1999 Audi A4 problems
The Audi A4 is a line of luxury compact executive cars produced since 1994 by the German car manufacturer Audi, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. The A4 has been built in five generations and is based on the Volkswagen Group B platform. The first generation A4 succeeded the Audi 80. The automaker's internal numbering treats the A4 as a continuation of the Audi 80 lineage, with the initial A4 designated as the B5-series, followed by the B6, B7, B8, and the B9.
The B8 and B9 versions of the A4 are built on the Volkswagen Group MLB platform shared with several models and brands across the Volkswagen Group. The Audi A4 automobile layout consists of a front-engine design, with transaxle-type transmissions mounted at the rear of the engine. The cars are front-wheel drive, or on some models, "quattro" all-wheel drive. The A4 is available as a sedan and station wagon. Historically, the second (B6) and third generations (B7) of the A4 also included a convertible version. For the fourth generation (B8) and onwards, the convertible, along with a new coupé and 5-door liftback variant, was spun-off by Audi into a new nameplate called the Audi A5.
B5 (Typ 8D; 1994)
The first generation Audi A4 (known internally as the Typ 8D) debuted in October 1994, with production starting November 1994 and European sales commencing in January 1995 for the 1995 model year. North American sales later began in September 1995 for the 1996 model year. It was built on the Volkswagen Group B5 (PL45) platform, which it shared with the fourth generation Volkswagen Passat (B5, Typ 3B). It had a front-mounted longitudinal engine and front-wheel drive. Many variations of the A4 were also available with Audi's quattro four-wheel drive system. The A4 was initially introduced as a four-door saloon/sedan; the Avant (estate/wagon) was introduced in November 1995 and went on sale in February 1996.
Development began in 1988, with the first design sketches being created later that year. By 1991, an exterior design by Imre Hasanic was chosen and frozen for November 1994 production by 1992. The interior design was later finalized in 1992, with pilot production commencing in the first half of 1994. Development concluded in the third quarter of 1994, preceding November 1994 start of production.
A wide range of engines were available in European markets, between 1.6 and 2.8 litres for petrol engines; and a 1.9-litre diesel engine available with Volkswagen Group's VE technology, capable of achieving a 90 PS (66 kW; 89 bhp) or 110 PS (81 kW; 108 bhp). The 2.6 and 2.8-litre V6 engines which had been carried over from the old 80/90 proved popular, although in North America, the 2.8-litre engine was the only V6 that was available there until 1997. A 2.4-liter version was developed especially for the Thai market, where import duty jumped from 60 to 100 percent on cars of over 2,400 cc displacement.
The Audi A4 was the first model in the Volkswagen Group to feature the new 1.8-litre 20v engine with five valves per cylinder, based on the unit Audi Sport had developed for their Supertouring race car. A turbocharged 1.8T version produced 150 PS (110 kW; 148 bhp) and 210 N⋅m (155 lb⋅ft) torque. Moreover, a quattro GmbH special edition of the B5 1.8T was later available in Germany and Europe, for which the engine's power output was raised to 180 PS (132 kW; 178 bhp) and 235 N⋅m (173 lb⋅ft). Five-valve technology was also added to a reengineered V6 family of engines in 1997, starting with the 2.8-litre V6 30v, which now produced 193 PS (142 kW; 190 bhp), followed by a 2.4-litre V6 which was a downsize from the previous 2.6 litre, 150 hp (112 kW) engine, but with a power increase to 165 PS (121 kW; 163 bhp).
Audi also debuted their new tiptronic automatic transmission on the B5 platform, based on the unit Porsche developed for their 964-generation 911. The transmission is a conventional automatic gearbox with a torque converter offering the driver a fully-automatic operation or manual selection of the gear ratios.
The B5 marked Audi's continued move into the midsize luxury car segment, having started this trajectory notably with later model years of the preceding Audi 80/90 B4. Despite initial mechanical problems, overall build and assembly quality were lauded both by the automotive press and within Audi and Volkswagen, and at the time, parent company Volkswagen declared the B5 the company-wide build quality benchmark for all its other models.

TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-05-16
- VIN: WAUCB28D2XA
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: TREAD SEPARATION. I WAS DRIVING WESTBOUND ON I-580, APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH, WHEN THE TREAD ON MY RIGHT FRONT TIRE SEPARATED AND THE TIRE BLEW. I WAS LUCKY TO BE ABLE TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF OTHER AWARE DRIVERS ON THE HIGHWAY WHO ALLOWED ME TO CHANGE LANES AT A REDUCED SPEED. THE TIRE TREAD DAMAGED THE RIGHT FRONT AREA OF MY CAR, CAUSING APPROXIMATELY $4,000 IN DAMAGES, OF WHICH APPROXIMATELY $3,000 WAS COVERED BY MY INSURANCE COMPANY. THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE IS SAFETY, NOT MONEY. I COULD HAVE BEEN SEVERELY INJURED OR KILLED AS A RESULT OF THE TIRE FAILURE. THE TIRE HAD A BIG O TIRES BRAND LABEL BUT IT WAS MANUFACTURED BY COOPER. BEFORE THE INCIDENT, THERE WAS NO ABNORMAL USAGE OR WEAR ON THE TIRE, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF ACCELERATED WEAR AT THE PLACE WHERE THE TREAD SEPARATION INITIATED, WHICH WAS CAUSED BY THE SEPARATION. COOPER MIGHT BE THE ONLY TIRE MANUFACTURER THAT DOES NOT USE A BELT WEDGE. THEIR HISTORY OF TREAD SEPARATIONS AND TIRE FAILURES, AND TOTAL DISREGARD FOR THE SAFETY OF THEIR AMERICAN CUSTOMERS SHOULD BE SUFFICIENT TO REMOVE THEIR PRIVILEGE OF DOING BUSINESS IN THE U.S. *TR

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-06-10
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM
- Summary: MY BRAKE LIGHT STARTED BEEPING AND FLASHING ONE DAY WHILE DRIVING. THE BEEPING AND FLASHING CONTINUED THROUGH THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS. I TOOK MY CAR TO MY MECHANIC AND HE SAID I WOULD HAVE TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALER BECAUSE AUDI WON'T RELEASE THEIR SERVICE CODES. I CALLED THE DEALER AND ASKED WHAT WAS GOING ON. THE MECHANIC ASKED ME "WERE YOU DRIVING YOUR CAR IN THE RAIN?" I HAD QUITE A FEW SARCASTIC RESPONSES TO THE STUPID QUESTION BUT I JUST SAID, YEAH. I ASSUME A CAR IS ENGINEERED TO BE DRIVEN IN ALL CLIMATES INCLUDING, RAIN. A PRODUCT SHOULD BE DESIGNED TO PERFORM ITS INTENDED USE. NOT THE A4. WHO NEEDS AN ALL WHEEL DRIVE CAR IF THEY DON'T PLAN ON DRIVING IT THROUGH RAIN AND SNOW? THE MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT MY ABS CONTROL MODULE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AND IT WOULD COST ME $1500. HE TOLD ME THAT MY ABS AND ALL WHEEL DRIVE WOULD NOT WORK PROPERLY UNTIL I FIX IT. I LIVE IN COLORADO AND I FREQUENTLY DRIVE THROUGH THE SNOW. I DRIVE THROUGH THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS IN ICY AND DANGEROUS CONDITIONS. LUCKILY, IT WAS SUMMER TIME WHEN MY MODULE WENT OUT. I TAKE MY LITTLE SISTERS, LITTLE BROTHERS, AND NEPHEWS SNOWBOARDING. I COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED OR I COULD HAVE SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED SOMEONE ELSE BECAUSE I WAS DRIVING A VEHICLE THAT I THOUGHT HAD ABS, BUT DIDN'T. THERE IS A SLIM MARGIN FOR ERROR WHEN YOU ARE DRIVING ON SNOWY CURVES THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS. I COULD BE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE CLIFF BY THE TIME I REALIZE MY ABS WASN'T WORKING. OR I COULD SLIDE OVER A GROUP OF PEDESTRIANS. EVEN IF AUDI DOESN'T WANT TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS, THEY SHOULD AT LEAST NOTIFY THEIR OWNERS THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM THAT DRIVERS SHOULD BE AWARE OF. I WENT ONLINE AND I WAS NOT SURPRISED TO SEE THAT THOUSANDS OF OTHER PEOPLE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. AUDI DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING EXCEPT OFFER TO REPAIR THE BROKEN MODULE FOR FULL PRICE. *TR

