1999 Ford Crown victoria problems
The Ford Crown Victoria ("Crown Vic") is a full-size sedan that was marketed and manufactured by Ford. The successor to the Ford LTD Crown Victoria, two generations of the model line were produced from the 1992 until the 2012 model years. The Ford counterpart of the Mercury Grand Marquis, the Crown Victoria was the largest sedan marketed by Ford in North America, slotted above the Ford Taurus. The Crown Victoria Police Interceptor (1992–2011) was marketed specifically for law-enforcement use; a long-wheelbase Crown Victoria sedan (2002–2011) was marketed primarily for taxi cab fleets.
The Crown Victoria was produced on the rear-wheel drive, body-on-frame Ford Panther platform, sharing its chassis with the Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car. From 1997 until their 2011 discontinuation, the three model lines were the sole four-door sedans produced in North America with a full-length frame, rear-wheel drive, and a standard V8 engine. While the front and rear crumple zones were engineered into the vehicle, it was one of Ford's products that were not of unibody construction for the entire generation. The Crown Victoria was the last car made using the Ford Panther platform.
For its entire production, the Crown Victoria was produced by Ford Canada alongside the Grand Marquis at St. Thomas Assembly in Southwold, Ontario. From 1991 until 2011, over 1.5 million cars (including Police Interceptors) were produced by St. Thomas Assembly prior to its closure. A 2012 Crown Victoria (intended for Middle East export) was the final vehicle produced by the facility. Following the discontinuation of the model line, the Crown Victoria was not directly replaced, with the full-size Ford Taurus serving as the next basis for Ford police cars.

