Common 1994 Ford Taurus problems

The Ford Taurus, a popular midsize car, has been known for its reliability and impressive features. However, like any other vehicle, it is not immune to certain problems. This article will focus on the common problems with the 1994 Ford Taurus, based on complaints from its owners.

  • Engine Oil Pan Gasket Leak: The most common problem reported by 1994 Ford Taurus owners is the engine oil pan gasket leak. This issue affected 256 people, with the leaking oil accumulating on the exhaust system and causing a burning smell. The problem can be fixed by replacing the engine oil pan gasket, which costs an estimated $321 to $392. This issue affects 20 model years, from 1990 to 2007 plus 2012 and 2014, and typically appears around 112,611 miles.
  • Engine Buck/Misfire at Freeway Speeds: Another common problem is the engine bucking or misfiring when driving at freeway speeds. This issue doesn't generate any fault codes, and an intermittent fault in the camshaft synchronizer assembly is the cause. Ford issued a service bulletin that the problem can be diagnosed by checking the knock sensor data. If necessary, the synchronizer assembly should be replaced. The general diagnosis of the issue costs between $88 and $111. This problem affects 18 model years, from 1992 to 1995 and 1998 to 2011, appearing on average around 125,646 miles.
  • Faulty Idle Air Bypass Valve: A third common problem is the engine stalling or hesitating on acceleration due to a faulty idle air bypass valve. This issue could also cause problems when starting the car if the engine is cold or idling. The cost for diagnosis and testing of the check engine warning light is about $88 to $111. This issue affects 13 model years, including 1990, 1994, 1997, 1998, 2000 to 2005, 2007, 2012, and 2014, and typically appears around 141,956 miles.
  • Camshaft Sensor Magnet Damage: Some 1994 Ford Taurus owners have reported that their camshaft sensor magnet has caused damage to the synchronizers by falling out of its mount. This problem causes long crank times when the engine is being started and can also cause the check engine light to turn on. Repairing the problem means replacing both the magnet and the synchronizers. This issue appears on average around 126,159 miles and affects 16 model years of the Taurus, from 1995 to 2010.
  • Sputtering and Dying: Some 1994 Ford Taurus GL owners have reported that their car suddenly started sputtering and dying, and then it wouldn't start. After replacing the starter, spark plugs, and the battery, the problem persisted. This issue may be related to the engine, fuel system, or electrical system, and further diagnosis is required to determine the root cause.

In conclusion, the 1994 Ford Taurus, like any other vehicle, has its share of common problems. These issues include engine oil pan gasket leaks, engine bucking or misfiring at freeway speeds, faulty idle air bypass valves, camshaft sensor magnet damage, and sputtering and dying. While these problems can be frustrating for owners, they are generally repairable, and many of these issues do not appear until the vehicle has reached higher mileage. Regular maintenance and addressing issues as soon as they arise can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the 1994 Ford Taurus.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2000-07-19
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC
  • Summary: IT'S NOT GEARED TO ANY MANUFACTURE BECAUSE ALL THE VEHICLES I HAVE DRIVEN WORK THE SAME WAY. THIS PERTAINING TO CRUISE CONTROL. THEIR IS ONLY TWO WAYS TO SHUT IT OFF. THE ONE WAY YOU SHUT IT OFF IS TO HIT THE BRAKES LIKE IF YOU HAVE STOP FAST TO AVOID A ACCIDENT. BUT THE PROBLEM IS IF THE BRAKE LIGHT FUSE IS BLOWN IT WILL NOT SHUT OFF THE CRUISE AND YOU ARE FIGHTING THE BRAKE WITH THE ENGINE REVVING AT A HIGHER RATE LIKE HIGHWAY SPEED. THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN BRING IT OFF CRUISE IS MANUALLY SHUT IT OFF THROUGH THE ON AND OFF SWITCH. NOW AT AVOIDING A ACCIDENT THE FIRST THING YOU DO HIT THE BRAKE I DON'T I THINK MOST PEOPLE WOULD SHUT IT OFF MANUALLY AT THE TIME OF A ACCIDENT WHEN THEIR UNDER PRESSURE OF A ACCIDENT AND HAVE TIME TO THE BURN OUT FUSE CAN HAPPEN FROM A SHORT THAT HAPPENS WITHIN THE VEHICLE ELECTRIC OR A SHORT IN A THE TOWING OBJECT. THIS HAPPENED YEARS AGO WITH ME BUT WITH ALL THE PROBLEMS WITH THROTTLE THAT HAS HAPPEN RECENT MADE ME THINK ABOUT WHAT HAPPEN TO ME. AND AGAIN THIS IS NOT GEARED TO ANY CERTAIN MANUFACTURE I HAVE HAD FORD TO GM. *TR

