2002 Audi A4 problems

The Audi A4 is a line of luxury compact executive cars produced since 1994 by the German car manufacturer Audi, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. The A4 has been built in five generations and is based on the Volkswagen Group B platform. The first generation A4 succeeded the Audi 80. The automaker's internal numbering treats the A4 as a continuation of the Audi 80 lineage, with the initial A4 designated as the B5-series, followed by the B6, B7, B8, and the B9.

The B8 and B9 versions of the A4 are built on the Volkswagen Group MLB platform shared with several models and brands across the Volkswagen Group. The Audi A4 automobile layout consists of a front-engine design, with transaxle-type transmissions mounted at the rear of the engine. The cars are front-wheel drive, or on some models, "quattro" all-wheel drive. The A4 is available as a sedan and station wagon. Historically, the second (B6) and third generations (B7) of the A4 also included a convertible version. For the fourth generation (B8) and onwards, the convertible, along with a new coupé and 5-door liftback variant, was spun-off by Audi into a new nameplate called the Audi A5.

B5 (Typ 8D; 1994)

The first generation Audi A4 (known internally as the Typ 8D) debuted in October 1994, with production starting November 1994 and European sales commencing in January 1995 for the 1995 model year. North American sales later began in September 1995 for the 1996 model year. It was built on the Volkswagen Group B5 (PL45) platform, which it shared with the fourth generation Volkswagen Passat (B5, Typ 3B). It had a front-mounted longitudinal engine and front-wheel drive. Many variations of the A4 were also available with Audi's quattro four-wheel drive system. The A4 was initially introduced as a four-door saloon/sedan; the Avant (estate/wagon) was introduced in November 1995 and went on sale in February 1996.

Development began in 1988, with the first design sketches being created later that year. By 1991, an exterior design by Imre Hasanic was chosen and frozen for November 1994 production by 1992. The interior design was later finalized in 1992, with pilot production commencing in the first half of 1994. Development concluded in the third quarter of 1994, preceding November 1994 start of production.

A wide range of engines were available in European markets, between 1.6 and 2.8 litres for petrol engines; and a 1.9-litre diesel engine available with Volkswagen Group's VE technology, capable of achieving a 90 PS (66 kW; 89 bhp) or 110 PS (81 kW; 108 bhp). The 2.6 and 2.8-litre V6 engines which had been carried over from the old 80/90 proved popular, although in North America, the 2.8-litre engine was the only V6 that was available there until 1997. A 2.4-liter version was developed especially for the Thai market, where import duty jumped from 60 to 100 percent on cars of over 2,400 cc displacement.

The Audi A4 was the first model in the Volkswagen Group to feature the new 1.8-litre 20v engine with five valves per cylinder, based on the unit Audi Sport had developed for their Supertouring race car. A turbocharged 1.8T version produced 150 PS (110 kW; 148 bhp) and 210 N⋅m (155 lb⋅ft) torque. Moreover, a quattro GmbH special edition of the B5 1.8T was later available in Germany and Europe, for which the engine's power output was raised to 180 PS (132 kW; 178 bhp) and 235 N⋅m (173 lb⋅ft). Five-valve technology was also added to a reengineered V6 family of engines in 1997, starting with the 2.8-litre V6 30v, which now produced 193 PS (142 kW; 190 bhp), followed by a 2.4-litre V6 which was a downsize from the previous 2.6 litre, 150 hp (112 kW) engine, but with a power increase to 165 PS (121 kW; 163 bhp).

Audi also debuted their new tiptronic automatic transmission on the B5 platform, based on the unit Porsche developed for their 964-generation 911. The transmission is a conventional automatic gearbox with a torque converter offering the driver a fully-automatic operation or manual selection of the gear ratios.

The B5 marked Audi's continued move into the midsize luxury car segment, having started this trajectory notably with later model years of the preceding Audi 80/90 B4. Despite initial mechanical problems, overall build and assembly quality were lauded both by the automotive press and within Audi and Volkswagen, and at the time, parent company Volkswagen declared the B5 the company-wide build quality benchmark for all its other models.

Common 2002 Audi A4 problems

The 2002 Audi A4, like many other vehicles, has a number of common problems reported by its owners. These issues primarily revolve around the engine, transmission, suspension, and electrical components.