Common 1999 Ford Crown victoria problems
The 1999 Ford Crown Victoria is known for several common problems that owners have reported over the years. Here are some of the most significant issues:
- Loose Spark Plugs: The spark plugs in the 1999 Ford Crown Victoria have a tendency to pop out while driving, which can lead to fuel spillage and, in the presence of an ignition source, a fire. If the spark plug pops out, the fuel injector will pour gasoline into the cylinder with no spark for combustion, causing the gas to fill up and exit the cylinder. This can dry out the inside of the cylinder where oil should be, causing internal parts like the piston and cylinder to wear against each other, creating more engine problems. Fixing loose spark plugs requires honing out the threads in the cylinder, re-tapping the engine cylinder, installing a threaded insert, reinstalling the spark plug, and torqueing it to manufacturers' specifications.
- Intake Manifold Leaks: Intake manifold leaks can cause a ticking noise when the engine is cold and a smell of exhaust fumes. The causes of a bad intake manifold include a cracked intake manifold, a loose or cracked intake manifold gasket, or a damaged throttle body gasket. These issues can lead to a loss of engine power, poor fuel efficiency, and reduced engine performance.
- Steering Shaft Problems: The steering shaft in the 1999 Ford Crown Victoria can separate during vehicle operation, leading to a loss of steering control and an increased risk of a vehicle crash. Failure of the connection between the steering shaft and the steering gear can also lead to fuel spillage and, in the presence of an ignition source, a fire. These issues can be caused by wear and tear, lack of maintenance, or manufacturing defects.
- Seat Belt Problems: The seat belts in the 1999 Ford Crown Victoria may not restrain an occupant in the event of a collision, increasing the risk of injury. These issues can be caused by wear and tear, lack of maintenance, or manufacturing defects.
It's important to note that these issues can vary in severity and frequency, and not all 1999 Ford Crown Victoria owners will experience these problems. However, these are some of the most common issues reported by owners of this vehicle.
Is a 1999 Crown Vic a good car?
Yes. They have one of the best long term reliability records in the industry. They are roomy, comfortable, with decent engines. There is a good reason they have seen decades of use by various government agencies, the Crown Vic is one tough workhorse of a car.
What was the worst year for the Crown Victoria?
Reliability has been a staple in the Ford Crown Victoria's reputation over the years. This comes from Ford's sturdy design, emphasizing durability and easy maintenance. However, reliability wasn't always consistent for the car. The worst year for Crown Victoria in terms of reliability was arguably 2008.
What are common Crown Vic transmission problems?
Slipping, Erratic Shifting, Harsh Forward or Reverse Gear Engagement: Some of the most common 4R75E / 4R75W transmission problems are slipping between gears, erratic up or down shifts, or a hard slam when the 4R75E / 4R75W transmission engages Drive or Reverse.
How long do Crown Vic engines last?
Anything can happen at any age or mileage, but generally speaking, the 4.6 OHC modular engine as installed in most Crown Vics, Grand Marquis, and Town Cars are good for a minimum of 300K miles with an oil change every 6K miles.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-01-13
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: UNDER NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS AT APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH I BEGAN TO SMELL A SWEET BURNING SCENT THAT I QUICKLY RECOGNIZED AS COOLANT. I PULLED OVER & INSPECTED THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THE FIRST THING I OBSERVED AFTER REMOVING THE PLASTIC FACIA FROM THE TOP OF THE ENGINE WAS A CRACK IN THE WATER TEMPERATURE SENSOR HOUSING RIGHT IN FRONT ON THE TOP PASSENGER SIDE OF THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. I WAS LESS THAN A BLOCK FROM MY HOME SO I DROVE HOME AND HAD IT TOWED INTO HARVEY'S AUTO THE NEXT DAY. [XXX] HAS TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THIS INTAKE MANIFOLD AND AS THE ORIGINAL OWNER I SHOULD HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED ABOUT THIS RECALL. I WAS NEVER INFORMED OF ANY RECALLS. [XXX] PLACED A TEMPORARY WELD WHICH HAS HELD UP JUST FINE, HOWEVER HE SAID THAT THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHER ISSUES WITH THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF FORDS ORIGINAL DESIGN AND THAT ULTIMATELY THE MANIFOLD WILL FAIL AT THESE WEAK POINTS WITH TIME. I DON'T PUT HEAVY MILES ON MY VEHICLE & ONLY HAVE 41,102 MILES ON IT NOW. ALL SERVICES HAVE BEEN PERFORMED AT 3000 MILE INTERVALS FROM AUTHORIZED MECHANICS. I HAVE ALL RECEIPTS OF MY SERVICE RECORDS AND FEEL THAT THE ONLY REASON I DIDN'T EXPERIENCE A FAILURE EARLIER IS BECAUSE OF MY DILIGENT EFFORTS TO FOLLOW THE RECOMMENDED SERVICE INTERVALS SET FORTH IN THE VEHICLES MAINTENANCE LOG. I FEEL THAT IT WAS AND STILL IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF FORD TO SEEK OUT ALL OWNERS UNTIL EACH VEHICLE HAS BEEN REPAIRED. THE OF RECALL EXPIRED IN 2009 ACCORDING TO FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE BUT I FEEL THAT THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE EFFORT BY FORD MOTORS TO INFORM ALL OWNERS OF THIS DEFECT. I WOULD APPRECIATE IT IF FORD WOULD ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR SELLING A KNOWN FAULTY ITEM AND EXTEND AND HONOR THEIR ORIGINAL RECALL REPARATIONS FOR MY VEHICLE. I DID MY PART IN FOLLOWING ALL SERVICE REQUIREMENTS AND THEY SHOULD AS WELL. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE AND TIME. SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-07-09
- VIN: 2FAFP73W7XX
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: PREVIOUSLY REPORTED UNDER RECALL # 98V322000. THIS RECALL WAS LIMITED TO 1994-1999 CROWN VICTORIA FLEET VEHICLES, NATURAL GAS, AND LINCOLN TOWNCAR LIMO'S. A PART SEARCH SHOWS ALL CROWN VICTORIAS FROM 1994-1999 USE THE EXACT SAME PART NUMBER FOR THE BALL JOINTS. THERE IS NO DISTINCTION BETWEEN FLEET, PASSENGER,CNG, OR LIMO'S. THIS DEFECTIVE BALL JOINT WAS APPARENTLY USED ON ALL 1994-1999 CROWN VICTORIAS EITHER SOLELY, OR INTERMITTENTLY, BUT NOT LIMITED TO ONLY FLEET/COMMERCIAL VEHICLES. FORD IS DEVELOPING A RECORD FOR PERFORMING RECALLS AND/OR REPAIRING DEFECTS FOR THEIR "FLEET CUSTOMERS" WHILE IGNORING THE AVERAGE CONSUMER WHO IS EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM. IN THIS CASE, HOWEVER, THE ISSUE IS ONE OF SAFETY, BOTH TO THE OCCUPANTS OF THE DEFECTIVE VEHICLE AND TO ALL OTHER VEHICLES ON THE ROAD. I BELIEVE FORD MOTOR CO DELIBERATELY SUPPLIED FALSE INFORMATION TO THE NHTSA REGARDING THE SCOPE OF THIS DEFECT. AN INVESTIGATION SHOULD BE CONDUCTED INCLUDING REVIEWING ACCIDENTS INVOLVING THESE VEHICLES. CURRENTLY, MY 1999 CROWN VICTORIA (68,000 MILES) HAS THE RIGHT LOWER CONTROL ARM LAYING ON THE GROUND IN MY GARAGE. I AM FORTUNATE IT HAPPENED WHILE I WAS PUTTING MY CAR AWAY AND NOT THE NEXT DAY WHEN I WOULD HAVE BEEN TRAVELING AT HIGH SPEEDS ON THE OHIO TURNPIKE. *TR

