2004 Audi A4 problems

The Audi A4 is a line of luxury compact executive cars produced since 1994 by the German car manufacturer Audi, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. The A4 has been built in five generations and is based on the Volkswagen Group B platform. The first generation A4 succeeded the Audi 80. The automaker's internal numbering treats the A4 as a continuation of the Audi 80 lineage, with the initial A4 designated as the B5-series, followed by the B6, B7, B8, and the B9.
The B8 and B9 versions of the A4 are built on the Volkswagen Group MLB platform shared with several models and brands across the Volkswagen Group. The Audi A4 automobile layout consists of a front-engine design, with transaxle-type transmissions mounted at the rear of the engine. The cars are front-wheel drive, or on some models, "quattro" all-wheel drive. The A4 is available as a sedan and station wagon. Historically, the second (B6) and third generations (B7) of the A4 also included a convertible version. For the fourth generation (B8) and onwards, the convertible, along with a new coupé and 5-door liftback variant, was spun-off by Audi into a new nameplate called the Audi A5.
B5 (Typ 8D; 1994)
The first generation Audi A4 (known internally as the Typ 8D) debuted in October 1994, with production starting November 1994 and European sales commencing in January 1995 for the 1995 model year. North American sales later began in September 1995 for the 1996 model year. It was built on the Volkswagen Group B5 (PL45) platform, which it shared with the fourth generation Volkswagen Passat (B5, Typ 3B). It had a front-mounted longitudinal engine and front-wheel drive. Many variations of the A4 were also available with Audi's quattro four-wheel drive system. The A4 was initially introduced as a four-door saloon/sedan; the Avant (estate/wagon) was introduced in November 1995 and went on sale in February 1996.
Development began in 1988, with the first design sketches being created later that year. By 1991, an exterior design by Imre Hasanic was chosen and frozen for November 1994 production by 1992. The interior design was later finalized in 1992, with pilot production commencing in the first half of 1994. Development concluded in the third quarter of 1994, preceding November 1994 start of production.
A wide range of engines were available in European markets, between 1.6 and 2.8 litres for petrol engines; and a 1.9-litre diesel engine available with Volkswagen Group's VE technology, capable of achieving a 90 PS (66 kW; 89 bhp) or 110 PS (81 kW; 108 bhp). The 2.6 and 2.8-litre V6 engines which had been carried over from the old 80/90 proved popular, although in North America, the 2.8-litre engine was the only V6 that was available there until 1997. A 2.4-liter version was developed especially for the Thai market, where import duty jumped from 60 to 100 percent on cars of over 2,400 cc displacement.
The Audi A4 was the first model in the Volkswagen Group to feature the new 1.8-litre 20v engine with five valves per cylinder, based on the unit Audi Sport had developed for their Supertouring race car. A turbocharged 1.8T version produced 150 PS (110 kW; 148 bhp) and 210 N⋅m (155 lb⋅ft) torque. Moreover, a quattro GmbH special edition of the B5 1.8T was later available in Germany and Europe, for which the engine's power output was raised to 180 PS (132 kW; 178 bhp) and 235 N⋅m (173 lb⋅ft). Five-valve technology was also added to a reengineered V6 family of engines in 1997, starting with the 2.8-litre V6 30v, which now produced 193 PS (142 kW; 190 bhp), followed by a 2.4-litre V6 which was a downsize from the previous 2.6 litre, 150 hp (112 kW) engine, but with a power increase to 165 PS (121 kW; 163 bhp).
Audi also debuted their new tiptronic automatic transmission on the B5 platform, based on the unit Porsche developed for their 964-generation 911. The transmission is a conventional automatic gearbox with a torque converter offering the driver a fully-automatic operation or manual selection of the gear ratios.
The B5 marked Audi's continued move into the midsize luxury car segment, having started this trajectory notably with later model years of the preceding Audi 80/90 B4. Despite initial mechanical problems, overall build and assembly quality were lauded both by the automotive press and within Audi and Volkswagen, and at the time, parent company Volkswagen declared the B5 the company-wide build quality benchmark for all its other models.