  • Engine failure: The 2002 Audi A4 has fewer complaints about engine failure compared to other model years, but it is still a significant issue. Engine failure is often caused by timing tensioner failure, which can result in catastrophic internal damage to the engine. This problem typically occurs around 66,000 miles and can cost up to $8,500 to repair.
  • Bad piston rings: While not as common, bad piston rings can hinder the A4's reliability. This issue is extremely costly, often requiring a complete engine replacement due to damage to both the piston and engine block.
  • Engine oil sludge: The 2002-2005 Audi A4 B6 models, including the 2002 A4, are prone to engine oil sludge, particularly in 1.8T engines . Regular oil changes using the manufacturer-recommended oil type are crucial to prevent this issue.
  • Transmission and clutch problems: Early models of the A4 B6, including the 2002 A4, faced issues with automatic transmissions, such as rough shifting and complete failure . Manual transmissions also experienced problems with the clutch, including premature wear.
  • Suspension and steering issues: The A4 B6, including the 2002 A4, may encounter suspension issues, such as worn-out bushings, struts, and control arms. These can lead to a compromised ride quality and affect handling .
  • Electrical issues: Electrical problems, such as malfunctioning sensors, faulty window regulators, or problems with the central locking system, have been reported in some 2002 A4 models .
  • Cooling system issues: Instances of coolant leaks, overheating, or radiator failures have been noted in the A4 B6, including the 2002 A4. Regularly inspecting the cooling system, including hoses, radiator, water pump, and thermostat, is essential to detect any signs of leakage or malfunction.

In conclusion, the 2002 Audi A4 has several common problems that potential buyers should be aware of, primarily related to the engine, transmission, suspension, and electrical components. Regular maintenance, inspections, and addressing issues promptly can help ensure a satisfactory ownership experience.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-03-08
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I AM WRITING REGARDING A SAD STORY ABOUT MY 2002 AUDI A4 QUATTRO 3.0 SEDAN . WHILE I REALIZE THAT THE CAR IS NOT NEW, AND WITH 152,000 MILES ON THE ROAD; I AM STILL DISAPPOINTED WITH THE SERIES OF EVENTS THAT HAS HAPPENED TO ME, NOT ONCE, BUT TWICE NOW! ABOUT A WEEK AGO, AS I TURNED THE ENGINE ON, I HEARD A LOUD KNOCKING LIKE SOMETHING HAD BEEN HIT AND FALLEN APART IN THE ENGINE. AT THE SAME TIME, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON (FLASHING). I TOOK IT TO MY TRUSTED MECHANIC. AT THIS POINT, I AM THINKING THAT THE ISSUE WAS WITH A COIL ? BUT NOT REALLY SINCE THEY HAVE BEEN REPLACED AND NOT THAT LONG AGO, MIGHT I ADD! WHILE THE CAR WAS BEING INSPECTED, THE MECHANIC HEARD A NOISE COMING FROM CAMSHAFT ADJUSTERS. ONCE THEY OPENED THE CASE, THEY FOUND SCREWS LOSE THAT HAD LITERALLY FALLEN OFF AND BROKEN. THE CAMSHAFT ADJUSTMENT HOUSING WAS ALSO DAMAGED, AMONGST OTHER PARTS (I HAVE PICTURES). HOW CAN THIS BE POSSIBLE? AFTER ALL, THE BOLTS ARE ENCASED, AND IT IS NOT LIKE ANYONE MESSED WITH THEM. THE SAD PART IS THAT THE SAME HAD HAPPENED ON THE OTHER SIDE A YEAR AGO. *TR

  • VIN: WAUJC68E52A
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: CAR JERKS THEN SHUTS OFF ESPECIALLY WHEN COMING TO A STOP OR AFTER CHANGING GEARS. IT ALSO JERKS WHEN ON AN INCLINED STREET, THE CAR STARTS TO ROLL BACK, JERKS AFTER ACCELERATION, THEN CUTS OFF COMPLETELY. EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-11-16
  • VIN: WAULT68E02A
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: AFTER DRIVING FOR A FEW MINUTES THE LEFT DIPPED HEADLIGHT MESSAGE DISPLAYS ON THE DASH AND THE LEFT (DRIVER SIDE) HEADLIGHT WILL FLICKER ON AND OFF A FEW TIMES AND THEN GO OUT COMPLETELY. TURNING THE HEADLIGHTS OFF AND ON A FEW TIMES WILL GET IT TO COME ON AGAIN BUT ONLY FOR A SHORT TIME. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AS THE LIGHTS ARE A REQUIRED SAFETY ITEM ON ALL VEHICLES AND IT IS A TICKETABLE ITEM. THIS NEEDS TO BE A SAFETY RECALL FROM AUDI AS NONE OF THE DEALERS SEEM TO KNOW HOW TO REPAIR THE ITEM WITHOUT HAVING YOU SPEND THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TRYING TO SWAP OUT PARTS UNTIL YOU FIND SOMETHING THAT MIGHT STOP IT. MOST BLOGS HAVE SAID THAT THE DEALER CAN NEVER FIND A SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM AFTER THEY HAVE SPENT $2-3K AND FINALLY GAVE UP AND ARE DRIVING THE CAR WITHOUT 1 OR MORE HEADLIGHTS. *TR

