2003 Audi A4 problems
The Audi A4 is a line of luxury compact executive cars produced since 1994 by the German car manufacturer Audi, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. The A4 has been built in five generations and is based on the Volkswagen Group B platform. The first generation A4 succeeded the Audi 80. The automaker's internal numbering treats the A4 as a continuation of the Audi 80 lineage, with the initial A4 designated as the B5-series, followed by the B6, B7, B8, and the B9.
The B8 and B9 versions of the A4 are built on the Volkswagen Group MLB platform shared with several models and brands across the Volkswagen Group. The Audi A4 automobile layout consists of a front-engine design, with transaxle-type transmissions mounted at the rear of the engine. The cars are front-wheel drive, or on some models, "quattro" all-wheel drive. The A4 is available as a sedan and station wagon. Historically, the second (B6) and third generations (B7) of the A4 also included a convertible version. For the fourth generation (B8) and onwards, the convertible, along with a new coupé and 5-door liftback variant, was spun-off by Audi into a new nameplate called the Audi A5.
B5 (Typ 8D; 1994)
The first generation Audi A4 (known internally as the Typ 8D) debuted in October 1994, with production starting November 1994 and European sales commencing in January 1995 for the 1995 model year. North American sales later began in September 1995 for the 1996 model year. It was built on the Volkswagen Group B5 (PL45) platform, which it shared with the fourth generation Volkswagen Passat (B5, Typ 3B). It had a front-mounted longitudinal engine and front-wheel drive. Many variations of the A4 were also available with Audi's quattro four-wheel drive system. The A4 was initially introduced as a four-door saloon/sedan; the Avant (estate/wagon) was introduced in November 1995 and went on sale in February 1996.
Development began in 1988, with the first design sketches being created later that year. By 1991, an exterior design by Imre Hasanic was chosen and frozen for November 1994 production by 1992. The interior design was later finalized in 1992, with pilot production commencing in the first half of 1994. Development concluded in the third quarter of 1994, preceding November 1994 start of production.
A wide range of engines were available in European markets, between 1.6 and 2.8 litres for petrol engines; and a 1.9-litre diesel engine available with Volkswagen Group's VE technology, capable of achieving a 90 PS (66 kW; 89 bhp) or 110 PS (81 kW; 108 bhp). The 2.6 and 2.8-litre V6 engines which had been carried over from the old 80/90 proved popular, although in North America, the 2.8-litre engine was the only V6 that was available there until 1997. A 2.4-liter version was developed especially for the Thai market, where import duty jumped from 60 to 100 percent on cars of over 2,400 cc displacement.
The Audi A4 was the first model in the Volkswagen Group to feature the new 1.8-litre 20v engine with five valves per cylinder, based on the unit Audi Sport had developed for their Supertouring race car. A turbocharged 1.8T version produced 150 PS (110 kW; 148 bhp) and 210 N⋅m (155 lb⋅ft) torque. Moreover, a quattro GmbH special edition of the B5 1.8T was later available in Germany and Europe, for which the engine's power output was raised to 180 PS (132 kW; 178 bhp) and 235 N⋅m (173 lb⋅ft). Five-valve technology was also added to a reengineered V6 family of engines in 1997, starting with the 2.8-litre V6 30v, which now produced 193 PS (142 kW; 190 bhp), followed by a 2.4-litre V6 which was a downsize from the previous 2.6 litre, 150 hp (112 kW) engine, but with a power increase to 165 PS (121 kW; 163 bhp).
Audi also debuted their new tiptronic automatic transmission on the B5 platform, based on the unit Porsche developed for their 964-generation 911. The transmission is a conventional automatic gearbox with a torque converter offering the driver a fully-automatic operation or manual selection of the gear ratios.
The B5 marked Audi's continued move into the midsize luxury car segment, having started this trajectory notably with later model years of the preceding Audi 80/90 B4. Despite initial mechanical problems, overall build and assembly quality were lauded both by the automotive press and within Audi and Volkswagen, and at the time, parent company Volkswagen declared the B5 the company-wide build quality benchmark for all its other models.