Common 2004 Audi A4 problems
The Audi A4 (B6) from 2004 has been known to have several common problems that owners have reported. These issues can be categorized into suspension, transmission, engine, electrical, and other components.
Suspension Issues:
The Audi A4 B6 is known to have suspension issues, which can lead to a rough ride and increased wear on other components. These issues can be caused by worn-out bushings, ball joints, and control arms. It is essential to inspect these components regularly and replace them as necessary to maintain the vehicle's handling and ride quality
Faulty Oxygen Sensors:
Faulty oxygen sensors are another common problem in the Audi A4 B6. These sensors are responsible for measuring the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gases, which helps the engine control system adjust the air-fuel mixture. A faulty oxygen sensor can cause the engine to run poorly, increase fuel consumption, and produce more emissions. It is essential to replace faulty oxygen sensors as soon as possible to maintain the vehicle's performance and fuel efficiency
Oil Leakage:
Oil leakage is a common issue in the Audi A4 B6, which can be caused by several factors, including worn-out gaskets, seals, and hoses. Oil leakage can lead to decreased engine performance, increased wear on other components, and the risk of engine failure. It is essential to inspect the engine regularly for signs of oil leakage and replace any worn-out components as necessary
Transmission Problems:
The Audi A4 B6 is known to have transmission problems, especially in the Multitronic CVT transmission. These problems can include jerky operation, rough take-off, and fluctuating engine revs when driving at a constant speed. These issues can be caused by worn-out components, such as the torque converter, clutch, and transmission fluid. It is essential to replace worn-out components and maintain the transmission fluid regularly to maintain the vehicle's performance and longevity
Power Steering Problems:
The Audi A4 B6 is known to have power steering problems, which can be caused by several factors, including low power steering fluid level, leaks in the power steering system, and worn-out components. These issues can lead to groaning or whining noises from the power steering pump, play in the steering wheel, and noises when turning the steering wheel. It is essential to inspect the power steering system regularly for signs of wear and leaks and replace any worn-out components as necessary.
Cooling System and Electrical Malfunctions:
Faults in the Audi A4's cooling system and electrical malfunctions are among the car's commonest problems, according to the What Car? Reliability Index. Air-con systems are vulnerable, too, so check that it blows cold. The 1.8 turbo petrol has had a history of ignition coil failure, leading to poor starting and misfires, but by now, most will have had replacements that, touch wood, are pretty reliable.
Convertible Roof:
The fabric roof and the hydraulic system are reliable. The roof is operated by six hydraulic cylinders and a hydraulic pump in the boot of the car. Your three main concerns are weather intrusion (fancy name for a leaking roof), hydraulic fluid leaks and just general wear. The things to check...
In conclusion, the Audi A4 B6 from 2004 has several common problems that owners have reported. These issues can be categorized into suspension, transmission, engine, electrical, and other components. It is essential to inspect these components regularly and replace any worn-out components as necessary to maintain the vehicle's performance and longevity.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-07
- Fire: 1
- VIN: WAUAT48H34K
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: This took place about a week ago. The car was parked in our driveway when the fire started. My husband had returned home just 15 minutes prior to the fire starting. I noticed there was smoke coming in our living room window. Then I looked at our security camas. And saw smoke pouring out from underneath the hood of my car. We tried to put the fire out with our two hose system set up and it wouldn't go out. So we knew it was electrical. We couldn't get close enough to open the hood so I couldn't pour baking soda on it. Two fire extinguishers later like 10 minutes the firefighters showed up and we're able to put it out. They confirmed that the arch came from the battery terminals /cables. Two of the fireman said they'd never seen anything like this before. Then the car tried to START ITSELF as my husband and the two fireman were standing right in front of the Audi. They had to cut the remaining battery cable that wasn't completely burned through before it stopped. My neighbor has a recording of the whole incident. The engine compartment is destroyed! The engine might be all right but we don't have the finances to do anything but clean up. Oh and for extra fun one of the fireman took an ax the the hood of the A4 cabriolet I have had for maybe a month. Now we have no car and no real means of being able to fix it.

