Chevrolet Silverado 1500 problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced for the 1999 model year, the Silverado is the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Taking its name from the top trim level from the Chevrolet C/K series, the Silverado is offered as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2019 model year.

The Chevrolet Silverado shares mechanical commonality with the identically related GMC Sierra; GMC ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation prior to Chevrolet. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.

History

The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).

For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.

In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

Common Chevrolet Silverado 1500 problems

Based on the complaints from owners of Chevrolet Silverado 1500 cars, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:

  1. Four-Wheel-Drive Transfer Case Position Sensor/Selector Switch Failure:
    • This problem can lead to a malfunction in the 4WD system, causing potential trouble, especially in off-road situations.
    • Nearly 900 owners have reported this issue in models from 1999 to 2017.
    • Diagnosis typically costs around $100, but repair costs can increase if the selector switch needs replacement.
  2. Heating and A/C Temperature and Air Delivery Mode Door Actuator Failure:
    • When this component fails, the HVAC system is unable to deliver air for heating or cooling the cabin.
    • Over 450 owners have experienced this problem in Silverado 1500 models from 1999 to 2016.
    • Diagnostic visits and potential repair costs are necessary to address this issue.
  3. Fuel Level Sensor Failure:
    • This issue often leads to misreading the fuel level in the gas tank.
    • Nearly 400 owners have reported this problem in models from 1999 to 2013.
    • Replacement of the sensor is required, with recommendations to replace the entire fuel pump module on high-mileage vehicles, costing around $1,200.
  4. Failure to Start (Random):
    • This problem can be caused by a faulty ignition switch or a dead battery, leading to difficulties in starting the vehicle.
    • Owners have reported spending around $300 per fix to address this issue, which may not always guarantee a solution.
  5. Speaker Failure:
    • Many owners have faced issues with speakers failing, particularly in the doors, affecting the audio system of the vehicle.
    • Replacing the speakers may not always resolve the problem, potentially requiring a transmission rebuild or replacement, which can be costly.
  6. Excessive Consumption of Oil:
    • Some owners have reported high oil consumption in their Chevrolet Silverado 1500 vehicles.
    • This issue can lead to the need for frequent oil top-ups and potential engine damage if not addressed promptly.

These common problems highlight various issues that Chevrolet Silverado 1500 owners may encounter, ranging from minor inconveniences to more significant mechanical challenges. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to these issues can help ensure the longevity and reliability of these vehicles.

As of writing this still not fixed.

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2023
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-28
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-21
  • VIN: 1GCUDEED7PZ
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: Three weeks ago, I exited my running truck and saw that the left front driving light wasn't working. Turned the turn signal on and it would not function either. At first the rear light was blinking normally. Then after about a minute it began to flash rapidly and the display showed, check left front turn signal. Shut it off and unit worked after restart. Two weeks later, did the same thing. This time it did not reset until the next day. It seems to malfunction when the headlights are activated, and I noticed there is a unit mounted on the back of the headlight assembly that appears to control it and the headlights, as it is one unit. I recorded it on video, and when I took it to the dealer, they were able to confirm the issue. They are going to replace that assembly. After some research, I am discovering that this is beginning to look like a common issue as others that own 2022 model years and up report the same thing. My vehicle has only 12,600 miles on it, and I have found people with 2024 GMC trucks also experiencing it. This is concerning as it is a safety issue with nonfunctioning turn signals or running lights. As I stated before, the first time it happened there was no warning that the driving light wasn't working nor was there a warning the first time it happened that the front turn signal wasn't flashing for over one minute. Most times your signal isn't on for that period of time. Mine is warranted but some people said that without proof; the dealer can't duplicate the issue, so they aren't replacing it. Out of warranty the lighting unit costs about 1,500.00 and it isn't something an average individual can replace. GM also charges a 200.00 core charge on these. The service manager called it a restricted item. I would appreciate your looking into this to see how widespread this might be. I'm assuming it has something to do with the headlights being on and the heat generated by them causing the failure, but that is just a guess. It is a safety issue though

I purchased a 2021 Silverado 1500 High Country Deluxe and unfortunately experienced some issues with the heater core and cylinder 1 exhaust lifter. Despite the challenges, the service department was able to address the problems in a timely manner. While I did encounter some difficulties reaching GM Canada, overall I am confident in the quality of my truck and would recommend it to others.

