SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-02-02
- VIN: 1FACP55U2NG
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: THE VEHICLE IS A 1992 FORD TAURUS WAGON. ON JULY 26, 1996 THE COIL SPRINGS BROKE PUNCTURING THE FRONT TIRE WHILE BACKING OUT OF THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT OF MIDAS FOR AN OIL CHANGE. FORD AT THE TIME SAID THERE WERE NO RECALLS ON THE VEHICLE SO THEREFORE IT WAS REPAIRED AT MIDAS. THIS MORNING, FEBRUARY 3, 2005 THE COIL SPRINGS AGAIN BROKE PUNCTURING THE DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT TIRE AND WILL AGAIN NEED NECESSARY REPAIRS TOTALLY APPROXIMATELY $450.00. CALLED FORD SAID THERE WERE NEVER ANY RECALLS ON THIS YEAR VEHICLE BUT INFORMATION FROM THE INTERNET INDICATED THAT FORD MOTOR COMPANY RECALLED NEARLY 900,000 FORD TAURUS AND MERCURY SABLE 1999, 2000, AND 2001 SEDANS STATING IN COLD WEATHER STATES SALT FROM ROADS COULD CORRODE AND FRACTURE THE CARS' FRONT COIL SPRINGS AND THEY WERE INSTALLING PROTECTIVE SHIELDS IN THE RECALLED VEHICLES. MY CONCERN IS THAT EVEN THOUGH THIS MODEL IS OLDER AND THERE WERE NO RECALLS WHAT IS THE SAFETY OF DRIVING THIS VEHICLE? I WONDER WHAT THE OUTCOME WOULD BE HAD THIS VEHICLE HAD THE COIL SPRING BREAK WHILE ON THE FREEWAY...WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE CAR? THE SAFETY OF THIS VEHICLE GREATLY CONCERNS US.*JB