  • Summary: 2002 AUDI A4 1.8T, TRANSMISSION CTV, THE CAR HAS 75,000 MILES EVERYTHING WORKS IN THE CAR WITH SOME MINOR STUFF, BUT THE TRANSMISSION START TO JERK WHEN STOP IN A RED LIGHT, IS ALMOST UNCONTROLLABLE, IT WANT TO MOVE THE FORWARD, SO I HAVE TO PRESS THE BRAKE HARD SO IT DOESN'T MOVE. IT STARTS TO GET DANGEROUS TO DRIVE IN THAT KIND OF CONDITION. THIS IS THE SECOND AUDI I OWN AND THAT?S A SHAME THAT SO GOOD QUALITY CAR HAS THIS KIND OF PROBLEM AND THE DEALERS AND AUDI USA DON?T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. YOU SPEND 30 THOUSAND OF DOLLARS AND YOU HAVE TO THROW YOUR CAR AWAY BECAUSE THE FIX COST MORE THAN WHAT YOUR CAR IS WORTH. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-12-03
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: WAUVC68E62A
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: ON DECEMBER 3RD, 2010, I WAS DRIVING SOUTH ON I-405S HEADING FROM LONG BEACH, CA TO SAN DIEGO, CA. I WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH WHEN MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND I LOST ALL ACCELERATION IN MY CAR. I STILL HAD ELECTRICAL POWER (IE, INDICATORS STILL WORKED, MY MANUAL TRANSMISSION WORKED AND INTERIOR DOME LIGHTS WORKED). I PULLED STRAIGHT OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY AT WHICH POINT I NOTICED THAT THE HOOD OF MY CAR APPEARED TO BE MELTING AND THAT SMOKE WAS RISING OUT OF THE ENGINE. I JUMPED OUT OF THE CAR AND RAN TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD TO CALL 911. TWO GRACIOUS STRANGERS ATTEMPTED WITH TWO SEPARATE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS TO PUT OUT THE FIRE BUT WERE UNABLE TO. THE ENTIRE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WAS ENTIRELY CONSUMED BY FLAMES WITHIN 2-3 MINUTES. BY THE TIME THE FIRE DEPARTMENT AND EMTS ARRIVED, THE ENTIRE CAR WAS AFLAME AND WAS NO LONGER SALVAGEABLE. IT ONLY TOOK ABOUT 5 MINUTES FOR THE ENTIRE CAR TO GO UP IN FLAMES. ALL THAT REMAINED ONCE THE FIRE WAS PUT OUT WAS THE REAR-HATCHBACK DOOR. EVERYTHING ELSE IN THE CAR WAS COMPLETELY AND TOTALLY MELTED AND BURNED. THE STATE TROOPER WHO WAS AT THE SCENE OF THE INCIDENT SAID THAT THE CAR WAS SO BADLY BURNT IT WOULD BE EXTREMELY HARD TO DETERMINE WHAT CAUSED THE FIRE. I HAVE PICTURES OF THE CAR AFTER THE FIRE AND WOULD BE HAPPY TO SHARE THEM IF NEEDED. THE FIRE WAS SO FAST, HOT AND QUICK THAT IT WAS ONLY 30 MINUTES FROM WHEN MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND I HAD TO PULL OVER, TO THE END OF THE ENTIRE ORDEAL. *TR

IT IS VERY COMMON WITH THESE VEHICLES. WHEN THIS PROBLEM BEGINS IT WILL TYPICALLY OCCUR REGULARLY (EVERY USE OF THE VEHICLE). • VIN: WAULT68EX2A
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: MY 2002 AUDI A4 3.0 HAS A RECURRING ISSUE WHERE THE LEFT HEADLIGHT GOES OUT WHILE DRIVING. I WILL DRIVE FOR A FEW MINUTES, THEN GET A "LEFT DIPPED HEADLIGHT" NOTIFICATION. IF I TAP THE EXTERIOR OF THE LIGHT IT WILL TEMPORARILY RETURN TO POWER. BUT WITHIN A FEW MORE MINUTES THE LIGHT GOES BACK OUT. THERE WAS NO EVENT THAT BROUGHT ON THE FAILURE. IT JUST HAPPENED ONE NIGHT AND HAS CONTINUED SINCE THEN. NO ONE SEEMS TO KNOW HOW TO FIX THE ISSUE, ALTHOUGH ONE MECHANIC HAS SAID THEY COULD REPLACE THE WHOLE UNIT FOR CLOSE TO $1000. THAT'S SOMETHING I CAN'T AFFORD, BUT THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND TICKETABLE OFFENSE SO I'VE BEEN FORCED TO LIMIT MY NIGHT AND EARLY MORNING DRIVING. *TR

