Ford Crown victoria problems

The Ford Crown Victoria ("Crown Vic") is a full-size sedan that was marketed and manufactured by Ford. The successor to the Ford LTD Crown Victoria, two generations of the model line were produced from the 1992 until the 2012 model years. The Ford counterpart of the Mercury Grand Marquis, the Crown Victoria was the largest sedan marketed by Ford in North America, slotted above the Ford Taurus. The Crown Victoria Police Interceptor (1992–2011) was marketed specifically for law-enforcement use; a long-wheelbase Crown Victoria sedan (2002–2011) was marketed primarily for taxi cab fleets.
The Crown Victoria was produced on the rear-wheel drive, body-on-frame Ford Panther platform, sharing its chassis with the Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car. From 1997 until their 2011 discontinuation, the three model lines were the sole four-door sedans produced in North America with a full-length frame, rear-wheel drive, and a standard V8 engine. While the front and rear crumple zones were engineered into the vehicle, it was one of Ford's products that were not of unibody construction for the entire generation. The Crown Victoria was the last car made using the Ford Panther platform.
For its entire production, the Crown Victoria was produced by Ford Canada alongside the Grand Marquis at St. Thomas Assembly in Southwold, Ontario. From 1991 until 2011, over 1.5 million cars (including Police Interceptors) were produced by St. Thomas Assembly prior to its closure. A 2012 Crown Victoria (intended for Middle East export) was the final vehicle produced by the facility. Following the discontinuation of the model line, the Crown Victoria was not directly replaced, with the full-size Ford Taurus serving as the next basis for Ford police cars.

Common Ford Crown victoria problems
The Ford Crown Victoria, a popular daily driver and fleet vehicle, is known for its reliability and durability. However, like any vehicle, it can experience certain problems. Here are some of the most common issues reported by owners of the 2nd generation Ford Crown Victoria (1998-2012).
- Loose Spark Plugs: The spark plugs in the Ford Crown Victoria tend to pop out of the engine, causing a loud drilling noise from the engine, rough idle, steering wheel shaking, and acceleration problems. This issue can be caused by debris from fuel and heat during combustion collecting on the spark plug’s threads, which eventually loosens the plug. Fixing loose spark plugs requires honing out the threads in the cylinder, re-tapping the engine cylinder, installing a threaded insert, reinstalling the spark plug, and torqueing it to manufacturers’ specifications.
- Intake Manifold Leaks: Intake manifold leaks can cause ticking noises when the engine is cold and the smell of exhaust fumes. These leaks can be caused by a bad intake manifold gasket or cracked intake manifold. To fix this issue, inspect the intake manifold for cracks, replace the intake manifold gasket, or replace the intake manifold if necessary.
- Lighting Control Module Failure: The lighting control module can fail, causing headlights to turn off while driving. This issue is common in the 2003 Crown Victoria and can be addressed by replacing the lighting control module.
- Intake Manifold Coolant Leak: The intake manifold can develop coolant leaks, causing the engine to overheat. This issue is common in the 1996 Crown Victoria and can be addressed by replacing the intake manifold gasket or the intake manifold itself.
- Spark Plug Ejection: The spark plugs can eject from the engine, causing damage to the engine and potential safety hazards. This issue is common in the 2003 Crown Victoria and can be addressed by inspecting the spark plugs and replacing them if necessary.
- Transmission Slips: The transmission can slip, causing issues with acceleration and shifting. This issue is common in the 2005 Crown Victoria and can be addressed by inspecting the transmission and replacing any necessary parts.
These common problems with the Ford Crown Victoria can be addressed by regular maintenance and inspections. By staying aware of these issues, owners can ensure their vehicles remain reliable and safe for daily use.
What was the worst year for the Crown Victoria?
The worst year for Crown Victoria in terms of reliability was arguably 2008. This model year was marked by a number of common problems that plagued owners, including transmission troubles, blown head gaskets, and failures of the fuel pump.
Are Ford Crown Victorias reliable?
The Ford Crown Victoria Reliability Rating is 3.0 out of 5.0, which ranks it 11th out of 12 for fullsize cars. The average annual repair cost is $1,081 which means it has poor ownership costs.
How many miles will a Crown Victoria last?
300K miles
Anything can happen at any age or mileage, but generally speaking, the 4.6 OHC modular engine as installed in most Crown Vics, Grand Marquis, and Town Cars are good for a minimum of 300K miles with an oil change every 6K miles.
Are Crown Vics hard to work on?
Ford Crown Victoria
For one, it is one of the least expensive cars to maintain due to how easy they are to repair. Not only that, finding parts for a Crown Vic is like shooting fish in a barrel.

