2017 Audi A4 problems

The Audi A4 is a line of luxury compact executive cars produced since 1994 by the German car manufacturer Audi, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. The A4 has been built in five generations and is based on the Volkswagen Group B platform. The first generation A4 succeeded the Audi 80. The automaker's internal numbering treats the A4 as a continuation of the Audi 80 lineage, with the initial A4 designated as the B5-series, followed by the B6, B7, B8, and the B9.

The B8 and B9 versions of the A4 are built on the Volkswagen Group MLB platform shared with several models and brands across the Volkswagen Group. The Audi A4 automobile layout consists of a front-engine design, with transaxle-type transmissions mounted at the rear of the engine. The cars are front-wheel drive, or on some models, "quattro" all-wheel drive. The A4 is available as a sedan and station wagon. Historically, the second (B6) and third generations (B7) of the A4 also included a convertible version. For the fourth generation (B8) and onwards, the convertible, along with a new coupé and 5-door liftback variant, was spun-off by Audi into a new nameplate called the Audi A5.

B5 (Typ 8D; 1994)

The first generation Audi A4 (known internally as the Typ 8D) debuted in October 1994, with production starting November 1994 and European sales commencing in January 1995 for the 1995 model year. North American sales later began in September 1995 for the 1996 model year. It was built on the Volkswagen Group B5 (PL45) platform, which it shared with the fourth generation Volkswagen Passat (B5, Typ 3B). It had a front-mounted longitudinal engine and front-wheel drive. Many variations of the A4 were also available with Audi's quattro four-wheel drive system. The A4 was initially introduced as a four-door saloon/sedan; the Avant (estate/wagon) was introduced in November 1995 and went on sale in February 1996.

Development began in 1988, with the first design sketches being created later that year. By 1991, an exterior design by Imre Hasanic was chosen and frozen for November 1994 production by 1992. The interior design was later finalized in 1992, with pilot production commencing in the first half of 1994. Development concluded in the third quarter of 1994, preceding November 1994 start of production.

A wide range of engines were available in European markets, between 1.6 and 2.8 litres for petrol engines; and a 1.9-litre diesel engine available with Volkswagen Group's VE technology, capable of achieving a 90 PS (66 kW; 89 bhp) or 110 PS (81 kW; 108 bhp). The 2.6 and 2.8-litre V6 engines which had been carried over from the old 80/90 proved popular, although in North America, the 2.8-litre engine was the only V6 that was available there until 1997. A 2.4-liter version was developed especially for the Thai market, where import duty jumped from 60 to 100 percent on cars of over 2,400 cc displacement.

The Audi A4 was the first model in the Volkswagen Group to feature the new 1.8-litre 20v engine with five valves per cylinder, based on the unit Audi Sport had developed for their Supertouring race car. A turbocharged 1.8T version produced 150 PS (110 kW; 148 bhp) and 210 N⋅m (155 lb⋅ft) torque. Moreover, a quattro GmbH special edition of the B5 1.8T was later available in Germany and Europe, for which the engine's power output was raised to 180 PS (132 kW; 178 bhp) and 235 N⋅m (173 lb⋅ft). Five-valve technology was also added to a reengineered V6 family of engines in 1997, starting with the 2.8-litre V6 30v, which now produced 193 PS (142 kW; 190 bhp), followed by a 2.4-litre V6 which was a downsize from the previous 2.6 litre, 150 hp (112 kW) engine, but with a power increase to 165 PS (121 kW; 163 bhp).

Audi also debuted their new tiptronic automatic transmission on the B5 platform, based on the unit Porsche developed for their 964-generation 911. The transmission is a conventional automatic gearbox with a torque converter offering the driver a fully-automatic operation or manual selection of the gear ratios.

The B5 marked Audi's continued move into the midsize luxury car segment, having started this trajectory notably with later model years of the preceding Audi 80/90 B4. Despite initial mechanical problems, overall build and assembly quality were lauded both by the automotive press and within Audi and Volkswagen, and at the time, parent company Volkswagen declared the B5 the company-wide build quality benchmark for all its other models.

