1997 Audi A4 problems
The Audi A4 is a line of luxury compact executive cars produced since 1994 by the German car manufacturer Audi, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. The A4 has been built in five generations and is based on the Volkswagen Group B platform. The first generation A4 succeeded the Audi 80. The automaker's internal numbering treats the A4 as a continuation of the Audi 80 lineage, with the initial A4 designated as the B5-series, followed by the B6, B7, B8, and the B9.
The B8 and B9 versions of the A4 are built on the Volkswagen Group MLB platform shared with several models and brands across the Volkswagen Group. The Audi A4 automobile layout consists of a front-engine design, with transaxle-type transmissions mounted at the rear of the engine. The cars are front-wheel drive, or on some models, "quattro" all-wheel drive. The A4 is available as a sedan and station wagon. Historically, the second (B6) and third generations (B7) of the A4 also included a convertible version. For the fourth generation (B8) and onwards, the convertible, along with a new coupé and 5-door liftback variant, was spun-off by Audi into a new nameplate called the Audi A5.
B5 (Typ 8D; 1994)
The first generation Audi A4 (known internally as the Typ 8D) debuted in October 1994, with production starting November 1994 and European sales commencing in January 1995 for the 1995 model year. North American sales later began in September 1995 for the 1996 model year. It was built on the Volkswagen Group B5 (PL45) platform, which it shared with the fourth generation Volkswagen Passat (B5, Typ 3B). It had a front-mounted longitudinal engine and front-wheel drive. Many variations of the A4 were also available with Audi's quattro four-wheel drive system. The A4 was initially introduced as a four-door saloon/sedan; the Avant (estate/wagon) was introduced in November 1995 and went on sale in February 1996.
Development began in 1988, with the first design sketches being created later that year. By 1991, an exterior design by Imre Hasanic was chosen and frozen for November 1994 production by 1992. The interior design was later finalized in 1992, with pilot production commencing in the first half of 1994. Development concluded in the third quarter of 1994, preceding November 1994 start of production.
A wide range of engines were available in European markets, between 1.6 and 2.8 litres for petrol engines; and a 1.9-litre diesel engine available with Volkswagen Group's VE technology, capable of achieving a 90 PS (66 kW; 89 bhp) or 110 PS (81 kW; 108 bhp). The 2.6 and 2.8-litre V6 engines which had been carried over from the old 80/90 proved popular, although in North America, the 2.8-litre engine was the only V6 that was available there until 1997. A 2.4-liter version was developed especially for the Thai market, where import duty jumped from 60 to 100 percent on cars of over 2,400 cc displacement.
The Audi A4 was the first model in the Volkswagen Group to feature the new 1.8-litre 20v engine with five valves per cylinder, based on the unit Audi Sport had developed for their Supertouring race car. A turbocharged 1.8T version produced 150 PS (110 kW; 148 bhp) and 210 N⋅m (155 lb⋅ft) torque. Moreover, a quattro GmbH special edition of the B5 1.8T was later available in Germany and Europe, for which the engine's power output was raised to 180 PS (132 kW; 178 bhp) and 235 N⋅m (173 lb⋅ft). Five-valve technology was also added to a reengineered V6 family of engines in 1997, starting with the 2.8-litre V6 30v, which now produced 193 PS (142 kW; 190 bhp), followed by a 2.4-litre V6 which was a downsize from the previous 2.6 litre, 150 hp (112 kW) engine, but with a power increase to 165 PS (121 kW; 163 bhp).
Audi also debuted their new tiptronic automatic transmission on the B5 platform, based on the unit Porsche developed for their 964-generation 911. The transmission is a conventional automatic gearbox with a torque converter offering the driver a fully-automatic operation or manual selection of the gear ratios.
The B5 marked Audi's continued move into the midsize luxury car segment, having started this trajectory notably with later model years of the preceding Audi 80/90 B4. Despite initial mechanical problems, overall build and assembly quality were lauded both by the automotive press and within Audi and Volkswagen, and at the time, parent company Volkswagen declared the B5 the company-wide build quality benchmark for all its other models.