AFTER THE CAR WAS HOISTED ONTO A FLATBED TRUCK I NOTICED THAT THE ENGINE CRADLE HAD DISCONNECTED FROM THE FRAME AT TWO POINTS JUST ABOUT ONE-THIRD OF THE WAY BACK FROM THE FRONT OF THE CAR AND HAD DROPPED DOWN ABOUT 6 INCHES. THE TWO MOUNTING BOLTS WERE POINTING UPWARD FROM THE CONNECTING POINTS ON THE ENGINE CRADLE. I HAD THE CAR TAKEN TO THE FORD DEALER WHERE I HAD PURCHASED IT. THEY SAID THERE WAS $1200.00 IN DAMAGES AND THAT FORD DOES NOT HAVE A PROGRAM IN PLACE OFFERING NO-COST REPAIR OF THE FAILURE. I CONTACTED FORD AND THEY CONFIRMED THAT. 1992 Ford Taurus recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 1992 Ford Taurus.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, KANSAS, KENTUCKY, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEBRASKA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGNIA, AND WISCONSIN. THE REAR LOWER SUBFRAME MOUNT PLATE NUT CAN EXPERIENCE STRESS CORROSION CRACKING IF SUBJECTED TO LONG TERM EXPOSURE TO ROAD SALTS. THIS CAN RESULT IN FRACTURE AND LOSS OF THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF THE SUBFRAME MOUNT ATTACHMENT. DETACHMENT OF THE BODY MOUNTS AT THE REAR CORNERS OF THE SUBFRAME, WHICH SUPPORTS THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION, ALLOWS THE REAR CORNERS OF THE SUBFRAME TO DROP.
- Consequence: IF BOTH REAR CORNERS DROP, STEERING WOULD BECOME SUDDENLY VERY DIFFICULT, AFFECTING VEHICLE CONTROL AND INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL SUBFRAME REAR MOUNT BOLTS, REINFORCEMENT PLATES, AND PLATE NUTS.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 3.8L ENGINES AND ORIGINALLY SOLD OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE FOLLOWING STATES: ALASKA, COLORADO, IOWA, IDAHO, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, KANSAS, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, MONTANA, NORTH DAKOTA, NEBRASKA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, SOUTH DAKOTA, VERMONT, WISCONSIN, AND WYOMING. WATER CAN ACCUMULATE WITHIN THE SPEED CONTROL CABLE CONDUIT. IF ENOUGH WATER ACCUMULATES, IT COULD FREEZE WITHIN A LOW AREA OF THE CABLE ROUTING WHEN EXPOSED TO A LONG TERM COLD SOAK AT TEMPERATURES AT LEAST SEVERAL DEGREES BELOW FREEZING.
- Consequence: DRIVER CONTROL OF VEHICLE SPEED USING THE SPEED CONTROL SYSTEM OR THE ACCELERATOR CONTROL SYSTEM WOULD BE DIMINISHED INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL ADD A BOOT TO THE SPEED CONTROL CABLE.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:COOLING SYSTEM:FAN
- Summary: THESE VEHICLES ARE ORIGINALLY SOLD OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE FOLLOWING STATES: ALASKA, IOWA, MINNESOTA, NEBRASKA, NORTH DAKOTA, AND SOUTH DAKOTA. THE VEHICLES INVOLVED ARE 1992-1994 TEMPO/TOPAZ VEHICLES WITH 3.0L ENGINES; 1994 TEMPO/TOPAZ WITH 2.3L ENGINES; 1992-1995 TAURUS/SABLE WITH 3.8L ENGINES; 1994-1995 TAURUS/SABLE WITH 3.0L ENGINES AND 1992-1994 LINCOLN CONTINENTAL VEHICLES WITH 3.8L ENGINES. DURING HIGH WINDS, HEAVY, BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW, AND LOW TEMPERATURES, THE ENGINE COOLING FAN CAN BECOME BLOCKED OR FROZEN WITH SNOW. THE FAN MOTOR MAY NOT ROTATE AND COULD OVERHEAT.
- Consequence: THIS CONDITION CAN CAUSE SMOKE OR FLAMES FROM THE FAN AND/OR SHROUD, THE FAN ELECTRICAL WIRING, OR THE FAN MOTOR RESULTING IN A VEHICLE FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL AN ELECTRICAL JUMPER HARNESS CONTAINING AN AUTOMATIC RESETTING CIRCUIT BREAKER TO PROTECT THE FAN MOTOR LOW SPEED CIRCUITRY FROM OVERHEATING.
- Manufacturer: MONROE AUTO CORP.
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:SHOCK ABSORBER
- Summary: THE ARC WELDS ON THE SWAY BAR BRACKET, WHERE IT ATTACHES TO THE STRUT RESERVE TUBE, DID NOT FUSE PROPERLY.
- Consequence: OVER TIME, A PORTION OF THE BRACKET CAN TEAR AWAY FROM THE STRUT, FALLING INTO AND PUNCTURING THE TIRE OR CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE WHEEL, WHICH COULD RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT.
- Remedy: MONROE DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE STRUT FREE OF CHARGE.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: CHILDREN CAN ACCIDENTALLY LOCK THEMSELVES IN THE FOOTWELL AREA OF THE REAR-FACING THIRD SEAT, OR IN THE STORAGE COMPARTMENT IN STATION WAGONS NOT EQUIPPED WITH AN OPTIONAL THIRD SEAT. ONCE THE COMPARTMENT IS CLOSED IT CANNOT BE OPENED FROM THE INSIDE.
- Consequence: THERE IS A DANGER OF AIR DEPRIVATION, HYPERTHERMIA,AND/OR PANIC RESPONSE TO A CHILD WHO HAS LOCKED HIMSELF OR HERSELF INTO THECOMPARTMENT, WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF ASPHYXIATION.
- Remedy: REPLACE THE SELF-LATCHING ASSEMBLY CURRENTLY USED IN THE REAR STORAGE COMPARTMENT WITH A LATCH ASSEMBLY THAT CAN ONLY BE CLOSED WITH A KEY.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: STRUCTURE:BODY:HATCHBACK/LIFTGATE:SUPPORT DEVICE/STRUT
- Summary: MANUFACTURING ERRORS BY THE SUPPLIER OF THE LIFTGATE LATCH MECHANISM MAY CAUSE THE SECONDARY PORTION OF THE LIFTGATE LATCH NOT TO FUNCTION. IF THE LATCH IS NOT IN THE PRIMARY LATCH POSITION, THE LIFTGATE COULD OPEN WITHOUT OPERATOR ACTION.
- Consequence: IF THE LIFTGATE WERE TO OPEN DURING VEHCILE OPERATION,PASSENGERS OR CARGO COULD FALL FROM THE OPEN LIFTGATE.
- Remedy: REPLACE MALFUNCTIONING LIFTGATE LATCHES.
Negative 1992 Ford Taurus car reviews
Positive 1992 Ford Taurus car reviews

