2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 problems

The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced for the 1999 model year, the Silverado is the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Taking its name from the top trim level from the Chevrolet C/K series, the Silverado is offered as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2019 model year.

The Chevrolet Silverado shares mechanical commonality with the identically related GMC Sierra; GMC ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation prior to Chevrolet. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.

History

The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).

For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.

In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

Common 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, several common problems have been reported:

  • Instrument Panel Display Malfunction:
    • Some owners experienced complete failure of all instrument panel displays without any apparent damage to the vehicle. Additionally, issues like the ABS light coming on while other features fail have been reported.
  • Fuel Level Sensor Failure:
    • Owners have reported inaccuracies in fuel level readings due to fuel level sensor failures. This can lead to the dashboard inaccurately displaying fuel levels, showing the tank as empty even when it's full. Replacing the fuel level sensor may not always resolve the issue, with some owners experiencing erratic fuel level readings.
  • Excessive Oil Consumption:
    • A significant concern reported by owners is excessive oil consumption, with some vehicles burning through a quart of oil every 1,000 miles driven. This issue is attributed to engine cylinder problems causing lower RPMs, leading to increased oil usage.
  • Airbag Deployment Issues:
    • In some accidents, only the passenger door airbags have deployed, while the driver side and other airbags did not activate. This occurred with specific trim models like the LT, raising safety concerns for drivers and passengers.
  • HVAC Actuator Failures:
    • Owners have reported failures in one or more air conditioner or heater air delivery and temperature model door actuators. This can result in improper or no air delivery or temperature control in affected areas of the vehicle, impacting comfort and climate control.
  • Steering Wheel Position Sensor Failure:
    • Some owners have encountered issues with the steering wheel position sensor, leading to a service stability message and intermittent warnings like StabiliTrak and Traction Control displaying on the dashboard. While this doesn't hinder driving, it can be a persistent issue requiring sensor replacement.

These common problems reported by owners of the 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 highlight various technical and safety concerns that can impact the vehicle's performance, safety features, and overall driving experience.

I traded my 2000 Silverado in 2013 to buy my current truck, and the frame on the 2000, was totally sound, and had a lot of life left in it at over 1000K. Toyota replaced the Rusting frames on their trucks, and so should Chevy. I could provide photos if necessary ... I saw the rotted frame when the truck was on a lift.

Negative 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 car reviews

  1. Abel Osinski 2024-10-20

I have found that my 2012 Silverado is not as satisfactory as my 2006 Ram. Despite both being half ton 4x4 4 door trucks, the Silverado's ride is less comfortable and its response to throttle input is not as smooth as the Dodge. I am disappointed with my purchase and hope to find a better solution in the future.

  2. Aron Kutch 2024-10-09

Overall, this vehicle is pretty good. However, it's important to be aware of the stuck-lifter issue that can occur on trucks with the Active Fuel Management system (AFM).

  3. Ernesto Price 2024-10-01

I have found that this Chevy truck lacks the necessary pulling power, even when pulling an empty trailer. It struggles to climb hills without a trailer and only achieves around 14mpg on the road and 11mpg in the city. Additionally, it does not perform well on dirt and there is noticeable slack in the driveline. Despite being brand new, with 26k miles on it, there has been no improvement in mileage or power. In my opinion, a Ford truck would be a better choice for me in the future.

  4. Ramiro Hermann 2024-10-01

I had to replace four oxygen sensors before reaching 45,000 km, with three of them failing after the warranty had expired. The garage informed me that I was using the wrong gas, and that high test gas was required. When the fourth sensor failed, they suggested that I was driving too slowly. However, I have not experienced any issues in the last 15,000 km since all four sensors were replaced, and I have continued to use the same gas and driving habits. I have previously owned two GM trucks that were excellent, but unfortunately, this one has not met my expectations.

  5. Eugene Collins 2024-08-11

I have owned three Chevy trucks in the past. Unfortunately, I have had to replace the transmission in the last two at around 100K miles. With my current 2013 LTZ 1500, I have already had to replace the transmission twice. I have also owned three other GM/Chevy products. As someone in the public safety profession, I need a reliable vehicle, and unfortunately, this Chevy/GM product has not met my expectations. I am considering other options for my next purchase, such as Nissan, Toyota, Ford, or Dodge. I have spoken to associates who have also had to replace their Chevy/GM transmissions and have switched to Ford or Dodge. In fact, I have even considered purchasing a transmission in advance to have it ready in case of failure.

Positive 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 car reviews

  1. Keshaun Halvorson 2024-11-14

I have a 2012 Silverado crew cab, 4x4, LTZ, with 1300 miles on it, and it has been performing exceptionally well. The mixed city and highway MPG is around 16.5, which is impressive. However, I have noticed that the Goodyear Eagle tires that came with the vehicle are not up to par and have caused me to slide several times. It is disappointing that a $50K vehicle would come with such cheap tires. Additionally, the interior gauges are outdated and have not been updated since 2007. Despite these minor issues, I am confident that this truck will continue to be an excellent choice.

Hey there! Just wanted to let you know that we've taken care of a couple of scrapes in the parking lot.

Rest assured that the factory installed remote start option is the only one compatible with the RemoteLink app for smartphones. While the dealer installed option may not work with the app, it is still a reliable and convenient feature. Both GM and OnStar have confirmed that there are no plans to make the dealer installed option compatible in the future. It is important to note that the key fobs for the dealer installed option are programmed at the dealership through a factory download, which may explain the incompatibility. However, the factory installed option is available in a convenient package and is worth the investment. Thank you for choosing Silverado.

I absolutely adore my truck! It's quite big, which can make parking a bit of a challenge, but despite that, I still love it. The front and back are spacious and roomy, and the rear seats even fold up to allow for larger items to be carried in the cab. I added dual exhaust to my truck, which has helped me achieve a fuel economy of around 20 miles per gallon. Everyone who sees it comments on how great it looks! I did have to add running boards to make it easier for me to get into the cab, as I'm only 5 ft. 4 inches tall. Trucks in my area have fantastic resale value, so if I keep it in great shape, I could probably sell it for the same price I paid in a couple of years - which is amazing! The only downside is that my LT model, being a 2013 model, lacks some of the technology features that are standard in today's age, such as Bluetooth and a backup camera. However, despite this, I still absolutely love my truck!

Even though the interior is a little behind, it is still very functional. I'm glad to hear that you love your 4x4 z71! It's great to have a vehicle that rides well, sounds great, and has plenty of power. The ability to fold up the back seats and have a flat floor makes it very useful to put things in the cab or simply have a flat spot for the dog. I hope that your positive experience with the Silverado will make you a believer!
