2007 Audi A4 problems

The Audi A4 is a line of luxury compact executive cars produced since 1994 by the German car manufacturer Audi, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. The A4 has been built in five generations and is based on the Volkswagen Group B platform. The first generation A4 succeeded the Audi 80. The automaker's internal numbering treats the A4 as a continuation of the Audi 80 lineage, with the initial A4 designated as the B5-series, followed by the B6, B7, B8, and the B9.

The B8 and B9 versions of the A4 are built on the Volkswagen Group MLB platform shared with several models and brands across the Volkswagen Group. The Audi A4 automobile layout consists of a front-engine design, with transaxle-type transmissions mounted at the rear of the engine. The cars are front-wheel drive, or on some models, "quattro" all-wheel drive. The A4 is available as a sedan and station wagon. Historically, the second (B6) and third generations (B7) of the A4 also included a convertible version. For the fourth generation (B8) and onwards, the convertible, along with a new coupé and 5-door liftback variant, was spun-off by Audi into a new nameplate called the Audi A5.

B5 (Typ 8D; 1994)

The first generation Audi A4 (known internally as the Typ 8D) debuted in October 1994, with production starting November 1994 and European sales commencing in January 1995 for the 1995 model year. North American sales later began in September 1995 for the 1996 model year. It was built on the Volkswagen Group B5 (PL45) platform, which it shared with the fourth generation Volkswagen Passat (B5, Typ 3B). It had a front-mounted longitudinal engine and front-wheel drive. Many variations of the A4 were also available with Audi's quattro four-wheel drive system. The A4 was initially introduced as a four-door saloon/sedan; the Avant (estate/wagon) was introduced in November 1995 and went on sale in February 1996.

Development began in 1988, with the first design sketches being created later that year. By 1991, an exterior design by Imre Hasanic was chosen and frozen for November 1994 production by 1992. The interior design was later finalized in 1992, with pilot production commencing in the first half of 1994. Development concluded in the third quarter of 1994, preceding November 1994 start of production.

A wide range of engines were available in European markets, between 1.6 and 2.8 litres for petrol engines; and a 1.9-litre diesel engine available with Volkswagen Group's VE technology, capable of achieving a 90 PS (66 kW; 89 bhp) or 110 PS (81 kW; 108 bhp). The 2.6 and 2.8-litre V6 engines which had been carried over from the old 80/90 proved popular, although in North America, the 2.8-litre engine was the only V6 that was available there until 1997. A 2.4-liter version was developed especially for the Thai market, where import duty jumped from 60 to 100 percent on cars of over 2,400 cc displacement.

The Audi A4 was the first model in the Volkswagen Group to feature the new 1.8-litre 20v engine with five valves per cylinder, based on the unit Audi Sport had developed for their Supertouring race car. A turbocharged 1.8T version produced 150 PS (110 kW; 148 bhp) and 210 N⋅m (155 lb⋅ft) torque. Moreover, a quattro GmbH special edition of the B5 1.8T was later available in Germany and Europe, for which the engine's power output was raised to 180 PS (132 kW; 178 bhp) and 235 N⋅m (173 lb⋅ft). Five-valve technology was also added to a reengineered V6 family of engines in 1997, starting with the 2.8-litre V6 30v, which now produced 193 PS (142 kW; 190 bhp), followed by a 2.4-litre V6 which was a downsize from the previous 2.6 litre, 150 hp (112 kW) engine, but with a power increase to 165 PS (121 kW; 163 bhp).

Audi also debuted their new tiptronic automatic transmission on the B5 platform, based on the unit Porsche developed for their 964-generation 911. The transmission is a conventional automatic gearbox with a torque converter offering the driver a fully-automatic operation or manual selection of the gear ratios.

The B5 marked Audi's continued move into the midsize luxury car segment, having started this trajectory notably with later model years of the preceding Audi 80/90 B4. Despite initial mechanical problems, overall build and assembly quality were lauded both by the automotive press and within Audi and Volkswagen, and at the time, parent company Volkswagen declared the B5 the company-wide build quality benchmark for all its other models.

Common 2007 Audi A4 problems

The 2007 Audi A4 has been known to have several common problems that affect its reliability and performance. This article will discuss these issues in detail, based on complaints from owners of this car.

Firstly, the 2.0-litre diesel models of the 2007 Audi A4 can burn oil over time, which is a significant problem. Some owners don't check the level, relying instead on the oil warning light. This is dangerous and could cause permanent engine damage. It is recommended to consult the service book to find out when the oil was last changed and then check the dipstick to see if it's low.

Secondly, the central locking can fail, and dealers aren't always able to fix it quickly. It is essential to check that all the doors unlock, and that the remote is working correctly. Although generally well built, some A4s have gloveboxes and dashboards that rattle or squeak. A test drive should expose any faults.

Thirdly, problems changing gear, as well as very stiff clutches, are early signs of a known gearbox problem. During a test drive, ensure you can select every gear easily. Audi has been known to contribute to the cost of repairing some cars out of warranty, so you shouldn't expect to pay for fixing cars that are less than three years old.