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-10-17
- VIN: WAUCB28D5XA
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC
- Summary: THE ABS MODULE ON MY VEHICLE HAS FAILED. THIS PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE QUITE PREVALENT AMONGST AUDI AND VW VEHICLES. AN ABS FAILURE COULD CAUSE ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS. THIS MODULE SHOULD BE RECALLED. THE PROBLEM BEGINS WITH THREE BEEPS, A SOLID YELLOW ABS LIGHT AND A FLASHING RED BRAKE LIGHT. THE WARNING MAY COME ON MOMENTARILY WHILE I AM DRIVING AND GO AWAY, BUT IN MOST CASES WILL BECOME MORE PREVALENT AS TIME GOES ON. SOMETIMES THE ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT REMAIN ON. OCCASIONALLY THE ABS ACTIVATED (IN OTHER WORDS ABS BRAKING HAS ACTIVATED) WHILE THE CAR IS IN MOTION. FROM RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM, IT SEEMS TO BE COMMON WITH AUDI A4 AND VW PASSAT B5 MODELS. THE ABS WARNING LIGHT WILL COME ON EACH TIME THE VEHICLE IS OPERATED. THE SUDDEN ABS ACTIVATION WILL OCCUR RARELY. THE CONSEQUENCES OF SUDDEN ABS ACTIVATION IS OBVIOUS; BRAKING WHEN NOT EXPECTING IT CAN CAUSE TRAGIC RESULTS. LOSING THE ABS FUNCTIONALITY WHILE DRIVING AND WHEN IT IS NEEDED CAN ALSO CAUSE TRAGIC RESULTS. I TOOK MY CAR INTO THE SHOP. A VAG WAS HOOKED UP AND THE FOLLOWING CODE APPEARED: "01203 - ELECTRICAL CONNECTION BETWEEN ABS AND INSTRUMENT CLUSTER" REPLACING THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTION BETWEEN THE ABS AND INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WILL NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. THE ONLY RESOLUTION FOR THIS ISSUE IS TO BUY A NEW ABS UNIT, BUY A USED ABS UNIT, OR HAVE THE CURRENT CONTROL MODULE REBUILT. AGAIN, SYSTEMATIC AND WIDESPREAD FAILURES OF THE ABS CONTROL MODULE ARE OCCURRING. NUMEROUS OWNERS HAVE FILED COMPLAINTS WITH REGARD TO THIS ISSUE. PLEASE LOOK INTO THE ISSUE AND CONSIDER RECALLING THE MODULE BEFORE IT TRAGIC RESULTS DO OCCUR. *TR

- Summary: 1999 AUDI A4 2.8. THIRD TIME THE CAR NEEDS TO REPLACE LEAKING CAM SEALS ON ENGINE. ALL CAM SEAL REPAIRS COMPLETED BY ORIGINAL DEALER REPAIR DEPT. FIRST REPAIR WAS ONLY AT 39,000 MILES AND 6 MONTHS OFF OF WARRANTY, IN NOVEMBER 2003. 2ND REPAIR WAS ONLY TWO YEARS AND 30,000 MILES LATER, AT 69,000 MILES, IN FEBRUARY 2005. 3RD REPAIR NOW NEEDED, ONLY AFTER 35,000 MILES LATER, AT 105,000 MILES. I HAVE READ THAT THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THE A4 MODEL MANUFACTURED OVER THE COURSE OF SEVERAL YEARS, INCLUDING 1999, AND THAT THE CAM SEALS SHOULD LAST MUCH LONGER THAN 35,000 MILES. AUDI CORPORATE REFUSED TO ASSIST WITH EXPENSES WITH THE 2ND REPAIR. I AM IN DISCUSSIONS WITH AUDI CORPORATE ABOUT THE EXPENSES FOR THE 3RD REPAIR. SINCE THIS IS A PERSISTENT PROBLEM WITH MY VEHICLE, AND AS I'VE READ, MANY OTHER 1999 A4S, I ENCOURAGE THE NHTSA TO RESEARCH THIS CAM SEAL ENGINE DEFECT, AND ISSUE A DEFECT RECALL. I HAD SUBMITTED THE SAME REQUEST SEVERAL YEARS AGO, WHEN THE FIRST INCIDENT OCCURRED. THANK YOU. KAREN BLUMENFELD *TR