1998-12-16
  • Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
  • Components: STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS
  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, KANSAS, KENTUCKY, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEBRASKA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGNIA, AND WISCONSIN. THE REAR LOWER SUBFRAME MOUNT PLATE NUT CAN EXPERIENCE STRESS CORROSION CRACKING IF SUBJECTED TO LONG TERM EXPOSURE TO ROAD SALTS. THIS CAN RESULT IN FRACTURE AND LOSS OF THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF THE SUBFRAME MOUNT ATTACHMENT. DETACHMENT OF THE BODY MOUNTS AT THE REAR CORNERS OF THE SUBFRAME, WHICH SUPPORTS THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION, ALLOWS THE REAR CORNERS OF THE SUBFRAME TO DROP.
  • Consequence: IF BOTH REAR CORNERS DROP, STEERING WOULD BECOME SUDDENLY VERY DIFFICULT, AFFECTING VEHICLE CONTROL AND INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL SUBFRAME REAR MOUNT BOLTS, REINFORCEMENT PLATES, AND PLATE NUTS.

  • Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS:SWITCH
  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE HEADLIGHTS CAN FLASH INTERMITTENTLY AS A RESULT OF THE CIRCUIT BREAKER OPENING. THE VEHICLE'S HEADLIGHTS CAN GO OUT FOR BRIEF INTERVALS.
  • Consequence: LOSS OF HEADLIGHTS DURING VEHICLE OPERATION CAN AFFECT A DRIVER'S ABILITY TO NAVIGATE THE ROADWAY AND REDUCE THE VISIBILITY OF THE VEHICLE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A HEADLIGHT SWITCH THAT INCORPORATES A CRICUIT BREAKER OF REVISED DESIGN AND INSTALLATION OF A WIRING HARNESS CONNECTOR AND WIRING, IF NEEDED.

WATER CAN ACCUMULATE WITHIN THE SPEED CONTROL CABLE CONDUIT. IF ENOUGH WATER ACCUMULATES, IT COULD FREEZE WITHIN A LOW AREA OF THE CABLE ROUTING WHEN EXPOSED TO A LONG TERM COLD SOAK AT TEMPERATURES AT LEAST SEVERAL DEGREES BELOW FREEZING.
  • Consequence: DRIVER CONTROL OF VEHICLE SPEED USING THE SPEED CONTROL SYSTEM OR THE ACCELERATOR CONTROL SYSTEM WOULD BE DIMINISHED INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL ADD A BOOT TO THE SPEED CONTROL CABLE.
1997-02-25
  • Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:COOLING SYSTEM:FAN
  • Summary: THESE VEHICLES ARE ORIGINALLY SOLD OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE FOLLOWING STATES: ALASKA, IOWA, MINNESOTA, NEBRASKA, NORTH DAKOTA, AND SOUTH DAKOTA. THE VEHICLES INVOLVED ARE 1992-1994 TEMPO/TOPAZ VEHICLES WITH 3.0L ENGINES; 1994 TEMPO/TOPAZ WITH 2.3L ENGINES; 1992-1995 TAURUS/SABLE WITH 3.8L ENGINES; 1994-1995 TAURUS/SABLE WITH 3.0L ENGINES AND 1992-1994 LINCOLN CONTINENTAL VEHICLES WITH 3.8L ENGINES. DURING HIGH WINDS, HEAVY, BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW, AND LOW TEMPERATURES, THE ENGINE COOLING FAN CAN BECOME BLOCKED OR FROZEN WITH SNOW. THE FAN MOTOR MAY NOT ROTATE AND COULD OVERHEAT.
  • Consequence: THIS CONDITION CAN CAUSE SMOKE OR FLAMES FROM THE FAN AND/OR SHROUD, THE FAN ELECTRICAL WIRING, OR THE FAN MOTOR RESULTING IN A VEHICLE FIRE.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL AN ELECTRICAL JUMPER HARNESS CONTAINING AN AUTOMATIC RESETTING CIRCUIT BREAKER TO PROTECT THE FAN MOTOR LOW SPEED CIRCUITRY FROM OVERHEATING.

Negative 1994 Ford Taurus car reviews

  1. Oren Gerhold 2025-01-09

During my first year of owning the car, I had a few issues with the dealership. Unfortunately, I had to replace the water pump, fuel pump, 2 starters (which were defective), and the keyless entry was DOA. Additionally, various hoses needed to be replaced and the coin holder was holding the previous owner's pennies hostage. The dealership had my car for longer than I did during the first month. In the second year, I had to replace the radiator, one starter, and one brake light. The A/C also stopped working, the radio is losing its functionality, and there was a blown head gasket and two other leaks. Unfortunately, at least one of us has carbon monoxide poisoning and the transmission is leaking. The six-month-old radiator is also leaking. Currently, the dealership has my car, and the repairs are extensive. It's important to note that Consumer Reports did not mention anything about a defective head gasket!