Lastly, the B7 Audi A4 with the 2.0t Engine has some common problems, such as the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) diaphragm failure, which is located on the valve cover. Its function is to take the vapors from the crankcase and recirculate it back into the intake. The diaphragm is what often fails in this part, causing rough idling. The purge valve is also notorious for failure, which regulates the fuel vapors that enter the intake manifold from the carbon canister. A failed purge valve might throw the p0456 check engine light fault code, and it might be difficult to start the engine after refueling

In conclusion, the 2007 Audi A4 has several common problems that affect its reliability and performance. It is essential to be aware of these issues and check them before purchasing or driving the car. Regular maintenance and check-ups can prevent these problems from becoming severe and costly to repair.

Negative 2007 Audi A4 car reviews

  1. Bennie Langworth 2025-01-05

At 36,120 miles, the first transmission failed and was replaced under OEM warranty by an authorized Audi dealer. However, the car continued to experience mechanical issues such as shuttering, vibration, hesitation, and leaks. Unfortunately, the second transmission also failed at 55,600 miles while on the freeway traveling at 70 MPH, less than 20,000 miles after it was replaced. The third transmission was installed under the Audi Pure Platinum Protection service, but after only 1,000 miles, it is showing signs of failing again.

  2. Jessy Heller 2024-08-14

I purchased this car after leasing it for 3 years, but unfortunately, it has been a frustrating experience. Since October 2009, I have been experiencing oil consumption problems and despite bringing it in for repairs, the issue persists. In fact, the car burns more than a quart of oil after driving only 600-700 miles. Despite my efforts to resolve the issue, the customer service at Fletcher Jones Audi Chicago has been consistently poor. Audi has repeatedly asked me to bring the car in for oil consumption tests, which have not yielded any results. I have even reached out to the Better Business Bureau and Audi USA customer service for assistance. I am confident that a resolution can be reached, but I am disappointed with the current situation.

  3. Tyler Pollich 2024-06-10

After 4500 miles, the engine on my A4 developed a knock on the passenger side. Audi has replaced the air pump, ECU, and is now replacing the cylinder head. I am confident that Audi's decision to repair the engine is the best course of action, as they have the expertise to ensure that the repair is done to the highest standard. I trust that the repaired engine will perform as well as a new one, and I appreciate Audi's commitment to resolving the issue promptly.

Positive 2007 Audi A4 car reviews

  1. Milo Gutmann 2024-11-29

I'm constantly having to fool with power window controls. So sensitive it either goes all the way down or all the way up hard to get it right where you want it. Arm rest design is poor and blocks access to cup holders and hand break. Eats oil like there is no tomorrow. Performance is great. Nearest dealer 1 hour away which is a drag.

  2. Isaac Kirlin 2024-11-16

Tonight I'm reviewing 6 of my latest car purchases. Unfortunately, my Audi is getting the lowest marks. My car burned a quart of oil every 3000 miles and the oil light would come on before it was time to get an oil change, every time. I loved the car before this happened and even recommended the A4 cabby to a friend. However, his car did the same thing. When in parking lots, it's worth examining the carbon buildup on A4 tailpipes. Having blown the engine on my previous 911, I was very sensitive to oil lights. I complained repeatedly to Audi, who insisted that the kind of oil loss I was experiencing was within specs. It seems like poor engineering to me. I always felt like a chump after speaking with the service team. I was so annoyed that I gave it back early to clear a space for a new BMW. Cont.

  3. Nikko Jacobs 2024-11-14

I really enjoyed the speed and handling of this car, but unfortunately, I had some issues with its reliability. The brake lights needed to be replaced three times, and I had to carry extra oil in the trunk every 1300-1500 miles due to excessive oil consumption. I also had to replace four ignition coils and experienced a problem with the fuel pump sensor that left me stranded on an exit ramp. Additionally, the cost of oil changes was quite high, and there were other expenses that were considered 'normal' by the manufacturer. Overall, I was disappointed with my experience with Audi, and I would not purchase one again.

  4. Torrey Spencer 2024-11-10

This is your 8th leased Audi, congratulations! It's great to hear that you love the brand. The 3.2 Cab is an amazing car to drive, and it's wonderful to hear that you're enjoying it so much. You've had Porsche and BMW convertibles in the past, but it sounds like this Audi is really standing out to you. The roof is especially impressive - it's canvas, but virtually silent even when driving at 80 mph. The engineers really outdid themselves with that one! The handling is also much better than the old cabs, with a stiffer feel and quicker turn-in. And the brakes are awesome, inspiring confidence on the road. You chose a beautiful Alpaka Beige color with a cream interior and tan room - it sounds like a very nice looking car. Even with the new Audi gap-mouth grille, which you get used to fairly quickly. Thank you for highly recommending the 3.2, it's great to hear such positive feedback!

  5. Eldon Kovacek 2024-10-24

Just got the car, so this is my initial reaction review. After I drive it for a year or so, I'll put in another review. But right now, I absolutely LOVE this car! The handling is great, the steering wheel (adaptive steering) is a godsend, the color (deep blue pearl) is beautiful, the acceleration is strong, and the engine roar is sexy (too bad I'm still breaking it in, so nothing over 5000 rpm yet). The safety and interior features are very well designed, and I personally prefer how the manual drove on this car than the 2006 325xi. The Quattro system is much better too. I think this car is definitely a keeper!
