1993 Ford Taurus recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 8 recalls for different components of the 1993 Ford Taurus.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, KANSAS, KENTUCKY, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEBRASKA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGNIA, AND WISCONSIN. THE REAR LOWER SUBFRAME MOUNT PLATE NUT CAN EXPERIENCE STRESS CORROSION CRACKING IF SUBJECTED TO LONG TERM EXPOSURE TO ROAD SALTS. THIS CAN RESULT IN FRACTURE AND LOSS OF THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF THE SUBFRAME MOUNT ATTACHMENT. DETACHMENT OF THE BODY MOUNTS AT THE REAR CORNERS OF THE SUBFRAME, WHICH SUPPORTS THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION, ALLOWS THE REAR CORNERS OF THE SUBFRAME TO DROP.
- Consequence: IF BOTH REAR CORNERS DROP, STEERING WOULD BECOME SUDDENLY VERY DIFFICULT, AFFECTING VEHICLE CONTROL AND INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL SUBFRAME REAR MOUNT BOLTS, REINFORCEMENT PLATES, AND PLATE NUTS.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:SPRINGS:COIL SPRINGS
- Summary: THIS IS NOT A SAFETY RECALL IN ACCORDANCE WITH FEDERAL REGULATION 573. HOWEVER, IT IS DEEMED A SAFETY IMPROVEMENT CAMPAIGN BY THE AGENCY. VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF NEW YORK, MICHIGAN, OHIO, ILLINOIS, WISCONSIN, PENNSYLVANIA, MASSACHUSETTS, INDIANA, NEW JERSEY, MAINE, CONNECTICUT, NEW HAMPSHIRE, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, MINNESOTA, IOWA, MISSOURI, KENTUCKY, MARYLAND, DELAWARE, AND WEST VIRGINIA. FORD IS PROVIDING AN EXTENDED WARRANTY THROUGH THE YEAR 2001 FOR REPLACEMENT OF FRON TSPRINGS DUE TO FRACTURE. THE FRONT COIL SPRINGS CAN FRACTURE AS A RESULT OF CORROSION IN COMBINATION WITH SMALL CRACKS IN THE SPRINGS.
- Consequence: THE FRONT TIRE COULD DEFLATE DUE TO A BROKEN FRONT COIL SPRING CONTACTING THE TIRE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: CUSTOMERS WITH VEHICLES THAT HAVE BROKEN SPRINGS ARE TO RETURN THEIR VEHICLE FOR SPRING REPLACEMENT. BOTH SPRINGS WILL BE REPLACED EVEN IF ONLY ONE SPRING IS FRACTURED.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY

- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS:SWITCH
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE HEADLIGHTS CAN FLASH INTERMITTENTLY AS A RESULT OF THE CIRCUIT BREAKER OPENING. THE VEHICLE'S HEADLIGHTS CAN GO OUT FOR BRIEF INTERVALS.
- Consequence: LOSS OF HEADLIGHTS DURING VEHICLE OPERATION CAN AFFECT A DRIVER'S ABILITY TO NAVIGATE THE ROADWAY AND REDUCE THE VISIBILITY OF THE VEHICLE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A HEADLIGHT SWITCH THAT INCORPORATES A CRICUIT BREAKER OF REVISED DESIGN AND INSTALLATION OF A WIRING HARNESS CONNECTOR AND WIRING, IF NEEDED.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 3.8L ENGINES AND ORIGINALLY SOLD OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE FOLLOWING STATES: ALASKA, COLORADO, IOWA, IDAHO, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, KANSAS, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, MONTANA, NORTH DAKOTA, NEBRASKA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, SOUTH DAKOTA, VERMONT, WISCONSIN, AND WYOMING. WATER CAN ACCUMULATE WITHIN THE SPEED CONTROL CABLE CONDUIT. IF ENOUGH WATER ACCUMULATES, IT COULD FREEZE WITHIN A LOW AREA OF THE CABLE ROUTING WHEN EXPOSED TO A LONG TERM COLD SOAK AT TEMPERATURES AT LEAST SEVERAL DEGREES BELOW FREEZING.
- Consequence: DRIVER CONTROL OF VEHICLE SPEED USING THE SPEED CONTROL SYSTEM OR THE ACCELERATOR CONTROL SYSTEM WOULD BE DIMINISHED INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL ADD A BOOT TO THE SPEED CONTROL CABLE.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:COOLING SYSTEM:FAN
- Summary: THESE VEHICLES ARE ORIGINALLY SOLD OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE FOLLOWING STATES: ALASKA, IOWA, MINNESOTA, NEBRASKA, NORTH DAKOTA, AND SOUTH DAKOTA. DURING HIGH WINDS, HEAVY, BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW, AND LOW TEMPERATURES, THE ENGINE COOLING FAN CAN BECOME BLOCKED OR FROZEN WITH SNOW. THE FAN MOTOR MAY NOT ROTATE AND COULD OVERHEAT.
- Consequence: THIS CONDITION CAN CAUSE SMOKE OR FLAMES FROM THE FAN AND/OR SHROUD, THE FAN ELECTRICAL WIRING, OR THE FAN MOTOR RESULTING IN A VEHICLE FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL AN ELECTRICAL JUMPER HARNESS CONTAINING AN AUTOMATIC RESETTING CIRCUIT BREAKER TO PROTECT THE FAN MOTOR LOW SPEED CIRCUITRY FROM OVERHEATING.

