2013 Audi A4 problems

The Audi A4 is a line of luxury compact executive cars produced since 1994 by the German car manufacturer Audi, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. The A4 has been built in five generations and is based on the Volkswagen Group B platform. The first generation A4 succeeded the Audi 80. The automaker's internal numbering treats the A4 as a continuation of the Audi 80 lineage, with the initial A4 designated as the B5-series, followed by the B6, B7, B8, and the B9.

The B8 and B9 versions of the A4 are built on the Volkswagen Group MLB platform shared with several models and brands across the Volkswagen Group. The Audi A4 automobile layout consists of a front-engine design, with transaxle-type transmissions mounted at the rear of the engine. The cars are front-wheel drive, or on some models, "quattro" all-wheel drive. The A4 is available as a sedan and station wagon. Historically, the second (B6) and third generations (B7) of the A4 also included a convertible version. For the fourth generation (B8) and onwards, the convertible, along with a new coupé and 5-door liftback variant, was spun-off by Audi into a new nameplate called the Audi A5.

B5 (Typ 8D; 1994)

The first generation Audi A4 (known internally as the Typ 8D) debuted in October 1994, with production starting November 1994 and European sales commencing in January 1995 for the 1995 model year. North American sales later began in September 1995 for the 1996 model year. It was built on the Volkswagen Group B5 (PL45) platform, which it shared with the fourth generation Volkswagen Passat (B5, Typ 3B). It had a front-mounted longitudinal engine and front-wheel drive. Many variations of the A4 were also available with Audi's quattro four-wheel drive system. The A4 was initially introduced as a four-door saloon/sedan; the Avant (estate/wagon) was introduced in November 1995 and went on sale in February 1996.

Development began in 1988, with the first design sketches being created later that year. By 1991, an exterior design by Imre Hasanic was chosen and frozen for November 1994 production by 1992. The interior design was later finalized in 1992, with pilot production commencing in the first half of 1994. Development concluded in the third quarter of 1994, preceding November 1994 start of production.

A wide range of engines were available in European markets, between 1.6 and 2.8 litres for petrol engines; and a 1.9-litre diesel engine available with Volkswagen Group's VE technology, capable of achieving a 90 PS (66 kW; 89 bhp) or 110 PS (81 kW; 108 bhp). The 2.6 and 2.8-litre V6 engines which had been carried over from the old 80/90 proved popular, although in North America, the 2.8-litre engine was the only V6 that was available there until 1997. A 2.4-liter version was developed especially for the Thai market, where import duty jumped from 60 to 100 percent on cars of over 2,400 cc displacement.

The Audi A4 was the first model in the Volkswagen Group to feature the new 1.8-litre 20v engine with five valves per cylinder, based on the unit Audi Sport had developed for their Supertouring race car. A turbocharged 1.8T version produced 150 PS (110 kW; 148 bhp) and 210 N⋅m (155 lb⋅ft) torque. Moreover, a quattro GmbH special edition of the B5 1.8T was later available in Germany and Europe, for which the engine's power output was raised to 180 PS (132 kW; 178 bhp) and 235 N⋅m (173 lb⋅ft). Five-valve technology was also added to a reengineered V6 family of engines in 1997, starting with the 2.8-litre V6 30v, which now produced 193 PS (142 kW; 190 bhp), followed by a 2.4-litre V6 which was a downsize from the previous 2.6 litre, 150 hp (112 kW) engine, but with a power increase to 165 PS (121 kW; 163 bhp).

Audi also debuted their new tiptronic automatic transmission on the B5 platform, based on the unit Porsche developed for their 964-generation 911. The transmission is a conventional automatic gearbox with a torque converter offering the driver a fully-automatic operation or manual selection of the gear ratios.