Negative 1999 Ford Crown victoria car reviews
Positive 1999 Ford Crown victoria car reviews

I purchased this Crown Vic in February 2008 with 98,000 miles for $2700. It has excellent style and very good handling. I added extra reflectors that are well placed, an interceptor emblem, and a honeycomb grille, which makes it look even more impressive. With the spotlight, dark wheels, and recognizable style, people tend to move out of the way or even better, stay away. I also converted to Goodyear touring instead of high rated, which made the ride significantly smoother. The performance is very good, but it seems to shift into overdrive at a low rpm. However, when you push the pedal, the Crown Vic has impressive power for a heavy vehicle. The interior design is basic but fine, and with the center console installed, the overall rating is 8.
-
This car has been a comfortable, reliable, and solid vehicle. I am confident that the next owner will appreciate its quality and performance. Thank you for considering this exceptional car.
-
I was immediately drawn to this car because it was a used police interceptor. I quickly grew to love the smooth ride and excellent handling. I have had very few issues with it, having only replaced parts worth less than $500. Unfortunately, I was involved in an accident when the car had around 120,000 miles on it. Thankfully, I walked away unscathed because the car absorbed all of the impact. If I had been driving a smaller car, I could have been seriously injured or even killed. Despite the damage, I still have a deep affection for this car and it always starts up, even though I can no longer drive it.

I have always owned Crown Vics, and that will never change. This Crown has 292000 miles on it, and still runs like it's brand new. I have never had to do anything to it, and it still doesn't need anything. Although I wouldn't have an LX, the Interceptors have it all.

The engine runs smoothly like a turbine.

The car I purchased was the most affordable full-sized V8 available. However, there are two weak components that need to be addressed. The plastic resin intake manifold is prone to cracking, which can leave you stranded. Additionally, the 4R70W transmission is known to have torque converter shudder, which can be quite irritating. Although I have had my transmission replaced under warranty, the issue still persists. Despite this, I plan to continue driving the car for another three years before considering a replacement. In the future, I may opt for a Honda or Toyota.

I've been driving my Crown Vic for about 6 years now and it's a really comfortable car to drive. While I haven't been able to achieve the same mileage as some others have claimed, I do about 50/50 city and highway driving, and I never encounter any traffic at 4 am when I go to work. During the summer months, I typically get around 250 miles to a full tank of gas. If I do all highway driving, I might get up to 300 miles per tank. If I were to do it again, I would opt for a newer model with rack and pinion steering, as the antiquated system on these cars can wear out parts quickly (such as ball joints and tie rods). I've gone through 2 sets of brakes since I've bought it, but overall, I have no complaints. It has decent power, but it's no Mustang. I did have to change the manifold and the coils, which was a bit pricey, but it was worth it in the end.
