  • Summary: Someone pulled out in front of me as I was slowing down to make a left turn. I T-boned their vehicle while going 35mph, resulting in a total loss for my 2000 Ford Taurus. (This was in 2018 so it was not a new car). My driver steering wheel airbag DID NOT deploy. I was wearing my seat belt. I still have chest pains when I sneeze and cough, even 4 years later (in November 2022, at time of writing), and in the last year (2021) received a cortisone shot in my left shoulder. I was offered a neck brace in the ambulance and was prescribed an arm sling in the hospital. I was diagnosed with whiplash. I believe I was given pain medication. Someone from the NHTSA in Indiana contacted me and we spoke briefly about it that week, so this may have been previously reported to this agency. I only found out this week that the 2000 Ford Taurus had a history of airbag issues, which is why I bring this up now. I think the car has already been scrapped, so no chance of examination unfortunately. As above, my safety was in jeopardy. Had I been going faster, I could have died. (Apparently someone DID die from a faulty Taurus front airbag.) I, to this day, have chest pain down to my elbows when I sneeze or cough. My doctor says it's a musculoskeletal strain. Ford has not issued recalls for airbags. The vehicle was declared totaled on scene by the police officer and then towed by a towing service. The towing service said the undeployed airbag was "a ticking time bomb" and really unsafe to attempt to repair. I sent pictures to the at-fault driver's insurance, so it was also inspected by insurance. I do not remember any seeing warning messages. I would have checked any unfamiliar warnings or dash lights. Side note: For number of injured, I think I was the only one to take an ambulance. At-fault driver first hesitated to call 911, but eventually did. There were two people in his car, including himself: driver, and passenger in front seat.

THIS HAPPENED SOMETIME IN 2004 AND I CAN STILL REMEMBER THE EXACT LOCATION ON HWY 59. IT'S A DAY I DOUBT I EVER FORGET. I REMEMBER THE MECHANIC TELLING ME A FRONT SPRING SHOULD NEVER FAIL. HE SAID THERE WERE NO CURRENT RECALLS, SO I WAS STUCK WITH THE BILL. I REMEMBER BEING FURIOUS WITH FORD NOT ONLY BECAUSE MY FAMILY NEARLY DIED, BUT BECAUSE THEY WOULDN'T OWN UP TO SOMETHING THAT SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN. HERE IT IS NEARLY 12 YEARS LATER, AND I FOUND AN INVOICE FROM 2008 FOR NEW STRUTS AND SWAY BARS THAT COST ME NEARLY $1,000. I CAN'T HELP BUT THINK THAT BILL WAS SOMEHOW RELATED TO WHAT HAPPENED WHEN MY SPRING BROKE IN 2004, BUT MAYBE NOT. BASED ON THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS, I FEEL IT IS TIME FOR THE RECALL TO BE EXPANDED TO INCLUDE OTHER FORD OWNERS, ESPECIALLY SINCE WE ARE ALL DEALING WITH THE SAME EXACT ISSUE.     Although I had some issues with my Taurus, I can confidently say that my first Ford, an Escort, was a great car. I mistakenly thought getting the Taurus would be a step up. Despite the engine failure at 114K and again at 140K, I replaced the engine and received a 75K guarantee. Although I had to rent a car since there was no loaner provided, I was able to trade it in on an Impala. I have heard from my mechanic that the engine has failed in the year since I traded it in, but I am still confident in my decision to switch to a different car brand.

    I really enjoyed driving this car. It was so powerful and agile, and the weight of the metal made me feel safe and secure. Even on snowy roads, the traction control kept me in control. However, after putting 70k miles on it (bought with 40k), the car started to fall apart. I had to spend $500-800 a month on maintenance, and the door lock latch would sometimes not shut in cold weather. The engine lights would go on, the A/C compressor died, and there was carbon buildup in the manifold that no cleaner could fix. While I might consider buying another Taurus, I would recommend buying one with only 12k miles and trading it in at 60k. That way, you won't have to keep it on life support.

    Although my 2000 Ford Taurus SEL has been a bit of a financial burden, I must say that it has some impressive features. The 22-valve, v-6 engine is powerful and well-built, and the front crash tests rated 5 stars. Despite the fact that I have spent at least $5,000 on repairs since purchasing it for $9,500 in 2004, including rear springs, main engine seal, wheel bearings, ball joints, emissions control assembly, break overhauls, heater malfunctions, etc., I still believe that it was a good investment. It just failed the MA state inspection for emissions -- again! However, I understand that with 130,000 miles on the clock, it may be time to consider selling the car and moving on to something newer.

    I will never buy another Ford again. This vehicle had its first transmission and power steering pump replaced after 40k miles, and its second factory rebuilt transmission went at 103k miles. Additionally, the power steering was replaced at 85k miles, along with the air conditioning compressor. This vehicle has been the worst in terms of maintenance that I have ever owned.

    In 2000, my wife and I purchased this car. While the ride and comfort level are good, we have experienced numerous problems with our Ford Taurus. Unfortunately, our new car had a leak in the steering pump, a leak in the ABS, and the ABS pump needed to be replaced. We also had a leak on the interior passenger side. Despite sending several letters to Ford Motor, we never received a response. As someone who previously owned a Chevy and wanted to stay with domestic cars, I am disappointed with the level of service provided by Ford. It is unfortunate that they have lost another good customer.

    My dad gave me his Ford SES FFV with 70 thousand miles on it, and I drove it all the way from California to Texas. The car handles really well on windy days and loves to drive at freeway speed for hours at a time. During the trip, I got about 30MPG. I also have a 2000 Toyota Corolla, but I have to say that the Ford feels more solid. Although I was a bit apprehensive about driving it due to its reputation for problems, I haven't had any issues so far. It's worth noting that the car has had some recalls and fuel pump failures in the past, as seen in the repair history kept by my dad. The Toyota, on the other hand, has had none. Only time will tell, but for now, I'm enjoying driving my dad's Ford.

    I drive an average of 18K miles per year and have had very few issues with my car. I've only had to replace one vacuum hose, change the tires a few times, and replace the driver's side power mirror after a deer ran into me. The shocks, plugs, and A/C charge are all still original. Unfortunately, the cigar lighter circuit shorted out this week, so my GPS won't charge, and the power door locks failed a few years ago. Additionally, the cruise control no longer resumes. However, I have no major complaints about my car, even though it's over ten years old and has over 180K miles on it.

    This wagon has over 100k miles and is a great suburban hauler, perfect for shopping and transporting two 80 lbs dogs. The mileage is decent, but the brakes could use an upgrade (consider Baer or Sho). The rear springs are too soft, especially for a wagon, but upgrading the shocks/struts can improve handling. There has been some minor front end work, but no engine/transmission problems (unlike prior models). While cheaper than European wagons, there aren't many aftermarket goods available. There is some torque steer, but the acceleration is decent. The tapered rear entry may limit the size of some items that can be transported. Unfortunately, the front coil was replaced at 30k and broke at 70k, causing a punctured tire on a freeway curve and almost hitting the wall!
