Chevrolet Silverado 1500 problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced for the 1999 model year, the Silverado is the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Taking its name from the top trim level from the Chevrolet C/K series, the Silverado is offered as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2019 model year.

The Chevrolet Silverado shares mechanical commonality with the identically related GMC Sierra; GMC ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation prior to Chevrolet. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.

History

The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).

For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.

In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

Common Chevrolet Silverado 1500 problems

Based on the complaints from owners of Chevrolet Silverado 1500 cars, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:

  1. Four-Wheel-Drive Transfer Case Position Sensor/Selector Switch Failure:
    • This problem can lead to a malfunction in the 4WD system, causing potential trouble, especially in off-road situations.
    • Nearly 900 owners have reported this issue in models from 1999 to 2017.
    • Diagnosis typically costs around $100, but repair costs can increase if the selector switch needs replacement.
  2. Heating and A/C Temperature and Air Delivery Mode Door Actuator Failure:
    • When this component fails, the HVAC system is unable to deliver air for heating or cooling the cabin.
    • Over 450 owners have experienced this problem in Silverado 1500 models from 1999 to 2016.
    • Diagnostic visits and potential repair costs are necessary to address this issue.
  3. Fuel Level Sensor Failure:
    • This issue often leads to misreading the fuel level in the gas tank.
    • Nearly 400 owners have reported this problem in models from 1999 to 2013.
    • Replacement of the sensor is required, with recommendations to replace the entire fuel pump module on high-mileage vehicles, costing around $1,200.
  4. Failure to Start (Random):
    • This problem can be caused by a faulty ignition switch or a dead battery, leading to difficulties in starting the vehicle.
    • Owners have reported spending around $300 per fix to address this issue, which may not always guarantee a solution.
  5. Speaker Failure:
    • Many owners have faced issues with speakers failing, particularly in the doors, affecting the audio system of the vehicle.
    • Replacing the speakers may not always resolve the problem, potentially requiring a transmission rebuild or replacement, which can be costly.
  6. Excessive Consumption of Oil:
    • Some owners have reported high oil consumption in their Chevrolet Silverado 1500 vehicles.
    • This issue can lead to the need for frequent oil top-ups and potential engine damage if not addressed promptly.

These common problems highlight various issues that Chevrolet Silverado 1500 owners may encounter, ranging from minor inconveniences to more significant mechanical challenges. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to these issues can help ensure the longevity and reliability of these vehicles.

As of writing this still not fixed.

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2023
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-28
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-21
  • VIN: 1GCUDEED7PZ
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: Three weeks ago, I exited my running truck and saw that the left front driving light wasn't working. Turned the turn signal on and it would not function either. At first the rear light was blinking normally. Then after about a minute it began to flash rapidly and the display showed, check left front turn signal. Shut it off and unit worked after restart. Two weeks later, did the same thing. This time it did not reset until the next day. It seems to malfunction when the headlights are activated, and I noticed there is a unit mounted on the back of the headlight assembly that appears to control it and the headlights, as it is one unit. I recorded it on video, and when I took it to the dealer, they were able to confirm the issue. They are going to replace that assembly. After some research, I am discovering that this is beginning to look like a common issue as others that own 2022 model years and up report the same thing. My vehicle has only 12,600 miles on it, and I have found people with 2024 GMC trucks also experiencing it. This is concerning as it is a safety issue with nonfunctioning turn signals or running lights. As I stated before, the first time it happened there was no warning that the driving light wasn't working nor was there a warning the first time it happened that the front turn signal wasn't flashing for over one minute. Most times your signal isn't on for that period of time. Mine is warranted but some people said that without proof; the dealer can't duplicate the issue, so they aren't replacing it. Out of warranty the lighting unit costs about 1,500.00 and it isn't something an average individual can replace. GM also charges a 200.00 core charge on these. The service manager called it a restricted item. I would appreciate your looking into this to see how widespread this might be. I'm assuming it has something to do with the headlights being on and the heat generated by them causing the failure, but that is just a guess. It is a safety issue though

I purchased my truck a year ago this week and it has complete car fax records for every service since new. Despite having 82K miles on it, there is no rust, which is amazing since most of these trucks are prone to rust. Unfortunately, I experienced a gauge failure on the way home which resulted in zero oil pressure. As a new owner, I didn't realize that faulty gauges are a normal and recall item. After being flat bedded home, the belt flew off a week later and it required another flat bed trip for repair. On a cold day, I experienced a flat tire while driving. Although we were eventually able to get the spare down, it was rusted to the lowering mechanism and would not come off. We then had trouble getting it to go back up, resulting in another flat bed trip, making it three in three months. Now, the ABS is acting up, which is another known issue with Silverados and will cost $660 to fix. Since purchasing the truck, I have driven 7900 miles and spent $2471.00 on repairs and regular service, which is about $0.24 cents per mile on repairs. The gas mileage is about 12-14 mpg, which is not great, and the power is very limited on the V-6. On a windy day, using the overdrive is a pipe dream. Overall, it has been a challenging truck to own and maintain, but I am hopeful that I can find a better fit for my needs in the future.

