The Ford Crown Victoria ("Crown Vic") is a full-size sedan that was marketed and manufactured by Ford. The successor to the Ford LTD Crown Victoria, two generations of the model line were produced from the 1992 until the 2012 model years. The Ford counterpart of the Mercury Grand Marquis, the Crown Victoria was the largest sedan marketed by Ford in North America, slotted above the Ford Taurus. The Crown Victoria Police Interceptor (1992–2011) was marketed specifically for law-enforcement use; a long-wheelbase Crown Victoria sedan (2002–2011) was marketed primarily for taxi cab fleets.

The Crown Victoria was produced on the rear-wheel drive, body-on-frame Ford Panther platform, sharing its chassis with the Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car. From 1997 until their 2011 discontinuation, the three model lines were the sole four-door sedans produced in North America with a full-length frame, rear-wheel drive, and a standard V8 engine. While the front and rear crumple zones were engineered into the vehicle, it was one of Ford's products that were not of unibody construction for the entire generation. The Crown Victoria was the last car made using the Ford Panther platform.

For its entire production, the Crown Victoria was produced by Ford Canada alongside the Grand Marquis at St. Thomas Assembly in Southwold, Ontario. From 1991 until 2011, over 1.5 million cars (including Police Interceptors) were produced by St. Thomas Assembly prior to its closure. A 2012 Crown Victoria (intended for Middle East export) was the final vehicle produced by the facility. Following the discontinuation of the model line, the Crown Victoria was not directly replaced, with the full-size Ford Taurus serving as the next basis for Ford police cars.

Common 2008 Ford Crown victoria problems

The Ford Crown Victoria 2008 is known for several common problems, mostly related to engine, transmission, and intake manifold issues.

  • MAF Sensor Failure: The mass air flow (MAF) sensor measures the amount of air being drawn into the engine for the computer to help adjust the air/fuel ratio. A bad MAF sensor can cause the computer to misadjust the air/fuel ratio, leading to issues such as the engine running too lean or too rich, erratic idle, less engine power, and problems when starting.
  • Intake Manifold Leaks: The original plastic intake manifold on the Crown Vic was prone to exhaust leaks, but was later upgraded with an aluminum crossover tube.
  • Loose Spark Plugs: Loose spark plugs can cause issues, and if a spark plug pops out while driving, it's recommended to pull over and stop driving immediately.

These issues can be addressed by taking preventative measures, such as regular maintenance and inspections, and by being aware of the potential problems when purchasing a Ford Crown Victoria 2008.

STEERING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-11-06
  • VIN: 2FAFP71V18X
  • Components: STEERING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I HAVE A 2008 FORD CROWN VICTORIA (P71) POLICE INTERCEPTOR. I AM HAVING A KNOCKING NOISE WHEN I TURN THE STEERING WHEEL LEFT TO RIGHT. THE NOISE IS ACCOMPANIED BY A WANDERING STEERING WHEEL WHEN THE VEHICLE GOES OVER BUMPS. ALSO THE STEERING WHEEL SOMETIMES BECOMES HARD TO TURN THEN RAPIDLY BECOMES LOOSE LIKE SOMETHING IS BINDING UP, THEN FINALLY BREAKING FREE THROUGHOUT THE TURN. THIS HAPPENS WHEN TAKING LOW SPEED WIDE TURNS. AFTER INSPECTING THE STEERING COMPONENTS I NOTICED MY EXCESSIVE PLAY WHERE TJE INTERMITTENT STEERING SHAFT ATTATCHES TO THE RACK N PINION. I THINK MY UPPER SHAFT MAY HAVE BEEN REPLACED BEFORE SINCE IT IS NOT NEARLY AS CORRODED AS THE LOWER INTERMITTENT SHAFT. I CAN ROTATE THE WHOLE SHAFT ABOUT A QUARTER TURN IN EITHER DIRECTION WHILE THE CAR PARKED AND AT THE END OF EACH TURN THE KNOCK RESONATES NEAR THE LOWER INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT KNUCKLE TO WHERE IT CONNECTS INTO TJE PINION GEAR OF THE RACK N PINION. NOW, I INSPECTED ALL STEERING AND SUSPENSION COMPONENTS AND THEY ARE ALL IN GOOD SHAPE....NO PLAY ANYWHERE 8N THE SYSTEM BESIDES THE "RECALLED" STEERING SHAFT! I HAVE TWO KIDS AND IF I GET INTO AN ACCIDENT AND THEY GET HURT BECAUSE A "RECALLED" PART DIDNT GET REPLACED BY FORD WHEN IT SHOULD HAVE(FOR FREE) I WILL NEVER FORGIVE THE COMPANY RESPONSIBLE. HONORING A FREE REPLACEMENT FOR AN OBVIOUSLY POORLY ENGINEERED AND DEFECTIVE FACTORY PART SEEMS TO BE TJE RIGJT THING TO DO.....SO WHERE IS MY RECALL AND WHY DOESNT IT SHOW UP WHEN I SEARCH MY CARS VIN NO??? THIS NEEDS TO BE FIXED BEFORE SOMEONE GETS SERIOUSLY INJURED OR EVEN DIES. I DONT MAKE A LOT OF MONEY AND THIS NEEDS TO BE FIXED FOR FREE LILE IT WAS ON ALL THE OTHER VEHICLES. IT DRIVES LILE NEW BESIDES THE SCARY KNOCK AND WANDERING STEERING. IT'S JUST RIDICULOUS NOT TO RECALL THIS PART!