I recently purchased a 2021 Trail Boss LT with a 5.3 engine and 10-speed transmission. Unfortunately, I've experienced some issues with the truck stuttering and lurching when accelerating at low speeds. I've read online that others have had similar issues, with some suggesting it may be related to the transmission or DFM, while others believe it could be due to an improper torquing of the ball joint. While I'm concerned about the issue, I'm hopeful that the dealer will be able to fix it soon. I understand that these things can happen with any vehicle, but I'm disappointed that it's happened so soon after purchasing my new truck. I'll be sure to update my review once I receive the truck back from the dealer. Thank you for your understanding.

I recently purchased a used 99 Silverado 4WD with only 80k original miles from a 90-year-old man who only used it to pull his boat. I was thrilled to finally have a full-size Chevy truck to build up, and I thought I knew what I was doing, having had success with other vehicles in the past. However, it turned out to be a $6000 learning curve. I bought the truck for blue book value at the time, which was $8500, and the old man agreed to sell it to me for that price, even though he initially wanted $10000. I started buying lots of stuff online from Summit, Jeggs, Amazon, Ebay, CL, etc. I replaced old engine components like the power steering pump, new pulleys and belt, higher amp alt, new water pump, and interior upgrades like a touch screen stereo, speakers, and new dashboard. I also installed a new alarm system, a new full exhaust system upgrade, and new shocks all the way around. I serviced the entire truck with the best quality fluids, installed a new Rhino front bumper, new rims, and a K&N cold air intake. I replaced all the lights and bulbs, new weather stripping, removed all molding and badges from the exterior of the body, and replaced a bunch of little things as well. I even cleaned up the entire undercarriage, gave it a full chassis lube, and sprayed it with weather guard. I was going all in, planning on never selling this truck for the rest of my life. Unfortunately, things didn't work out like that. What I failed to realize was how unreliable these trucks really were, especially the first generation 5.3 LM engines. These engines were junk, with pistons that had too short of skirts on them, causing a terrible piston slap sound upon start-up when it's cold. GM did acknowledge this issue, claiming it was not anything that would prevent these engines from seeing 300k miles or more, but there was no fix for it.Trucks made by GM from 2000 onwards had better pistons installed, which fixed the previous problems. However, the transmission did not have overdrive. When I test drove the truck before purchasing it, I did not take it on the freeway, so I was unaware of this issue. It was a mistake on my part. Although the truck was quick on side streets, even as a 4WD, it was not suitable for the freeway and had poor gas mileage. When my wife and I had to move to another state, I knew I could not take the truck with me due to its lack of overdrive and poor gas mileage. I sold it for $8500, a little over a year after purchasing it, and ended up eating the cost of all the parts, labor, and time I spent working on it. To be honest, I was happy to see it go, not only because of the issues I mentioned, but also because it seemed like the more I did to it, the more the truck malfunctioned. Something different was always breaking or malfunctioning constantly. This truck was a total money pit. I would not consider buying another one of these early years of Silverado again. These trucks were not like the square bodies with the 350's. These trucks were not good quality, and ACDelco parts were not reliable. Therefore, I would not recommend this truck. Instead, I would suggest doing research and buying a truck with better quality, such as an old square body or a Tundra. Live and learn.

Although I initially liked the truck, I encountered several problems. However, I was able to address each issue with confidence. The power window switch was replaced with the entire modularized motor ($150), and the 2WD HI/LOW/4WD modularized button panel on the dash was also replaced ($200). Additionally, the anti-lock brake actuator/controller was replaced ($1200). The drive shaft splines have been deburred seven times, and the rear seals of the transfer case have been replaced. During a recent tune-up, I discovered that the fuel pump was leaking fuel back into the pump, causing hard starting. I confidently replaced the module ($400) and also replaced the gear shift lever module ($700) to address the loose gear shift lever.