- VIN: WAUAC48H94K
- Components: STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: REAR WINDOW OF CONVERTIBLE SOFT TOP FOR 2004 AUDI A4 CABRIOLET. AN OLD ISSUE OFTEN SUFFERED BY AUDI CABRIOLETS FROM 2003-2009. CLAIMED TO BE CAUSED BY THE ADHESIVE THAT AUDI USES. THIS CAN BE CAUSED BY KEEPING THE CAR OUTSIDE INSTEAD OF IN A GARAGE AS PROLONGED EXPOSURE TO SUNLIGHT CAUSES THE ADHESIVE TO GIVE AWAY AND FAIL, CAUSING THE REAR WINDOW TO SEPARATE FROM THE OUTER LAYER OF THE TOP AND DROP. WHILE THE WINDOW IS STILL TECHNICALLY ATTACHED TO THE INNER LAYER OF THE TOP, THE WINDOW NO LONGER PROTECTS AGAINST WATER. AS A RESULT RAIN CAN SEEP INTO THE NON WATER RESISTANT INNER LAYER OF THE TOP AND THEN CAUSE WATER DAMAGE TO THE REAR SEATS. THIS IS THE CASE WITH MY OWN CAR AND WITH A LARGE ENOUGH NUMBER OF CABRIOLETS THAT THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN SETTLED FRANKLY, A GOOD 10 YEARS AGO WHEN THE FIRST CASES WERE BEING NOTICED. I HAVE AS MANY OTHERS HAVE, ATTEMPTED TO USE A TEMPORARY FIX AND AS A RESULT, THERE IS A CLEAR INDUSTRIAL ADHESIVE AROUND THE TOP AND REAR WINDOW TO ATTEMPT TO FIX THIS, IT FAILS WITH CONTINUED USE.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-08-19
- VIN: WAULC68E34A
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: OIL DIPSTICK & SUPPORT TUBE, MADE OF PLASTIC, CRACKS - BRAKES INTO PIECES , BOTH ON THE DIPSTICK & TUBE THAT CAN EASILY GO DOWN THE TUBE INTO THE OIL BELOW. LOOKS LIKE A POOR ENGINEERING DECISION TO USE PLASTIC THAT AFTER YEARS OF HEATING TO NEAR ENGIND TEMPATURES THEN COOLING HAS A HIGH PROBABILITY OF CRANCKIN AND HAVING PIECES FALL INTO THE ENGINE OIL SUPPLY - POSSIBALLY CAUSING ENGIND DAMAGE OR FALIURE. SHOULD BE REPLACED EVERY 5 YEARS OR WITH A METAL STRUCTURE THAT DOESN'T CRACK/BREAK OFF INTO PIECES. I WOULD THINK FROM THE YOUTUBE COMPLAINTS ON HOW TO REPLACE IT I AM NOT ALONE WITH THIS PROIBLEM. DEALER PART SALES MIGHT CONFIRM THE PROBLEM.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-06-11

- VIN: WAUVC68EX4A
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: WAS DRIVING ON FREEWAY FOR A FEW HOURS DURING WHICH CAR WAS RUNNING FINE, AND CAR SUDDENLY LOST POWER JUST AFTER I GOT OFF FREEWAY AND APPROACHED A MOUNTAIN ROAD INCLINE. THERE WAS NO WARNING LIGHT, OR PRIOR SYMPTOMS TO ENGINE FAILURE, IT JUST STOPPED. WITH HELP, I WAS ABLE TO GET CAR OUT OF THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD AND TO SAFETY. TRIED TO TROUBLESHOOT, USED ENGINE ERROR CODE READER, AND NO FAULT CODES FOUND. PERFORMED BASICS CHECKED FOR POTENTIAL FUEL VAPOR LOCK DUE TO ALTITUDE; CHECKED OIL, COOLANT AND FUEL LEVELS- AND ALL LEVELS WERE OK. BATTERY WAS FUNCTIONING - AS RADIO, LIGHTS WORKED. CAR HAS BEEN CONSISTENTLY SERVICED AND MAINTENANCE WAS CURRENT. CAR WAS TOWED TO NEAREST DEALER, DIAGNOSIS BY DEALER FUEL PUMP FAILURE DUE TO CLOGGED FUEL FILTER. MY ISSUE IS THAT AUDI DOES NOT INDICATE SERVICE MAINTENANCE FOR FUEL FILTER. THERE IS NOT ANY MAINTENANCE RECOMMENDATIONS OR GUIDANCE IN EITHER THE OWNER'S MANUAL OR PUBLISHED LIST OF RECOMMENDED SERVICES TO REPLACE OR CHECK FILER. THERE ALSO WERE NOT ANY WARNING LIGHTS, FAULT CODES OR INDICATIONS TO WATCH FOR. I FEEL THAT IT IS NEGLIGENT OF THE MANUFACTURER TO NOT INDICATE ANY SERVICE INTERVAL TO CHANGE FUEL FILTER IN ORDER TO PREVENT FUEL PUMP FAILURE, AND TO ENSURE THE SAFE OPERATING CONDITIONS OF THE VEHICLE. THE CAR LOST POWER ON A WINDING MOUNTAIN ROAD AND PUT ME AT DANGER WITHOUT WARNING. I AM CURIOUS IF THIS FUEL PUMP INCIDENT COULD BE ASSOCIATED WITH KNOWN FUEL PUMP ISSUES, NHTSA #PE08027. KEY SIDE NOTES, WHILE I AM THE SECOND REGISTERED OWNER, THIS CAR WAS PURCHASED BY MY FATHER WHO WAS THE ORIGINAL OWNER, BUT FOR INSURANCE AND REGISTRATION PURPOSES THE VEHICLE WAS TRANSFERRED OVER TO ME, BUT I HAVE ALL ORIGINAL RECORDS OF THE VEHICLE AND CAN VERIFY ALL MAINTENANCE SERVICES HAVE BEEN PERFORMED. *JS

I understand that some people may only write reviews when they have had negative experiences. However, I wanted to share my positive experience with switching from a nice loaded sports car to a more affordable economy car with cloth seats. Personally, I have never had any issues with my car and neither have several of my friends. It seems that on EDMUNDS, people tend to report more problems than elsewhere.