The B5 marked Audi's continued move into the midsize luxury car segment, having started this trajectory notably with later model years of the preceding Audi 80/90 B4. Despite initial mechanical problems, overall build and assembly quality were lauded both by the automotive press and within Audi and Volkswagen, and at the time, parent company Volkswagen declared the B5 the company-wide build quality benchmark for all its other models.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-24
  • VIN: WAUFFAFL2DN
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: My Audi A4 failed to start on the coldest day of the year when my daughter was out doing errands and left it for an extended time parked outside. When she returned and tried to start the car, she got an error message: "Steering defective! Do not drive vehicle!" She re-tried over a dozen times, leaving the vehicle and returning to try again....to no avail. It was extremely cold so she retreated into the building and searched the internet and found others who had had this same problem. She finally called a friend who came to pick her up and take her home. I called Audi, and they confirmed that it's a know problem that occurs in extreme cold and there's no way to get it started until things warm up. We waited until later in the day before my son and I drove over and successfully got the car started. Luckily my daughter could get warm refuge in a nearby building. But it is easy to imagine other circumstances, say, someone who lives in the country who stops at the side of the road for whatever reason and might freeze because the car won't start. Although Audi has known about the problem, they have chosen not to issue a recall but instead an extended warranty that had expired a month or so before this incident. Surprisingly, they refuse to fix the problem because it is beyond that extension date even though we brought the car to the dealer and they confirmed the error was recorded 18 times which might match my daughter's desperate but failed attempts to start the car. This is not an optional fix. It is a danger that should be addressed by recall. This is the first time we had this problem or even knew to be concerned. Furthermore, the notice for extended warranty (see attached) was not even addressed to me but, instead, to my teenage son who clearly didn't understand how important it was to get it fixed.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-12
  • VIN: WAUFFAFL7DN
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I purchased this vehicle on 10/16/2022 and the very next day took it back and informed them that it was leaking oil. It was repaired and from that point on it was telling me to add a quart of oil once every week. Was diagnosed by the Audi dealership of the pistons needing to be replaced and that my car fell under the lawsuit that has yet to be settled. Was told I could spend the 9k to fix the car and be reimbursed. Audi really needs to be fixing all vehicles with these issues. That is just insane to pay 9k to fix a vehicle when I just got it and have barely been able to drive it.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-23
  • VIN: WAUFFAFL2DN
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I have a 2013 Audi A4 2.0. I was driving home at night close to my home and the car started puttering and wouldn’t go and I found out that the timing chain had “jumped” and caused sudden engine failure. I later found out that same issue is the subject of class action lawsuits for the second time around because Audi didn’t properly take action after the first suit and repair the issue, which is apparently a major problem with my model and other class vehicles and instead continue to let people unknowingly buy and drive these cars.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-08-24
  • VIN: wauffafl7dn
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: August of 2021. It was raining out and I drove through a puddle and my electric steering shut down. This has been a known defect for at least 10 years with Audi and NHTSA has done NOTHING about it.

STEERING,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-08-20
  • VIN: WAUDFAFLXDA
  • Components: STEERING,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: 2013 Audi A4 with a 2.0 turbo engine approximately 62.5K miles and up to date with all services. I was driving on the highway at highway speeds when the engine suddenly started to misfire with a partial loss of power making the car difficult to steer. At that time the check engine light was not illuminated. I was able to get off the highway and drive home about 2 miles away from when the misfires first occurred. The police did not get involved as I was able to return home. The following week the car was towed to my mechanic where it was diagnosed that cylinder 3 had a problem. At that time the check engine light illuminated. He recommended that I tow my car to the Audi dealership as they have better availability of parts. The dealer took apart the engine and diagnosed a broken piston ring which destroyed many other parts of the engine. The engine had to be replaced with a new one from the factory. Audi should be held accountable for catastrophic engine failures that may result in injury to others due to poor engine design.

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-26
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: WAUBFAFL7DA
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: Two of my four kids were in the rear seat. My 7 year old panicked because her seatbelt came unbuckled and she couldn’t get it back. My initial reaction was to hit the breaks and slow down. My daughter was ejected from her seat into the passenger seat head first and then landed on the floor with her booster seat on top of her. I pulled over and checked the seat belt and it would not latch. I had to drive her home unrestrained!! A few days later, different child experienced a similar situation with the middle seat. This is a concern because if the seatbelts failed during a car accident, my children’s lives were at risk. Repeated risk of the lives of children by ignoring this common issue. How many lives will it take to be protected? Minus the fear of being unable to afford repairs, or to get the vehicle in to the repair shop? As this has happened to 2/5 buckles in a matter of days, how do I know all of the buckles are not defective? Why are we repeatedly waiting for the tally marks on lives lost before we protect our children? When is it worth a single life EVEN HARMED because the life saving device has failed to keep us safe? Our family is so strict about seatbelt safety, how can this even be a gamble that anyone is willing to take? Furthermore, how do I explain to my children that this “very important” seatbelt that I check every time they kids get into a vehicle.. how am I supposed to explain that this very important piece of equipment may or may not be there when you need it and they still must wear it?I have read hundreds of forums reporting the same failures in both Audi and VW. I have contacted Audi Denver and am waiting on a quote. I am a nurse and my husband is unemployed due to the economy downturn. We are financially stretched to our absolute limits, raising children and we will not have the means to fix the failed seat belt buckles. Any safety failure like this or with airbags should be 100% under manufacturers warranty for the LIFE of the vehicle.
2021-07-08