Ford Crown victoria 2005
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-21
- Date Complaint: 2023-09-22
- VIN: 2FDHP74WX5X
- Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
- Summary: In October 2022 a mechanic successfully replaced a dark gray-colored "seat belt retractor assembly and buckle" on the passenger side of my Ford Crown Victoria in response to an Air Bag dashboard light Lamp Fault Code of "3-4" and a Diagnostic Trouble Code of "B2292" ("Restraint System Seatbelt Pretensioner Error"). Such an error renders the entire supplemental restraint system inoperative and necessitates immediate repair service for safe vehicle operation. In September 2023 the Air Bag light displayed a "3-3" LFC with the "B2292" DTC indicating Restraint System Seatbelt Pretensioner Error on the driver's side. The mechanic and I contacted a Ford dealership for a replacement dark gray-colored seat belt retractor assembly and buckle and were advised that Ford had discontinued manufacture of the part in dark gray and other colors! Ford only offered a tan seat belt assembly. It seemed irresponsible that Ford would discontinue production of such a vital safety part for a vehicle that is used as a personal vehicle, as well as a fleet vehicle for law enforcement organizations, and for state and municipal governments. Without a replacement I could not even pass the state safety inspection to sell the vehicle. To continue to operate the vehicle safely I have no choice but to have a tan seat belt and its accompanying tan interior components installed in a vehicle with a dark gray interior. Please exert whatever influence you have to compel the Ford Motor Company to resume production of the dark gray and other colors of the seat belt retractor assembly and buckle. Thanks.

- Components: STEERING
- Summary: I HAD THIS VEHICLE IN FOR THE RECALL IN 2014 AND ACCORDING TO THE DEALER REPAIR THE STEERING COLUMN WAS WITHIN LIMITS NOT TO COMPLETE THE SECOND HALF OF RECALL 13S08 BUT A FEW WEEKS AGO MY STEERING SHAFT SEPARATED WITH NO WARNING AND I CAME TO A REST IN AN INTERSECTION. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP AND THEY CONFIRMED THE SEPARATION OF STEERING. I DID NOT PUT A CLAIM INTO INSURANCE AND NO DAMAGE WAS DONE TO ANY OTHER VEHICLE SO THE POLICE WERE NOT CALLED. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED UNTIL AFTER THE FAILURE. THANKFULLY I WAS NOT ON THE HIGHWAY. I CONTACTED FORD MOTOR COMPANY AND THEY WERE NO HELP AS WELL AS THE DEALER WHO DID THE RECALL IN 2014. THEY SAID THAT THE RECALL WAS DONE WITHIN THE PERIMETERS OF THE PROCESS AND THAT THEY COULDN'T HELP ME. I NOW HAVE SPENT OVER $1500 ON REPAIRS AND STILL IS NOT CORRECT AND I AM WORRIED ABOUT IT HAPPENING AGAIN. I THINK THAT THE SECOND PART OF THE RECALL SHOULD BE MANDATORY WITH THE BRACKET THAT HOLDS THE COLUMN FROM SLIPPING OUT. JUST PRIOR TO THE STEERING COLUMN BREAKING JUST BEFORE I TURNED THERE WAS A SLIGHT BINDING AND THEN IT SEPARATED. OTHER THAN THAT THERE WAS NO WARNING. I GOT THE RECALL DONE AS SOON AS I GOT THE LETTER IN THE MAIL AND I THINK FORD SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS REPAIR AS WELL AS ALL THE CROWN VICTORIAS ON THE ROAD. THANK YOU.

