The Audi A4 is a line of luxury compact executive cars produced since 1994 by the German car manufacturer Audi, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. The A4 has been built in five generations and is based on the Volkswagen Group B platform. The first generation A4 succeeded the Audi 80. The automaker's internal numbering treats the A4 as a continuation of the Audi 80 lineage, with the initial A4 designated as the B5-series, followed by the B6, B7, B8, and the B9.

For the fourth generation (B8) and onwards, the convertible, along with a new coupé and 5-door liftback variant, was spun-off by Audi into a new nameplate called the Audi A5.
B5 (Typ 8D; 1994)
The first generation Audi A4 (known internally as the Typ 8D) debuted in October 1994, with production starting November 1994 and European sales commencing in January 1995 for the 1995 model year. North American sales later began in September 1995 for the 1996 model year. It was built on the Volkswagen Group B5 (PL45) platform, which it shared with the fourth generation Volkswagen Passat (B5, Typ 3B). It had a front-mounted longitudinal engine and front-wheel drive. Many variations of the A4 were also available with Audi's quattro four-wheel drive system. The A4 was initially introduced as a four-door saloon/sedan; the Avant (estate/wagon) was introduced in November 1995 and went on sale in February 1996.
Development began in 1988, with the first design sketches being created later that year. By 1991, an exterior design by Imre Hasanic was chosen and frozen for November 1994 production by 1992. The interior design was later finalized in 1992, with pilot production commencing in the first half of 1994. Development concluded in the third quarter of 1994, preceding November 1994 start of production.
A wide range of engines were available in European markets, between 1.6 and 2.8 litres for petrol engines; and a 1.9-litre diesel engine available with Volkswagen Group's VE technology, capable of achieving a 90 PS (66 kW; 89 bhp) or 110 PS (81 kW; 108 bhp). The 2.6 and 2.8-litre V6 engines which had been carried over from the old 80/90 proved popular, although in North America, the 2.8-litre engine was the only V6 that was available there until 1997. A 2.4-liter version was developed especially for the Thai market, where import duty jumped from 60 to 100 percent on cars of over 2,400 cc displacement.
The Audi A4 was the first model in the Volkswagen Group to feature the new 1.8-litre 20v engine with five valves per cylinder, based on the unit Audi Sport had developed for their Supertouring race car. A turbocharged 1.8T version produced 150 PS (110 kW; 148 bhp) and 210 N⋅m (155 lb⋅ft) torque. Moreover, a quattro GmbH special edition of the B5 1.8T was later available in Germany and Europe, for which the engine's power output was raised to 180 PS (132 kW; 178 bhp) and 235 N⋅m (173 lb⋅ft). Five-valve technology was also added to a reengineered V6 family of engines in 1997, starting with the 2.8-litre V6 30v, which now produced 193 PS (142 kW; 190 bhp), followed by a 2.4-litre V6 which was a downsize from the previous 2.6 litre, 150 hp (112 kW) engine, but with a power increase to 165 PS (121 kW; 163 bhp).
Audi also debuted their new tiptronic automatic transmission on the B5 platform, based on the unit Porsche developed for their 964-generation 911. The transmission is a conventional automatic gearbox with a torque converter offering the driver a fully-automatic operation or manual selection of the gear ratios.
The B5 marked Audi's continued move into the midsize luxury car segment, having started this trajectory notably with later model years of the preceding Audi 80/90 B4. Despite initial mechanical problems, overall build and assembly quality were lauded both by the automotive press and within Audi and Volkswagen, and at the time, parent company Volkswagen declared the B5 the company-wide build quality benchmark for all its other models.

I bought my A4 new in July 2007 and I have never had an issue with it after 112k miles. Although it burns oil a bit, keeping a quart in the trunk is all you need to do. This car is fun to drive and built solid. The only issue I had was when the glove box hinge broke and they wanted hundreds to replace the whole thing. Instead, I went and bought a $2 hinge at Ace Hardware and screwed it in, and it works great. I hope to keep my A4 for many years to come!

