Common 1991 Ford Taurus problems
The 1991 Ford Taurus has been reported to have issues with its transmission system, with two complaints of transmission failure submitted to CarComplaints.com. This problem can lead to serious consequences, as it can affect the car's ability to switch gears smoothly, causing it to jerk or hesitate while driving. In some cases, the car may not move at all, leaving the driver stranded.
The transmission system is a crucial component of any vehicle, as it is responsible for transmitting power from the engine to the wheels. When the transmission fails, it can result in a complete breakdown of the car, making it impossible to drive. This issue can be particularly dangerous if it occurs while driving at high speeds or in heavy traffic.
Transmission failure can be caused by a variety of factors, including wear and tear, lack of maintenance, and manufacturing defects. In some cases, it may be possible to repair the transmission, but in other cases, it may need to be replaced entirely. This can be a costly repair, as it may require the replacement of several parts, including the transmission itself, the torque converter, and the clutch.
To avoid transmission failure, it is important to maintain the car regularly and follow the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule. This includes regular oil changes, transmission fluid changes, and inspections of the transmission system. It is also important to address any issues with the transmission as soon as they arise, as minor problems can quickly escalate into major ones if they are not addressed promptly.
In addition to transmission failure, the 1991 Ford Taurus has also been reported to have issues with its engine, with 213 consumer complaints and 646 NHTSA complaints regarding engine problems. Some drivers have reported that their accelerator got stuck or that there was sudden acceleration when they did not have their foot on the gas. These issues can pose serious threats to the driver and other motorists on the road, as they can cause accidents and injuries.
To avoid engine problems, it is important to maintain the car regularly and address any issues as soon as they arise. This includes regular oil changes, engine tune-ups, and inspections of the engine system. It is also important to use high-quality fuel and engine oil, as this can help to prevent engine problems and extend the life of the car.
In conclusion, the 1991 Ford Taurus has been reported to have issues with its transmission system and engine. To avoid these problems, it is important to maintain the car regularly and address any issues as soon as they arise. By taking these steps, drivers can help to ensure that their car remains safe and reliable for many years to come.

THIS FAULT IN MY CAR ALMOST HAD ME AND MY 6 YEAR OLD GRANDSON IN AN ACCIDENT. WHEN I TOLD THE WOMAN SHEILA THIS SHE EXPLAINED TO ME THAT I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN WHEN BUYING THIS CAR THAT I SHOULD HAVE CALLED TO FIND OUT ABOUT THE RECALLS. NOW BECAUSE THIS DEALERSHIP REFUSED TO HELP ME IT NOW MAKES IT DIFFICULT FOR ME TO PERHAPS GO TO ANOTHER FORD DEALERSHIP THAT MAY HAVE BE ABLE TO HELP ME. I AM A STUDENT @ URI/CCE, ALSO WORKING, AND TAKING CARE OF MY 80 YEAR OLD FATHER. PRIOR TO THIS DAMAGE I HAD JUST FIX THIS CAR FOR $750.00, WHICH I COULD NOT AFFORD IN THE FIRST PLACE. SO LUCKILY THE STADIUM AUTOMALL IN RUTHERFORD IS DIRECTLY ACROSS THE STREET FROM WHERE I LIVE. THIS IS ALSO WHERE I PURCHASED IT 13 YEARS AGO. THE MAN ADMITTED IT WAS DULL AND A GOOD WAXING PROFESSIONALLY WOULD HELP. I TOLD HIM I WOULD BE TO EMBARASSED BECAUSE THE PAINT COMES OFF EVEN WHEN I DRY IT AFTER A WASHING. 1991 Ford Taurus recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 1991 Ford Taurus.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, KANSAS, KENTUCKY, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEBRASKA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGNIA, AND WISCONSIN. THE REAR LOWER SUBFRAME MOUNT PLATE NUT CAN EXPERIENCE STRESS CORROSION CRACKING IF SUBJECTED TO LONG TERM EXPOSURE TO ROAD SALTS. THIS CAN RESULT IN FRACTURE AND LOSS OF THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF THE SUBFRAME MOUNT ATTACHMENT. DETACHMENT OF THE BODY MOUNTS AT THE REAR CORNERS OF THE SUBFRAME, WHICH SUPPORTS THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION, ALLOWS THE REAR CORNERS OF THE SUBFRAME TO DROP.
- Consequence: IF BOTH REAR CORNERS DROP, STEERING WOULD BECOME SUDDENLY VERY DIFFICULT, AFFECTING VEHICLE CONTROL AND INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL SUBFRAME REAR MOUNT BOLTS, REINFORCEMENT PLATES, AND PLATE NUTS.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 3.8L ENGINES AND ORIGINALLY SOLD OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE FOLLOWING STATES: ALASKA, COLORADO, IOWA, IDAHO, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, KANSAS, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, MONTANA, NORTH DAKOTA, NEBRASKA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, SOUTH DAKOTA, VERMONT, WISCONSIN, AND WYOMING. WATER CAN ACCUMULATE WITHIN THE SPEED CONTROL CABLE CONDUIT. IF ENOUGH WATER ACCUMULATES, IT COULD FREEZE WITHIN A LOW AREA OF THE CABLE ROUTING WHEN EXPOSED TO A LONG TERM COLD SOAK AT TEMPERATURES AT LEAST SEVERAL DEGREES BELOW FREEZING.
- Consequence: DRIVER CONTROL OF VEHICLE SPEED USING THE SPEED CONTROL SYSTEM OR THE ACCELERATOR CONTROL SYSTEM WOULD BE DIMINISHED INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL ADD A BOOT TO THE SPEED CONTROL CABLE.
- Manufacturer: MONROE AUTO CORP.
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:SHOCK ABSORBER
- Summary: THE ARC WELDS ON THE SWAY BAR BRACKET, WHERE IT ATTACHES TO THE STRUT RESERVE TUBE, DID NOT FUSE PROPERLY.
- Consequence: OVER TIME, A PORTION OF THE BRACKET CAN TEAR AWAY FROM THE STRUT, FALLING INTO AND PUNCTURING THE TIRE OR CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE WHEEL, WHICH COULD RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT.
- Remedy: MONROE DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE STRUT FREE OF CHARGE.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: CHILDREN CAN ACCIDENTALLY LOCK THEMSELVES IN THE FOOTWELL AREA OF THE REAR-FACING THIRD SEAT, OR IN THE STORAGE COMPARTMENT IN STATION WAGONS NOT EQUIPPED WITH AN OPTIONAL THIRD SEAT. ONCE THE COMPARTMENT IS CLOSED IT CANNOT BE OPENED FROM THE INSIDE.
- Consequence: THERE IS A DANGER OF AIR DEPRIVATION, HYPERTHERMIA,AND/OR PANIC RESPONSE TO A CHILD WHO HAS LOCKED HIMSELF OR HERSELF INTO THECOMPARTMENT, WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF ASPHYXIATION.
- Remedy: REPLACE THE SELF-LATCHING ASSEMBLY CURRENTLY USED IN THE REAR STORAGE COMPARTMENT WITH A LATCH ASSEMBLY THAT CAN ONLY BE CLOSED WITH A KEY.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:DISC:ROTOR
- Summary: FRONT DISC BRAKE ROTORS OF THE SUBJECT VEHICLES MAY EXPERIENCE SEVERE CORROSION IF OPERATED IN AREAS WHERE CALCIUM CHLORIDE AND SODIUM CHLORIDE ARE USED EXTENSIVELY.
- Consequence: SEVERELY CORRODED ROTORS MAY FRACTURE OR SEPARATE NEARTHE INNER EDGES OF THE BRAKE DISCS RESULTING IN REDUCED BRAKING EFFECTIVENESS,HIGHER THAN NORMAL PEDAL EFFORTS, LOUD GRINDING NOISES, AND MODERATE PULLS WHENTHE BRAKES ARE APPLIED. REDUCED BRAKING EFFECTIVENESS MAY INCREASE MINIMUMSTOPPING DISTANCES, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN AN ACCIDENT.
- Remedy: REPLACE FRONT BRAKE ROTORS WITH FULL CAST FRONT BRAKE ROTORS.