2002 Audi A4 recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2002 Audi A4.

2021-06-23
  • Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2000-2001 Audi TT Coupe, TT Roadster, 2000-2002 A4, and S4 vehicles equipped with Non-Azide Driver Air Bag Inflators (NADI) that do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, possibly causing the air bag to deploy improperly in the event of a crash.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, the air bag may not properly protect the occupant, increasing the risk of serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Dealers will replace the driver frontal airbag inflator with an alternative inflator, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 2, 2021. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69CJ.

  • Manufacturer: The Gates Corporation
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
  • Summary: The Gates Corporation (Gates) is recalling certain aftermarket Tru-Flow Water Pumps, part number TFW 41127, sold at certain NAPA Auto Parts and/or installed by automotive service technicians after November 1, 2013 (and manufactured August 2013 through October 2013) that have a black-colored pulley/sprocket or do not have 'US9377' stamped on the water pump housing. These service replacement parts were sold for use in model year 1999-2005 Audi A4, 2000-2006 Audi TT, 1998-2005 Volkswagen Beetle, 1999-2006 Golf, 1999-2008 and 2011-2013 Volkswagen Jetta, and 2000-2005 Volkswagen Passat. In the affected water pumps, the pulley or sprocket that turns the timing belt may develop microfractures causing the timing belt to fail.
  • Consequence: A failure of the timing belt may cause the engine to shut down, potentially increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: Gates will notify owners, and dealers will replace the water pump, free of charge. The recall began during May 2014. Owners may contact The Gates Corporation at 1-303-744-1911.

Negative 2002 Audi A4 car reviews

This car is a blast to drive, especially with the CVT. While the seating may take some getting used to, it's worth it for the driving experience. However, the climate control system could use some improvement. It seems to struggle to maintain a consistent temperature, which can be frustrating. Despite multiple attempts by Audi service to fix the issue, it still persists. Overall, though, the car has been reliable and any other issues have been promptly resolved.

Hi there! It's great to hear that you're enjoying your Audi, and it sounds like you have a lot of experience with the brand. I noticed that you mentioned some reliability issues with the 1.8T, but it's good to know that your 3.0 is running strong. It's important to keep up with maintenance on these cars, as you mentioned, and I appreciate your advice on fixing issues right away to avoid costly repairs down the line. Thanks for sharing your insights!

When I was deciding between the A4-3.0, BMW-330i, Acura TL-S, Mercedes Benz C320, and the Infiniti-G35 before making my purchase, I ultimately chose the A4. It has a well-rounded set of features, including acceleration under 7 seconds, AWD Quattro, a beautiful interior, a stylish Dolphin Gray color, double exhaust, and a touch of class. While the Infiniti-G35 may have been a more affordable option that could outperform the other cars on the list, I personally felt that spending 38k on it just didn't feel right. I'm happy with my decision to go with the A4.

Excellent vehicle, fun to drive and you are guaranteed to turn heads. Get a warranty, though, as I bought it used and it was over the 50,000 mark. It was expensive to fix (2000 for a clutch). However, I would buy another A4 in a heartbeat.

  4. Erwin Mohr 2024-10-28

I've had this Audi for a while and I absolutely love it! It's got great looks and the drive is really fun too. The CVT feature is really helpful when you want to get the power out of the car, which isn't always obvious when in automatic.

  5. Laverne Murphy 2024-10-28

I've always wanted an A4 since it was introduced in the US, and now I finally have one! The new body style is so aggressive and masculine, which perfectly matches its power. The 1.8T is phenomenal in terms of pickup speed, and sometimes I feel like I'm in the Daytona 500 (well, maybe not quite that extreme, but you get the idea). I test drove the 02 Passat and Jetta to make a wise choice, but the Passat didn't even stand a chance. It just didn't have the sporty feel and tight steering that the A4 has. The Jetta was a strong contender, but the A4 won me over with its robust exterior and luxurious interior.