- Summary: THE LOWER FRONT CONTROL ARMS IN MY '97 AUDI A4 1.8T QUATTRO WERE REPLACED BY AN AUTHORIZED AUDI DEALER AS PART OF A VOLUNTARY RECALL CAMPAIGN IN 2004 BY AUDI TO REPLACE A NOTED DEFECTIVE PART. A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT BROUGHT AGAINST AUDI BY SEVERAL OWNERS SPURRED THE VOLUNTARY RECALL. MY LOWER CONTROL ARMS NEED REPLACING AGAIN, BASED ON AN INSPECTION BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. WHEN I CONTACTED AUDI CUSTOMER SERVICE I WAS TOLD THAT THE 2004 CONTROL ARM RECALL HAD A ONE-YEAR WARRANTY AND AFTER THAT TIME I WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPLACEMENT COST, WHICH EXCEEDS $2,000 FOR THE LOWER FRONT CONTROL ARMS. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS DEFECTIVE PART NEEDS REPLACING AND IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE. NUMEROUS AUDI OWNERS HAVE REPORTED REPEATED LOWER CONTROL ARM FAILURE AND NHTSA IS URGED TO CALL A MANDATORY RECALL FOR AUDI TO REPAIR THIS DEFECTIVE PART SO IT DOES NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED BY OWNERS EVERY FEW YEARS. *TR
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-06-14
- VIN: WAUCB88DXVA
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I RECEIVED SAFETY RECALL JS FOR THE AUDI A4 IGNITION SWITCH IN NOVEMBER 2006 AND COMPLIED WITH THE INSTRUCTIONS BY BRINGING THE CAR TO THE DEALER FOR A REPLACEMENT SWITCH IN JANUARY 2007. THE DEALER DID NOT DO THE REPAIR BECAUSE THEY SAID MY CAR ALREADY HAD THE CORRECT SWITCH. IN JUNE 2008, THIS IGNITION SWITCH MALFUNCTIONED IN THE EXACT MANNER DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL. WHEN I STARTED THE ENGINE, I HEARD A CRACK IN THE IGNITION SWITCH AND THEN THE ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS, INCLUDING DASHBOARD LIGHTS, HORN, TURN SIGNAL, WINDSHIELD WIPERS, AND AIR CONDITIONING, IMMEDIATELY BECAME INOPERATIVE. WHEN I TURNED OFF THE ENGINE, THE KEY WOULD NOT RETURN TO THE OFF POSITION AND HAD TO BE PULLED OUT BY FORCE AND SUBSEQUENTLY FORCED BACK IN TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL FOR THE TOW TRUCK. I CONTACTED BOTH THE DEALER AND AUDI CUSTOMER RELATIONS ABOUT THE PROBLEM, BUT SINCE THE RECALL HAD BEEN CLOSED BY THIS TIME, NO ONE WAS WILLING TO CONSIDER THE POSSIBILITY THAT THE REPAIR HAD NOT BEEN DONE PROPERLY OR THAT THE IGNITION SWITCH IN MY CAR, WHICH THEY HAD PREVIOUSLY CLAIMED WAS THE CORRECT ONE, WAS JUST AS DEFECTIVE AS THE RECALLED SWITCH. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP AND HAD THE SWITCH REPLACED AT MY OWN EXPENSE. I ASKED FOR REIMBURSEMENT FROM AUDI, BUT THEY REFUSED. *TR
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-01-13
- VIN: WAUEA88D1VA
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1997 AUDI A4. IN JANUARY OF 2004, THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED OF A RECALL ON HIS VEHICLE REGARDING THE IGNITION SWITCH. THE DEALER PERFORMED THE RECALL REPAIR FOR FREE; HOWEVER, THE IGNITION SWITCH FAILED IN 2007. THE DEALER CONDUCTED A VISUAL INSPECTION. A TECHNICIAN STATED THAT BECAUSE THE REPLACEMENT HAD BEEN DONE IN 2004, A NEW IGNITION SWITCH WOULD NOT BE NECESSARY. ON JUNE 9, 2008, THE IGNITION SWITCHED FAILED AGAIN. WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURRED, THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO TURN OFF THE VEHICLE. AS A RESULT, THE BATTERY DRAINED. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AGAIN AND THEY STATED ONCE MORE THAT BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED UNDER RECALL, THEY WERE NOT RESPONSIBLE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AT THE OWNER'S EXPENSE. THE RECALL NUMBER WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 67,487 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 141,500.
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-12-26
- Crash: 1
- VIN: WAUCB88D5VA
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: 1) FAILURE OF FRONT LEFT (DRIVER SIDE) HYDRAULIC BRAKE HOSE AT CALIPER END AT INBOARD SIDE OF HOSE STRAIN RELIEF. THE DAMAGE LOCATION APPEARS TO BE WHERE HOSE IS SUBJECT TO MAXIMUM STRESS AND FLEXING WHEN FRONT WHEELS TURN. FURTHER INSPECTION REVEALED CONCEALED DAMAGE TO RIGHT (PASSENGER) FRONT BRAKE HOSE AT THE SAME LOCATION. 2) CONSEQUENCE WAS LOSS OF ALL HYDRAULIC BRAKING WHEN HOSE BURST, RESULTING IN MINOR ACCIDENT. DAMAGE TO VEHICLES WAS MINOR BECAUSE OF GOOD FORTUNE TO HAVE FAILURE AT LOW SPEED--NO INJURIES RESULTED. 3) FRONT HYDRAULIC BRAKE HOSES WERE REPLACED WITH NEW OEM HOSES SUPPLIED BY AUDI DEALER. BECAUSE BOTH HOSES EXHIBITED SIMILAR WEAR, OTHER AUDI A4 VEHICLES 10 YEARS OLD AND/OR WITH 100,000+ MILES MAY BE SUBJECT TO SIMILAR FRONT BRAKE HOSE FAILURES. *TR

