2009 Audi A4 problems
The Audi A4 is a line of luxury compact executive cars produced since 1994 by the German car manufacturer Audi, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. The A4 has been built in five generations and is based on the Volkswagen Group B platform. The first generation A4 succeeded the Audi 80. The automaker's internal numbering treats the A4 as a continuation of the Audi 80 lineage, with the initial A4 designated as the B5-series, followed by the B6, B7, B8, and the B9.
The B8 and B9 versions of the A4 are built on the Volkswagen Group MLB platform shared with several models and brands across the Volkswagen Group. The Audi A4 automobile layout consists of a front-engine design, with transaxle-type transmissions mounted at the rear of the engine. The cars are front-wheel drive, or on some models, "quattro" all-wheel drive. The A4 is available as a sedan and station wagon. Historically, the second (B6) and third generations (B7) of the A4 also included a convertible version. For the fourth generation (B8) and onwards, the convertible, along with a new coupé and 5-door liftback variant, was spun-off by Audi into a new nameplate called the Audi A5.
B5 (Typ 8D; 1994)
The first generation Audi A4 (known internally as the Typ 8D) debuted in October 1994, with production starting November 1994 and European sales commencing in January 1995 for the 1995 model year. North American sales later began in September 1995 for the 1996 model year. It was built on the Volkswagen Group B5 (PL45) platform, which it shared with the fourth generation Volkswagen Passat (B5, Typ 3B). It had a front-mounted longitudinal engine and front-wheel drive. Many variations of the A4 were also available with Audi's quattro four-wheel drive system. The A4 was initially introduced as a four-door saloon/sedan; the Avant (estate/wagon) was introduced in November 1995 and went on sale in February 1996.
Development began in 1988, with the first design sketches being created later that year. By 1991, an exterior design by Imre Hasanic was chosen and frozen for November 1994 production by 1992. The interior design was later finalized in 1992, with pilot production commencing in the first half of 1994. Development concluded in the third quarter of 1994, preceding November 1994 start of production.
A wide range of engines were available in European markets, between 1.6 and 2.8 litres for petrol engines; and a 1.9-litre diesel engine available with Volkswagen Group's VE technology, capable of achieving a 90 PS (66 kW; 89 bhp) or 110 PS (81 kW; 108 bhp). The 2.6 and 2.8-litre V6 engines which had been carried over from the old 80/90 proved popular, although in North America, the 2.8-litre engine was the only V6 that was available there until 1997. A 2.4-liter version was developed especially for the Thai market, where import duty jumped from 60 to 100 percent on cars of over 2,400 cc displacement.
The Audi A4 was the first model in the Volkswagen Group to feature the new 1.8-litre 20v engine with five valves per cylinder, based on the unit Audi Sport had developed for their Supertouring race car. A turbocharged 1.8T version produced 150 PS (110 kW; 148 bhp) and 210 N⋅m (155 lb⋅ft) torque. Moreover, a quattro GmbH special edition of the B5 1.8T was later available in Germany and Europe, for which the engine's power output was raised to 180 PS (132 kW; 178 bhp) and 235 N⋅m (173 lb⋅ft). Five-valve technology was also added to a reengineered V6 family of engines in 1997, starting with the 2.8-litre V6 30v, which now produced 193 PS (142 kW; 190 bhp), followed by a 2.4-litre V6 which was a downsize from the previous 2.6 litre, 150 hp (112 kW) engine, but with a power increase to 165 PS (121 kW; 163 bhp).
Audi also debuted their new tiptronic automatic transmission on the B5 platform, based on the unit Porsche developed for their 964-generation 911. The transmission is a conventional automatic gearbox with a torque converter offering the driver a fully-automatic operation or manual selection of the gear ratios.
The B5 marked Audi's continued move into the midsize luxury car segment, having started this trajectory notably with later model years of the preceding Audi 80/90 B4. Despite initial mechanical problems, overall build and assembly quality were lauded both by the automotive press and within Audi and Volkswagen, and at the time, parent company Volkswagen declared the B5 the company-wide build quality benchmark for all its other models.