Common 2017 Audi A4 problems

The Audi A4, a compact executive sedan, is known for its sleek design, well-balanced handling, and premium interior:

  • High Oil Consumption: Some A4 owners have reported that their car is using excessive amounts of oil. This can be caused by a number of factors, including worn piston rings or valve seals, a clogged PCV valve, or a problem with the oil control valve. If you notice that your A4 is using more oil than it should, take it to a qualified mechanic for a diagnosis. Depending on the cause of the problem, the technician may recommend replacing the piston rings, valve seals, PCV valve, or oil control valve.
  • Leaking Coolant: Another common complaint from A4 owners is that their car is leaking coolant from the water pump housing. This problem is often caused by a failed water pump, which is a vital part of the car's cooling system. Water pumps are designed to last for at least 70,000 miles, but many A4 owners have reported failures well before that mileage. If you notice coolant leaking from your A4, the problem is likely related to a failed water pump. Run a VIN check to see if your car has been affected by any water pump recalls, and if not, have the water pump replaced by a qualified technician.
  • Transmission Woes: Some A4 owners have reported problems with their car's transmission, including slipping gears, hesitation when shifting, and a lack of power. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn transmission components, low fluid levels, or a problem with the transmission control module. If you're experiencing transmission problems, take your A4 to a qualified mechanic for diagnosis. Depending on the cause of the problem, the technician may recommend replacing worn transmission components, adding transmission fluid, or replacing the transmission control module.
  • Camshaft Adjuster Issues: The camshaft adjuster is responsible for controlling the timing of the engine's valves. Some A4 owners have reported problems with this component, which can lead to poor engine performance, reduced fuel efficiency, and increased emissions. If your A4 is experiencing poor engine performance, reduced fuel efficiency, or increased emissions, take it to a qualified mechanic for a diagnosis. If the camshaft adjuster is the problem, it will need to be replaced by a qualified technician.
  • Flickering Headlights: Many A4 owners who have xenon headlights have reported that the headlights flicker and go out while driving, making it difficult to see at night. The most frequent causes of this problem are a faulty ballast, a dying xenon bulb, or bad/loose wiring/connections. If you’re experiencing this problem, try turning the headlights off and on again for a quick, temporary fix. Another solution is to check the connections on the bulb inside the headlight or switching the xenon bulbs from one side to the other. If the problem persists, it is most likely caused by a defective ballast.
  • No Manual Transmission: The A4 received a refresh in 2019 and was no longer offered with a six-speed manual transmission. This can be a dealbreaker for some enthusiasts who enjoy the fun of changing gears when driving. If you’re looking for an A4 with a manual transmission, you’ll need to look for older models that were offered with this option.
  • Ignition Coil Issues: A significant number of A4 owners have reported premature failure of ignition coils, particularly in early to mid-2000s models. Symptoms of a faulty ignition coil include breakdowns, poor fuel economy, backfiring, jerking and vibrating, misfiring engine, hard starts, stalling, and spluttering and coughing sounds. To check if your car is included in the recall which covered certain 2001, 2002, and 2003 Audi A4s, if not the only solution is to pay for the ignition coil to be replaced.

These are some of the most common problems reported by Audi A4 owners. If you're experiencing any of these issues, it's important to take your car to a qualified mechanic for diagnosis and repair. Regular maintenance and inspections can also help prevent these problems from occurring in the first place.

AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-08-05
  • VIN: WAUENAF42HN
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEATS
  • Summary: NHTSA RECALL 19V547 -- I RECENTLY EXPERIENCED THE ISSUE WITH MY 2017 AUDI A4 IN WHICH THE PASSENGER OCCUPANT DETECTION SYSTEM HAS BECOME FAULTY. AS A RESULT OF THIS ISSUE, MY PASSENGER AIR BAG WILL SHUT OFF AS IT IS NOT DETECTING A PASSENGER IN THE VEHICLE EVEN WHEN ONE IS PRESENT. I CONTACTED MY AUDI DEALER WHO TOLD ME THEY WERE AWARE OF THIS ISSUE BUT DID NOT HAVE THE PARTS TO FIX THE PROBLEM AT THAT TIME. THIS WAS OVER A MONTH AGO AND REMAINS AN ISSUE. WITH NO OTHER FORM OF TRANSPORTATION, WE ARE FORCED TO DRIVE A CAR WITHOUT A PASSENGER AIR BAG INTERMITTENTLY. THIS IS A SERIOUS RISK TO OUR FAMILY. I BROUGHT THIS UP AGAIN TO OUR DEALER, THEY INFORMED ME THAT IF I WANTED TO TRADE THIS VEHICLE IN, THEY WOULD GIVE ME A $500 ALLOWANCE TOWARDS A NEW CAR. THIS DOES NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM AND EVEN NOW THEY WILL NOT SCHEDULE MY CAR FOR SERVICE AS THEY DO NOT HAVE THE PARTS TO SUPPORT THE REPAIR. THIS IS A MAJOR RISK TO MY FAMILY. IT OCCURS RANDOMLY DURING MOTION. AT EVEN 30 MPH A COLLISION WOULD RENDER MY PASSENGER UNPROTECTED. I AM NOT SURE WHAT I CAN DO RIGHT NOW TO KEEP THIS UNSAFE VEHICLE ON THE ROAD.