- Summary: (1)I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE (LE RECALL) FROM AUDI OF AMERICA ON THE IGNITION SWITCH ON MY 1997 A4 SEDAN. THE RECALL WORK WAS PERFORMED ON 1/29/03. AT THAT POINT IN TIME THE ORIGINAL IGNITION SWITCH HAD BEEN PERFORMING CORRECTLY FOR 59 MONTHS BUT I HAD IT REPLACED BECAUSE OF AUDI'S RECOMMENDATION; NOT BECAUSE IT HAD A MALFUNCTION. (2)IN JULY OF 2004 THE REPLACEMENT IGNITION SWITCH FAILED AFTER APPROXIMATELY 18 MONTHS OF SERVICE. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WHILE I WAS VISITING ST. AUGUSTINE, FLORIDA. I NOTICED THAT THE A/C WAS NOT BLOWING COLD AIR. AS I WAS DRIVING BACK IN TO THE TOWN OF ST. AUGUSTINE I HEARD WHAT SOUNDED LIKE SOMETHING DRAGGING UNDER THE CAR. I PULLED INTO A PARKING LOT AND THEN FOUND THE CAR WOULD NOT RE-START. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE NEAREST AUDI DEALER IN JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA AND THEN RENTED A CAR TO GET BACK HOME TO TAMPA, FLORIDA. THE BILL FROM THE JACKSONVILLE DEALERSHIP WAS $1758 TO REPLACE THE IGNITION SWITCH AND THE STARTER MOTOR. I ALSO INCURRED A $150 TOWING FEE AND APPROX $70 RENTAL CAR FEE. (3)AFTER THE REPAIRS I CONTACTED AUDI OF AMERICA BUT THEY SAID THEY ONLY WARRANTY REPLACED PARTS FOR 12 MONTHS. SINCE THIS SWITCH LASTED 18 MONTHS IT WAS MY RESPONSIBILITY TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS. I CONTEND THAT AUDI OF AMERICA DID NOT CORRECT THE DEFECT, IN FACT, THEY MADE IT CONSIDERABLY WORSE. VIN OF 1997 A4 IS [XXX](4) PLEASE NOTE: I AM ALSO THE OWNER OF A 1996 A4 SEDAN. I WILL OPEN ANOTHER INCIDENT REPORT FOR THAT AUTOMOBILE. *JB UPDATED 07/18/2012 *JS *JS INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

- Summary: I HAVE A 1997 AUDI A4 Q THAT HAS A COMMON DEFECT WITH THE IGNITION SWITCH. THIS IS A VERY WELL KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THESE CARS AND BECAUSE OF THE DEFECT THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL ALREADY DONE FOR THIS CAR (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 00V317000) AS OF OCT 06,2000. I CALLED THE A LOCAL DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER AND GAVE THEM MY VIN # AND THEY CLAIM MY CAR WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. HOWEVER, I WENT TO THE NHTSA WEBSITE AND LOOKED AT THE MAKE, MODEL AND YEAR OF MY CAR AND IT DOES SHOW THAT THE YEAR OF MY CAR WAS INCLUDED. IN FACT, I WAS EVEN ABLE TO PRINT OFF SEVERAL DOCUMENTS REFERRING TO THE RECALL AND IT DOES SHOW THAT MY VIN IS ACTUALLY INCLUDED (VIN RANGES WAU---8D-VA000181 TO WAU---8D-VA294397). QUOTING THE RECALL LETTER; "THE PLASTIC IGNITION SWITCH HOUSING CAN FRACTURE AT THE RETURN SPRING ANCHOR POINT. FRACTURE OF THE HOUSING COULD CAUSE THE RETURN SPRING FORCE TO BE INSUFFICIENT FOR RETURNING THE IGNITION KEY TO THE RUNNING POSITION AFTER STARTING THE ENGINE. 1997 Audi A4 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 8 recalls for different components of the 1997 Audi A4.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Audi) is recalling certain 1998 Audi A8 and 1997-1998 Audi A4 vehicles equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) that do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflator may absorb moisture, causing the inflator to explode or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
- Consequence: The inflator could explode during air bag deployment, resulting in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Dealers will replace the driver's air bag inflator with an alternative inflator of a different design, free of charge. Owner notification letters were sent September 21, 2021. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Audi's number for this recall is 69BT. The vehicles in this recall were mistakenly omitted from recall 20V-056. All vehicle owners have already been notified by mail and informed that the remedy is available.

