- Cooling System Problems: Issues with the cooling system, such as coolant leaks, radiator failures, and water pump malfunctions, have been reported by owners. A properly functioning cooling system is crucial for regulating the engine temperature and preventing overheating. Regular inspections and maintenance of the cooling system are essential to avoid engine damage.
- Interior and Exterior Wear: Complaints include wear and tear on both the interior and exterior components of the 1996 Ford Taurus. Issues like worn-out seals, malfunctioning cup holders, and deteriorating upholstery can impact the comfort and aesthetics of the vehicle. Regular cleaning and maintenance can help preserve the interior and exterior condition of the car.
These common problems reported by owners of the 1996 Ford Taurus highlight the importance of regular maintenance, prompt repairs, and thorough inspections to ensure the vehicle's longevity and performance. Addressing these issues proactively can help mitigate potential safety risks and costly repairs in the long run.

- Summary: THE MOTOR CRADLE IN MY MOTHER-IN-LAW'S 1996 TAURUS RUSTED THROUGH AND BROKE AS SHE WAS MAKING A TURN. THIS CAUSED THE MOTOR TO PARTIALLY DROP MAKING STEERING ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM FOR THE 1995 TAURUS IN DEC. OF 1998. MY QUESTION IS IF THIS PROBLEM WAS NOT DISCOVERED UNTIL 1998 THEN WHY WOULD THE 1996 TAURUS NOT BE INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL? I WOULD LIKE TO SEE CREDIBLE DOCUMENTATION THAT FORD SUBSTANTIALLY FIXED A PROBLEM WITH THE MOTOR CRADLES IN THE 1996 TAURUS TWO YEARS BEFORE THEY KNEW THERE WAS A PROBLEM PROMPTING THE 1998 RECALL. SHORT OF THAT, I WOULD LIKE NHTSA TO EXPLAIN WHY THIS PROBLEM SHOULD NOT BE FIXED BY FORD. *TR

- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES PREVIOUSLY SERVICED UNDER FORD SERVICE BULLETIN 97-17-9 FROM AUGUST 1997 THROUGH DECEMBER 1997. THESE VEHICLES WERE INADVERTENLY EQUIPPED WITH AN 18-GALLON FUEL TANK RATHER THAN THE 16-GALLON AS SPECIFIED. THE 18-GALLON TANK HAS A SECOND VALVE LOCATION WHERE A SHIPPING PLUG SHOULD BE INSTALLED.
- Consequence: IF THIS SHIPPING PLUG IS DISPLACED, FUEL LEAKAGE CAN RESULT. FUEL LEAKAGE IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE COULD POTENTIALLY RESULT IN A FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL THE CORRECT FUEL TANK.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
- Summary: THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION PARK PAWL SHAFT MAY NOT BE FREE TO ROTATE AS INTENDED. IF THE PARK PAWL SHAFT DOES NOT ROTATE, IT WOULD PREVENT THE PARK PAWL FROM ENGAGING THE PARK GEAR WHEN THE SHIFT LEVER IS IN THE PARK POSITION.
- Consequence: THIS CONDITION COULD RESULT IN THE VEHICLE ROLLING AS IF IN NEUTRAL WITH THE SHIFT LEVER IN THE PARK POSITION.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE PARK PAWL SHAFT ROTATION AND THOSE SHAFTS WITH RESTRICTED ROTATION WILL BE REPLACED WITH A SHORTER SHAFT THAT WILL NOT RESTRICT ROTATION.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:GEAR POSITION INDICATION (PRNDL)

- Consequence: UNINTENDED AND UNEXPECTED VEHICLE MOVEMENT CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY AND PROPERTY DAMAGE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE PARK PAWL ABUTMENT BRACKET.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM
- Summary: THE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR LOCATED ON THE FUEL RAIL IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT HAS A VACUUM DIAPHRAGM THAT WAS DAMAGED DURING MANUFACTURE OF THE REGULATOR.
- Consequence: IF THE DIAPHRAGM TEARS OR RUPTURES, LIQUID FUEL COULD ENTER THE INTAKE MANIFOLD PLENUM THROUGH THE VACUUM LINE RESULTING IN EITHER RELEASE OF FUEL FROM THE AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY OR THE EXHAUST SYSTEM. FUEL RELEASE IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE COULD POTENTIALLY RESULT IN A FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR. THOSE REGULATORS PRODUCED DURING THE SUSPECT TIME PERIOD WILL BE REPLACED.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
- Summary: THE PARK PAWL SHAFT WAS IMPROPERLY POSITIONED WHEN THE ROLL PIN THAT RETAINS IT WAS INSTALLED DURING TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY. IF THE SHAFT WAS NOT PROPERLY POSITIONED, THE ROLL PIN MAY NOT HAVE LINED UP WITH THE GROOVE IN THE SHAFT AND HAVE BEEN CRUSHED AT ASSEMBLY. ALSO, A BURR COULD HAVE BEEN RAISED ON THE SHAFT.
- Consequence: THIS COULD RESULT IN THE PARK PAWL OCCASIONALLY NOT ENGAGING WHEN THE TRANSMISSION SELECTOR LEVER IS PLACED IN THE PARK POSITION. THIS COULD RESULT IN THE VEHICLE ROLLING AS IF IN NEUTRAL IF THE VEHICLE OPERATOR DOES NOT APPLY THE PARKING BRAKE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE PARK PAWL SHAFT ROLL PIN. IF THE ROLL PIN IS DAMAGED, BOTH THE ROLL PIN AND THE PARK PAWL SHAFT WILL BE REPLACED. IN ADDITION, OWNERS WILL BE REMINDED TO FULLY APPLY THE PARKING BRAKE, IN ADDITION TO PLACING THE TRANSMISSION IN PARK.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:BRAKE FLUID LOW WARNING: LAMP
- Summary: THE BRAKE SYSTEM FLUID LEVEL INDICATOR LAMP SWITCH CAN MALFUNCTION. THIS DOES NOT COMPLY WITH FMVSS NO. 105, "HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEMS."
- Consequence: CONSEQUENCE OF NON-COMPLIANCE: IF THE SWITCH MALFUNTIONS, THE BRAKE SYSTEM WARNING LAMP WILL EITHER REMAIN ILLUMINATED CONTINUOUSLY OR FAIL TO LIGHT AS INTENDED WHEN THE FLUID LEVEL FALLS TO A CERTAIN LEVEL. IN EITHER CASE, THE VEHICLE OPERATOR WOULD NOT BE WARNED OF A LOW BRAKE FLUID LEVEL CONDITION.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE BRAKE SYSTEM FLUID LEVEL INDICATOR LAMP SWITCHES.