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-18
  • VIN: WAUHFAFL1DN
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Coolent migration from the coolant valve through the wire into the connection to ecu. This caused corrosion which in turn caused an unsafe driving condition by shutting the throttle pedal control to the engine off. This has been recalled on many other models and is quite prevalent in the a4 with manual transmission as mine is.
2021-07-06

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

Negative 2013 Audi A4 car reviews

  1. Soledad Sanford 2024-09-07

Hello! Thank you for considering the 2013 Audi A4. While this car has some great features, I wanted to let you know that there have been some changes to the steering that may not be to everyone's liking. Some drivers have reported that the steering feels a bit loose and numb, especially at higher speeds. Additionally, the 2.0 turbo engine can be a bit noisy at low speeds and may not provide the acceleration you're looking for. The mileage may also be a bit lower than expected, averaging around 20 miles per gallon. If you're looking for an alternative, you might want to consider the Volkswagen Jetta. Thanks again for your interest in the Audi A4!

We leased two of them. Although we loved our first one (a 2010), it had an oil problem and the rearview mirror kept falling off. Unfortunately, the second one was a nightmare. The car shipped with a torn front seat and didn't have the 60/40 folding rear seats that we were used to. The guy who handled our order made a mistake, but by the time we realized it, it was too late. Additionally, the fuel economy for each car was not great. We had to pay over $60 every two weeks for hi-grade petrol, which was significantly more expensive than our 2015 328xi. The ergonomics were also a mess, and the backseat was quite small. It's important to note that these issues may not be a problem for everyone, so it's important to do your research before making a purchase.

The 2009-2012 2.0 engines have a known issue with piston rings that can cause excessive oil consumption. I personally experienced this problem, having to add 1 quart of oil every 600 miles!

  4. Wilhelm Kulas 2024-03-18

My 2013 Audi A4 2.0T burns about 1 quart of oil every 2000 miles. As an expert in the field, I can confirm that this is a known issue with older A4 models, despite what the dealer may have claimed. It is important to address this issue promptly to ensure the longevity and performance of your vehicle.

Positive 2013 Audi A4 car reviews

  1. Joshua Sipes 2025-01-04

I really like this car! It looks great both inside and out, and the build quality is exceptional. The handling is tight, yet it still manages to strike a balance between comfort and size. Personally, I find the engine more than capable for fun driving, especially when combined with the sport suspension that I also have. However, if you're after raw horsepower, you may want to consider something other than the A4 at this price point. While there's a little more understeer in aggressive turns than in the previous A4, it's still manageable. The only major disappointment for me was the Bang & Olufsen sound system upgrade. As an audiophile, I was surprised by the thin sound it produces. In retrospect, I would have gone for the stock system and found a way to upgrade with a third party if the budget allowed.

  2. Federico Senger 2024-11-19

This will be my 5th A4 in either a sedan or wagon version. The car looks great inside and out, and the improved HP over the years has added to the thrill of driving. However, the new electronic steering has been a negative. If you are looking for a soft feel to lumber off to the grocery store, the steering is fine. But if you push it a bit or take a long highway trek, you will notice the floaty feel. Overall, the car is fine, but if you're searching for a tight steering/handling feel, you may want to give the car a good test drive before you purchase. After this lease is up, I will definitely look at a tighter car like the BMW.

  3. Ahmad Bayer 2024-11-11

Hilarious! Did you know that an engine consuming 1 quart per 1000 miles is actually within the industry standard recognized oil consumption limit, even for brand new cars straight off the lot? However, anything over that MAY be the symptom of a problem. Since this is a turbo vehicle, there is an even higher likelihood of oil consumption, EVEN IF everything is mechanically perfect. It's apparent that a vast majority of the population does not understand the internal workings of an internal combustion engine.

  4. Jerry Welch 2024-10-13

Congratulations on your upgrade to the 2013 A4! The 8-speed automatic transmission provides smoother acceleration and better mileage, averaging over 25mpg in mixed driving. It's great to hear that some of the annoying bugs in the 'Infotainment' system have been fixed. While it's disappointing to see the folding rear seats move to the premium plus package, the A4 still offers good value for the class. The new brown interior could have been better, but overall, the A4 works better for you than the 3-series. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

    Runs really nice and smooth.
