2000 Audi A4 problems
The Audi A4 is a line of luxury compact executive cars produced since 1994 by the German car manufacturer Audi, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. The A4 has been built in five generations and is based on the Volkswagen Group B platform. The first generation A4 succeeded the Audi 80. The automaker's internal numbering treats the A4 as a continuation of the Audi 80 lineage, with the initial A4 designated as the B5-series, followed by the B6, B7, B8, and the B9.
The B8 and B9 versions of the A4 are built on the Volkswagen Group MLB platform shared with several models and brands across the Volkswagen Group. The Audi A4 automobile layout consists of a front-engine design, with transaxle-type transmissions mounted at the rear of the engine. The cars are front-wheel drive, or on some models, "quattro" all-wheel drive. The A4 is available as a sedan and station wagon. Historically, the second (B6) and third generations (B7) of the A4 also included a convertible version. For the fourth generation (B8) and onwards, the convertible, along with a new coupé and 5-door liftback variant, was spun-off by Audi into a new nameplate called the Audi A5.
B5 (Typ 8D; 1994)
The first generation Audi A4 (known internally as the Typ 8D) debuted in October 1994, with production starting November 1994 and European sales commencing in January 1995 for the 1995 model year. North American sales later began in September 1995 for the 1996 model year. It was built on the Volkswagen Group B5 (PL45) platform, which it shared with the fourth generation Volkswagen Passat (B5, Typ 3B). It had a front-mounted longitudinal engine and front-wheel drive. Many variations of the A4 were also available with Audi's quattro four-wheel drive system. The A4 was initially introduced as a four-door saloon/sedan; the Avant (estate/wagon) was introduced in November 1995 and went on sale in February 1996.
Development began in 1988, with the first design sketches being created later that year. By 1991, an exterior design by Imre Hasanic was chosen and frozen for November 1994 production by 1992. The interior design was later finalized in 1992, with pilot production commencing in the first half of 1994. Development concluded in the third quarter of 1994, preceding November 1994 start of production.
A wide range of engines were available in European markets, between 1.6 and 2.8 litres for petrol engines; and a 1.9-litre diesel engine available with Volkswagen Group's VE technology, capable of achieving a 90 PS (66 kW; 89 bhp) or 110 PS (81 kW; 108 bhp). The 2.6 and 2.8-litre V6 engines which had been carried over from the old 80/90 proved popular, although in North America, the 2.8-litre engine was the only V6 that was available there until 1997. A 2.4-liter version was developed especially for the Thai market, where import duty jumped from 60 to 100 percent on cars of over 2,400 cc displacement.
The Audi A4 was the first model in the Volkswagen Group to feature the new 1.8-litre 20v engine with five valves per cylinder, based on the unit Audi Sport had developed for their Supertouring race car. A turbocharged 1.8T version produced 150 PS (110 kW; 148 bhp) and 210 N⋅m (155 lb⋅ft) torque. Moreover, a quattro GmbH special edition of the B5 1.8T was later available in Germany and Europe, for which the engine's power output was raised to 180 PS (132 kW; 178 bhp) and 235 N⋅m (173 lb⋅ft). Five-valve technology was also added to a reengineered V6 family of engines in 1997, starting with the 2.8-litre V6 30v, which now produced 193 PS (142 kW; 190 bhp), followed by a 2.4-litre V6 which was a downsize from the previous 2.6 litre, 150 hp (112 kW) engine, but with a power increase to 165 PS (121 kW; 163 bhp).
Audi also debuted their new tiptronic automatic transmission on the B5 platform, based on the unit Porsche developed for their 964-generation 911. The transmission is a conventional automatic gearbox with a torque converter offering the driver a fully-automatic operation or manual selection of the gear ratios.
The B5 marked Audi's continued move into the midsize luxury car segment, having started this trajectory notably with later model years of the preceding Audi 80/90 B4. Despite initial mechanical problems, overall build and assembly quality were lauded both by the automotive press and within Audi and Volkswagen, and at the time, parent company Volkswagen declared the B5 the company-wide build quality benchmark for all its other models.