Common 2009 Audi A4 problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Audi A4 2009, several common problems have been reported:
- Timing Chain Tensioner Failure: Another significant problem reported by Audi A4 2009 owners is timing chain tensioner failure. This issue mainly affected early models from 2009 to 2013. The poorly designed tensioners were prone to premature failure, impacting the engine's timing and potentially causing severe internal damage. For some Audi A4s with the 3.2-liter V6 engine, replacing the timing chain required extensive labor and cost due to the chain's location at the back of the engine.
- Engine Failure: While not as common as the previous issues, engine failure has been a notable problem with the 2009 Audi A4. This issue, rated with a severity of 10.0, can lead to catastrophic internal damage and requires costly repairs. Timing tensioner failure is often cited as a common cause of engine failure problems in the Audi A4, with reports of this issue arising as early as 50,000 miles depending on driving conditions.
These problems highlight some of the key issues faced by owners of the Audi A4 2009, emphasizing the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any warning signs to prevent costly repairs and ensure the longevity of the vehicle.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-19
- VIN: WAUVF78K29A
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: On Sunday December 19, 2021, while driving home the warning light for the battery/alternator flashed on with an associated beep warning. An estimated 30 miles later all electrical and motor functions died while I was in heavy traffic. I was able to pull off onto a narrow shoulder up a steep hill and park. All functions quit, I could not come out of "Park", the emergency brake switch would not release, the emergency flashers did not function. Nothing responded. I called AAA Towing service to be taken to an Audi service repair shop. The towing service had to use a jumper to provide electrical power to release the emergency brake and take the transmission out of "park." The repair service was the "Sport Hous Reno" where the alternator and the battery were replaced. Invoice # 4791, 12-21-2021, total $1,709.12. I do not expect the battery to be covered since it is expendable. However, the alternator malfunction and this model of Audi completely dying placed me in a dangerous situation where I or my family could have been seriously injured. This is not my first Audi, I did have a similar occurrence with another model and when the battery caused a malfunction the Audi computer went in "Limp Mode" and I was able to drive slowly to the dealership. This was not the case, when the electrical system failed it did not go into "Limp Mode," it completely "Died" placing me and my car in a dangerous position.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-06-11
- VIN: WAULF78K59N
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: I bought the car recently and drove it on the freeway, on the way back home I noticed a shaking/Vibration coming from the right side of the vehicle. It made the car very hard to control and staying in one lane was almost impossible. It swerves left to right uncontrollably at random times. I haven't taken it in to any dealership or manufacturer to check it out for me, also there's no warning lights on the dashboard at all. And I believe the owner I bought it from knew of this issue but didn't let me know so I'm really just as in the Blind as well. I don't know what else to do because I can't keep driving the car with uncontrollable force and putting kids in danger or anybody else's.

I SPOKE WITH MULTIPLE DEALERSHIPS INCLUDING THE DEALERSHIP I'M CURRENTLY DOING EVERY 10K MAINTENANCE WITH AND NONE HAVE ACTUALLY HELPED ME OUT SINCE I'M OUT OF WARRANTY OF 80K. I SPOKE WITH AUDI CORPORATE AND THEY SAY THEY WILL REVIEW WHEN THEY GET TO MY CASE WHICH IS PRETTY MUCH NEVER. THEY KEEP TELLING ME TO TAKE MY CAR IN TO DO PHASE 2 OIL CONSUMPTION WHICH IS GOING TO BE A SEVERAL GRAND REPAIR. I DID PHASE 1 OUT OF POCKET ROUGHLY 1,700 AND THEY FIXED PCV BREATHER VALVE, SEAL AND UPDATED SOFTWARE AFTER I REPLACED THE PCV BREATHER VALVE RECENTLY, BUT THEY SAID THE VALVE IS OLD, SO THEY REPLACED WITH NEWER ONE, BUT STILL PRETTY MUCH DOING THE SAME THING AND THAT'S CONSUMING OIL. AUDI CORPORATE SAY THEY WILL "REVIEW" MY CASE WHICH PRETTY MUCH MEANS I PAY OUT OF POCKET AND THEN THEY'LL SEE WHICH I DOUBT. THIS CAR IS LITERALLY A HEADACHE NEVER BUYING AN AUDI AGAIN. AUDI IS CROOKED AND THEY DO NOT WANT TO REPAIR EVEN THOUGH THEY KNOW ABOUT THESE PROBLEMS. I KNOW THEY'RE TRYING TO BAIT ME INTO REPAIRING THE CAR FURTHER WHICH WILL ULTIMATE LEAD TO A 10K ENGINE REPLACEMENT AND THAT'S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN NOT ON MY DIME.