*10 years of ownership* Hi there! After owning this car for almost 10 years, I wanted to share my experience with this 2007 Audi A4 Quattro with the 3.2 engine. I'm happy to say that from 0-80,000 miles, it was absolutely problem-free! During that time, all that was done to the vehicle was routine oil changes (I personally recommend 5,000-mile intervals instead of 10,000), tires around 45,000 miles, and I always use premium gasoline. From 80,000-115,000 miles, I had a few minor issues. Around 85,000 miles during service, it was discovered that my valve cover gaskets were leaking oil, which cost around $250 with parts and labor. At 95,000 miles, I had all brakes replaced (pads, rotors on all four wheels) and ordered parts from Advance Auto Parts for $210. They're still on the vehicle at 170,000 miles and are as smooth as the Audi brand, with very little brake dust as well. At 112,000 miles, I noticed that I could smell burning oil, so I took it in to see what was wrong. The valve cover gasket appeared to be leaking again, so I had it replaced once again. From 115,000-145,000 miles, there were no problems at all until 138,000 miles when I noticed little drops of oil on my garage floor. I decided to take it in and was informed that my valve cover gasket looked like it was leaking again and that my rear main seal had a leak. At that point, we figured that the actual valve cover itself may be warped. I decided to deal with the small drops of oil as I did not see it necessary to pay almost $3,000 to repair everything. I now have 170,000 miles on the car and it has never left me stranded. The key to keeping this car serviced is to find an independent mechanic that will treat you fairly. I bought this car with 51k miles on the odometer and have been enjoying driving it every single day. The unusually warm weather on the East Coast has allowed me to drop the top and enjoy motoring in this fine automobile. While the A4 Cabriolet may not be the fastest car out there, it is a fantastic cruiser. When you step on the accelerator trying to merge into traffic, you will not be disappointed. Keep your foot on the floor and the car will hit triple digits and keep on pulling. The fit and finish are fantastic. When sitting in the car, you easily forget that you are in a convertible. The ride noise is minimal (for a convertible) and the headliner looks like it belongs in a hardtop.

This is a fantastic car for city driving! It has plenty of power and is easy to handle. Living in Lake Mary, FL and dealing with a lot of out of town tourists, you have to be able to react to slow and fast drivers. Like most cities with interstate traffic, a quick and responsive vehicle is a must. The A4 with the 3.2L has the power to lane change and pass when needed. I also owned a 2012 S4 6MT and the less powered A4 is just as nimble, I didn't say as powerful, but this little package gets the job done with fun. There are some nice exterior modifications you can do to this car which really enhance the lovely design of the B7 series. I really enjoy this car and I think it's a great sedan for those who enjoy luxury and spirited driving. The only two things I dislike about the car are that I wish it had a 22-gallon gas tank and could be a little quieter. However, it really is a smooth riding vehicle and I enjoy it a great deal. I have owned BMWs, Chryslers, Corvettes, Porsches, and Volvos, and I must say that this Audi A4 is a superb automobile!

After driving my Audi for 1500 miles, I am completely sold! I am thrilled with the driving experience and the overall feel of the A4. It handles amazingly, has great gas mileage, and looks fantastic both inside and out. I test drove the 325xi and found that there wasn't much difference, but the A4's interior styling and price are superior. The only thing that takes a little getting used to are the interior controls, such as the climate controls, audio, lights, and sunroof control.

I've had a couple of smaller issues with my car. While the oil has been okay, it tends to use more as the car ages, about 1 quart every 4-5K at 110K. Additionally, I've had some trouble with the PCV console latch and poor leather trim, which has cracked twice. On the bright side, the tires last 50K or more and I get 30MPG or more. The brakes were replaced at 93k, but the original rear brakes are still going strong. The turbo diverter valve went at 93K, and the cruise control brake switch at 85K. The timing belt was replaced at 105K. All in all, it hasn't been too bad, as nothing mechanical went wrong until it had over 85k miles. The coil packs were replaced as part of a recall. It's a great daily driver with good economy, comfort, and style.

I really enjoy driving the Turbo, it's a great car. However, I have encountered a significant issue with it. It seems to burn oil, which is a problem that has been noted by other reviewers and can be found on various websites. Unfortunately, Audi has not taken any action to address this issue, and even considers it to be normal. I always keep a quart of oil in the trunk and a case in the garage just in case. I have had the consumption test done, but Audi considers it acceptable for the car to consume one quart of oil every 1,000-1,500 miles. Although not every Audi has this issue, it is a fairly common complaint that the service guys at both Audi dealerships I go to have acknowledged. It's disappointing that Audi is not doing more to keep loyal customers who have had negative experiences. I am personally disappointed and will not be purchasing an Audi again.

I replaced the timing belt at around 120k miles. After the replacement, the engine sounded more high pitched with a whining sound. Unfortunately, several thousand miles later, the oil symbol started flashing, and the engine was toast. The local garage where it was towed to initially thought it was the timing belt, but after taking it to the dealer, they confirmed that it was the oil pump. It seems that the A4 models have major engine problems, as Consumer Reports have stated. Unfortunately, I did not receive any satisfaction from the Audi dealer, and they only blamed me for driving it several blocks before pulling over.

Hello to all consumers experiencing oil consumption issues! I wanted to share my experience with my 07 A4, which I purchased used with 54,500 miles on it. Unfortunately, I noticed right away that there was an oil consumption problem. I kept track of the consumption for about 10,000 miles and made sure to inform the dealership of the mileage every time I had to add another quart. The oil light was coming on when I had less than 1000 miles left before needing to add another quart. Despite having to pay out of pocket, the dealership confirmed the issue and Audi Corp covered 85% of the repair costs. The remaining balance was covered by Elk Grove Audi, the dealership I purchased from. Audi replaced the piston rings and I am happy to report that my car has been running smoothly for close to 8000 miles since the replacement, only needing to add 1 quart at 5000 miles.