The Crown Victoria is such an iconic car! Whether you're taking a long road trip or just running errands around town, this car is unbeatable. It handles like a dream and accelerates quickly, making merging onto the freeway a breeze. Driving it is an absolute joy! It was a bit disappointing to see Ford discontinue this car in 2011. In my opinion, there simply won't be another vehicle that's as reliable, comfortable, or cheap to operate as the Crown Victoria. That's why I think we'll continue to see many of them on the road for years to come. The powertrain has a long life, and parts are easy to obtain, so repairs are relatively cheap and straightforward.

I've had mine for over a year now and I traded in my 98 Mercury GM for it. I'm planning to upgrade to a new one soon. I opted for the Police Package and I'm still getting a great 24-25 MPG.

I bought my 1998 Vic used about 5 years ago. The handling & performance package helps plant the car on the road and lets you drive a bit more aggressively. It's nice to drive on the highway, and in the right weather, it can be very peppy off the line. Although gas mileage stinks, many people get good numbers. If you're like me and don't drive much, things do improve if you're on the highway a lot. The car has a 5-star crash rating, lots of room, and is peppier than you'd expect for a dinosaur of a car. Winter driving can be tricky, but with 4 snow tires and a switched-off traction control, you can use your brain to handle it. That's the secret of driving a RWD V8 in the winter.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I bought this car two months ago and it has the police interceptor package. I've fixed the handful of minor problems the car had upon initial purchase. It's really fun to drive with plenty of acceleration and good handling for a car that size. There's plenty of room for the wife and kids, and I feel safe knowing there's a lot of metal around us in the event of an accident.

The Crown Vic is the best car I have ever owned. I have had no major problems and it has always been a joy to drive. I have owned a variety of cars, including Chevys, an F150, Dodges, Mazdas, Hondas, Toyotas, and a Lexus, but the Crown Victoria is the best, hands down.

My Ford is a reliable car with a comfortable ride. Although it may not be as smooth as the Toyota Avalon or the Honda Accord, it still provides a pleasant driving experience. Despite needing a new transmission after 28,000 miles of driving, I am confident in the overall quality of this car. Additionally, it offers a comfortable interior and an average fuel efficiency of 15 miles per gallon.

I have driven almost 600,000 miles on my current engine, which is the second one. I have rebuilt the transmission twice. Although I have experienced some electrical issues with the accessories, I am confident in my ability to handle any challenges that may arise. My previous vehicle was an 84 Chevy Caprice, which I retired after driving it for 400,000 miles with a 305 V8 engine.

I received this car from an elderly woman who was the original owner and had taken great care of it. She provided me with all the dealer service receipts and the original check for $20,000 that she paid for the car. Although the odometer broke at 90K, I was able to determine that the car had between 105K to 125K miles based on the dealer receipts. While the car had some issues, such as the steering wheel electric recall that was repaired twice but still had problems, I was able to use my mechanics degree to diagnose the problems. Some of the parts were poorly manufactured, which caused the electric issues and the misfire. The car also had soft brakes, poor headlights, and shot shocks. Unfortunately, the vacuum hose went and caused the car to break down. However, the engine had awesome power, very good gas mileage for a full-size car, and a luxurious interior. The car was also very quiet and had power everything. Although I was disappointed that I couldn't get the car to last as long as I had hoped, I was able to sell it to the scrapyard for $200 while it could still limp under its own power. It was a sad day for this top-end expensive model Ford, which was originally purchased new by a school teacher from the world's oldest Ford dealership (Tenvoorde Ford of St. Cloud Minnesota).

I bought a 2000 Police Interceptor based on its safety and cooling capacity. It's a blast to drive, but some things need work. I also invested in an aftermarket console for between the seats for only $50 on eBay - it's been a great addition!

The car is a bit noisy and the seats are not very comfortable. Additionally, there are very few appointments for a car of this price. It's worth noting that for the same price, I could have bought a Cadillac Sedan Deville with less than 10,000 miles and only about 3 months old, which comes with a better warranty.