Common 2000 Audi A4 problems
The Audi A4, produced between 2000 and 2005, is known for its solid build quality and above-average reliability performance in previous JD Power customer satisfaction reports and What Car?'s Reliability Surveys. However, like any car, it has its share of common problems.
One of the most frequently reported issues is faulty air-conditioning, which Audi typically addresses under its three-year, 60,000-mile warranty.
The 1.8 turbo petrol engine has been particularly troublesome, with a history of ignition coil failure causing poor starting and misfires.
The cooling system and electrics are other areas where issues have been reported, with Audi sitting towards the bottom of the What Car? Reliability Index's make-by-make ranking.
Diesel A4s have been known to consume excessive amounts of oil when new, but this issue typically settles down once the engine has bedded in.
In summary, while the Audi A4 has a reputation for solid build quality and reliability, there are still some common problems that owners have reported. These include faulty air-conditioning, issues with the synchromesh on manual gearboxes, ignition coil failure on 1.8 turbo petrol engines, problems with the cooling system and electrics, and bumpy gearchanges on the Multitronic automatic gearbox. Diesel A4s can also consume excessive amounts of oil when new, but this issue typically settles down over time.

For us, the sweet spots in the range are the 2.0-litre petrol with either 190 or 204hp – badged 40 TFSI – or the 2.0-litre diesel with 150 or 163hp – badged 35 TDI. - Summary: AUDI COMPLAINT AND RECALL REQUEST THE ANTI LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM NO LONGER WORKS LIKE IT SHOULD. WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STARTED I GET A SOLID AMBER ABS WARNING LIGHT ALONG WITH A FLASHING BRAKE LIGHT ACCOMPANIED WITH THREE WARNING TONES. UPON DOING AN INTERNET SEARCH I IMMEDIATELY REALIZED THIS PROBLEM WITH THE BOSCH 5.3 ABS CONTROL MODULE UNIT IS EXTREMELY COMMON ON 1998 TO 2001 AUDI AND VW MODELS. AUDI/VW CREATED A SERVICE BULLETIN TO REPAIR VW'S IN THE SAME DATE RANGE (BULLETIN 0517 NHTSA ID NUMBER: 10016037), BUT IGNORED THE ISSUE WITH AUDI'S. AS PER THE VEHICLE'S OWNER'S MANUAL, IT STATES THAT WHILE THE SYSTEM IS IN THIS STATE, THE REAR BRAKES MAY LOCK UP UNDER BRAKING. THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT WILL NOT ALLOW ME TO BRAKE QUICKLY IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS. THE COST OF REPLACING THE ABS MODULE FROM THE DEALERSHIP WAS QUOTED AT OVER $1000. A SIMPLE INTERNET SEARCH REVEALS THAT THOUSANDS OF AUDI OWNERS HAVE VOICED COMPLAINTS. THIS IS A BLATANT DISREGARD FOR THEIR CUSTOMER'S SAFETY AND A RECALL SHOULD BE REQUIRED. *TR

- Fire: 1
- VIN: WAUKH28D7YA

- Summary: THE HEAT SHIELDS ABOVE MY CATALYTIC CONVERTERS CAUGHT FIRE AND HAD TO BE REPLACED, AT A LARGE EXPENSE TO ME. UPON RECEIPT OF THE REPLACEMENT PARTS, IT WAS NOTICED THAT THE PARTS HAD BEEN REDESIGNED. I BELIEVE THAT THE MANUFACTURER HAS FOUND A FUNDAMENTAL ISSUE WITH THEIR ORIGINAL DESIGN AND IS QUIETLY REPLACING THEM. THE PROBLEM WITH THIS IS THAT IT TAKES YOUR CAR CATCHING ON FIRE TO KNOW YOU NEED TO REPLACE THEM. *TR
EXTERIOR LIGHTING,EQUIPMENT PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-07-20
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,EQUIPMENT
- Summary: REPLACEMENT HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY P/N 341-1107L-US MADE BY DEPO FOR 2000 AUDI A4 HAS THE CENTER BULB ROTATED 180 DEGREES FROM THE ORIGINAL. A BULB ENGINEER AT SYLVANIA/OSRAM SAID THE PARTICULAR BULB LIGHT PATTERN IS DEPENDENT UPON ORIENTATION DUE TO THE FILAMENT STRUT AND A REFLECTOR IS DESIGNED TO WORK WITH THE BULB IN A CERTAIN DIRECTION. THE POTENTIAL ISSUES ARE 1) WAS THE REFLECTOR DESIGNED AND TESTED TO WORK WITH THE BULB THAT WAY, AND IF NOT 2) WAS THIS SOMETHING THAT WAS JUST OVERLOOKED OR IGNORED WHEN THE LIGHT WAS COPIED FROM THE ORIGINAL AUDI DESIGN, OR 3) WAS THIS A MANUFACTURING MISTAKE THAT HAPPENED TO A BATCH OF PARTS. A US DISTRIBUTOR THINKS #1 IS THE CASE, BUT HE MADE THE COMMENT WITHOUT SPEAKING TO THE ENGINEERS IN TAIWAN. IF THIS CONDITION IS IMPROPER, THERE ARE MANY LIGHT ASSEMBLIES OUT THERE LIKE THIS AND THEY MAY NOT PASS REGULATORY TESTS. I HAVE A PICTORIAL COMPARISON OF THE DEPO PART ALONGSIDE THE ORIGINAL THAT I CAN EMAIL AS ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. UPDATED 07/23/09 *BF *TR PICTURE RECEIVED. UPDATED 07/27/09