DOING RESEARCH ON INTERNET I FOUND THIS WAS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM W/THIS CAR/YEAR AND THERE WAS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT & AUDI HAD TO PAY TO REPAIR FOR THIS OIL CONSUMPTION ISSUE FOR FREE BUT ONLY IF YOU PUT THE CLAIM IN BY A CERTAIN DATE.I DIDN'T KNOW OF THIS SO I COMPLAINED TO THE AUDI DEALER BUT IT WAS TOO LATE FOR MY CAR TO BE HONORED. THE DEALER THEN WOULD PERFORM A OIL CONSUMPTION TEST FOR $300 WITH A FEW NEW SEALS AND BOLTS.IF AFTER THE TEST IT STILL CONSUMED OIL RAPIDLY THEY ADVISED MAYBE AUDI CORP WOULD HONOR THE REPAIRS OR AT LEAST HELP COVER A PARTIAL AMOUNT SINCE I WAS A DEDICATED CUSTOMER GETTING ALL MY SERVICES DONE AT AUDI. AFTER TESTING IT FAILED & WAS DIAGNOSED THAT I NEEDED NEW PISTONS/TURBO ETC.TO FIX THIS. BASICALLY SOUNDED LIKE A NEW ENGINE.WENT TO AUDI CORP. & SUBMITTED THE COMPLAINT & ALL SHOWED ALL RECEIPTS OF SERVICES DONE TO THE CAR TO SEE IF THEY WOULD HELP HONOR THE REPAIR BUT END RESULTS THEY DIDN'T DO MUCH & WAS ADVISED BY DEALER IT WOULD COST ME $7000 TO FIX. I ENDED UP DECLINING SERVICE FROM THE AUDI DEALERSHIP & WENT TO A LOCAL AUDI MECHANIC SHOP TO AT LEAST PERFORM THE TURBO REPAIR & THAT COST ME NEAR $5K. THIS IS A LEMON OF A CAR & AUDI KNOWS IT! THERE SHOULD OF BEEN A RECALL FOR THIS FIX BUT INSTEAD LET THEIR CUSTOMERS SUFFER SPENDING LOADS OF MONEY ON REPAIRS.

You have a 2009 A4 2.0T FSI Quattro Prestige S-Line, which is an amazing and fun car to drive! The car has many pros, including its responsive performance, good handling, and ability to grip the road and make tight corners. It also has a smooth ride, even with sport suspensions. The interior is beautifully done, and the exterior styling is amazing with nice flowing lines. The LED lights are still impressive after 26K. Additionally, the car is reliable with no maintenance issues at all. The B&F audio is a must-have, and the car gets 31 mpg on the highway. There are a few cons, such as the stock tires being noisy at high speeds above 60 mph and torque steer issues that Audi has no fix for still. The MMI interface does not support other languages, and the car gets 18 mpg in the city. However, overall, it is a great car!