1999 Audi A4 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 7 recalls for different components of the 1999 Audi A4.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (VW) is recalling certain 2000-2001 TT Roadster, 2000 TT Coupe, 1999 Audi A8, 1998-2000 Audi A6, and 1999-2000 Audi A4 vehicles equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) that do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, possibly causing the air bag to deploy improperly in the event of a crash.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my car. I've had it for about a year now and it's been great! I've only had to replace the timing belt and some other parts that are normal wear and tear. I do most of the work myself, which is really satisfying. The Quattro system is amazing and the turbo is really strong (just remember to check your oil every time you fill up). This German car is built to last and with 160 HP, I can keep up with cars that have 20 or 30 more HP than me. However, I would recommend the A4 to people who know about cars. I love my car so much that I don't think I want to sell it!

Excellent car! Although it may feel a bit small, especially in the back seat, it's perfect for driving and gives a great sense of security and control. In fact, I couldn't beat it on snow and ice (and I came out of a SAAB, which I thought was good before getting into the AUDI). The dealership was also very good, including their service.

I test-drove the 328, and all things considered, the Audi is a better value for the money. It will run rings around the Bimmer in bad weather. There are a lot of neat features to learn about once you buy one. However, the back seats are somewhat cramped. I'm 6'1

I really like this car! The turbo engine (w/ performance chip 200hp 235lbs/ft torque) is amazing and the handling is superb both wet and dry. In fact, in the snow (under 3-4

The quattro is excellent in all weather and the 2.8 engine is a must. It's a great looking car that your friends will think costs much more than it does. While the interior space is a little limited in the rear and the cup holders are not the greatest, the climate controls could be placed more conveniently.

The car can be quite expensive to maintain, so it's important to keep up with regular maintenance. If you're familiar with working on this type of car, it could be a good option for you. It has a solid and safe driving experience, especially in AWD on snowy roads. However, it's important to note that it has low clearance and may struggle in heavy snow. Many Audis from this time period have had issues with the cluster panel and airbag light, as well as expensive sensors. If you're willing to invest in regular maintenance, it could be a good purchase. However, if not, be prepared for potentially costly repairs. At 110K miles, the engine and transmission mounts may need to be replaced, which can cause shaking in the rear axle. Additionally, the front end has many parts that may need to be replaced. Overall, it's important to carefully consider whether this car is the right choice for you.

I really enjoy driving this car. The body style still looks great even though it's six years old. The handling, power, and quality of the interior design are all great features. However, the lack of mechanical reliability is a major downside. Unfortunately, I've had to spend over $6,000 on repairs since purchasing this car just over 3 years ago. These repairs include new oxygen sensors, water pump/timing belt, ABS control module, brake rotors, and more. I've decided to sell this car soon.

This car has several issues that need to be addressed. The clutch, back axles, wiring for blinker, CD player, tape player, cigarette lighter, rear window, display screen, bumper, and key fob all require attention. However, with proper maintenance and repairs, this car has the potential to be a reliable and enjoyable vehicle.

Hey there! So I actually bought the car with 155000 miles on it, call me crazy but I did! Luckily, knock on wood, nothing major has happened yet. Although, I did want to change my transmission fluid and it's been a bit of a challenge because Audi has once again made it difficult. But, looking past that, it's been really fun to drive and everything still works great! The only issue is that the triptronic sensor is bad, but it still shifts fine in 'd'. This car really rewards good driving, so if you take it easy, it'll definitely outlast you!

I purchased this car brand new from the dealership in 1999 and consistently maintained it with regular oil changes through the dealership. However, last month, the oil pressure light illuminated and upon inspection, it was discovered that the engine had developed a significant sludge problem. The cost to repair this issue was $5,000. It is important to note that regular oil changes with synthetic oil could have prevented this issue. As a result, I am disappointed with Audi's lack of suggestion to switch to synthetic oil and increase the frequency of oil changes.