THE CAR (A 2003 AUDI A4 CV CONVERTIBLE) BOUNCED AND MADE A SOUND THEN SHE STOPPED. I SAID TAKE THE KEYS OUT OF THE IGNITION TO HER BLACK SMOKE STARTED TO RISE OUT OF THE TOP OF THE HOOD CRACK IN FRONT OF THE FRONT WINDSHIELD. I TOLD HER TO GET THE DOG IN OUR BACK SEAT AND HERSELF OUT I ASSUMED IT WAS ON FIRE BECAUSE THE DARK SMOKE. I GRABBED MY PURSE PIPED THE HOOD AND MY DAUGHTER CALLED 911 AS THE NEIGHBORS RAN INSIDE THERE HOME FOR A FIRE EXTINGUISHER. TWO MEN FROM ACROSS THE STREET ATTEMPTED TO PUT IT OUT AS I SPOKE TO THE 911 OPERATOR. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED AND GOT THE FIRE OUT. MY CAR IS NOW JUNK. MY DAUGHTER WAS EMOTIONALLY STRAINED, HYSTERICAL THROUGHOUT THE INCIDENT. IT WAS TRAUMATIC FOR US BOTH. THE FIREFIGHTERS SAID IT WAS POSSIBLY CAUSED BY ELECTRICAL MALFUNCTIONS.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-09-02
- VIN: WAUAC48H93K
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I BOUGHT AN USED 2003 AUDI A4. I PUT IT IN REVERSE AND IT WOULD NOT ENGAGE. THEN THE DASH WHERE THE GEARS SHOW WHAT GEAR YOU'RE IN STARTED FLASHING. IT SHOWED A P0706 CODE. THIS HAPPENS SO OFTEN THAT ONE OF THESE TIMES I AM GOING TO CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. THE CAR HAS OVER 100,000 MILES ON IT, BUT HOW CAN IT BE MY FAULT THAT THE OTHER OWNERS DID NOT TAKE IT IN TO GET THIS WELL KNOWN MODULE REPAIR FIXED. WHEN I AM PARKED FLAT I CAN USUALLY GET IT IN REVERSE AFTER 4-5 TIMES OF TRYING. BUT...WHEN I AM ON ANY SLANT IT TAKES AT LEAST 10 TIMES OF TRYING ALMOST TO THE POINT OF GETTING OUT AND PUSHING IT IN REVERSE MYSELF!! ONE OF THESE DAYS I AM GOING TO HIT A CAR BEHIND ME TRYING TO GET OUT OF MY PARKING SPOT!! I KNOW THERE WAS A RECALL AND I'M JUST WONDERING WHY A CURRENT OWNER OF THE CAR THAT OBVIOUSLY IS DOING THIS CAN'T GET IT FIXED AS THERE WAS A RECALL.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-07-29
- VIN: WAUAT48H13K
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: MY 2003 AUDI A4 CABRIOLET HAS THE INFAMOUS P0706 CODE, WHICH IS A ERROR CODE INDICATING THE FAILURE OF THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE. IN MY CASE, MY AUDI SLIPS WHILE REVERSING AND CAUSES A HAZARD WHEN I AM REVERSING, ESPECIALLY WHILE IN A TIGHT OR CLUTTERED SPOT. IT ALSO HAS THE PRND BLINKING DUE TO THE DEFECTIVE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE. MANY OTHER AUDI A4S WITH CVT TRANSMISSIONS HAVE HAD THIS FAILURE, WHICH HAS LED TO A LAWSUIT. I RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER THAT STATED I WOULD BE ABLE TO GET A FREE REPAIR, BUT I WAS REFUSED BECAUSE MY CAR HAD OVER 100000 MILES ON IT, BUT THE PROBLEM OCCURRED LONG BEFORE THAT. I NEED TO GET THIS PROBLEM FIXED. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-06-22
- VIN: WAUAC48H43K
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE LAST YEAR WHEN IT HAD 78,000 MILES ON IT. ONLY 4 MONTHS AFTER HAVING PURCHASED THE CAR, I GOT A MESSAGE ON THE TROUBLE LIGHT WARNING SYSTEM THAT I HAD A "DIPPED LIGHT". I HAD TO GOOGLE OTHER AUDI OWNERS TO FIND OUT WHAT A DIPPED LIGHT WAS, AS I NEVER HEARD OF A BURNED OUT HEADLIGHT TERMED AS A "DIPPED LIGHT" BEFORE. I CAN ONLY DRIVE IT DURING THE DAY NOW, AS I HAVE HEARD IN CAR FORUMS THAT FIXING IT CAN BE QUITE A LONG AND EXPENSIVE PROCESS. I AM AFRAID THAT IT MAY AFFECT MY DRIVING SAFETY EVEN WHEN DRIVING DURING THE DAY, BECAUSE IN FLORIDA WE HAVE A LOT OF STORMY WEATHER DURING THE RAINY SEASON AND THE SKY GETS VERY DARK RIGHT BEFORE THE STORMS COME IN. I AM ALSO CONCERNED THAT OTHER MOTORISTS CANNOT SEE ME COMING IN BAD WEATHER AND I HAD A NEAR ACCIDENT TODAY, WHEN ANOTHER MOTORIST CAME FLYING OUT OF A PARKING LOT IN FRONT OF ME AS I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD, AND I HAD TO SLAM ON MY BRAKES TO AVOID A COLLISION WITH THEIR VEHICLE.

