2011 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced for the 1999 model year, the Silverado is the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Taking its name from the top trim level from the Chevrolet C/K series, the Silverado is offered as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2019 model year.

The Chevrolet Silverado shares mechanical commonality with the identically related GMC Sierra; GMC ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation prior to Chevrolet. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.

History

The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).

For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.

In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

Common 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 problems

Based on the information gathered from the sources provided, here are the common problems with the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2011 based on complaints from owners:

  • Cracking Dashboards:
    • Many owners reported cracking dashboards in the 2011 Silverado 1500, typically appearing after 40,000 miles. These cracks are seen around the steering cowl or the passenger-side airbag panel, with concerns raised about safety hazards. Despite no recalls, some drivers faced resistance from the manufacturer for repairs or replacements, leading to class-action lawsuits.
  • Oil Consumption and Engine Issues:
    • The 5.3L Vortec engine with Active Fuel Management in the 2011 Silverado had issues with excessive oil consumption, leading to engine warning lights and rough running. Low oil levels caused damage to the engine interior, prompting technical bulletins from Chevy to address the problem. Despite efforts, some owners still faced engine-related challenges and launched class-action suits alleging GM sold a faulty engine.

These problems highlight key issues faced by owners of the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, ranging from traction control system malfunctions to dashboard cracks and engine-related concerns. Each problem requires attention and potential maintenance to ensure the truck's optimal performance and safety.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-11
  • VIN: 1GCRKSE36BZ
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: Unknown. I doubt this will qualify but it seems to be a very common issue so I feel it is worth bringing attention to. I recently bought a truck from a state action that was a prior police vehicle as stated by the title. Once I purchased it and drove it home I was inspecting it and found a rust spot on the frame. As I cleaned dirt and debris off of it I discovered that the frame from just before the drivers side door all the way to where it bends up at the gas tank was completely rotted out. Specifically the bottom of the frame is fully gone. Doing research into repairs it seems that this generation and brand of vehicle had this problem seemingly universally. Which leads me to think it may have been a defect in manufacturing. Due to the bottom rusting out it’s hard to spot unless you crawl underneath. I’m sure I don’t have to go into detail as to why a compromised frame that people could be unaware of could be dangerous.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-10
  • VIN: 3GCPKREA2BG
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I am the original owner of a 2011Chevy Silverado 1500. At this time, the frame of the vehicle is badly rusted, and i was made aware after conducting research that General Motors had failed to properly apply anti corrosion material to the frame, which caused the frame to rust prematurely. The rear crossmember its totally rusted and could pose a problem in the very near future. By failing to apply anti corrosion material to the frame, it caused the acceleration and decay of the entire structure of the frame. This was visibly observed by both a NJ approved autobody shop as well as an independent repair shop where suspension work had just been completed.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-14
  • VIN: 1GCPKSE35BF
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I put my truck up on a 2 post lift to change the brakes. But once the full truck weight was on the lift the frame started to crack i instantly put it on the ground and took a look and found that there was a crack through the middle of my frame on the side facing me Spanning from the back part where it starts to go up all the way to about the part of the frame under the middle of the drivers door. Then I took a look under it and saw a large hole in the frame where the lift was placed. I proceeded to feel in the previously mentioned hole and found some of the frame was paper thin other parts where about half the thickness of a good part of the frame. After this I took it into my local GM dealer to take a look at it they said that the frame is definitely in a very bad shape but it will hold but it will be an issue in the future. I feel i could be put at risk because I could hit a bad part of road at some point in the future and it could damage the frame more or completely brake.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-06-01
  • VIN: 1GCRKSE38BZ
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: This is the 3rd year in a row that i have to have the frame welded due to corrosion. I finally did an internet search and found this to be a severe problem for owners of Chevy Silverados. In my opinion, a truck frame should last longer than 100K miles. Why did the U.S. hold Toyota accountable when their truck frames rotted out a few years ago, but won't hold GM to the same standard? The dealership said there is nothing they can do about it, i'm hoping out government can. There are too many of these trucks driving around with frames on the verge of cracking or rear shocks falling off. Thank you

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-29
  • VIN: 1GCRKSE33BZ
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: This GM vehicle presents a safety risk to the public. The frame of the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 has prematutely rusted and corroded. GM fully understands and acknowledges this public safety risk only through a "Technical Service Bullitin" (service bulletin number 19-NA-255) which states that GM is aware of the lack of application of protective coating on this year and model. This "technical" concern urgently must be upgraded to a recall. The truck in its entirety and the public are at risk. The premature frame corrosion caused by the failure to apply protective coating which GM acknowledges, can, and presumably has, result in DEATH. The structural integrity of the entire vehicle should not be categorized as a safety bulletin. An incident due to faulty manufacturing resulting in death, is by definition a recall. Above mentioned vehicle does not meet minimum safety standards or poses an unreasonable safety risk due to defects that could harm consumers, hinder performance, or cause legal issues for the manufacturer.

