The Ford Crown Victoria ("Crown Vic") is a full-size sedan that was marketed and manufactured by Ford. The successor to the Ford LTD Crown Victoria, two generations of the model line were produced from the 1992 until the 2012 model years. The Ford counterpart of the Mercury Grand Marquis, the Crown Victoria was the largest sedan marketed by Ford in North America, slotted above the Ford Taurus. The Crown Victoria Police Interceptor (1992–2011) was marketed specifically for law-enforcement use; a long-wheelbase Crown Victoria sedan (2002–2011) was marketed primarily for taxi cab fleets.

The Crown Victoria was produced on the rear-wheel drive, body-on-frame Ford Panther platform, sharing its chassis with the Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car. From 1997 until their 2011 discontinuation, the three model lines were the sole four-door sedans produced in North America with a full-length frame, rear-wheel drive, and a standard V8 engine. While the front and rear crumple zones were engineered into the vehicle, it was one of Ford's products that were not of unibody construction for the entire generation. The Crown Victoria was the last car made using the Ford Panther platform.

For its entire production, the Crown Victoria was produced by Ford Canada alongside the Grand Marquis at St. Thomas Assembly in Southwold, Ontario. From 1991 until 2011, over 1.5 million cars (including Police Interceptors) were produced by St. Thomas Assembly prior to its closure. A 2012 Crown Victoria (intended for Middle East export) was the final vehicle produced by the facility. Following the discontinuation of the model line, the Crown Victoria was not directly replaced, with the full-size Ford Taurus serving as the next basis for Ford police cars.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-06-02
  • VIN: 3FAHP31391R
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: I HAVE A 2001 FOCUS ZX3 - 5SP THAT TENDS TO STALL WHEN THE AC IS ON. BUT IT MAY NOT STALL DURING THE "INITIAL" USE PERIOD. WITHOUT WARNING, IT WILL STALL AFTER THE VEHICLE IS TURNED OFF AND THEN RESTARTED. MY SERVICE SHOP CHECKED THE COMPUTER CODES FOR A PROBLEM AND NOTHING CAME UP. YESTERDAY, IT WAS DRIVEN FOR ABOUT 30MINS WITH THE AC ON (OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE AROUND 80+ DEGREES). THE VEHICLE RAN FINE WITH THE RPMS NORMAL WHEN STOPPED. THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF FOR ABOUT 90 MINS. WHEN ATTEMPTING TO RESTART IT WOULD STALL. TO GET STARTED I NEEDED TO KEEP FOOT ON GAS PEDAL (TO MAINTAIN A HIGH ENOUGH RPM TO PREVENT THE STALL). IF I DID NOT KEEP THE RPMS UP, VEHICLE WOULD STALL. WHILE DRIVING AND STOPPING, I NEEDED TO KEEP MY FOOT ON THE GAS PEDAL TO MAINTAIN THE RPMS. (THIS CAN BE CHALLENGING WITH A 5-SPD.) THE VEHICLE WAS THEN PARKED FOR OVER FOUR HOURS. IT THEN STARTED WITHOUT PROBLEM AND RAN NORMALLY. DURING THIS PERIOD I DID NOT HAVE THE AC ON. I SEE THAT THIS MAY BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE FOCUS. HOWEVER, NEITHER FORD MOTOR'S CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE NOR THE LOCAL FORD DEALER ARE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A FORD DEALERSHIP (ECHELON FORD) ON 6/8/10 FOR A DIAGNOSTIC OF THE PROBLEM AND THEY COULD NOT RECREATE IT. I WAS CHARGED $108 FOR THE SHOP TIME AND STILL HAVE NO TECHNICAL ANSWER TO THIS CRITICAL AND POTENTIALLY FATAL PROBLEM... *TR

Negative 2001 Ford Crown victoria car reviews

The plastic on the doors of this car makes terrible noises when going over rough roads, which has been a major issue for me. Out of all the Fords and Mercurys I've owned, this one is the noisiest and least acceptable.

In the two years I've owned the CV, it has been plagued with issues. However, I can confidently say that I have dealt with each problem effectively. The bad emission sensors required a trip back to the dealer within two weeks, but I was able to resolve the occasional engine troubles on my own. Last week, when the serpentine belt broke, causing the electrical system to fail, the steering to quit working completely, and the engine to overheat, I was able to handle the situation calmly and efficiently. While the CV may not have the best traction in PA winters, I have found ways to manage it. As for the concerns about the gas tank, I have not experienced this personally, but I understand the importance of safety. Despite the super bland exterior styling, I still believe that the CV is a reliable car.

The car has the handling and performance package, which in my opinion, makes it more lively and enjoyable to drive than the standard Crown Victoria. However, it seems that the car is in need of a complete update if Ford wants to keep selling this last big cruiser.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my 2000 Crown Victoria. I bought it for $20,500 back in November of that year and it has been a great investment. Even though it's the basic model, I've put 20,000 miles on it every year and it still runs like a dream. One of my favorite things about it is how roomy it is - as someone who's 6'2

Thanks for sharing your review of the Police Interceptor model of the Crown Vic! It sounds like you got a great deal on a car with a lot of character. Despite needing some work after being decommissioned from a metro police department, you've found it to be fairly reliable and comfortable. It's great to hear that you're getting decent gas mileage, especially for a 2-ton car. It's also good to know that it's fun to drive. If only Ford still made them, right? Thanks again for sharing your thoughts!

Nice car! People often mistake it for a cop car, but it's actually just a really cool ride. It's super fast and fun to drift and do burnouts with. Plus, it's really spacious inside and has a large trunk. In fact, it has more horsepower and torque than my dad's 5.4!

I owned a 1998 before this 2000 and I absolutely love these cars. Both vehicles have been LX's with a handling and suspension package. In my opinion, they are the best full-sized cars on the market, not to mention they are rear-wheel drive.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my 2000 Crown-Vic from California CHP. I was truly amazed at the condition that the vehicle had been kept in both mechanically and cosmetically. The vehicle belonged to the Executive division and saw no patrol time at all. The vehicle rides like a dream and I have had no problems with it whatsoever. I think Ford quality is really evident in the production of this car. The only maintenance required is the usual oil change to keep the car running smoothly. At 113 thousand miles at the time of purchase, who wouldn't be surprised? Even so much that the very next week we bought another Crown Vic-p71 used from the California Highway Patrol for my father. I think it's safe to say that THE BLUE OVAL'S BEST! Thank you for reading.

I can understand why some people may underrate the gas mileage of this cruiser, but in my recent experience, I found it to be quite efficient. I recently took a trip through the mountains from MT Airey NC {Andy's hometown} across US58 in Va. to South Boston Va., and I was able to average 28 MPG with the air conditioning on. Considering the size and comfort of the car, I think this is a great result. Personally, I am very pleased with this vehicle and would highly recommend it to anyone considering a Crown Vic!