I have owned this car for 5 years since purchasing it new. I absolutely love the handling, performance, and smooth, quiet ride, especially in the snow. However, I have had to replace the power steering pump, cracked vacuum tubes, and oxygen sensors once the vehicle was off warranty and still under 50,000 miles. It has cost me around $100 per month for repairs since the warranty expired, which is not exactly what I expected from such a fine car. Interestingly, I have read many owner reviews that describe similar issues. Despite these setbacks, I still enjoy driving this car, but I am not sure if I will purchase another Audi.

The car is really amazing! The 5-speed is gear-limited at 138 MPH, but it gets there quickly with the 1.8T engine. It's definitely worth taking for a test drive - that's all it takes! One good pull away from a red light and you'll be hooked. If you're looking for luxury, you won't be disappointed - this car has more features than any of the new Lincolns, Cadillacs, or BMWs I've sat in. And if you're looking for economy, it's not too shabby - I'm seeing an average of 26 MPG mixed city and highway (about 60/40% respectively).

Judge cars not by their price, but their quality. And this car excels in both departments! :)

You've had the A4 V6 Cabriolet for 3 months and it's been a very enjoyable ride. The car is tightly built and you've had a number of convertibles before, but this is the first 4 seater. You tested the BMW 3 series convertible and the Merc 320 clk convertible, but the Audi was the best allrounder. The rear has good room with ample leg room and a good size trunk (for a convertible) even with the top down.

What a beautiful convertible! I love how the wind and noise levels are pleasantly low when the top is down. Even with the top up, it's just as comfortable as a sedan, which is fantastic. The interior design and amenities are so luxurious, and everything is perfectly crafted. Audi is definitely a class leader when it comes to fit and finish. The 3.0 V6 engine paired with the high-tech Multitronic transmission results in such smooth acceleration. It's amazing how powerful it is, yet still fuel efficient, especially for a car that weighs 3800 lbs. The only thing I regret is not getting the Sport Package, but I can always add after-market springs to remedy that. Overall, I'm so impressed with this car!

I have had some issues with this car, including having to replace the motor and turbo, the electrical system, CVT, multiple headlights and brake lights. I was initially concerned about the cost, but Audi eventually paid for it after a threatened lawsuit. Unfortunately, I am still experiencing some issues, including the check engine light coming on for the third time despite the motor being only one year old. I have spent $1500 so far trying to resolve the issue. Additionally, there was an unusual wear on my front tires, which was caused by a front end alignment problem that was eventually resolved. Overall, I have had some challenges with this car, but I am hopeful that the issues will be resolved soon.

I purchased two 2003 Audi A4's simultaneously. Unfortunately, after the warranty expired, both cars began to experience similar defects. Over the course of just two years, a multitude of issues have arisen with both vehicles, rendering them both unreliable. Despite spending almost $3K on two visits to the Audi dealership, they were unable to diagnose the problem. Regrettably, the turbo exploded in one of the cars, causing damage to the engine. Both cars have become a financial burden, and I am considering selling them at a loss. It is my recommendation that you avoid purchasing these cars.

I strongly advise against purchasing an Audi or VW due to the numerous design flaws and maintenance issues. My personal experience with these vehicles has been extremely disappointing. The fan control unit recently malfunctioned, which is apparently a common issue, and the replacement part cost a staggering $400. Additionally, the vehicle's low ground clearance caused the oil pan to crack when I hit a speed bump, which would not have happened if it was made of steel like other manufacturers. The transmission oil is difficult to fill and check, and failure to change it regularly can result in costly damage to the transmission. The motor is also prone to falling apart due to the abundance of plastic pieces. Overall, I strongly recommend avoiding Audi and VW vehicles to save yourself from the hassle and expense of constant repairs and maintenance.

Although the lemon has a pretty appearance, it is not worth the cost of the tires. Unfortunately, it has proven to be very unreliable. Despite purchasing it for my daughter, a college student, she has been stranded multiple times, leading to AAA canceling our contract after only 4 months. The car has required several sensor replacements and headlight replacements, each costing $300. Additionally, the CVT went out, and we had to replace the timing belt at only 80K, costing $1500. On Saturday morning, my daughter called to inform me that the check engine light had come back on. However, I am confident that we will be able to resolve these issues and make the car more reliable in the future.