We bought the car used for only $500 dollars. I know, at that price and age, things can go wrong. However, we've had it for almost a year now and it still starts and runs smoothly. We did have to do two repairs on it, but nothing too serious - just an oil leak and a MAF sensor. Other than those two things, it runs great. So, I feel confident letting my teens drive it because it's a big and dependable car.
-
The car starts flawlessly every time and the heater warms up fast. The 3.0 liter engine and automatic transmission accelerate and shift swiftly and smoothly, providing a quiet and smooth ride. While there is some roll when cornering hard and fast, which is to be expected from a wagon, the handling is very good, especially in panic moves or stops. The braking is also very good. The interior is roomy and can legitimately fit 8 passengers. The ergonomics are excellent and the seats are comfortable. The original sound system is also very good. In terms of reliability, I have had no problems since I have serviced it regularly as suggested. I replaced the tires and wheel alignment at 57000 mi and the front pads at 62000 mi. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with this car.
-
Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my Taurus. I purchased it a decade ago and it's still going strong! It's been the most dependable car I've ever owned and has never left me stranded. Even after several rear-end accidents, my Taurus has taken the impact with minimal damage to both the car and myself. Although the body style changed in the late 90s, I still prefer my model as it's roomier on the inside. If you're looking for a comfortable and dependable car, I highly recommend the Taurus! Best regards, Debbie

I bought this car brand new in January 1992 and ran it for over 188,000 miles. I just sold it (December 2003) to someone at work, and the car is still in great condition both body and mechanically. It has the 3.0-liter V-6 that is virtually indestructible as long as you maintain it. The original transmission finally went out at 160,000 miles. There is only minor rust on the bottom of the car's tailgate, and it was used in the Chicago area the entire time. I only sold it because I got a great deal on a new SUV. I will miss it, but I am sure it will give good use to the new owners.

I bought my 1992 Taurus GL back in May 2003 and I'm happy to say that I haven't had any major mechanical issues with it, which is quite surprising given that it's almost at 150k miles. However, for those of us with bench seating in the front, I highly recommend getting a floor tray for your drinks to avoid any spills that could damage your radio. Although I love the car's strong visual styling, the fit and finish could be improved. The plastic parts tend to rattle quite a bit, but considering that I only paid $1000 for it, I won't feel too bad if it fails on me.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with a car I bought from a private owner in 1998. It had 71,000 miles on it at the time, and I put another 70,000 on it before selling it in 2001. I have to say, the Yamaha 3.0 liter engine is truly one of the finest 24v V-6's ever made. It's a shame they stopped making it. However, I did have some issues with the Taurus guts. They were a total piece of garbage. Despite spending thousands to keep the car in perfect condition, it still had some small problems when I sold it. It ate through struts, brakes, batteries, clutches, and had a myriad of electrical problems. Overall, it was a great car, but I wouldn't recommend it due to the issues I had. Thanks for listening!

This is a decent value for a used car, but unfortunately, it seems to have some issues. After reaching around 70k miles, it blew a head gasket, which was unexpected given its previous care by my grandmother. Since I purchased it, it has required a lot of maintenance, including nearly $500 in repairs and the need for a new head gasket and transmission repairs, which could cost up to $1500 each. It's disappointing to have to deal with these problems, but I think it's time to move on and find a more reliable vehicle.

We purchased this car for our college-bound daughter, but unfortunately, it has been giving us a lot of trouble. Despite getting it fixed once, it broke down again due to multiple issues such as a blown head gasket, leaking radiator, and transmission problems. However, we are confident in our decision to get rid of it as advised by a knowledgeable mechanic. Although we paid $500 more than we should have, we believe it was a worthwhile investment. The repair bill may be high, but we are willing to pay it to ensure our daughter's safety and well-being.

It's reliable, starts up every time, and gets me through winter with no problem. It just needs a little love and care, and it will last forever.

Hi there! I noticed that your car has had a few repairs done, including the back struts, radiator fan, air conditioning compressor and clutch, throttle body, transmission, ignition, radio, side molding on the driver's side seat, and some front end work. It sounds like you've had a bit of a rough time with it. I hope things are going better now!
