2016 Audi A4 problems

The Audi A4 is a line of luxury compact executive cars produced since 1994 by the German car manufacturer Audi, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. The A4 has been built in five generations and is based on the Volkswagen Group B platform. The first generation A4 succeeded the Audi 80. The automaker's internal numbering treats the A4 as a continuation of the Audi 80 lineage, with the initial A4 designated as the B5-series, followed by the B6, B7, B8, and the B9.

The B8 and B9 versions of the A4 are built on the Volkswagen Group MLB platform shared with several models and brands across the Volkswagen Group. The Audi A4 automobile layout consists of a front-engine design, with transaxle-type transmissions mounted at the rear of the engine. The cars are front-wheel drive, or on some models, "quattro" all-wheel drive. The A4 is available as a sedan and station wagon. Historically, the second (B6) and third generations (B7) of the A4 also included a convertible version. For the fourth generation (B8) and onwards, the convertible, along with a new coupé and 5-door liftback variant, was spun-off by Audi into a new nameplate called the Audi A5.

B5 (Typ 8D; 1994)

The first generation Audi A4 (known internally as the Typ 8D) debuted in October 1994, with production starting November 1994 and European sales commencing in January 1995 for the 1995 model year. North American sales later began in September 1995 for the 1996 model year. It was built on the Volkswagen Group B5 (PL45) platform, which it shared with the fourth generation Volkswagen Passat (B5, Typ 3B). It had a front-mounted longitudinal engine and front-wheel drive. Many variations of the A4 were also available with Audi's quattro four-wheel drive system. The A4 was initially introduced as a four-door saloon/sedan; the Avant (estate/wagon) was introduced in November 1995 and went on sale in February 1996.

Development began in 1988, with the first design sketches being created later that year. By 1991, an exterior design by Imre Hasanic was chosen and frozen for November 1994 production by 1992. The interior design was later finalized in 1992, with pilot production commencing in the first half of 1994. Development concluded in the third quarter of 1994, preceding November 1994 start of production.

A wide range of engines were available in European markets, between 1.6 and 2.8 litres for petrol engines; and a 1.9-litre diesel engine available with Volkswagen Group's VE technology, capable of achieving a 90 PS (66 kW; 89 bhp) or 110 PS (81 kW; 108 bhp). The 2.6 and 2.8-litre V6 engines which had been carried over from the old 80/90 proved popular, although in North America, the 2.8-litre engine was the only V6 that was available there until 1997. A 2.4-liter version was developed especially for the Thai market, where import duty jumped from 60 to 100 percent on cars of over 2,400 cc displacement.

The Audi A4 was the first model in the Volkswagen Group to feature the new 1.8-litre 20v engine with five valves per cylinder, based on the unit Audi Sport had developed for their Supertouring race car. A turbocharged 1.8T version produced 150 PS (110 kW; 148 bhp) and 210 N⋅m (155 lb⋅ft) torque. Moreover, a quattro GmbH special edition of the B5 1.8T was later available in Germany and Europe, for which the engine's power output was raised to 180 PS (132 kW; 178 bhp) and 235 N⋅m (173 lb⋅ft). Five-valve technology was also added to a reengineered V6 family of engines in 1997, starting with the 2.8-litre V6 30v, which now produced 193 PS (142 kW; 190 bhp), followed by a 2.4-litre V6 which was a downsize from the previous 2.6 litre, 150 hp (112 kW) engine, but with a power increase to 165 PS (121 kW; 163 bhp).

Audi also debuted their new tiptronic automatic transmission on the B5 platform, based on the unit Porsche developed for their 964-generation 911. The transmission is a conventional automatic gearbox with a torque converter offering the driver a fully-automatic operation or manual selection of the gear ratios.

The B5 marked Audi's continued move into the midsize luxury car segment, having started this trajectory notably with later model years of the preceding Audi 80/90 B4. Despite initial mechanical problems, overall build and assembly quality were lauded both by the automotive press and within Audi and Volkswagen, and at the time, parent company Volkswagen declared the B5 the company-wide build quality benchmark for all its other models.