  • Summary: THIS IS A TIRE COMPLAINT ABOUT CONTINENTAL CONTIPROCONTACT 245/40/R18 79H TIRES. AUDI PRESTIGE A4 WAS PURCHASED FROM DEALER, FLETCHER JONES AUDI IN CHICAGO, ON 12/29/17. IT HAD BEEN A DEALER DEMONSTRATOR AND HAD VERY LOW MILEAGE. IT IS USED MOSTLY FOR CITY LOW SPEED DRIVING. ON 4/25/18 ALL 4 TIRES HAD MULTIPLE BUBBLES IN SIDEWALLS AND REQUIRED REPLACEMENT. NEW TIRES WITH WARRANTY WERE PURCHASED FROM DEALER. ON 7/6/18 ONE TIRE WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. ON 1/18/19 ONE TIRE WAS REPLACED WITH BUBBLES. ON 3/24/19 3 TIRES WERE REPLACED WITH MULTIPLE BUBBLES IN SIDEWALLS. ON 4/24/19 ANOTHER TIRE WAS REPLACED WITH BUBBLES IN SIDEWALL. AS A SCIENTIST I HAVE DIFFICULTY BELIEVING THAT THIS IS JUST BAD LUCK. THIS LOOKS TO ME LIKE POOR ENGINEERING OR A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. MY TIRES WERE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY, AND TO THIS POINT MY PERSONAL EXPENSE HAS BEEN LOW. WE HAVE NOT HAD AN ACTUAL BLOWOUT OR ACCIDENT. NEVERTHELESS, I HAVE SAFETY CONCERNS FOR MYSELF AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC. THERE MUST BE SOMETHING DEFECTIVE IN THESE TIRES -- AND BEFORE ANOTHER PERSON GETS INJURED OR KILLED FROM A BLOWOUT