I'm so glad to hear that you've been enjoying your A4 1.8T for a year now, even though it was bought used. It's great to know that the car doesn't need service as often, and I hope it continues to be reliable for you. The interior is absolutely stunning and comfortable, although it's a shame that there aren't enough cup holders. The performance is truly impressive, especially considering it's a 4 cylinder car with a turbo. Additionally, the car handles like a dream and performs well even in winter conditions thanks to the Quattro system.

I've owned mine for about two months and I really love it so far. It can fit tons of stuff, I can even put my bikes on top and drive it hard in the corners like a sports sedan. I'm impressed with how it handles, what other SUV drives like this? The only downside is that it could get better MPG around town. I'm currently getting 17-19, but I've heard it improves over time.

I read a lot of reviews before purchasing my 2004 Audi A4 Avant, so I thought I'd share my thoughts. Initially, I wasn't considering the Audi, but I needed a used wagon that could handle snow for around $20,000. I test drove the Passat Wagon and almost bought a new one, but I was concerned about the aggressive discounting by local dealers, which usually means bad resale value in a few years. Then I looked at the Saab 9-5, BMW 3-Series, and Audi A4 wagons. After considering handling, comfort, volume, price, and resale value, the Audi was the clear winner. Now, ten months later, I can confidently say that this is an excellent car.

I recently purchased an A4 2004 with an extended warranty and took it for a maintenance checkup at Keys Audi in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, they informed me that I had to wait for two weeks to get an appointment. Despite having a bad vibration problem, I decided to wait for the appointment. However, when I returned two weeks later at 103,000 miles, they refused to honor the 100,000-mile warranty or the extended warranty. I was frustrated and called Audi America to express my concerns. After some discussion, they agreed to honor the extended warranty. However, I only received an oil change and tire rotation, which was disappointing. When I asked about the vibration issue, they informed me that it was due to motor mounts and quoted me $2,000 to fix it. I decided to go to a local mechanic who charged me $800 to replace the motor mounts, but the vibration was still present. Unfortunately, three days later, the engine blew due to a timing chain failure. I contacted them again, but they did not take any action.

Sorry to hear about your transmission trouble during your third week of ownership. It can be frustrating when things don't go as planned, especially with a new car. I hope you were able to find a solution and get it fixed. It's disappointing to hear that the dealer wasn't helpful in this situation. If you need any further assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

I've been driving my A4 for 2.5 years now and have put 48,000 miles on it since I bought it with 34,000 miles. Unfortunately, I've had to replace the ignition coil, fuel pump, and now I need to take it in for a trans module that costs $2000. On top of that, I just found out that my top leaks and will need to be replaced at $2500. It's been a bit of a rough ride, but I'm considering trading it in for a Toyota or Honda. Audi, I hope you take this feedback into consideration.

I bought this car in October 2008 and unfortunately, it has required several repairs since then. The first repair was on December 31st, 2008 for the coil packs which cost $363. I had to have these replaced two more times between then and now. The second repair was on February 25th, 2010 for the clutch which cost $1677. The third repair was on February 4th, 2011 for the crank case which cost $242. The fourth repair was on April 6th, 2011 for the PCV valve which cost $254. Unfortunately, the car broke down on the way home from the shop and I had to pay $595 for a fuel pump on April 7th, 2011. I am missing one receipt for a valve cover gasket which I believe was around December 2010 and cost $200. When I picked up the car after getting the fuel pump installed, I was informed that it needs a new catalytic converter which would cost $1500. On Father's Day 2011, I experienced complete brake failure and barely missed hitting another car. I ended up hopping a curb, flying over a ditch, and hitting a telephone pole. From what I understand, this is a common problem with this car. I strongly advise against buying this car as it is not safe!

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to bring to your attention some repairs that my vehicle requires. The gas tank, wheel lining, shock absorber, and tire all need attention, and unfortunately, the cost is estimated to be between $1500-2000. I had a flat tire at only 2389 miles, and the replacement tire alone cost $180. I was disappointed to learn that neither the dealership nor Audi of America would cover any of these costs. I am concerned about the safety of this vehicle, as it seems that a flat tire can cause severe damage. I appreciate your attention to this matter and look forward to hearing from you soon.