I recently traded in my 2002 A4 3.0 Quattro for a lease on a 2009 A4 2.0 Quattro. I am thrilled to say that this 2.0 has plenty of torque and I cannot even tell the difference between the new V4 and my prior V6, except for the fact that the gas mileage is better and the engine is quieter. I opted for the Premium Plus package with the navigator and I am absolutely in love with the voice-activated Bluetooth dialing, navigation, and the backup camera with guidance. Audi has truly outdone themselves with this one. I am getting over 33 miles per gallon on the highway and around 28 in the city/suburbs, which is fantastic. Overall, I am extremely happy with the vehicle. While I loved my 2002, this is a significant improvement. The only thing I miss from the 2002 is the storage compartments under the front seats.

Fun to drive in country roads, especially with S mode. The exterior with daylight running light draws attentions and the interior design, especially with the red back lights, is just beautiful. The fuel economy is good with over 33 mpg highway and 27 mixed highway/city driving.

The car is exactly what I was hoping for. The fit and finish are exceptional, with seams so tight that bike rack clips won't even fit between them. The engine runs smoothly, and after test driving the 2.0s, I decided that the 3.2 is the right choice for me. The brakes are also impressive, so be sure to keep an eye on the rear view mirror during sudden stops. While there are a few quirks, such as the poor iPod interface and the lights that won't turn off, I'm still very happy with my purchase. The homelink also requires the car to be turned on before it works, which can be a bit inconvenient, but overall, I'm very satisfied with my new car.

I have experienced excessive oil consumption with my A4 and have taken it back to the dealer four times. Despite the replacement of all pistons and rings, which took 30 days, the car still consumes about 1 quart of oil every 1500 miles. Additionally, I had to take it back for a power steering hose repair due to a recall. While the car looks great, it is not built to the highest standards. When I raised my concerns with Audi, they claimed that burning up to 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles is normal. However, I find this unacceptable, especially when compared to my 1997 Explorer with 185K miles, which did not consume oil at this rate.

The 2009 A4 car is not recommended for purchase due to extensive oil usage and potential engine failure. Despite attempts to address the issue with the Audi dealer, the problem was not resolved and the car ultimately failed its smog check. A class action lawsuit has been filed regarding this issue. It is important to consider these factors before making a decision to purchase this vehicle.

I purchased this car at 87k mileage and unfortunately experienced some issues shortly after. Despite only driving the car for 6 days in the first month, it required repairs and was burning a significant amount of high-priced oil every 300 miles. After consulting with the dealer, it was determined that the turbo needed to be replaced at a cost of $1800. Based on my experience, I would advise against purchasing this car.

Congratulations on your new 2009 Audi A4 quattro 4 dr sedan Premium plus! However, it seems like there might be a small issue with the car as the check engine light is blinking. Don't worry, this is a common issue that can be easily fixed by the dealer. It's always better to be safe than sorry and have it checked out. While Honda and Toyota are reliable cars, there's no denying the luxury and style that comes with owning an Audi. Enjoy your new ride!

I absolutely adore this car! The shape, the lines, the lights - everything about it is just perfect. Driving it is an absolute joy - it grips the road really well, is pretty quick for the price, and is insanely fun in the snow. I've never felt confident driving in the snow before, but the quattro system made me feel so safe. However, I have had a few issues with the engine. I've had it for just under a year and a half and have done about 20,000 miles due to my long commute. Unfortunately, I've had two big problems with the engine. The first problem was the seal to the spark plugs and piston area, which wasn't great. The car started misfiring pretty badly, and when I checked it out, I found oil puddles and oil covering the spark plugs. It was a $1,200 fix. Then, while driving, a check engine light popped up with the message 'Turbo Underboost'. The turbo had gone out, and at a Certified Audi dealership, it was a $3,300 fix. I've done quite a bit of research on this car, and while the 2.0 TFSI engine isn't the most reliable, I would still highly recommend it. However, if you're looking for an Audi that will last longer, I would recommend the 3.0 v-6 engine. It's much more reliable and a little quicker.
