The Ford Crown Victoria ("Crown Vic") is a full-size sedan that was marketed and manufactured by Ford. The successor to the Ford LTD Crown Victoria, two generations of the model line were produced from the 1992 until the 2012 model years. The Ford counterpart of the Mercury Grand Marquis, the Crown Victoria was the largest sedan marketed by Ford in North America, slotted above the Ford Taurus. The Crown Victoria Police Interceptor (1992–2011) was marketed specifically for law-enforcement use; a long-wheelbase Crown Victoria sedan (2002–2011) was marketed primarily for taxi cab fleets.

The Crown Victoria was produced on the rear-wheel drive, body-on-frame Ford Panther platform, sharing its chassis with the Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car. From 1997 until their 2011 discontinuation, the three model lines were the sole four-door sedans produced in North America with a full-length frame, rear-wheel drive, and a standard V8 engine. While the front and rear crumple zones were engineered into the vehicle, it was one of Ford's products that were not of unibody construction for the entire generation. The Crown Victoria was the last car made using the Ford Panther platform.

For its entire production, the Crown Victoria was produced by Ford Canada alongside the Grand Marquis at St. Thomas Assembly in Southwold, Ontario. From 1991 until 2011, over 1.5 million cars (including Police Interceptors) were produced by St. Thomas Assembly prior to its closure. A 2012 Crown Victoria (intended for Middle East export) was the final vehicle produced by the facility. Following the discontinuation of the model line, the Crown Victoria was not directly replaced, with the full-size Ford Taurus serving as the next basis for Ford police cars.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2001-07-15
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: WE BOUGHT OUR 1998 CROWN VICTORIA USED IN 2001. AT THE TIME OF THE SALE I WAS ASKED IF THERE WAS ANY PROBLEM WITH THE CAR, AND AT THAT TIME I SHOWED THEM THAT THE HEADLIGHTS HAD A HEAVY FILM THAT CAUSED VERY LITTLE LIGHT TO COME THROUGH. I ASKED THEM ABOUT REPLACING THE HEADLIGHTS AND THE DEALER WENT INTO THE OFFICE AND CAME BACK WITH "NO"...BUT THEY WOULD CLEAN THE OUTSIDE OF THE GLASS FOR ME. I DON'T KNOW WHAT PRODUCT THEY USED BUT IT LOOKED OKAY FOR RIGHT THEN. IT DIDN'T LAST AND I BROUGHT THE CAR BACK IN AND THEY STILL REFUSED TO FIX THE PROBLEM. I FEEL THAT THE LENS ON THE HEADLIGHTS HAVE A LEAK IN THE SEALS, SO THE CALCIUM BUILDS UP, OVER A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME,ON THE INSIDE OF THE HEADLIGHT GLASS. IT CAUSES US TO TRAVEL AT NIGHT WITH VERY DIM LOOKING HEADLIGHTS. SINCE WE'VE HAD THIS PROBLEM, I HAVE BEEN NOTICING THE DIFFERENT VEHICLES THAT HAD THE SAME THING WITH THEIR HEADLIGHTS....AND GUESS WHAT----THEY WERE ALL FORD CARS ; AND I DON'T PARTICULARLY KNOW THE 100'S OF DIFFERENT CARS AND MODELS THAT TRAVEL THE ROADS THESE DAYS...SO I HAVE TO ACTUALLY READ "FORD" ON THE CAR IN ORDER TO KNOW IT IS ONE. AS TIME WENT ON AND I TRAVELED UP AND DOWN THE STATE OF CA. I WAS AMAZED AT EACH CAR I SAW WITH HEAVY COATED HEADLIGHTS WAS A FORD...I THINK FORD DEFINITELY HAS A PROBLEM BUT THE DIFFERENT DEALERSHIPS ARE IGNORING THE PROBLEM AND MAKING THE BUYERS LIVE WITH THE PROBLEM INSTEAD OF SOLVING IT. *TR

Negative 1998 Ford Crown victoria car reviews

  1. Lowell Leuschke 2024-11-06

It seems like the car may not be the best fit for you. The build quality and ergonomics may not be up to your standards, and there may be some annoying rattles and poor seat support. Additionally, the climate controls may not be adequate, and the windows may fog frequently. If you're looking for a car to drive for work, a taxi may be a better option. Thank you for considering your options!

Ford's Crown Victoria may not be as luxurious as its predecessors from the 70s when it was known as LTD, but it still offers a lot of value as a full-size car. While it may not be the most high-end option, it is still a reliable and practical choice. Let's not forget that it has been a staple in the market for many years. Overall, the Crown Vic is a great option for those looking for a spacious and dependable vehicle.

Hello! We recently discovered that there is a known issue with Crown vehicles exploding and catching fire in the event of a car crash. Unfortunately, Ford is not currently offering to fix this issue unless the customer pays for it. My partner and I own a '98 Crown and, as professional drivers, we have been fortunate enough to avoid any accidents on Texas roads. However, we are concerned about the safety of our vehicle and the lack of action from Ford. We know of at least two police officers who have lost their lives due to this defect. As a previously loyal Ford customer, we are now considering other options. We believe that it is Ford's responsibility to fix this issue, as they built the car incorrectly. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that I noticed a few areas where your car could use some improvement. For example, the headlights on the fourth set seem to have a poor design and lack quality. Additionally, the front end of the car may be a bit too light for its size, and there is some wind noise that could be addressed. The seat comfort could also be improved, as well as the quality of the rugs and mats. I also noticed that the trunk interior paint is poor and tends to peel off, which can lead to water leaks. The shocks on the car may be a bit too light, and the radio could use some upgrading. Lastly, I wanted to mention that the car is sold with a governor set by the computer at 90mph, which can be changed out for $300. It might also be beneficial for a large car like this to come with a positive track rear end. Thank you for your time and consideration!

Positive 1998 Ford Crown victoria car reviews

  1. Avery Howell 2025-01-01

Your 98 Vicky is truly the best and most reliable car you've ever owned! It's amazing that it's still running strong even after 140,000 miles. Changing it from a single exhaust to duals and upgrading the shocks and springs to severe duty police shocks and springs was a great idea. Now, the beast handles better on the roads and around corners, and the dual exhaust adds a few extra horses giving it more power. It's such a shame that Ford is discontinuing the CV's at the end of 2011. Hopefully, they will reconsider and keep making them.

  2. Judah Lueilwitz 2024-09-04

I had never owned a large car before, but I was pleasantly surprised by its great gas mileage. It averages 24.8 miles per gallon, a combination of city and highway driving. Plus, it's a smooth ride and low cost to maintain!

  3. Eugene Gutkowski 2024-08-09

'98 Crown Vic is the best Vic for performance yet. The rear suspension is terrific on mountain curves and in quick city corners, especially at high speed, much more so than my previous '95 Vic. Mine has the performance and handling package which provides the extra HP and handling to truly enjoy this car. Up to 70MPH, the car is outstanding - from there to 100MPH is when the performance stands out, with no letdown until you do!

  4. Gerard Walter 2024-06-28

The Crown Vic rides like a dream and holds up like nothing. With good maintenance, transmissions can even last up to 100,000 kilometers. This is unheard of in police vehicles. It's an excellent vehicle at an excellent price, and it truly sets the benchmark that police vehicles are built to compete with.

  5. Timothy Hahn 2024-05-18

I'm glad to hear that you haven't had any major issues with your vehicle, although it's a shame that you experienced some initial problems. I understand that the steering boost may not be to your liking and doesn't provide the best feedback to the driver.
