Common Ford Taurus problems
The Ford Taurus is a popular sedan known for its comfort and value, but like any vehicle, it can have its share of problems. Here are some of the most common issues reported by Ford Taurus owners:
- Transmission System: The transmission system is a common problem with the Ford Taurus, with issues such as stalling, hesitation, and difficulty starting the car. These problems tend to appear at more than 100,000 miles and can be expensive to fix.
- Head Gasket or Cracked Cylinder Head: Some 1990-1994, 1997-1998, 2000, 2005, 2011, and 2013 Ford Taurus models have been reported to emit white smoke from the exhaust due to a blown head gasket or a cracked cylinder head. This issue can be resolved using a head gasket set or replacing the cylinder heads.
In summary, while the Ford Taurus is generally a reliable vehicle, it can experience several common problems, including transfer case failure, strut mounts and bearings, automatic lights switch issues, oil leaks, blend door actuators, engine oil pan gasket leaks, transmission system issues, and head gasket or cracked cylinder head problems. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address these issues early on, potentially saving car owners from costly repairs.
Is the Ford Taurus a reliable car?
The Ford Taurus is a reliable midsize car with a reliability rating of 4.0 out of 5.0 from RepairPal. Some of the top Ford Taurus problems include a cracked windshield, gasket leaks, and engine problems.
What are the bad years for Ford Taurus?
Quick Answer: The Ford Taurus surprisingly has very few years to avoid. Those include 2002, 2003, and 2005. For a vehicle that's been in the industry as long as the Taurus, there are only three years that stand out among the rest as being worrisome.
Why did Ford stop making Taurus?
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, sales of the Taurus declined as it lost market share to Japanese mid-size sedans and as Ford shifted resources towards developing SUVs. The Taurus was withdrawn after the 2007 model year, with production ending on October 27, 2006.
How long do Ford Taurus engines last?
The range for a Ford Taurus is typically 180,000-200,000 miles. Based on those numbers, anything above 150,000 would be considered high mileage for a Ford Taurus.

I used to own a 97 SHO with the Yamaha V-8 engine, which was a lot of fun, but the current generation of the Taurus is on a whole other level. Unfortunately, I had to sell my '16 SHO after my wife passed away last year, but I recently found a CPO '18 SEL at a local Ford dealer. I was able to negotiate a great trade and purchase price, and even got a 7 year 100K CPO warranty. The car has almost 300 HP with its 3.5L V-6 engine, which is plenty fast for me. In my opinion, this car is the best value out there, even though Ford has discontinued production. It's a beautiful car with top quality features.

I bought my 2016 Taurus SEL in May 2017 to replace three Buicks I owned previously. To my surprise, my Taurus rides just as well, is as quiet, and is more comfortable and gets better gas mileage than my Buicks. I didn't buy it for performance, but the engine and transmission are more than adequate. Because it's a sedan and was over a year old when I bought it, I got a great purchase price. Now, six months later, I have absolutely no buyer's remorse for purchasing the 2016 Ford Taurus. Great job, Ford!

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you mentioned having your car for a year without any issues. That's great to hear! However, I also understand that you're concerned about the value of your car. It can be frustrating when the value doesn't match what you owe. Let's see if we can find a solution together.

Vehicle year: 2006
I purchased this car in July 2020 for $3500 with 95K miles. It was previously owned by an elderly person, so it was very well maintained and cared for. I take the car on road trips every weekend (3 hours each way) and I enjoy every minute of it. The ride quality in this car is wonderful, it just floats down the road. The acceleration is not too slow and not too fast, it's just perfect. Equipped with Ford’s Vulcan 3.0L V6 engine, it is extremely reliable and handles perfectly. I absolutely love it! The gas mileage is what you would expect, I get about 20 overall (16 city 24 hwy). This is my first car and I have already put just about 10,000 miles on it. I hope to make it to at least 200,000! If you're considering purchasing a Taurus, go for it! You will not be dissatisfied!

