Common Ford Taurus problems
The Ford Taurus is a popular sedan known for its comfort and value, but like any vehicle, it can have its share of problems. Here are some of the most common issues reported by Ford Taurus owners:
- Transmission System: The transmission system is a common problem with the Ford Taurus, with issues such as stalling, hesitation, and difficulty starting the car. These problems tend to appear at more than 100,000 miles and can be expensive to fix.
- Head Gasket or Cracked Cylinder Head: Some 1990-1994, 1997-1998, 2000, 2005, 2011, and 2013 Ford Taurus models have been reported to emit white smoke from the exhaust due to a blown head gasket or a cracked cylinder head. This issue can be resolved using a head gasket set or replacing the cylinder heads.
In summary, while the Ford Taurus is generally a reliable vehicle, it can experience several common problems, including transfer case failure, strut mounts and bearings, automatic lights switch issues, oil leaks, blend door actuators, engine oil pan gasket leaks, transmission system issues, and head gasket or cracked cylinder head problems. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address these issues early on, potentially saving car owners from costly repairs.
Is the Ford Taurus a reliable car?
The Ford Taurus is a reliable midsize car with a reliability rating of 4.0 out of 5.0 from RepairPal. Some of the top Ford Taurus problems include a cracked windshield, gasket leaks, and engine problems.
What are the bad years for Ford Taurus?
Quick Answer: The Ford Taurus surprisingly has very few years to avoid. Those include 2002, 2003, and 2005. For a vehicle that's been in the industry as long as the Taurus, there are only three years that stand out among the rest as being worrisome.
Why did Ford stop making Taurus?
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, sales of the Taurus declined as it lost market share to Japanese mid-size sedans and as Ford shifted resources towards developing SUVs. The Taurus was withdrawn after the 2007 model year, with production ending on October 27, 2006.
How long do Ford Taurus engines last?
The range for a Ford Taurus is typically 180,000-200,000 miles. Based on those numbers, anything above 150,000 would be considered high mileage for a Ford Taurus.

Congratulations on your first domestic! It's great to hear that you're so happy with it. This car seems to be very reliable, even more so than Toyotas and VWs you've owned in the past. With almost 30K miles, it's impressive that you've only needed to perform maintenance. While the city mileage may not be the best, it's important to keep in mind that this is a 2 ton plus car with 263 horsepower, larger than any Toyota or Honda by 400-500 pounds with AWD, so the gas mileage for its size is commendable. It's not a Corolla or Camry 4 cylinder, and Honda and Toyota V6 cars, including the Avalon, are much smaller regardless of class (400-500 pounds), and they do not offer AWD. Additionally, the Taurus feels more stable at fast highway speeds, especially with crosswinds, than other sedans. Overall, it sounds like you made a great choice with this car!

Roomy, comfortable, and plenty of power with good fuel economy, this car is nicely styled. As a happy owner, I can say that it's a very nice car with a very reasonable price. While it may not have all the bells and whistles of today's standards, such as GPS and Sync, it still offers a great driving experience.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 1995 Taurus. I bought it back in 2003 and was immediately impressed with the lumbar back support after renting one. At the time, it only had 57,500 miles on it, which was pretty low for an eight-year-old car. I did have a minor issue with a water leak and some other small problems within the first year, but since then, the car has been performing nearly flawlessly with just routine maintenance. Thanks for letting me share!

The car was running fine for about six months, but unfortunately, it started to fall apart. On three separate occasions, it left me stranded on the highway without any warning. Although the dealer had the car for up to two weeks each time, the computer showed no problems. Eventually, they replaced the fuel pump, and this year, they had to replace the rear brake system (which may be due to its former life as a rental). Unfortunately, in the past month, the car died again without any warning. The diagnostics didn't explain the stall, but some faulty sensors needed to be replaced. It's a mystery that continues to baffle me. I don't blame the dealer; it's just a bad product. Quality issues and too many cars in the market explain the poor resale value. I grew up in a Ford family and have purchased four so far, but this will be my last one.

The 1997 Taurus Wagon was a reliable form of transportation for a while. Although, we did encounter some issues when we hit 75,000 miles. Unfortunately, the head gasket blew, and we had to pay $2500 for an engine rebuild on a 5-year-old car that was only worth $3750 as a trade-in.

The best thing about this car is that it can seat eight people, which is quite rare for a van. We did have to change the fuel pump at 55,000 miles earlier this year, and the door clips can come off at times. Additionally, the AC could be better and it tends to make some noise when driving on steep hills, unless you use premium gas. However, it handles well in windy conditions on the highway.

I purchased this car as my first vehicle approximately 3 and a half years ago. Unfortunately, after I finished paying it off, it began experiencing a series of major issues. While I enjoyed driving it when it was functioning properly, it was all too frequent that it wasn't. Despite keeping up with regular maintenance, the car was simply a lemon. I wouldn't even suggest this car to my adversaries, as I'm not that unkind.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with a car I bought from a private owner in 1998. It had 71,000 miles on it at the time, and I put another 70,000 on it before selling it in 2001. I have to say, the Yamaha 3.0 liter engine is truly one of the finest 24v V-6's ever made. It's a shame they stopped making it. However, I did have some issues with the Taurus guts. They were a total piece of garbage. Despite spending thousands to keep the car in perfect condition, it still had some small problems when I sold it. It ate through struts, brakes, batteries, clutches, and had a myriad of electrical problems. Overall, it was a great car, but I wouldn't recommend it due to the issues I had. Thanks for listening!
