The first generation Audi A4 (known internally as the Typ 8D) debuted in October 1994, with production starting November 1994 and European sales commencing in January 1995 for the 1995 model year. North American sales later began in September 1995 for the 1996 model year. It was built on the Volkswagen Group B5 (PL45) platform, which it shared with the fourth generation Volkswagen Passat (B5, Typ 3B). It had a front-mounted longitudinal engine and front-wheel drive. Many variations of the A4 were also available with Audi's quattro four-wheel drive system. The A4 was initially introduced as a four-door saloon/sedan; the Avant (estate/wagon) was introduced in November 1995 and went on sale in February 1996.
Development began in 1988, with the first design sketches being created later that year. By 1991, an exterior design by Imre Hasanic was chosen and frozen for November 1994 production by 1992. The interior design was later finalized in 1992, with pilot production commencing in the first half of 1994. Development concluded in the third quarter of 1994, preceding November 1994 start of production.
A wide range of engines were available in European markets, between 1.6 and 2.8 litres for petrol engines; and a 1.9-litre diesel engine available with Volkswagen Group's VE technology, capable of achieving a 90 PS (66 kW; 89 bhp) or 110 PS (81 kW; 108 bhp). The 2.6 and 2.8-litre V6 engines which had been carried over from the old 80/90 proved popular, although in North America, the 2.8-litre engine was the only V6 that was available there until 1997. A 2.4-liter version was developed especially for the Thai market, where import duty jumped from 60 to 100 percent on cars of over 2,400 cc displacement.
The Audi A4 was the first model in the Volkswagen Group to feature the new 1.8-litre 20v engine with five valves per cylinder, based on the unit Audi Sport had developed for their Supertouring race car. A turbocharged 1.8T version produced 150 PS (110 kW; 148 bhp) and 210 N⋅m (155 lb⋅ft) torque. Moreover, a quattro GmbH special edition of the B5 1.8T was later available in Germany and Europe, for which the engine's power output was raised to 180 PS (132 kW; 178 bhp) and 235 N⋅m (173 lb⋅ft). Five-valve technology was also added to a reengineered V6 family of engines in 1997, starting with the 2.8-litre V6 30v, which now produced 193 PS (142 kW; 190 bhp), followed by a 2.4-litre V6 which was a downsize from the previous 2.6 litre, 150 hp (112 kW) engine, but with a power increase to 165 PS (121 kW; 163 bhp).
Audi also debuted their new tiptronic automatic transmission on the B5 platform, based on the unit Porsche developed for their 964-generation 911. The transmission is a conventional automatic gearbox with a torque converter offering the driver a fully-automatic operation or manual selection of the gear ratios.
The B5 marked Audi's continued move into the midsize luxury car segment, having started this trajectory notably with later model years of the preceding Audi 80/90 B4. Despite initial mechanical problems, overall build and assembly quality were lauded both by the automotive press and within Audi and Volkswagen, and at the time, parent company Volkswagen declared the B5 the company-wide build quality benchmark for all its other models.

- Summary: 2021 I brought an Audi A4 Quattro 2.0 2008 after having a test drive and haven't looked over the mechanic just said it was the fuel pressure high pressure sensor that was not a big deal after an hour buying it it took it to see my mom and it quit on me I had to have it towed home it would not start I took it to the mechanic and the mechanic said the same thing that it was a high pressure fuel pressure sensor so I purchased one and put on it couple months later it did the same thing the check engine light came on and it was told it was fuel pressure high pressure sensor again so I changed a fuel sensor two fuel pumps in the engine to electrical fuel pumps in the back four sensors camshaft sensor the cam follower PPC valves body throttle can follower engine light still comes on the car does not want to seem like it wants to accelerate when it gets to the normal temperature save your driving for 10 or 15 minutes still normal temperature not the radio the temperature it will start to cut off the RPM drops very fast I also have put in a fuel pressure regulator and a fuel pressure filter just the other day it came out again saying the same thing p0089 Dakota's always been throwing ever since I brought the car and p 02993 it says performance one and performance too I have put a lot of money in to get in this car fixed in the I believe there is something wrong with with the fuel system in the cars they need to be on a recall

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SEAT SPLIT AT THE SEAM. LATER THAT DAY, WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY, THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT SPONTANEOUSLY BURNED A SECOND HOLE IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE PASSENGER SEAT ON/OFF SWITCH WAS IN THE OFF POSITION DURING BOTH INCIDENTS. IN AN ATTEMPT TO CORRECT THE FAILURE, THE CONTACT REMOVED THE FUSE WITHIN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT. CAROUSEL MOTORS (809 IA-1, IOWA CITY, IOWA 52244, (319) 354-2550) WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURES, BUT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. - Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2005-2008 Audi A4 Sedan, A4 Avant, S4 Avant and S4 Sedan, 2007-2008 RS4 Sedan, 2004 RS4 Cabriolet, 2007-2009 A4 Cabriolet and S4 Cabriolet, 2005-2011 A6 Sedan, 2006-2011 A6 Avant, and 2007-2011 S6 Sedan vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Audi has notified owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag with an alternate remedy part, free of charge. The recall began June 29, 2018. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69R7. Note: This recall supersedes recalls 16V382, 17V032 and 18V004 and includes vehicles that may have had their air bag previously replaced under one of those campaigns.

I'm so glad I leased this car! After a year of ownership, I only had one issue with a brake light sensor, but the dealer fixed it right away. The highway mileage is fantastic, although the pure city driving gives poorer mileage than I had hoped. However, the power and handling are the best! This is definitely the most fun car I've ever driven, and the trunk space is the best of all the convertibles I tested.

The car is fantastic, extremely fast, and has a couple of minor issues. Firstly, in deep snow, the car is too low, so although it maintains excellent traction, snow builds up underneath, limiting its ability to go through more than 8-10

Purchased with 8000 miles. I upgraded from a 2001 Maxima and I must say, this car is great! I have no complaints. It's very cozy and quick, and there are so many electronics that I sometimes get lost in the car (which is actually a good thing). The gas mileage is terrific, averaging about 23 overall, and I even got 36 on a 400 mile highway trip. The only downside is that the wheels are a little hard to keep clean of brake dust. Overall, I have never driven a car so perfect!

Congratulations on your first Audi! I can understand your initial concerns about switching to a 4 cyl. car, but it's great to hear that you're pleasantly surprised with the 2.0T. While there may be a slight lag pulling out into traffic, it sounds like you're overall very happy with your choice. The fit and finish of the car are superb, and it looks fantastic too. I hope you continue to enjoy your Audi and all the adventures it takes you on!

I bought my Audi CPO 3 months and 2K miles ago and I absolutely love it! So far, I haven't had any issues - knock on wood. The 6-speed manual makes it a blast to drive and the interior is luxurious. The only downside is that the armrest covers the parking brake and I've accidentally hit my elbow on it a few times. Unfortunately, the armrest lid latch broke, but luckily the dealer replaced it under warranty. Overall, I'm having a lot of fun driving my Audi. Before purchasing it, I test drove two G35's and three 328i's, but I don't regret choosing the Audi for a second. While the Infinity and BMW had more power, the A4 was just more enjoyable to drive. The G35 had too much plastic in the cockpit and the BMW felt too refined - like I was just along for the ride.