The only things I have had to change besides the brakes and tires all around are the power steering pump, which went after 134k miles, the fuel tank, and the water pump. Now, with all the bugs worked out, it runs awesome for a car built 14 years ago. I would definitely recommend it and will be buying a newer one, probably a Mercury Sable, though they are a little bit nicer.
-
I love my 1996 Ford Taurus GL! It's been with me for a while now, and it's still going strong. I bought it with 96,825 miles on it, and now it has 114,000 miles on it. The only issues I've had with it are the typical Taurus problems, like having to replace the brakes and brake lines. But that's to be expected with a car of this age. Overall, it still drives like a dream and has plenty of get up and go!
-
I've been the proud owner of this vehicle for 3 years now. When I first purchased it, it had 112k miles on it, and now it has 160k. Before it came into my possession, it was used as a rental car and work vehicle, and had been involved in a couple of accidents. However, I've taken good care of it and have had some necessary repairs done along the way, such as replacing the rear struts at 150k, the original alternator at 158k, and the master brake cylinder at 160k. The DPFE sensor has been a bit of a nuisance, causing the check engine light to come on about 90% of the time, but I've had it replaced three times. The 24v Duratec V6 engine is still plenty powerful, even compared to newer vehicles. It has a listed 0-60 time in the mid 8's, but I've seen it as low as 7. The highway acceleration is excellent, and it still holds its own when compared to newer models like the BMW 328, Audi A6, and Accord V6 from 2000 and up.
-
I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your car! It's amazing that you've been able to put so many miles on it without any major repairs. Your dedication to regular maintenance is truly impressive and has clearly paid off. It's great to hear that the costs for repairs have been reasonable as well. Based on your experience, I would definitely recommend this car as a reliable and affordable option for anyone in need of transportation.

Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 1996 Ford Taurus. I drove it for 6 years and it's been a great car! Despite having more than 100,000 miles, it's still in good shape. Although I did have some issues at the beginning, I was able to get the full value from my extended warranty. Currently, everything still works perfectly - the electrical components, seats, paint, and engine. Even the A/C still works like a charm! Overall, it's been a really dependable car. However, I've decided to upgrade to a BMW. Thanks for listening!

This is my first Ford and I was pleased with the purchase. I would definitely recommend the Ford Taurus to others.

Although my Taurus has had some issues, I am confident that these problems are not indicative of the model's overall quality. While the transmission has gone out twice, the brakes have gone out, and the starter has had to be replaced, I believe that these issues are not the fault of the model itself. It is possible that the previous owner did not maintain the car properly. Regardless, I am grateful for the gift and will continue to take care of the car to ensure its longevity.

The car seemed nice at first. I owned it for three years and it only had 91K miles on it. However, I had to replace the brakes twice, the temperature thermometer gave out, and I had a gas lock issue. I paid $1,000 to the dealership to diagnose the problem, only to be told that I was using the wrong type of gas. I switched to the correct gas, but the problem persisted. Additionally, the steering wheel needs to be parked straight or it locks and won't start. The gear shifter also gave out, and all of these issues occurred within one year. My car has been towed seven times, and I have never ridden a bus in my life until I owned this car. I thought it would be reliable for college, but I was wrong. The car is poorly built and still overheats when idling at lights or slowing down. I will never buy a Ford again. Unfortunately, this car has been very unreliable.

I purchased this car in 1998 and it has served me well for many years. While I did need to replace a transmission part at around 70,000 miles, I am currently experiencing a fluctuating temperature gauge. However, I am confident that I will be able to address this issue and continue to enjoy my Ford for years to come.

If BMW were based in the US, this would be their poster child. The car boasts a supple and lush small block 3.4-liter V8 powerplant that can take you to light speed in seconds. Freeway merges are a breeze - just point for a hole, stab the gas, and you're there. The car handles with composure and poise, and the tires barely want to let loose. The gentle burble of the engine at cruising speed (80+ MPH) can put your children to sleep, and by the same token, can wake the dead when pushed hard. The glorious sound that the engine makes at its 6,200 RPM redline is what dreams are made of. The simple and comfortable interior finishes it off.
