Common 2008 Ford Taurus problems
The 2008 Ford Taurus has generated 172 complaints with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, with the majority of these concerns related to powertrain and steering issues.
Powertrain complaints account for 43 of the total complaints, with drivers reporting transmission fluid leaks and jerking when shifting into park. This can be attributed to the transmission's design, which may not handle the stress of frequent shifting or heavy loads. The 2008 Ford Taurus is equipped with a 3.5L Cyclone V6 engine, which is known for its reliability; however, the transmission may not be as durable.
Steering complaints are the second most common issue, with 35 reports of problems related to the rack and pinion system. Drivers have reported the steering wheel separating from the shaft, with repairs costing around $1,000 and failure mileage as low as 31,000 miles. This issue can be attributed to the design and manufacturing of the steering system, which may not be robust enough to handle the stress of everyday driving.
Electrical complaints are less common but still significant, with 11 reports of the car losing power while in motion. This can be a serious safety issue, as it may leave the driver without power steering or brakes. The cause of these electrical issues is not explicitly stated in the search results, but they may be related to the wiring or electrical components within the vehicle.
Additionally, Consumer Reports lists several owner-reported trouble spots for the 2008 Ford Taurus, including the climate system, brakes, steering and suspension, transmission, paint and trim, exhaust, electrical accessories, and engine.
In summary, the 2008 Ford Taurus has several common problems related to the powertrain, steering, and electrical systems. These issues can lead to inconvenient and potentially dangerous situations for the driver. It is essential for owners of this vehicle to be aware of these common problems and address them promptly to ensure the safety and longevity of their vehicle.

I WAS IN A CURVE, AND THANKFULLY THERE WAS A STORE. IT TOOK ALL MY STRENGTH TO TURN THE CAR IN, AND SOMEHOW I WAS ABLE TO COME TO A STOP. I HAD NO WARNING, NO LIGHT CAME ON AND MY SON CAME TO SEE WHAT WAS WRONG. HE SAID IT WAS OVERHEATING. WE HAD IT TOWED HOME AND WHEN HE CHECKED IT THE OIL WAS CREAMY , WHITISH. HE HAD NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE IT. WE RESEARCHED IT, AND FOUND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE CYCLONE ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO THE WATER PUMP FAILING, WHICH IS INSIDE THE ENGINE ALONG WITH THE TIMING CHAIN!!! I WAS SHOCKED! WATER PUMPS GO BAD, EVERYONE KNOWS THAT. WHY WOULD ANY COMPANY PUT A WATER PUMP INSIDE THE MOTOR?!?! I NEVER WOULD HAVE BOUGHT IT IF I HAD KNOWN BECAUSE IT IS JUST WRONG. THEN I FOUND OUT FORD HAD BEEN USING THAT ENGINE FOR OVER 10 YEARS, EVEN WITH ALL THE COMPLAINTS AND I WONDER HOW MANY ACCIDENTS AND INJURIES AND DEATHS HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY THIS. I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED!!!! WHY IS THERE NO RECALL? I CAN'T AFFORD TO HAVE A NEW ENGINE PUT IN, I'M 63 AND DISABLED. I DON'T KNOW WHAT I AM GOING TO DO. WITH ALL THE CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURES DUE TO THIS, I AM SHOCKED THAT FORD HAS NOT HELPED US OUT. THEY MUST HAVE A LOT OF LAWSUITS. PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN, I AM SICK ABOUT IT.

- VIN: 1FAHP27W78G
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: ON 5/20/19 I FILLED UP MY FUEL TANK AND WHEN I RETURNED HOME I SMELLED GASOLINE. I LOOKED UNDER THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED THAT FUEL WAS LEAKING FROM THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANK ON TO THE GROUND. I IMMEDIATELY PUT DOWN ABSORBENT, PARKED THE VEHICLE ON A FLAT SURFACE OF MY DRIVEWAY AND PLACED A LARGE CATCH PAN UNDER THE VEHICLE WHERE THE FUEL WAS LEAKING. THE VEHICLE HAD PASSED EMISSIONS ABOUT 2 OR 3 MONTHS PRIOR THAT INCLUDES A TEST ON THE FUEL SYSTEM. THE AMOUNT THAT LEAKED OUT WAS APPROXIMATELY ONE HALF OF A LITER IN TOTAL THEN STOPPED. NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAS EVER COME ON AND THE FUEL LEAK ONLY HAPPENS WHEN I FILL THE TANK UNTIL THE GAS PUMP STOPS, I HAVEN'T FILLED THE TANK FULL AGAIN UNTIL YESTERDAY 9/17/19 WHEN I FILLED THE TANK FULL. AFTER THE FIRST LEAK WAS NOTICED I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO A MECHANIC THAT PUT THE CAR ON A LIFT AND DROPPED THE FUEL TANK PRESSURIZED IT AND COULD NOT FIND OUT WHERE THE FUEL WAS LEAKING FROM. HE INSTALLED A NEW SENDING UNIT AND FUEL PUMP GASKETS AND REINSTALLED THE FUEL TANK, FILLED THE TANK FULL AND NO LEAK WAS NOTICED. TO BE SAFE AND EASE MY MIND I DIDN'T FILL THE TANK FULL UNTIL YESTERDAY 9/17/19 WHEN I NOTED THE LEAK AGAIN. THE MECHANIC SAID HE DIDN'T NOTICE ANY PREMATURE WEAR ON THE FUEL TANK OR ANY OF THE COMPONENTS WHEN I BROUGHT IT TO HIM. I SPOKE TO ANOTHER MECHANIC TODAY AND HE SAID IT COULD POSSIBLY BE A FAULTY EMISSIONS VALVE THAT IS LOCATED ON TOP OF THE TANK. I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT ON 9/20/19 TO HAVE THE VEHICLE CHECKED OUT AGAIN. I AM CHECKING HERE TO SEE IF OTHERS HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE AND IF A RECALL WAS EVER AVAILABLE AND IF NOT TOO ADD THIS TO COMPLAINTS.