Negative 2016 Audi A4 car reviews

  1. Zack Lindgren 2024-11-16

The car drives very nicely, and the ride is good. However, the acceleration from a stop or slow speed can be unreliable, which can be concerning. It's important to be cautious when accelerating. We will consider returning to Mercedes for our next car.

  2. Adrien Smith 2024-08-25

I experienced some issues with my Audi, including a safety recall for the electric coolant pump and a steering system failure. I have been driving the car with the pump disconnected for four months and am concerned about the longevity of the turbocharger. Recently, I also had trouble opening the fuel gate and received error codes P2293 and P053F. Due to the high cost of repairs, I am considering selling the car. The Audi dealer recommended a timing chain replacement for $2500, but I had other fluids changed at a certified mechanical shop using Audi OEM fluids. The transmission, differentials, transfer case, and brake fluid were all changed, and a sample of the transmission and transfer case fluids were found to be in poor condition and in need of replacement. It is worth noting that Audi suggests only changing the engine oil, as the other fluids are covered by a lifetime warranty.

  3. Neal Eichmann 2024-06-29

I recently rented this car for a week and unfortunately, my experience was not great. The base model with the S-Line package and navigation had a few extras, but I found the driving experience to be unpleasant. The CVT was an obvious annoyance and the interior, instrumentation, and controls were mediocre and old-fashioned. Although it wasn't as antiquated as a Subaru, it seemed like a step down from even a VW, which is disappointing considering the cost. I was puzzled as to why anyone would cross-shop this car with a similarly priced BMW 3 Series. While I'm not a BMW fanboy, the two vehicles offer incompatible driving experiences, yet they are about the same price. Audi is supposed to be the premium arm of VW, but this car is easily bested in this segment by many alternatives. Fortunately, the 2017 model is a complete redesign.

  4. Cleve Kerluke 2024-04-26

I've owned a variety of car brands, from Japanese to domestic, but unfortunately, my experience with this particular car has been the worst. Initially, I was drawn to its sleek appearance, impressive handling, and performance. However, after a couple of years, I began to experience problems. Despite keeping up with scheduled maintenance, the car frequently breaks down, with each repair costing between $1,000-2,000+. The most recent issue was with the fuel pump, and now it's the ECM/ECU. The most frustrating part is that it always seems to break down unexpectedly, leaving me stranded. This has become such an issue that I now rent cars when travelling out of town or to rural areas, as I can't rely on this car. I want to emphasize that I have always kept up with scheduled maintenance. In my opinion, this is the type of car that is better leased than owned. Just a friendly warning.

Positive 2016 Audi A4 car reviews

  1. Christopher Muller 2024-11-11

Power, fuel economy, and instrumentation are excellent. However, the back seat could use more leg room, and the front seats could probably use more padding as they are not very comfortable on long drives.

  2. Orval Treutel 2024-10-24

This car is truly impressive. While there is some road noise, the acceleration, comfort, and handling are all exceptional.

  3. Jacey Nitzsche 2024-10-22

Audi has had several years to perfect this model without a major redesign. This car has no major weaknesses, although it does come with a higher initial price and expected higher charge from the dealer for service, as it is a Germanic import after all. However, I was able to purchase a CPO which will cover the cost of the next three major service intervals, saving me around $1500, minus the $85 deductible each time. Overall, it's a stylish investment.

  4. Narciso Farrell 2024-09-27

My car, a 2015 Audi A4S, is still running beautifully at almost 45,000 miles. It seems like the perfect sedan with 31mpg on the highway, plenty of power (more than I dare to use), and a smooth, comfortable ride. The interior is immaculate with leather seating and a sunroof. Although I drove Mercedes Benz for 35 years before my Audi experience, I must say that this car is perfect. Even at 75 years old, I have no trouble driving it. In fact, someone crashed into my 2009 A4 at 50mph and the car saved our lives, which is why we bought another one in 2015. The only thing that could make it better would be the A4 AllRoad (station wagon/combi) so I could load up more.

  5. Rene Rowe 2024-09-10

This car is very comfortable and has great mileage. It has been super reliable and I have had 0 problems. The maintenance costs are a little on the high side, but overall the quality is great. I would highly recommend buying a certified one from Audi as it can save you tons of money and comes with an excellent warranty.