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-07-29
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 2FAFP71V38X
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: I WAS DRIVING STRAIGHT ON A HIGHWAY- ROUTE 2 IN MASSACHUSETTS. AFTER TAPPING ON THE BRAKES TO BEGIN THE PROCESS OF SLOWING DOWN, THE CROWN VICTORIA- ON IT'S OWN- BEGAN TO ACCELERATE AT THE SAME TIME. IT WAS SUDDEN AND UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. AT THAT POINT, I SLAMMED AS HARD AS I COULD ONTO THE BRAKE PEDAL- TO THE POINT WHERE THE BRAKES WERE SMOKING. THE ENGINE OVERWHELMED BRAKES AND I COULD NOT STOP THE VEHICLE- I COULD ONLY SLOW IT DOWN. I ENDED UP REAR ENDING THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME (WHICH HAD COME TO A STOP). EVEN AFTER THE IMPACT, THE CROWN VICTORIA CONTINUED TO PUSH AGAINST THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. THEN, JUST AS SUDDENLY AS IT STARTED, THE FULL BORE ACCELERATION STOPPED. I HAD A PERFECT DRIVING HISTORY PRIOR TO THIS MALFUNCTION. NO ACCIDENTS EVER. I HAD AMPLE SPACE AND TIME TO SAFELY STOP MY VEHICLE. THERE WAS NO PROBLEM WITH MATS. I AM NOT SUING FORD. I AM NOT TRYING TO AVOID THE SURCHARGE. I CAN'T OFFER YOU TANGIBLE PROOF THAT THERE WAS A SUDDEN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION IN MY 2008 FORD CROWN VICTORIA- OTHER THAN MY TRUTHFUL TESTIMONY. I RECENTLY BOUGHT THE VEHICLE AND, UNTIL THAT ONE INCIDENT, IT WAS RUNNING NORMALLY. IT WAS RUNNING NORMALLY IN THE DAYS AFTER THE ACCIDENT. I HAD A "WRENCH" LIGHT COME ON ONCE, A COUPLE OF WEEKS EARLIER BUT IT WAS GONE THE NEXT TIME I STARTED UP THE CAR. SO I DISMISSED IT. THE DAMAGE WAS RELATIVELY MINOR AND I HAVE FULL COLLISION. I CONSIDERED THE CAR SO UNSAFE TO DRIVE, HOWEVER, THAT I TOOK IT OFF THE ROAD AND GAVE IT AWAY. I WARNED THE PERSON I GAVE IT TO THAT THE VEHICLE WAS UNSAFE AND SHOULD BE USED ONLY FOR PARTS. WHAT I AM SAYING IS THE TRUTH AND IT IS CONSISTENT WITH WHAT I TOLD THE MOTORIST I STRUCK AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT.

Negative 2008 Ford Crown victoria car reviews

  1. Dayne Senger 2024-07-20

I bought a 2004 Crown Vic Sport in late 2003 and I really enjoyed driving it. It had a big car but sporty feel with plenty of power. However, when I tried to get out of the car 18 months later, I encountered a problem. Despite paying the hefty $31,000 price for this car, I was disappointed to find out that it was worth only as much as a standard LX. It depreciated $15,500 in just 18 months. In my opinion, it is not worth the investment. I would advise against buying one.

  2. Buster O'Keefe 2024-07-06

Hey there! Have you ever experienced the thrill of riding a rear wheel drive car? This car may not be the most exciting, but it's definitely a solid performer and a rare find for an affordable big car.

Positive 2008 Ford Crown victoria car reviews

  1. Miguel Purdy 2025-01-01

The car is truly exceptional! It has the best mileage I've ever seen for a 4.6L engine and is incredibly reliable. Parts are readily available, making maintenance a breeze. Overall, it's one of the best cars I've ever driven!

  2. Jonathon Moen 2024-11-05

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with this car. I purchased it used and drove 200 miles to Memphis, getting around 28 miles per gallon. I was pleasantly surprised by the excellent gas mileage for its size. The car has great looks, a roomy interior, and a spacious trunk that holds more than my parent's Windstar. These are all fantastic advantages. It already had plenty of power, but I installed dual exhaust, K & N Air Filter, and Performance Chip, which now gives it more power than I could ever use or need. With the 17

  3. Wayne Douglas 2024-10-08

I've had this car for 2 years and driven across the whole of the US 3 times in it. Here are some pros and cons: Pros: It's reliable, and if serviced properly, it will run beautifully, even if you don't change the oil often. It's also cheap! You can buy one for 4,000 USD. It's spacious too. I'm 6'3

  4. Karl Dare 2024-09-26

I bought my Crown Victoria two years ago and I now have just under 50k on it. I'm happy to say that I haven't had a single problem with it during its entire lifetime. It hasn't been in the shop except for regular oil changes. I feel extremely safe in this car; it's very solidly built. I chose this particular car over a similar 2002 Sport model because it had a much firmer ride with better road feel. It's very fast with ample power for freeway merging.

  5. Alexandre Skiles 2024-09-24

The Crown Victoria is such a great car! I've actually owned three of them now, and each one has been just as good as the last. They hardly ever break down, and all you really need to do is keep up with regular fluid changes. Plus, they're super comfortable to ride in - it's like driving around in a boat (in a good way!). And I've noticed that the handling has really improved over the past few years, which is great. Not to mention, this car has plenty of power!
