. Each time there was no warning lights or anything. I would notice I was losing speed. When I would look down at the dashboard and notice all the lights were off and the entire car was off. Each time it has happened I have been able to slow down and pull over. I've had to put the car in to "Park" then restart the engine. It's a terrifying experience and I feel lucky that there were no cars in front of me. This has happened 3 times! Twice I had children in the car. Once I was going 70 mph and another time I was turning a curve. It has been by far one of the scariest things in my life. I took it to the dealership multiple times but they can not replicate the problem so they keep dismissing the case. The Hyundai corporation has also dismissed my case. I've tried reaching out to the attorneys and the dealership owner. The car should not be allowed on the road. At this point I'm driving with a video camera per advice of an attorney. However, I'm terrified for when this will happen again. It has happened at random and unpredictable times so I never know. I posted on a Facebook group and a few other people have commented that their Hyundai's are doing the same thing! They are running into the same problem with dealerships and corporate dismissing the cases.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-10
  • VIN: 3KPC24A6XNE
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: My 2022 Hyundai was broken into, in an attempt to steal it, due to the lack of immobilizers in these vehicles (and the viral videos that occurred due to Hyundai’s inability to resolve the issue). My window was smashed in, my ignition ruined, and the plastic panel under the steering wheel was ripped out. I filed a claim with my insurance company and a police report, but now I have to deal with increased insurance rates and at least $500 in damage. I’ve had no vehicle for at least 2 weeks, which hurts my livelihood (since I can’t drive to work) and I likely won’t have it for a few more weeks. I’ve asked my dealership if I have an immobilizer and they said they don’t know. They have confirmed I am not eligible for the software update that helps protect your car. They have confirmed that this break-in occurred, because of the viral video and lack of response from Hyundai. I now feel unsafe in my own home (where the incident occurred) and I worry that, even when I get my car back, the same incident will occur and it’ll cost even more. Or worse, it’ll actually be successfully stolen. Even though my car wasn’t stolen (only broken into), they were able to steal my neighbor’s Hyundai the exact same night. I now have no vehicles for emergencies and day-to-day requirements and fear for the vehicle / my safety. My car has been inspected by a Hyundai dealership, Progressive insurance, and Baltimore police. I was never notified about this issue by Hyundai. I was never sent a warning or recall notice and when I ask why my VIN isn’t on recall, Hyundai corporate says they don’t know and that they can’t confirm if I have an immobilizer. There was absolutely nothing wrong with my car prior to this incident. No warning messages / lamps and no mechanical failures.

STEERING,AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-24
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 3KPC24A6XNE
  • Components: STEERING,AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: My car, a 2022 Hyundai Accent Sel, left the right lane I was traveling in on a highway and continued into the left lane, then onto the left shoulder, and finally stopped in a ditch. The airbags did not deploy. I am having the steering column checked and airbags checked as I have read on several websites online that this is one of the recalls on my car (the steering column may loosen and may cause a crash). The Insurance changed the at-fault clause to not at fault after they verified the information online about the steering column being defective. My car is still in the auto repair shop, 38 days, still awaiting parts because the car was not made in the USA. The damage is $13,197. I do not see this recall reported on this website. There is a recall for parts missing on the seatbelts, I had that fixed on my last oil change. I do not see this listed here as well. I received a recall notice about the seatbelts, but I did not receive a notice about the steering column. The auto body shop will tow my car to Hyundai to check the steering column after my car is fixed as they told me Hyundai would have to fix this. The airbags did not deploy. I have read other people have reported this happening to them. This is not a recall issue reported, but rather a complaint. No warning signals or sounds went off when my car pulled left and brought me to a ditch. I was extremely lucky not to get hurt.

Parts distribution disconnect.

AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-13
  • VIN: 3KPC24A61NE
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: Instead of a simple seat belt warning light staying on when the driver's side belt is not connected, the car uses a complicated system: "The seat belt warning light will illuminate for approximately 6 seconds each time you place the ignition switch to the ON position regardless of belt fastening. However, if the seat belt is unfasted, a warning chime will sound for approximately 6 seconds. If you continue not to fasten the seat belt and you drive over 6 mph the warning light will stay illuminated. If you continue to drive over 12 mph the seat belt warning chime will sound for approximately 100 seconds and the corresponding warning light will blink, etc." Worse yet, as far as I can tell, the front passenger seat belt when unfastened will not show at all! The passenger side airbag light is on showing the airbag is not engaged about 50% to 75% of the time when that seat is occupied when a lumbar support "seat" is used. Instead of a simple sensor based on weight, Hyundai got "cutesy" and uses some sort of "electro-magnetic" sensor which is awful when my wife is occupying the passenger seat. I would hope you would require Hyundai to do a "fix" and install a simple sensor based on weight which is how, I believe, every car I've owned previously works. The wife has a back problem, hence the use of a lumbar support "seat" is required.

Negative 2022 Hyundai Accent car reviews

  1. Hiram Bosco 2024-10-25

The Accent may present some challenges with its electrical system and sideview mirror, but it starts and runs reliably. While there are not many features in the car, the dome light and radio work well. Occasionally, the car alarm may go off without reason. It is important to note that Hyundai service can be difficult to deal with and may take some time to resolve issues. The transmission can be a concern, with a failure rate of 15% - 20%, but the Accent is generally a reliable car. If any issues do arise, it is recommended to seek assistance from a trusted mechanic.

  2. Arlo Bergstrom 2024-06-02

It sounds like you had a mixed experience with your car. While it had great gas mileage, it seems like the manual transmission was difficult to handle and lacked some important safety features. It's understandable that you chose the 6sp for its unique features, but it seems like it may not have been the best fit for your needs. It's frustrating when a car doesn't perform as expected, especially when you have experience driving manual transmissions. I hope your next car is a better fit for you!

  3. Jeremie Weber 2024-05-04

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my 2020 accent. Unfortunately, I had to surrender it back to my financial credit union because insurance companies were quoting me over $750 a month due to the anti-theft system. Even after taking it in for 2 recalls, I still couldn't get insurance. It's been a frustrating experience, and I don't think I'll be buying another one anytime soon.

Positive 2022 Hyundai Accent car reviews

  1. Randall Rogahn 2024-11-27

I bought a 2022 Hyundai Accent in March, 2022. At first, I was a little hesitant because I had only had Sonatas previously. However, I really like this car! It is great on gas, has plenty of power, and is very comfortable to drive. I especially love the cloth seats and so far have no complaints.

  2. Benton Sauer 2024-11-26

In Canada, we were able to get the 5-door 2020 Hyundai Accent Ultimate. It comes with all the options you'd want in an inexpensive, yet sporty, sub-compact car. Although it has less power than the Elantra GT N-Line, it actually has a nicer design than the 5-door 2020 Elantra GT.

  3. Armani Herman 2024-11-03

This certified used Accent Limited has only 38k miles and comes with a variety of features, including LED headlights/tail lights, LED turn signals in side mirrors, a moon roof, heated seats/mirrors, Apple CarPlay, auto start control, auto temperature control, 17-inch alloys with performance tires, emergency auto braking, and a 6-speaker stereo. With all these features, it's a great value for the money, and it also has great gas mileage and warranty. While the back seat may be a bit tight, it's not a concern for me since I won't be sitting back there. Overall, I highly recommend the Limited model.

  4. Abelardo Wyman 2024-10-19

I recently purchased one of the last Accents ever made, as they are discontinuing the model after 2022. According to the dealer, I got one of the last two Accents in Michigan. This car is actually the first car I've driven extensively, so I don't have much to compare it to. However, I can say that with the 'sport' mode, this car has some serious giddy up and go. In town driving averages 30-40mpg and highway driving has gotten up to 48mpg so far. It's very quiet, and sometimes I forget it's even running. This vehicle is not for people who want a lot of tech, as there is no GPS, but the car does connect to any smartphone. While it may not be flashy in terms of tech and features, it is solidly built and drives like a dream. I've had it for a year already, and it has required very minimal maintenance. If you're looking for something inexpensive, simple, safe, dependable, and with good gas mileage, this is the car for you!

  5. Hoyt Langworth 2024-10-04

I was looking for a dependable car with modern features, and this one fit the bill perfectly. It was priced at 19K MSRP, but I was able to get it for 22K out the door. The manufacturer also offers a 5-year warranty and 3 years of included services. Plus, it gets great gas mileage, which is a huge plus these days.