A FEW SECONDS TO A MINUTE OR TWO LATER ANOTHER MESSAGE SAYS THE AIR BAGS ARE ON. THIS SEQUENCE CAN APPEAR MANY TIMES IN AN HOUR OF DRIVING OR NOT APPEAR AT ALL FOR SEVERAL DAYS. I HAVE VERIFIED WITH THE DEALER THAT WHEN THE MESSAGE SAYS THE AIRBAGS ARE OFF, THEY REALLY ARE OFF. SO MY PASSENGER SOMETIMES LACKS THE PROTECTION AFFORDED BY THE AIR BAGS.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-07-30
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: WAUENAF4XHN
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: AFTER PARKING MY CAR, MY DAUGHTER, THE PASSENGER IN THE RIGHT BACK SEAT, OPENED THE DOOR TO GET OUT OF THE CAR. SHE SUDDENLY FELT ACUTE PAIN ON THE TOP OF HER FOOT AND SAW BLOOD GUSHING OUT OF IT. I WENT TO HER SIDE OF THE CAR AND SAW AN AVULSION OF THE SKIN ON THE TOP RIGHT OF THE FOOT, AND BLOOD ALL OVER THE FLOOR OF THE CAR AND THE DOOR. A SHARP PIECE OF METAL TRIM LABELED "BANG & OLUFSON" (SEE PHOTO) HAD SEMI-DETACHED FROM THE DOOR PANEL AND LACERATED HER FOOT, PIERCING THROUGH HER FOOT AND COMING OUT BETWEEN HER TOES. THIS METAL TRIM PIECE LOOKED LIKE A SHARP KNIFE BLADE, AND HAD COME OUT OF ITS GLUED SPOT ON THE DOOR, STICKING OUT AT A 25-30 DEGREE ANGLE. I PUT PRESSURE ON THE WOUND AND REMOVED THE PIECE FROM THE CAR TO PREVENT FURTHER INJURY, CUTTING MYSELF IN THE PROCESS. IT WAS COVERED WITH BLOOD. I IMMEDIATELY DROVE HER TO THE ER AT MERCY HOSPITAL. DR. MILLER, A PLASTIC SURGEON, SPENT 2 HOURS CLEANING THE WOUND, PULLING THE FLAYED SKIN BACK TO ITS ORIGINAL POSITION, AND STITCHING TENDONS AND BLOOD VESSELS THAT WERE AFFECTED IN THE INJURY. HE PLACED CONTINUOUS ABSORBABLE SUTURES THE LENGTH OF THE WOUND. (SEE PHOTO) SHE WAS DISCHARGED WITH ORDERS NOT TO WALK OR PUT ANY WEIGHT ON THE FOOT, EXCEPT TO GO TO THE BATHROOM, FOR AT LEAST 3 WEEKS. THE DOCTOR TOLD HER SHE MAY LOSE THE SKIN ON THE FOOT AND MAY HAVE TO RECEIVE SKIN GRAFTS TO REPAIR THE WOUND. MY DAUGHTER WAS IN EXCRUCIATING PAIN AND IT IS STILL UNKNOWN WHETHER SHE WILL HAVE PERMANENT SCARRING OR PAIN, OR IF SHE WILL REGAIN FULL FUNCTIONING OF THE FOOT. SHE HAS UNDERGONE A COURSE OF ANTIBIOTICS AND REMAINED ON BED REST FOR 30 DAYS SINCE THE INCIDENT. THE SHARP METAL BLADE WAS ONLY GLUED ON THE DOOR SURFACE, WITH NO SCREWS TO ATTACH IT TO THE DOOR. THIS IS WHAT APPEARED TO CAUSE THIS BLADE TO DETACH FROM THE DOOR AND STAB INTO MY DAUGHTER'S FOOT.

Negative 2017 Audi A4 car reviews

  1. Winston Price 2024-09-24

I have owned multiple Audi vehicles in the past, but unfortunately, I have had some negative experiences. The engine of my most recent Audi failed with less than 100K miles on it, and despite the fact that the vehicle was already paid off and not under warranty, Audi did not take responsibility for the issue and quoted me over 15K to replace the engine. Similarly, my 2009 A4 had an oil consumption issue that led to it being recalled and eventually ending up in the junk yard. Despite being only 5,000 miles over the recall coverage, Audi did not repair the vehicle. It's disappointing to have had these experiences, especially since every Audi I have owned has had a recall. I hope that Audi can improve the quality of their vehicles in the future.

The cabin and exterior design are excellent, with good quality materials. The car boasts top-of-the-line technology, making it a great choice for tech enthusiasts. However, if you're looking for a car that's fun to drive, this may not be the best option. On long trips, the car can behave like a front-wheel-drive vehicle, and the steering, even with the sport package, is not as responsive as other luxury brands like Mercedes, BMW, and Cadillac. The suspension, even with the adaptive option, is not as good as the three series. While the car is disappointing in terms of its sporting nature, it can still be a lot of fun to drive around town. Overall, the car is a great choice for those who prioritize tech features, safety, and fuel economy. However, if you're looking for a car with great road manners, you may want to consider other options. Update: The writer got an Alfa Romeo Giulia and has not looked back. While the interior is not as nicely finished as the A4, the drive is much more enjoyable. Hopefully, Audi can learn from its corporate cousin Porsche and create a vehicle that feels nice to drive. Audi has some of the best styling in the industry, and the fit and finish are great as well.