Vehicle year: 2009
I recently got my first car on March 27th, 2018 and it has been a great experience so far. I needed a daily commuter that gets good gas mileage for my job which is around 28 miles away. I was pleasantly surprised with how well the car performs on the highway in terms of miles per gallon, averaging around 28-29 mpg on cruise control. The car has a bunch of features that even my dad's 2016 Ford Fusion S does not have, such as power front seats. As someone who is 6'6, finding the right amount of room in cars has always been a struggle for me, but this car fits me comfortably with room to spare in the ceiling. The ride is comfortable and luxurious, but not boring. The only cons I have noticed are the handling in hilly terrain of Cincinnati can be a bit lackluster, but turning off Overdrive has helped. Additionally, the dealership gave me a car with new brake pads, but after a couple of days of driving, the rotors seemed to be warped or it could be the calipers. It brakes well still, but it is a relatively expensive repair that will need to be done soon. Regardless, I still love this car as my first car. :)_______UPDATE: 2/22/2019I last wrote a review on this car back in March 2018. I still absolutely love the car. I purchased it with 103350 miles and it currently has 124,950 miles. So I have had about 21,000 miles of driving experience with this thing in the past 11 months. It handles great, although I think I need a realignment soon due to those Ohio potholes lol.The car is impressively quiet on the road. Switching from my family's other cars to this one is like night and day in terms of how smooth and quiet the ride is. I love the pep of the engine and the enjoyment I get from accelerating onto the highway. Although some drivers seem to assume I'm an old grandpa behind the wheel, I prove them wrong! :P With some fuel cleaners to help keep its performance up, I can go from 0-60 in about 6 seconds. While it can be expensive to fill up the 20-gallon tank every week to a week and a half, I get really good gas mileage (26-27 if I drive about 85% highway). The enjoyment of seeing If there is a failure and it doesn't go through the weep hole to leak on the passenger side of the vehicle, you may have coolant in your engine oil, which can cause serious damage. However, I have been fortunate enough to have had no coolant leaks, oil leaks, or transmission leaks. As a precautionary measure, I check both my coolant levels and oil dipstick every time I fill up. This helps me catch any potential issues early on. I am even considering saving up money to preemptively replace the water pump, which would give me peace of mind. With an oil change routine of every 5-7000 miles, my vehicle's engine looks to be in better shape than some of my family's newer cars. In short, I absolutely love my car and plan on keeping it for as long as possible. It is one of the last American sedans that is easy to maintain (I may not know how to change my oil, but I can easily change my air filter and add fluids as needed), has great visibility on all sides (I have LITERALLY no blind spots), and is roomy (did I mention I am 6'6? Lol). I feel confident and safe driving it.

Vehicle year: 1999
The 1999 Taurus sedan I purchased 5 years ago with 42k miles has been satisfactory overall. However, I did experience an issue when it left me stranded on a remote highway at 1:30AM. Despite having to replace the accelerator cable twice due to a broken plastic fitting, I was able to quickly design and carve a replacement fitting using a knife and a piece of plastic from the trunk of the car. It is disappointing that the design and test engineers did not do their jobs properly, as this part broke three times. A recall should have been implemented to address this issue.

This car was previously used as an executive rental and has been driven for 37,000 miles. Unfortunately, the power steering on the front-drive car required complete replacement at great expense. Additionally, the electrical system has been problematic, with the wipers turning on without human intervention. However, the full 60,000 mile maintenance has been done by the dealer. Within one week, the battery died and the car wouldn't start when hot. After diagnosis, it was found that the alternator/generator needed to be replaced. The auto transmission has been shifting slower and slower, and even locked into third gear on a steep hill, causing the engine to lug up the hill and the check engine light to turn on. After diagnosis, it was found that two cylinders were blown and substantial repairs were required. The car is being sold as-is, at a substantial discount from the nominal value, with 71,000 miles. Despite previous attempts to contact Ford, they have been unresponsive. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

At first, I thought the car was very ugly and a piece of junk, but the style grew on me. I didn't realize how comfortable and nice it was until we lost her and got a ZX2 (talk about small, haha).

Hi there! Thank you for sharing your experience with your car. It sounds like you've had a few issues with it over the years, but you've taken good care of it. You've had to replace the camshaft position sensor and a few other parts, but it's great that you've been able to keep it running for so long. It's unfortunate that the rocker panel trim has caused some problems due to the salt and water in the northeast, but hopefully you've been able to find a solution. Thanks again for sharing your story!

The Ford Taurus Wagon is a poor choice due to recurring issues with the 3.8 liter V6 engine. Despite being taken to a Ford dealership for repair of a bad head gasket under extended warranty, the engine failed again in less than 30,000 miles. Unfortunately, Ford Motor Company has been unable to provide a satisfactory solution to this problem. It is advised to avoid purchasing any Ford vehicle with the 3.8 Liter V6 engine due to its unreliability.