My Trail Boss 5.3l had multiple issues, including A/C problems, a purge valve issue, and a lifter failure that damaged 2 injectors and bent 2 push rods. Despite having only 6700 miles on it, I decided to get rid of it. Unfortunately, GM was unable to provide any solutions for the A/C problems, and there were several other trucks in the shop with lifter failures.

I purchased this truck on June 13th, 2011 with 147,000 km. Today, on November 27th, 2013, it has 182,000 km. I bought it from the original owner who claimed to have never spent a penny on it, other than yearly oil changes. I recently replaced all the brake lines, front brakes, rotors, and one front bearing. I still make sure to oil the truck yearly. The frame and body are in excellent shape and I am very satisfied with this truck. Additionally, I am running 35-inch tires and a lift kit.

I purchased my Silverado from the dealer in 2013 as a trade-in from its one owner. At the time, it had 40,000 miles on it. Since then, it has been one of the best vehicles I have ever owned, and I have owned plenty in my 41 years. It still runs as tight and smooth as my 2010 Ford Explorer, which I am currently having issues with. The four-wheel drive is going out and making noises. In contrast, my Silverado is running strong with 65,000 miles on it now. I have owned plenty of both Chevy and Ford vehicles, but never at the same time. This experience has shown me where the quality lies, and it's with Chevy. I have even told my wife that her next vehicle should be a Chevy.

My package, the Custom, which comes with extended cab 4x4 5.3 6spd, is not listed here. Despite the transmission issues, I would still rate this truck a 5 star. Having previously owned a 2010 Silverado LS 4.8 4x4, I can confidently say that this truck has excellent power and gears for hilly roads. With 300 ft/lb torque at 2k rpm, passing power is great during trips to Pittsburgh on Route 28. The Custom package also includes color matched bumpers, 20 inch chrome clad wheels, larger touch screen radio screen, auto lock heavy duty rear-end, improved towing capacity of 9200lbs, trans cooler, and more. It's important to read the options carefully before purchase, as I was surprised to find out that the truck does not come with key-less entry. However, this was easily remedied with an aftermarket remote start. The shifting issues are most noticeable during in-town driving, but can be resolved by adapting with throttle position or by putting it into tow mode. Overall, I am extremely pleased with the truck's capabilities for daily driving, hauling, and towing. It handled 4k lbs worth of retaining wall block and towed a car effortlessly. My average fuel economy has been an honest 20mpg.I live 20 miles north of Pittsburgh and work in the city. The area is known for its heavy traffic, with a lot of highway and stop-and-go driving. During a recent trip to South Carolina, I was pleased to find that my truck averaged 22mpg. In addition to the improved power and styling, the truck also features an armrest compartment and eyeglass holder, which may seem like small details, but are important to me. Overall, I am confident in saying that this is an excellent truck!

I'm on my second Silverado now. My previous truck was an 07 LT 4WD extended cab. The only real issue I had with it was the tire pressure sensors, which never worked right. I traded it in for my 09 LTZ 4WD and I couldn't be happier. This truck is perfect for a night on the town or plowing through the mud on mountain roads of North Carolina. When I got it, it had 65K miles and now it's at 110K and still flawless. I haven't had any mechanical issues whatsoever. It has good power, great ground clearance, and the ride is smooth, quiet, and comfortable. My only complaint is the cost of routine maintenance. $400 to change spark plugs? Seriously? From now on, I'll be getting routine maintenance done by my local mechanic and NOT at the dealership. I've read about some of the problems others are having, but I'm not experiencing any of those issues. Maybe I'm just lucky. I hope this will be the last truck I ever have to buy.

I got my 2006 LT2 ext. cab silverado in april of 2010. It was very clean with only 35,000 miles on it.Now its October and I have replaced both front rotors after they warped, the passenger side window on the back door was replaced because it leaked air. They did a very poor job of that. Now the other side is leaking. The front end knocks I think its the rack and pinion so it is going back for that too. It also has a rattle in the dash, sounds like the instrument panel. Otherwise its GREAT.