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2006-11-10
- VIN: WAUAC28D5YA
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: I AM AN OWNER OF A 2000 A4 1.8T AUDI. THE OWNER'S MANUAL STATES THAT THE TIMING BELT SHOULD BE REPLACED AT 105,000 MILES AND ALSO STATES THAT IT IS A "LONG-LASTING" BELT. I HAVE 95,000 MILES ON MY VEHICLE AND THE TENSIONER AND DAMPER FAILED WHEN I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT A SPEED OF 65 MPH; THE CAR JUST STOPPED, AND I HAD TO NAVIGATE THROUGH FOUR LANES OF HEAVY TRAFFIC TO THE SHOULDER IN A CAR WITH NO POWER- SCARY AND DANGEROUS! THE CAR HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE MECHANIC'S, AND SINCE I WAS 5 HOURS AWAY FROM HOME, I HAD TO RENT A CAR FOR THE NEXT 12 DAYS WHILE IT WAS BEING REPAIRED. $3300.00 LATER, AND AFTER TWO TRIPS UP THERE (10 HOURS ROUND TRIP FROM HOME) I GOT MY CAR BACK AND WAS INFORMED WHY THE WHOLE THING HAPPENED (DEFECTIVE PARTS). THE MECHANIC SHOWED ME ALL THE DAMAGE THAT WAS DONE-INCLUDING ALL 20 BROKEN AND TWISTED VALVES! APPARENTLY, AUDI KNOWS ABOUT THESE PROBLEMS, AND OTHERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME THING, BUT AUDI HAS NEVER MADE ANY ATTEMPT TO NOTIFY ME OR OTHER A4 OWNERS OF THIS SERIOUS AND DANGEROUS PROBLEM. THIS IS A FINICKY CAR AND WHEN THE TIMING BELT GOES, IT ALSO CAUSES SIGNIFICANT ENGINE DAMAGE, WHICH IS VERY COSTLY TO REPAIR. BECAUSE AUDI KNOWS OF THIS PROBLEM, AND HAS NOT INFORMED THE CUSTOMERS, AND BECAUSE THE OWNER'S MANUAL INDICATES REPLACEMENT AT 105,000 MILES, I WILL ADAMANTLY PURSUE REIMBURSEMENT FROM THEM THROUGH THEIR CORPORATE OFFICE. I READ OF ONE OTHER PERSON ON THIS SITE WHO HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM--IF YOU HAVE ALSO, PLEASE POST YOUR COMPLAINT! *JB

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-10-02
- VIN: WAUDH28D6YA
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: ABS MODULE/SENSOR FAILURE. THIS PROBLEM OCCURS FREQUENTLY WITH OTHER AUDI OWNERS AND HAS BEEN THOROUGHLY DOCUMENTED ON SITES SUCH AS MYCARSTATS.COM. BASICALLY THE ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS WOULD COME ON WHILE DRIVING, ACCOMPANIED BY A BEEP. AFTER INITIAL RESEARCH, I WAS ABLE TO CONFIRM THE MODULE HAD FAILED AND WOULD REQUIRE REPLACEMENT. LOCAL AUDI DEALER QUOTED 1500 FOR THE MODULE PLUS LABOR. LUCKILY, I FOUND AN ALTERNATIVE BY SENDING THE FAULTY MODULE TO MODULEMASTER.COM. THIS COMPANY SPECIALIZES IN REPAIRING DEFEKTIVE CIRCUITRY. THE LABOR IS WARRANTIED FOR THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE AND COSTS 300.00 (INCLUDING SHIPPING AND MISC. STUFF). THE CAR WAS STILL DRIVEABLE WHILE THE MODULE WAS OUT. THEIR WEBSITE CONTAINED A VIDEO ON HOW TO PROPERLY ACCESS THE MODULE, REMOVE IT, AND REPLACE IT ONCE IT WAS REPAIRED. ALL IN ALL, I SAVED MYSELF '1200 PLUS LABOR'. I WOULD LIKE EXPRESS MY DISGUST WITH ALL AUDI DEALERS WHO SELL THEIR MODULES FOR THESE OUTRAGEOUS PRICES. ONE THING NONE OF THEM ADMITT TO IS THAT THE REASON WHY THESE BOSCH MODULES FAIL IS BECAUSE OF A KNOWN DEFEKT IN THE CIRCUITRY. SO THEIR $1200 MODULES WILL EVENTUALLY FAIL TOO. *NM