Your A4 sounds like an amazing car! I'm so glad to hear that you've fallen in love with it. It's impressive that even after 15 years and 215,000 miles, it still runs like a dream. The fuel economy is also quite impressive, especially for a V6. It's great to hear that you've only had one minor issue with the EGR code, which you were able to resolve. Overall, it sounds like you made a fantastic purchase and I hope you continue to enjoy your A4 for many more years to come!

The car is definitely fun to drive, but unfortunately, it has not been as reliable as expected. The belt tensioner failed at 60K, costing $700 to repair, and the ECM failed at 70K, costing $600 to repair, in addition to electrical and AC problems. Despite recommended service being done on time at an independent Audi shop, parts should not be failing at this rate. The Audi service manager acknowledged that these vehicles exhibit problems and listed about 10. They suggested buying a 2005 A4 instead. While my company cars (Ford, Chevys) are more reliable, they are not as fun to drive. We have decided to sell this A4 and purchase a new 06 Civic, which is also fun to drive, has a tight body, and go-kart handling. It is not worth the money to replace poorly designed components when you can get the same performance, looks, etc. in other cars.

I love this car! I bought it used at 85k miles and have put 117000 miles on it now. It's smooth and has good pep, not a barn burner, but adequate. The naturally aspirated FI V6 is very nice. The car is solid like a Benz and has a strong hint of Porsche in it. It handles great in the snow, never spinning its wheels. I recently bought a 2004 model and I like it even more! Although repairs can be expensive, it's still worth it. However, leasing a new one covered by warranty may be a cheaper option. After all, nothing lasts forever...

I bought my A4 two years ago and also purchased an extended warranty. I was pleased to have the turbo replaced under warranty. The AWD is perfect for Michigan winters, and I have found the rust protection to be very effective. I intend to keep this car for a long time.

This car has been fantastic to own! I haven't experienced any of the mechanical failures that other edmunds.com owners have reported. It drives beautifully and looks stunning. After a car wash, people think it's brand new! It was an amazing buy, especially considering the cost of a 3-series of the same year.

This car was a terrible investment. While it may provide an enjoyable driving experience, the cost of repairs alone will undoubtedly drain your finances.

The vehicle was running smoothly until it hit 90,000 miles, when it started experiencing some front end issues. Unfortunately, the control arms - of which there are 8 - needed to be fixed, which cost around $3200. Additionally, the suspension repairs can be quite expensive.

I love the look of this car, but unfortunately, it hasn't held up as well as I had hoped. These cars can be a bit finicky, and it's important to use synthetic oil to avoid any potential issues. Unfortunately, my car didn't make it past 150k miles due to oil sludge, which is a shame for a car built in the 90s. While I did give it regular 3k oil changes, I used normal oil which may have contributed to the problem. Additionally, this car required frequent trips to the garage for various issues such as suspension failures, cat converters going out, water pump, cracked fluid reservoirs, valve gasket leaks, and more. I hope Audi can take pride in addressing these issues in the future.

I had a negative experience with my A4. Between 0-80000 miles, it ran perfectly, but on its 80000m birthday, it started having huge problems. I had to deal with a major oil leak, broken gasket, usual timing belt replacement, cracked heating pipe, and electric switch on transmission failure, among other things. In a 3 month period, I averaged close to $3k in car repairs and it has never run the same. If you plan on keeping the A4 for longer than 5 years, be prepared to have it in the shop for 4 weeks each year while the dealer complains it cannot get parts from Germany or back East. I have decided to switch to Infinity, Lexis, Honda. Thank you for reading.

I purchased my Audi A4 1.8T back in 2000 and it has been an absolute joy to drive. It handles well in the snow and has provided me with many fun and memorable driving experiences. However, after putting around 50,000 miles on it, I began to notice some rattling. While I have had some negative experiences with dealerships and their customer service, I have found that the parts and labor charges can be quite expensive. Additionally, electrical problems have arisen that have cost me around $1,500 each to fix. It is important to be aware of the potential maintenance costs associated with this car. Despite these challenges, I still find myself torn between purchasing a G35 or a new A4.