- Summary: THE ARC WELDS ON THE SWAY BAR BRACKET, WHERE IT ATTACHES TO THE STRUT RESERVE TUBE, DID NOT FUSE PROPERLY.
- Consequence: OVER TIME, A PORTION OF THE BRACKET CAN TEAR AWAY FROM THE STRUT, FALLING INTO AND PUNCTURING THE TIRE OR CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE WHEEL, WHICH COULD RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT.
- Remedy: MONROE DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE STRUT FREE OF CHARGE.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP
- Summary: ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM CONTROLLERS DESIGNED FOR REAR WHEEL DRIVE CARS MAY HAVE BEEN INSTALLED ON THESE FRONT WHEEL DRIVE CARS..
- Consequence: THIS COULD RESULT IN REDUCED BRAKING ABILITY AND POSSIBLEVEHICLE ACCIDENT.
- Remedy: REPLACE THE REAR WHEEL DRIVE ABS CONTROLLER WITH A FRONT WHEEL DRIVE ABS CONTROLLER.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share a little story about my 1993 Taurus GL. I was lucky enough to purchase it from a friend's grandma back in September of 2008, and it only had 76,000 miles on it at the time. The car had a power steering line replaced before I bought it, but other than that, it had just received regular oil changes. Since then, I've had to replace the rack and pinion and the starter, but other than that, it's just been routine maintenance. I absolutely love the 3.8 liter engine, even though it can be a bit tricky to work on due to its size. I've taken it on plenty of road trips, and it's always performed beautifully. Plus, it gets an impressive 21 miles to the gallon in the city! Thanks for letting me share my story with you.
-
Your car sounds like it was a great investment! It had ABS/Dual air bags which made it a safe car. It's great to hear that you had no major issues with it, just the normal oil change and brake fixes. Although, it's a shame that you had to get your air conditioning fixed, but it's good to know that it's all sorted now. You had your car for seven years, which is a long time! It must have been a reliable car. I see that you sold it when the Taurus got rid of the ugly butterfly shape and got side air bags. It's always exciting to get a new car, and it's great that you chose the new Taurus for its safety features. You mentioned that the 93 Taurus was comfortable and safe and a pleasure to drive, which is fantastic to hear!
-
This has been my favorite car! I bought it in '05 with 80k miles on it and have more than doubled those miles. I've taken it on numerous long trips, including a driving vacation last summer from Washington state to lower California and back. I get roughly 26 mpg on the highway. It's even more comfortable than my parents' newer Toyota Camry. I drive it hard on the highway and rural unpaved country roads. This is one car that I'm going to miss when it finally gives up. I agree with the alignment issues, which, if you don't take care of regularly, will wear out the tires. I also have to replace the brakes quite often. Other than that, just routine maintenance. I definitely will stick with Taurus!
-
I really like the result of buying this car! Even with 80000 miles, it runs really well, even with my foot to the floor almost all the time. The only issue is that the check engine light comes on in warm weather or when I drive too fast. I realized it could have almost overheated, so to counteract that, I just look at the RPMs and try not to go over 3000. And it's fine for hours! It's amazing how much I've grown to like it even more over time that I've owned it.
-
You've got yourself a very reliable and comfortable car there! The front wheel drive is great for handling in bad conditions, and the fold down rear seats allow for versatility in moving cargo. Plus, it's roomier than the newer body designed Tauruses. It's great to hear that you haven't had any major mechanical issues over the ten years you've owned it.

The 93 Taurus could be a great car, but it was important to get the right one. The GL without the 3.8ltr V6 was the best option, as it was reliable and affordable. Unfortunately, I ended up with an LX wagon that had all the bells and whistles, including a 3.8 engine. This turned out to be a mistake. The transmission was problematic, and the electronics were of poor quality. The electric seats jammed frequently, and the stock radio was subpar. Additionally, the car had an auto-lock feature that could be inconvenient. Despite the good torque and comfortable seats, the build quality was lacking. After experiencing numerous issues, I decided to switch to a 1999 Corolla, which lasted for almost 400K miles without any problems. It's safe to say that the 93 Taurus was not my favorite car. Its resale value in 1999 with 67K miles on it was only $3500.00.

I owned my Taurus wagon for almost 3 years after buying it used. Although I had some trouble with the wipers and alternator from the beginning, I still enjoyed the car. It was great being able to fit 8 kids in one car! I eventually sold it with 105K miles on it.

I purchased this car back in August '98. It had a bit of trouble switching from first to second gear, with some really bad kicking, and the headlights would go out from time to time. I also had to replace the radiator once. However, overall it drove well. It was comfortable, relatively quick, and got good mileage. Unfortunately, the transmission recently went out. In the end, I got 3.5 years out of it, which I consider a bargain given what I paid. The only downside is that it only lasted for 90,000 miles. My advice: if you were looking for a short-term fix a few years ago, the '93 Taurus may have been a good choice. However, due to their age and shoddy build, they are probably too much of a maintenance liability to be worth the trouble.

I bought my 'Black Bird' brand new in 1993 and I'm still driving it! With 121,000 miles on the clock, it's still rolling smoothly. Unlike many other drivers, I've had no serious problems with my car. Although I've had to replace the radiator, the AC compressor solenoid, and the front suspension toe control links on both sides, as well as the brakes all the way around (fronts twice), I'm now on my third set of Goodyear GT+4's. The car still goes like a scalded dog, and its only quirk is the pesky 'Check Engine' light, which is probably due to a bad O2 sensor. I'm considering replacing it with a new GTO, but I'll have to sneak it into the garage without my wife noticing!

Head gaskets (twice), 4 starters, 2 alternators, bad factory rotors, 2 radiators, brake lines, water pump, rack & tie rods the list goes on and on. But Fords are my mechanics favorite cars, and he has a new boat to prove it. Many rattles, sqeaks and noises. The repairs were many even when the car was new. I should have sold it years ago.