Hello, I drive a 2017 Audi A4 and unfortunately, I've been experiencing some issues with the programmable radio buttons and MMI. I took my car in for service, hoping for a repair under warranty, but was informed that the problem was likely due to liquids spilling onto the buttons, which is not covered by the warranty. While I agree with this diagnosis, I do believe that the design of the center console is flawed as the radio buttons are positioned directly next to the cup holders, making it almost impossible to avoid spilling liquid onto them. As a computer engineer since 1983, I can recognize a user interface design issue when I see one, but it doesn't take an engineer to see that the center console design could be improved. I reached out to Audi customer support at [email protected], but unfortunately, the customer service representative did not provide a final response even after waiting for almost two months. I had to escalate the issue and search the internet for another way to contact Audi, who agreed to cover only the parts ($600) but not the labor costs ($300). However, I did not accept this offer as I believe that the design of the center console is the root cause of this issue. It's inevitable that liquid will spill into the radio buttons given their position next to the cup holder. It's a shame that Audi has decided to lose a customer over what I believe is a design flaw. This is my second A4, and I must say that the cup holder of the 2012 A4 was not positioned next to the radio buttons. In 2017, Audi changed the console and created this problem.

I can't believe Audi came up with this Aluminum thing. When the sun hits it, it gets so glaring. And of course, around midday, the sun will surely hit it because the Audi design is so aerodynamic. This Aluminum thing reminds me of a similar design that Honda came up with about 12 years ago for its Civic. That was glaring too. But Honda dropped it. But Audi caught it and put it on its A4?? So I recommend paying extra for the dark wood or brown wood. About everything else, A4 is completely redesigned. I'm quite happy. I may write an update in 6 months.

I bought the car used with 50k miles on it and enjoyed it until it began to fall apart. Despite putting 20k mostly highway miles on it, I had to replace cracked engine mounts, worn struts, and a malfunctioning turbo that caused the 'engine malfunction' light to come on every time I accelerated. While I hope this was just a one-off issue, the high cost and disappointment of dealing with these problems has led me to sell the car and look elsewhere. I will not be considering Audi in the near future.

Positive 2017 Audi A4 car reviews

  1. Ulices Mraz 2025-01-08

I'm really enjoying the car so far! In my humble opinion, it's the best value in the small luxury sport sedan class this year. I have the premium plus trim and it has almost everything you could want. However, if you're looking for all possible safety features, you'll need to step up to the prestige trim. Additionally, the interior LED lights that allow you to change color are only available on the prestige; the premium plus only has white interior LED lights. Some websites say the car is slow off the line, but I haven't noticed. It feels amazingly smooth and easily goes 0-60 in 5 seconds. Also, some sites have criticized the car for non-responsive steering, but I disagree. The car feels nimble and smooth weaving in and out of traffic. My previous car was a 6-cylinder Infiniti G35, but this car feels faster and more agile and gets 10mpg better fuel efficiency. I took one long trip in the car on comfort ride and got 33mpg, averaging around 75mph. One thing I think could be improved is the engine auto-off; it's very noticeable and the car feels like it's stalling. It can be shut off, but I assume it will affect fuel economy.

  2. Cade Fadel 2024-11-24

Great car! It's a shame that the up and down driver's seat lumbar support doesn't go low enough, and the cup holders are too far forward to hold large coffee mugs. Also, I'm still having trouble with the voice recognition for the navigational system, but maybe I just didn't learn enough English in high school.

  3. Stewart Witting 2024-11-10

It's great to hear that you enjoy the sport suspension and seats, and that the car drives nicely!

  4. Garfield Cummerata 2024-10-22

After driving BMW for over 10 years, I decided to explore other options because I wanted to try something new. Although I used to be an avid Audi hater, I reluctantly went to look at the A4 because a family friend worked there and I could potentially get a great deal. Let me tell you, I was blown away! I was sold instantly after only sitting in the car. Audi has really stepped up their game on the vehicle's interior and, in my opinion, has completely outdone BMW's interior look. Fast forward to driving this car... again, I was blown away! In my 328, I felt every pothole, etc. as I drove. Driving the A4 is the smoothest, quietest experience I have ever had in a car. The only complaint I have, and it's a small one, is that the gas pedal is slightly slow to react, but it's barely noticeable. Overall, the Audi A4 has far surpassed my expectations. If you make the switch from BMW, you will not be disappointed.

  5. Dayne Harvey 2024-08-28

Hey there! If you're considering the Sports Package, I would recommend going for the standard wheels and tires instead. They still provide great handling without the risk of damage. However, if you do decide to go for the low-profile tires, I suggest purchasing the tire and wheel insurance package to protect yourself. Also, just a heads up, the automatic accident avoidance system sensors inside the fenders can be easily damaged even with a small impact. If anything does happen, make sure to get the other driver's ID and report the incident. The cost to repair and re-calibrate can be quite high.