Hi there! It sounds like you have a good car overall. Unfortunately, the hatch lid came from the factory misfitted to the car and cannot be corrected. On the bright side, the air conditioner and head gaskets were replaced at 55,000 miles, and other than that, it has been average on repairs.
-
I bought this car over 8 years ago, and it has always exceeded my expectations (now over 202k miles). It's been a great family wagon, with the 3rd seat, higher than expected mileage (about 27 to 29 mpg), and great value. The repairs have been minimal, so we've saved a lot of money over this long haul!

Hi there! Just wanted to give you an update on the 91 Taurus SHO. My daughter returned the car in February 2019 and since then, I've been keeping it parked outside on the curb. I've got some weather tech covers for the seats and I'm planning to repaint the car soon. I also replaced the A/C unit recently, so it's all set for the summer months. You'll be happy to know that there are $3,500 worth of new parts in this SHO! I've been saving up my spare change for future maintenance and new parts, so I'm definitely holding on to this Taurus SHO. Thanks for reading!

This has been a great car! It may not be the most stylish, but it always gets me from point A to point B. Although the A/C has been on its last legs for the past 6 years, it has served me well. I hope my next car is just as reliable. I do have to admit that some of the design choices, such as the one-piece bumpers, can be a bit costly to replace.
-
I've only owned the car for 4 months and I've fallen in love with it! The car is a total driving machine, really! In the few months that I've owned it, only one thing broke - the intermediate pipe, but that's it...

The Taurus SHO is a fantastic car for families and is a blast to drive. If you live in an area with snow during the winter, you'll appreciate its excellent traction thanks to the front-wheel drive. The car boasts a nearly bulletproof Yamaha engine, but being an early 90's Ford, it may require some TLC. This car comes fully loaded from the factory, usually with leather/cloth combination seats, automatic climate controls, and most of the options you would find on today's sport sedans. However, don't expect to get one for the $1700 that this site suggests as high end. A '91 SHO in decent shape is probably going to run around $3000 or maybe a little bit more.

This car has been quite a challenge to maintain. It has required a lot of repairs and has been quite expensive to keep running. However, I have learned a lot about car maintenance and have become quite knowledgeable about the inner workings of this vehicle. While it has been a frustrating experience at times, I am grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow. Thank you for considering my feedback.

Overall, this is a very comfortable car with many nice luxury features. The interior and exterior have held up well, despite being parked outside mostly. Unfortunately, the reliability is bad. I bought the car with 76,000 miles and the transmission went out at 79,000 miles. Shortly thereafter, the head gasket blew, both of which are known defects for this engine and transmission. However, our newest car is now a Saturn. (see review)

We bought this car hoping that it would be a reliable family car, but unfortunately, it has given us nothing but problems from the very beginning. Every month, we have had to replace just about every major part (minus the transmission) of the car in the past two years. If you are looking for a car that will run well and be reliable, it might be best to consider other options. In our experience, Ford Taurus's have not been the most reliable cars. However, we understand that everyone's experience may differ.

I have a 91 Taurus L. Unfortunately, I have had a lot of problems with it since I got it. The transmission slips, the front end was done twice, and the paint is peeling away. Additionally, I have noticed that the fabric on the ceiling is ripping in the back on almost every Taurus like mine. I hope to avoid buying a Ford again in the future.