This is such a great car! It's really fun to drive and feels so smooth, but it's also really powerful when you need it to be. Plus, with Quattro, ABS 4-wheel disc brakes, and a solid build, it's one of the safest cars out there. And the interior features are just fantastic. Overall, the A-4 is definitely one of the best in its class!

I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your car! It sounds like it's a real joy to drive - zipping around effortlessly and handling great. And not only is it reliable, but it's also gorgeous and sporty. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

The Audi A4 is a reliable car that can handle aftermarket modifications and regular maintenance. It is a great choice for those who prioritize style and performance and are willing to take care of their vehicle. While maintenance costs may be higher than Japanese cars, they are still less than BMW. If you want a car that stands out from the crowd, the Audi A4 is the way to go.

Hey there! I think this car is awesome, but it could use a bit more power. Have you considered going with an APR chip? It could make it even better!

I bought the car used. It is actually the second B5 platform car in my house. This is my wife's car. I drive a '98 Passat that basically uses the same platform. The car drives perfectly. So far, we have not had any major problems. I see so many negative opinions here, but the truth about VAG's (Volkswagen und Audi Gruppe) is that these cars require regular work and check-ups. If you do all of these, you will have a great car for years. The timing belt is a must after 60k miles. It costs $500-$700 at the dealership or $200 if you do it yourself. If you don't do it, you might end up needing a new engine. The car is fun to drive and the AWD is perfect for Michigan winters.

This car was wonderful-- until the warranty expired. Since then, I have spent thousands of dollars on engine and suspension repairs. I had a bad experience with Steve White Audi (Greenville, SC) service department, but I'm sure they are working to improve. Audi of America is also working to ensure quality service.

Firstly, I want to express my admiration for the design and performance of the car. However, I have had some issues with it. Although the warranty has covered the costs, it has been inconvenient to have the car in the shop so frequently. I have had to replace several headlights, and there have been other miscellaneous problems, such as malfunctioning gadgets. Unfortunately, the shop I have been dealing with has not been very helpful, and I have not received any satisfactory response from Audi regarding my concerns. My lease ends in January, and I am looking forward to exploring other options.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my car shopping journey. Although my car looks high-end, I've had some issues with it. I had to have the brakes redone right after buying it, and a few other things have needed fixing since then. While it's been a bit of a hassle, I'm still happy with my purchase overall. I just wanted to give you a heads up that repairs can be a bit pricey and it may be a bit difficult to locate a dealer. Just keep in mind that looks can be deceiving when it comes to the A4.

Our Audi 1.8T, purchased in 2000, has been a reliable car for us. Despite some early issues with the Turbo and Quattro drive gaskets leaking air/fluid, which were promptly resolved under warranty, we have put 30,000 miles on the odometer as of today's date. Recently, we were informed by the dealer that the gaskets need to be replaced again, which will cost $800. We have noticed some oil drops in our driveway, and we have heard of other Audi owners experiencing similar gasket problems with their newer AUDIs. However, we remain confident in the quality of our car and will address this issue accordingly.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my A4 that I bought back in February. Living in Colorado, I needed a safe AWD car and this one had only 28K miles on it. However, I've had some trouble with the Check Engine light, which has been on more than it's been off. I had to replace the secondary air pump, O2 sensor, and mass air flow sensor, which cost me a total of $960. To save some money, I actually did the installation myself! Unfortunately, Audi wasn't much help and I even had a negative experience with a representative from Ed Caroll in Fort Collins, CO. Despite these issues, I still think the A4 is a great car, but it may not be the best fit for those who prefer to do their own maintenance. Thanks for listening!