I have been a loyal Honda owner my entire life, so stepping outside of that field was a huge challenge for me. However, I am pleased to say that I am extremely satisfied with my decision! My wife's 2000 Honda Odyssey finally gave out, and I wanted to move her into a smaller vehicle, specifically an Accord. Unfortunately, we had no Accords that fit our budget at the time, and I was not comfortable putting her in a Hyundai or Toyota. The 2008 Ford Taurus Limited was my only other option, and what a pleasant surprise it turned out to be! We absolutely love the performance and ride quality. The only things we wish it had were Bluetooth and a sunroof. Overall, it's a fantastic car!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that I noticed your rear brakes needed replacement at 40,000 miles, while the front ones lasted until 60,000 miles. Recently, at 89,000 miles, I smelt burning oil while driving and found out that the rear differential seal was gone. It was a bit of a hassle, as it took 2 days to fix, and there was also a minor engine oil leak. However, overall, I still think it's a good car!

I bought this car a year ago and have driven it for 22,000 miles since then. I must say, it has been an amazing experience. The car is quite large, but the ride and handling are better than what I expected from a car of this class. Although it's not a speed demon, the acceleration is very good and the ride is smooth. The car is also very comfortable, quiet and rides well. I was considering the Avalon, but I wanted a large car with AWD and back up sensors. The safety factor, visibility, and the fact that the ride and quietness are comparable to the Avalon won me over. The car has been very cheap to own and trouble-free. After driving German cars for the last 10 years, this has been a refreshing change. I love the bold looks, even with the over-the-top use of chrome. The mileage on the highway is very good and in the city, it's okay.

I bought this car to give to my daughter, but I have ended up driving it the most. It's not the most sporty car to ride in, but it's comfortable, quiet, and dependable. It also gets good mileage. One of the best features is the huge trunk, and the rear and front passenger seats fold flat, which is really convenient. One time, we filled the trunk with luggage and when we arrived at our destination, we decided to treat ourselves and take a stretch limo from the airport to the hotel. However, the driver almost broke his trunk lid (and our luggage) in the process. I suggested that he trade the limo for a stretch Taurus instead.

John Force suggested we 'Drive one.' I'm happy we did. This car is one of the most comfortable we've ever owned. It's a Limited and has everything except a sunroof, which I don't need. We purchased it as an unsold '08 in 2009 and got a fantastic deal. So far, we've driven 6,000 miles with no issues. Although my wife calls it an old man's car, she hasn't seen me nail it when I drive alone. It really moves! Passengers have complimented the car's comfort. The interior room and trunk space are fantastic. I adore the hands-free Sync phone and satellite radio. While the styling could be improved, these days... I'll never be satisfied with a look-alike car. Nevertheless, I'll purchase another one. Perhaps next time, the SHO. Take John Force's advice and 'Drive one!'

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my thoughts on the car I recently purchased. It's a replacement for my 2005 500 SE with the CVT transmission. I must say, the new engine and transmission are a significant improvement for everyday driving, and the ride is much softer and quieter too. The interior is also a lot better, with richer-looking woodgrains and improved fit and finish. However, I do have a bit of disappointment with the exterior. I preferred the look of the 500, especially the rear end, which looks a bit plainer on the 08 Taurus. The 500 also had body side moldings that helped protect the sides of the car and broke up the tallness and plainness. Unfortunately, it seems like many new cars are lacking these features, which may be a way for manufacturers to save money. Lastly, I think it would be a nice touch to have a glovebox light. Thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts!

I recently purchased a SEL with leather and Interior Convenience Package. I have noticed that some reviews state that the MPG is 30 or higher, but at 9000 miles, the best I have achieved is 18-19 MPG in the city and 23-24 MPG on the highway at a cruise control speed of 65. Can anyone share any tips on how to improve this? While I agree that the ride on the highway is very smooth and nice, I have experienced a loud thump in the right rear and left front when driving on roads with some rather insignificant bumps in the city. Unfortunately, the dealer has informed me that this is a carryover from the 500 model design and cannot be fixed. This is very disappointing and takes away from the overall driving pleasure.

My Ford Taurus SEL 2008 has not given me the outstanding mileage that some people claim. Despite being a conservative driver, I only get around 14 mpg in the city and around 17 mpg when driving out to Valley Stream (Nassau County) at an average speed of 55 mph. However, I must say that this car is comfortable and has great interior and trunk space. While the cabin is not always quiet, it is still a pleasant ride on pristine roadways. In areas like the Bronx where the roads are not as smooth, the cabin can be noisy and make it difficult to listen to the radio.