Hey there! Just wanted to give you a heads up about the shifter on the console. If you accidentally bump it, it might go into neutral or even reverse. Also, the safety sensors can be a bit dangerous. Sometimes when you try to get out of the way, it locks up the brakes or jerks you back. I'm already looking for something else and getting rid of this problem vehicle.

The truck is certainly powerful and can pull anything you need it to. However, after only one week of owning it, I noticed some paint chips on the doors while washing it for the second time to apply the second coat of wax. Unfortunately, every week it seems to have new chips in the paint. Additionally, there are some spots of rust on the undercarriage already. While it may not be the most high-quality truck out there, it still gets the job done. Personally, I might have preferred a Tundra, but this truck has its own unique strengths.

This is a good looking vehicle, and while there is a constant clunking noise, it is important to note that GM has acknowledged this as a normal occurrence due to torque buildup between the transmission and transfer case. It is worth mentioning that the 2005 model has been updated to eliminate this issue. Additionally, GM offers a free extended warranty to address this concern. Although I already have the warranty, an engineer was sent out to assess the issue and confirmed a problem. While it may be frustrating, it is important to trust in GM's expertise and their commitment to providing quality vehicles.

This was the first new vehicle I ever purchased and I absolutely loved it! It rides like a car and I haven't had too many problems with it. Although, the front pinion seal on the rearend was replaced at 20000 miles, I've gone through 2 sets of rear brake pads and still on the original front ones. Unfortunately, the ABS light is starting to come on. The worst thing about it is the gas mileage, as I only get 11 mpg city.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying the smooth ride in your '06 crew cab! It's great to know that the engine is strong and that the sound system is top-notch. The comfortable seating is definitely a plus as well!

I am the second owner of a well-maintained 2003 Silverado LS 4WD with the Z71 package. Despite being a 12-year-old truck, it has held up exceptionally well, with the paint still being super glossy. The powertrain is still rock solid, especially the engine. All of the electrical components work perfectly, and in the two years that I've owned it, I've only had to change out the starter. When I purchased the vehicle, I had a total flush and replacement of all the fluids (transmission, power steering, brakes, antifreeze, transfer case, front and rear differentials), which I highly recommend you do with any 4WD you purchase used with over 100K on the clock. I've only replaced the starter and had the instrument cluster serviced (stepper motors replaced and LED lights changed to blue - $75 fix). I'm very proud to own this truck because it was obviously taken care of by the previous owner. However, there are a couple of gripes. The transmission is clunky when shifting from 1st to 2nd and also 2nd to 3rd. Also, when driving at 45 mph and at 65 mph, the extended cab and crew cab versions of the Silverado (also GMC's version the Sierra) transfer vibration through the cabin. Both the shift and vibration issues are simply design flaws. GM recommends placing 300 to 500 pounds directly in the middle of the truck bed to stop the vibration, but who is going to do that? So, you can't fix the vibration issue, but I plan on replacing the transmission with a rebuilt and hardened version of the 4L60E automatic that will address the hard shifting. Fortunately, you can find these transmissions relatively cheap, with the biggest issue being able to find a good mechanic to install it without it costing too much. Overall, for a pickup I purchased with 132K on the odometer, I am extremely happy, and I've only had light maintenance done so far. The 4.8L V8 doesn't leak oil, and parts are cheap because there are millions of Silverados and Sierras on the road. I plan on keeping this truck for a minimum of five to ten more years.*** UPDATE *** Hey there! This is my weekend vehicle and I've had it for nearly 3 years now. I've only driven it for 10,000 miles and unfortunately, the brakes just gave out on me. After some investigation, I found out that the brake hard lines are made of inferior metal. Luckily, when the pedal went to the floor, I was on a remote road with no other cars around. It's going to cost me $1200 to replace all of the defective lines with non-corrosive copper/nickel lines. Thank goodness I have a quality mechanic because I've heard horror stories about $3000 fixes at the dealership. Despite this issue, I'm still keeping the truck and my mechanic says that this isn't just a GM issue. He says that most older pickups/large SUV's brake lines have failures and he sees this quite often at his shop.

This is a fantastic truck! It has a comfortable and handsome design, and an impressive combined mileage of 17.5 MPG. The steering is powerful and precise, and it also has an automatic transfer case. Although there are a few minor issues, such as a cold start knock and a weak intermediate steering shaft, these have been replaced. Additionally, there have been some reports of bad fuel gauge sending units, but this has not happened to me yet. Overall, this is the best truck I have ever driven, and the minor issues are outweighed by the many positives. GM should have addressed these minor issues from the start, but they do not detract from the overall quality of the truck.

I've been wanting a truck for a while now and I'm really happy with my choice of this vehicle over the F-150. So far, my experience with it has confirmed that I made the right decision. One thing I really appreciate is how smooth it rides. The only thing I'm not too fond of is how the air conditioner automatically switches back to outside air, but I'm sure I'll figure it out soon enough.