  • Summary: Complete structural failure of chassis (Frame). Upon inspection on a mechanics lift the frame is cracked in several places and due to the undersized structural components and type of steel resulted in extensive corrosion. Negative 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 car reviews

  1. Jordon Wehner 2024-09-14

I appreciate the looks and ride of the vehicle, however, the 6-speed transmission has some issues during low-speed gear changes. Despite GM's claim that it is normal, I believe that it requires repair.

  2. Milo Rice 2024-05-25

This truck may not have met the expectations of the previous owner, but it still has a lot of potential. While it may not have the best gas mileage, it is a reliable vehicle that can handle a variety of tasks. With proper maintenance and care, it can continue to serve its purpose for years to come. As with any vehicle, it is important to address any issues promptly and seek professional advice when needed. Overall, this truck has a lot to offer and can be a valuable asset for the right owner.

  3. Ray Herzog 2024-04-29

If you're looking for a truck that rides smoothly like a Cadillac and tows like a champion, then the Silverado is a great choice. I've had mine for a year and it's been perfect for road trips and towing. However, if you're looking for a truck that's more exciting to drive, with the ability to jump when you hit the gas and get sideways on demand, then the Nissan might be a better fit for you. As a former Silverado owner, I can attest to this. Best regards!

Despite owning my new 2011 truck for less than 2 months and driving only 1K miles, I have experienced a concerning noise and jolting during low speed shifts in the transmission. Despite taking it back to the dealership twice, the service manager has informed me that nothing can be done to fix the issue. As a confident consumer, I expect a resolution to this problem given the significant investment of $36K plus tax in this vehicle.

I really enjoy the ride quality of my truck, and I always get compliments when cruising through town. Out of all the trucks I compared it to, I think the exterior design is the best. However, I do think the interior could use some improvement. It feels a bit plain and boring, and I don't think enough thought and time has gone into the design and layout. I live 12 miles from the nearest town and travel daily on the interstate, which seems to be affecting the brakes significantly. Despite the fact that my truck is brand new and only 3 months old with about 7000 miles on it, I have already had to replace the ceramic disk brakes twice. I will admit that sometimes I tend to have a heavy foot and really push the vehicle, but this is not often.

I have the 6-speed transmission and have driven 3000 miles so far with no problems or noise. I absolutely love the truck and received a fantastic deal on a dealer promotion. The only issue I've had is with the OnStar remote access app. While I can unlock and lock the doors, every time I try to use the remote start function, it tells me that the keys can't be in the truck. However, every time I've tried it, the keys were NOT in the truck. Despite three calls to OnStar, the problem has not been resolved. Other than that one thing, I have never owned a nicer vehicle. I love the all-star package, and the Bluetooth calls are far better than the ones I had before with a $1200 aftermarket head unit. It would be great to see spray-in bed liners as standard, but overall, it's a great truck!!

I've had this truck for over a year now and I absolutely love it! It currently has 11500 miles on it. I noticed that I seem to be the only one who has reviewed it with the bigger 6.2 V8 instead of the smaller 5.3 V8. (I had two 5.3s before and they weren't that great - no power.) Let me tell you, it doesn't get great gas mileage - 13 in the city and 16.5 on the highway - but I knew this when I got it. The ride is fantastic and the BOSE stereo sounds amazing. I've even pulled 4 ATVs and all the camping gear, which weighed about 8000 lbs, and still passed other trucks like they were standing still. With 403 HP, this truck is a powerhouse!

It's been about 8 months since I got the truck.

This 2000 Chevy Silverado long bed is just what you need for an old farm truck for lumber yard trips and tool hauling.

You've owned this vehicle since it was new and it has been a reliable companion. Apart from the outside door handle breaking off and the Mass Air Flow Sensor needing a good cleaning, which you were able to do yourself, the vehicle has been trouble-free. With only the tires and batteries needing replacement after 56000 miles, you have no complaints. The towing package and 5.3L engine make for comfortable light trailering.