I purchased the car with 56K miles and have put 81K miles on it since. Although it ran strong for the first year, I noticed that it always pulls to one side. I had the tires aligned, but it turned out that the entire front end (including the suspension, swaybar, and springs) were shot. I replaced those and all the tires for around 1800 dollars, but unfortunately, the car still pulls to one side. I have also had to replace the water pump, radiator (twice), and fix a short of an exposed electrical bundle near the firewall. The transmission went out at 75K due to a leak at the transmission pan, which I unknowingly drove bone dry in inner city traffic. I had a used one put in for 1500 dollars, but the transmission pan still leaks. Additionally, the car leaks a quart of oil a month from the valve cover and needs a new timing chain gasket. The interior rattles and squeaks enough to make a man crazy.

I purchased this car with 86,000 miles from a certified dealership. Unfortunately, I have had some issues with it, including having to replace the transmission 4 times and the entire engine. While it has been a frustrating experience, I am still working to pay off the car. I would recommend doing some research before purchasing a Ford, as my experience has not been the best. Thank you for considering my experience.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with this car. I bought it with 76K miles and unfortunately had to replace a few things like the AC pump, AC hose, water pump, and starter (three times!). The suspension also needed some work. The power windows don't work, but overall it's been a reliable car. I have spent quite a bit on repairs, but I think it's been worth it. Thanks for listening!

Last month, I purchased a used 94 Ford Taurus GL with 84k miles in excellent condition for its age. I did a tune-up, replaced the tires, flushed the coolant, and replaced the air/gas filters while also using gas treatment. Unfortunately, after only 30 days, the transmission died. I was surprised to find that it was bone dry, and I have no idea how it lost all the oil. I park my car in the driveway, and there were no oil leaks, and the tune-up was performed. After reading postings on Taurus forums, I discovered that almost all Taurus/Sable cars suffer from transmission problems. I don't know how Ford could get away with Tauruses dying before 80k and still survive. This is my first American car, and I have always owned imports. I had to let my new car go since I lost my job, and I thought this Ford was going to be a great used car. Unfortunately, it was a bad choice. The engine is durable, but the transmission is not reliable.

The car has been amazing! It has given us very little trouble in the nine years we've had it, and we've only needed a few repairs. I would definitely recommend the Taurus!

I have been the proud owner of this car for a decade and I cannot speak highly enough of it. Equipped with a 5-speed and the reliable Yamaha 3.2, there is no task too difficult for this vehicle, all while maintaining an impressive fuel efficiency of 22 city/26 highway, even in today's world of high gas prices. I have only had to replace the clutch assembly, valve cover/manifold gaskets, and wires, in addition to regular maintenance such as oil/filters, tires (3 sets), batteries, and belts. Unfortunately, I will have to part with it soon, and I will surely miss it once it's gone.

I absolutely adore my parents' 1995 Ford Taurus GL, which is where I learned to drive. It was a tough car that could handle anything I threw at it. Recently, I purchased my own 1994 LX and I couldn't be happier with it. It has leather seats, a sunroof, power everything, and chrome wheels, all for a very reasonable price. I drive my Taurus every day, including on long trips between NY and PA, and even all the way to SC in 100-degree heat with passengers and luggage, and it never let me down. In fact, the only repair it ever needed was a transmission sensor.

I purchased this car with 50,000 miles on it back in '96. It has now reached an impressive 235,000 miles, which may be a record! Unfortunately, the AXOD transmission in this vehicle failed at 190,000 miles due to a design issue involving plastic parts. This was clearly a mistake on Ford's part. Although the transmission is now in need of another rebuild, I have decided not to invest in another one and will be retiring 'ol Betsy. Despite this setback, I must say that this car has served me incredibly well over the years. At 230,000 miles on the engine, it still runs great and doesn't burn oil, even in the winter. If it weren't for the transmission issue, I would definitely consider buying another one.

I'm so glad to hear about your positive experience with your '94 GL! Despite your initial skepticism about buying a car with 74K on it, it sounds like it has served you well with your 80 mile-a-day commute. It's great to hear that you've only had to spend $150 on repairs for a new tension pulley and serpentine belt, and that everything on the car still works. Plus, getting 25MPG back and forth to work and 30MPG on the highway is fantastic! Thank you for sharing your story.
